Something unfortunate happened that almost ruined my Thanksgiving. I had to stop and reflect and say to myself, “Katie, what is this day REALLY supposed to be about?”
The unfortunate “something” was the burning of a freshly-made apple pie.
I peeled about 5 pounds of apples, cut them, seasoned them with sugar and all sorts of yummy pie spices, and tenderly arranged them on top of a homemade crust. Then I spread another crust on top, fluted the sides, carefully placed the pie in the oven, and danced off to get dressed. Soon the melodic aroma of cinnamon was singing through the house…

But when I returned to the kitchen, the musical note had turned sour. Unknowingly, my sister had turned off the microwave timer when she cooked her lunch. My pièce de résistance, my labor of love, was ruined beyond repair.
I wanted to cry, I wanted to break things, I wanted to scream at my sister and at myself for letting this happen… but honestly, is one burnt pie worth all of that?
Thanksgiving is about so much more than what’s on the dinner table; it’s about the mom and dad who also happen to be my best friends, the sister who shares fashion advice and lets me borrow her shoes, the priveleged life I am blessed enough to lead…
And besides, there was still pumpkin pie!

Katie, I’m still so sorry that this all happened, with the apple pie – but remember, as I told you before, it’s ALL about the pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving anyways; so you’re fine!! yay :0D

Happy thanksgiving to you! I’m really sorry about your pie, it really did look fabulous. But you’re right that there’s so much more to be thankful for.

Don’t you hate that?!?! I made scones one day and one of the kiddies turned the oven up to maximum heat without me knowing. I made great hockey pucks! They weren’t so great as scones though 🙁
Your apple pie looked good though and so does your pumpkin pie and like you said, family is more important in the end. No one will remember what they ate in 5 years, but they’ll remember the family was together.
Amy says
Oh no! I’m sorry about your pie! All that time spent… But there will always be other days to make pie! Christmas, maybe, or New Years! I’m sure it will be fabulous. 🙂

Looks like it’s not all about the pie…but reading this it was hard to think of much else with all of your wonderful photos!

What a bummer! I know it’s probably too late but you may have been able to take off the top crust, put on a a quick oat crisp topping and save it. Anyway, you’re right! Not just Thanksgiving but everyday, we should always remember that people are more important than objects/time spent. Especially when they’re ruined because of an accident.

Oh, I know how you feel. I get angry too at the waste of time, effort, and good food. But you are so right that it’s the company and not the food that matters.
Rural Vegan says
Oh what a shame, poor gorgeous apple pie! This is proof that one should always make two pies, one for back-up!
Christine says
aw, that stinks about your pie. I know how much work peeling and cutting up the apples must have been! this is why my boyfriend is not allowed to touch anything in the kitchen without my permission 🙂 hope you had a happy thanksgiving babe!

your story kinda reminded me of “miracle on 34th street” except it’s thanksgiving instead of christmast and pie instead of santa.
yeah that analogy didn’t work at all. but at least you have a glorious pumpkin pie to be thankful for!
Ashasarala says
Aww, I know how you feel. :*( I completely burnt my awesome tofu roast because I stupidly forgot to cover it with foil.
My roast!
Oh, well. You still did a fantastic job and you’re right- it’s not all about food. It’s about family and feeling blessed.
For what it’s worth, the prepped pie looks amazing! 🙂

awww, i’ve had so many mishaps like that happen to me and I’m sorry that it happened 🙁 the pumpkin pie looks fabulous!

Aw, what a great post. I’m late, I know… but it’s still heart warming to read posts like this cuz it’s just so true. Sorry about your pie, tho. Glad you had a great thanksgiving! 🙂
