Wonder no More!

So where have I been?

My sister goes to school in Boston, so my parents and I took a few days off from school/work to visit her. And a super-fun event just *happened* to coincide with our trip…

First of all, kudos to Kati for guessing correctly! Indeed I did have the opportunity to attend the Boston Vegetarian Food Festival :). While Omni-sister and Omni-dad walked to the art museum, I dragged Omni-mom along for some fun. I’m happy to report that the festival was quite well-attended; never have I been in the company of so many others like me!

As my mom and I ventured into the depths of the Reggie Lewis Arena, our jaws hit the floor. But we quickly picked them back up, as they were necessary for the serious eating in which we were about to partake! Clif bar, Moosewood, Larabar, PeanutButter&Co, Wildwood, Trader Joe’s… all of these fine companies and more were in attendance, vying for our attention with an array of enticing goodies.

Some stand-outs:

  • Although my mom is very open to trying vegan foods, she rarely gives them good reviews. However, from the moment the Indigo carrot cake sample made contact with her lips, she could not stop raving about how good it was; she actually admitted that it was even better than HER carrot cake (which she has always said is the best carrot cake in the world—and everyone who eats it agrees). And after she overheard someone complain about a not-so-good Vega Bar, she told him, “You need to go get some of that carrot cake.” The best part? Café Indigo will apparently ship ANYWHERE in the US!
  • Everyone around me was going crazy for the Cherrybrook Kitchen chocolate brownies (another baked good that Omni-mom loved).
  • Besides purchasing a multitude of vegan edibles, I also bought a hat, bumper stickers, and three cookbooks!

(Above, I peruse the cookbooks back at the hotel.)

Conscious Kitchen cupcakes– I bought a blondie, and my mom (below) got some chocolate cookies– both delish :).

This guy was so sweet; he insisted on giving us a free box of Tofettes (yummy flavored tofu bites) on top of our purchase.

Cooking up some May Wah vegetarian meats– I heard at least three people ask aloud, “Are you sure this isn’t meat?”

My lunch– yay for vegan saag! (And zucchini-garbanzo curry)

The Larabar line-up– we were allowed to take two samples each, but I got four (lucky me!) since my mom gave me hers.

To wrap it up, I had a terrific time at the Vegetarian Food Festival, and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of my trip to Boston by touring museums, shopping, and spending quality time with my sister.

ahhh, so fun!! love all the pictures – and I’m envious that you got to try some of Emilie’s (from Conscious Kitchen) baked goods, along with all the other delicious vegan food (and I’m glad that your mom loved it too)!! and those mini Larabars? too cute :0)

Color me jealous! 🙂 We were in Boston about 3 weeks too soon for the VegiFest and I was bummed that our trip didn’t coincide with it. But it is good to hear a firsthand report!

Wow, looks like a wonderful time!! I should do the same thing next year and plan a trip up there to coincide with the veg fest (my hubby’s family lives up there). Freebies are always awesome. I think I still have that student mentality that everything free is good…takes awhile to wear off I think!
You enjoying our cooler weather? My run this evening was actually pleasant instead of sweltering! Yay for fall!

ps: The best thing about the VegFest is the guy from Road’s End Organics is always there making grilled chreese sandwiches– that are so totally delicious I always eat about ten of them!

Sounds like HEAPS of fun. I’m so jealous of all the vegan yummies you can get over there!!

And is that an elefunkle (errrm cough, elephant) pillowslip? I LOVE Elefunkles!!!

Patrick, I didn’t see the Road’s End guy this year– boo :o(

I would’ve loved to have tried a vegan grilled cheese!

The Veggie Fest sounds cool! And I love the part about your mom… my mom is open to veggie foods, but she’s afraid of tofu… I have to sneak it in by making delicious desserts and then keeping quiet that there’s tofu in it. ;-p

He’s there every year! I can’t imagine him missing it. Although it’s been about 3 years since I’ve gone. He’s a tall guy with dreadlocks from Vermont.

The sandwiches are soooo good. I’ve tried copying them but can only come close

What a fun trip! Thanks for letting those of us who couldn’t be there share the experience with your pictures! Those cupcakes… oh, my goodness.

Looks like a great time! All those free samples… It’s a shame you didn’t run into any of the other vegan bloggers while you were there!

Wow what a fun trip. And it’s great that you’re mom enjoyed it too. I am really wanting that carrot cake right now- as it is basically the only kind of cake I like (and I love it).

3 cookbooks! And I know you haven’t bought a cookbook in a long time so they must be good. Which ones did you get?

I’m glad you had such a great time!

Lucky you!! It looks like it was a good festival. Its really awesome that your omin-mom is so open to the vegan stuff even if she doesn’t always give it good reviews :-). The vegan cupcakes look delish! And the vegan saag.. oh my goodness that looks so good!

Great pictures. It looked like a wonderful event. Wish we had more of those here but tend to spend most our time with Animal Rights protests etc.

Oh wow – I can’t believe I was right! That’s so strange that you got to sample the Indigo carrot cake, because I was at the actual cafe over the weekend. Fun!
