Sometimes I discover a food so delicious that I just want to eat it ALL THE TIME! There’s only one problem with this—if I’m not careful, I end up in a food rut, consuming my same favorite foods every day. Not only does this limit the variety (and thus the nutrition) of my diet, it is also very unfair to all the other amazing foods the world has to offer.

In light of this predicament, I’ve come up with a challenge for myself: Each week, I’m going to try a food I don’t normally eat—it can be a food I’ve never tried before, a food I haven’t had in years, or even a food that I’ve written off because I don’t remember liking it. Let the fun begin!

For the first week of my challenge, I chose the kiwi.

Growing up, I’d always believed I hated kiwi, but it recently dawned on me that I don’t even know why I thought this; I couldn’t remember the last time that I’d actually had a kiwi. So I figured I ought to give the little guy another chance.

Boy am I glad I did, as I discovered that my aversion to kiwi has been completely unwarranted; I actually really like it! In fact, after consuming the above specimen, I quickly returned to the store to buy up all his friends!

And now I’d like to extend an invitation to anyone brave enough: Join me in my challenge. You just might find a new favorite food!

    I love your challenge. It’s good to branch out and try new things.

    Aren’t you glad you tried kiwi again? Those furry little things are so good! I could probably eat 10 in a sitting.

    I love this challenge. I personally try to buy something new every week. I go to the produce section and say “OOH! I haven’t tried this before” and can’t wait to try it.

    As a child I was the pickiest eater, ever. No joke. In this past year of being a vegan I have tried almost all my current foods. I never ventured past apples (with the peels off) or bananas, I rarely ate oranges, and refused to eat veggies unless it was pasta sauce.

    Kiwis are AMAZING. I can’t believe I feared them as a child! I’m still afraid to eat the skin though, one day I will try though. =)

    Kiwi is soooo good!!! One of my favorite fruits..well they are pretty much all my favorite, but your challenge is a great idea. I eat a lot of the same foods (as you have probably noticed), but I find it so difficult not to because my family hardly eats anything that I eat, so I have to eat the same thing for a while so things don’t go to waste :( A lot of things we buy in bulk too, so that doesn’t help much either. I’m going to try to do your challenge as best I can! :)

    YUM, Kiwi!! I’ve always loved them. My 4 year old daughter does as well….I can’t buy enough kiwi for her, she’ll eat all I buy in just one sitting. Unfortunately, the organic kiwi around here are quite expensive.

    Great challenge!! I try to mix it up, but definitely get caught in ruts occasionally. Like right now I can get enough apples with almond butter. Everyday!

    I like kiwis… except for their aftertaste, something about it is weird to me. Maybe I should try it more as well!

    Sweet. It’s on. I’ll have to figure out something for this coming week. Maybe mango…I never really liked it. But then again, it’s been years since I’ve had it…or hmmm….maybe radishes. I’ll pick one for next week and one for the other. This going to be fun!

    Kiwis are also very high in Vitamin C content, and have more potassium than bananas! Little nutritioinal powerhouses and generally fairly inexpensive.

    This is a great challenge!

    I am glad you picked kiwi to start with. It’s one of my favourite fruits. My uncle grows them in his glass house. (In Germany!)

    kiwis…mmmhhhh… I eat a kiwi everyday before breakfast. And if I do it, I feel like I have betrayed myself!
    The challenge is a great idea, some things you just have to try! I didn’t like broccoli until I moved out of my mom’s house!

    i used to dislike kiwi as a kid, too (although i’m not even sure if i tried it just once). a year ago i had a kiwi just to discover that i LOVE them, but am allergic. i rarely have them because my throat swells, itches and i can’t stop sneezing. booh, if only i had never tried them then this wouldn’t seem to be so unfair =p

    kiwi… goooood…. I love how you didn’t peel it, I never peel mine. And this is a great idea to keep trying new foods. I get in ruts all the time myself, like I’ll *always* make sandwiches out of the stuff in my fridge. Instead of trying something different! I’m inspired, I’ll be trying to mix things up, too!

    We call kiwi “green delicious” in my house because we’re both hooked!

    Save yourself the time, cut it in half (short ways) and eat it with a spoon!

    That’s a great idea! And kind of what I have been trying to do. Last week was making asparagus and brussels sprouts…and this week I got more asparagus to try it again! (My first time roasting was meh!)

    I haven’t had a Kiwi in forever though! I should try to buy some!

    Such a wonderful challenge!! I can’t blame you for avoiding kiwis at first – they look a little scary with that brown fuzzy skin! They’re the best, though, no? Soooo yummy! Welcome to kiwis! :-)

    I love this challenge! I’m not sure if I could keep it up, but it’s a great idea to try new foods regularly. It’s cool that you discovered you actually like kiwi – I eat it almost every day.

    Kiwi is awesome!
    Just don’t eat too many or you’ll get a tummy ache that pretends to be appendicitis (this happened to me so I speak from experience!)
    I don’t think my parents would mind if you stole me. They would probably pay you for it ^^

    Kiwis are one of my favourite fruits. It’s an interesting challenge and one I can try out straight away as someone gave me some burdock today. I’ve never had it before so I have something new to try thanks to serendipity.

    I’ve done this ever since I moved into my own apartment and found out most foods I didn’t like were only prepared badly. I also try at least one new food a week. it’s fun, but I hadn’t thought about posting it.

    I know this post is years old, but I just wanted to share how it has inspired me to give figs another try. When I was younger and lived in New Mexico, I had several fig trees in my backyard orchard, and I found them just awful! They seriously paled in compared to the plethora of other delectable fruits that surrounded the trees–apricots and pomegranates, especially. What I remember is that figs are flavorless, stringy fruits, with insides reminiscent of worms or maggots. Ew. BUT today I will venture forth and purchase one at the market with an open(ish) mind! Thanks, CCK. …maybe. 😉
