I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream…

For our very first date, Mr. Vitamix 5200 and I decided to go out for ice cream. Except, thanks to Mr. Vitamix, we didn’t have to “go out” at all!

While browsing through the Vitamix cookbook (it comes with the blender), my eye caught a recipe for vitamix soft serve ice cream.  It looked so easy– the only ingredients are milk, sweetener, and ice!  I put mine over a few slices of banana and some chocolate syrup, of course.

.

I thought it tasted good… until Vitamix and I went out for another date and met up with this handsome fellow:

Hello Peanut Butter and Banana Ice Cream!

As an experiment, I blended together some peanut butter, banana slices, and almond milk. Then I poured the soupy mixture into a bowl and froze it overnight. The next day, I re-blended it, and the result was a creamy, delicious, and wholly-healthy homemade ice cream.

(Edit: If you omit the milk and just use frozen banana with Banana Butter, there’s no need to re-blend.)

Sidenote: Mr. Food Processor would like to thank everyone who expressed concerns about his well-being. Rest assured that he is doing fine. In fact, my blogger friend, Cody, informed me that he’s recently struck up a rebound relationship with her toaster. But I am still open to the prospect of a future one-night-stand every now and then with Mr. FP (to chop carrots, make bread crumbs, or for another small job). So he is actually not completely out of my life.

Wow – delicious 🙂 I think I might try this w/ my boring old blender and see if it’s as good as Mr. Vitamix!

Yum! I think I should try making ice cream…my parents have a 15-year-old Vitamix I could use–it’s starting to show its age a little, but I think it still works pretty well. BTW, I don’t know if you’ve ever had this before, but I found an amazing (and simple!) recipe for chocolate (soy)milk shakes from the Joy of Vegan Baking: 1 cup soymilk, 1 frozen banana, 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder. It’s really good and soooo creamy! They also say you can add 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar if you want, but I never do…I like it kind of bittersweet! 🙂 Any recommendations on ice cream making? Is it best to freeze your ingredients first (other than the milk, obviously)?

Holy….. I need one of these things. Well no, I don’t, I’ve spent fair too much money on kitchen gadgets!

What a success!! I used to love getting Reese’s peanut butter cup blizzards at Dairy Queen. Haven’t had one for a while…but now that I know what’s possible with the Vitamix, I guess I don’t need to spend the moola!! YUM!

    Omigosh! That looks so good!

How much milk, sugar and ice did you use?

Do you think this could this been done in a regular blender. I am not familiar with what vitamixes are. Is it just freezing the milk, ice and sugar and then putting it in the blender. Are there other steps that I’m missing?

  7. Kelly T says

thats the healthiest ice cream ever. i have a huge ice cream addiction so i might have to invest in one of those and make some flavors of my own.

ill have to keep it a secret cause my boyfriend would get mad if he knew i was cheating with appliances

  8. Jennifer says

I thought Mr. Vitamix had me with the first ice cream, but peanut butter banana? Watch out Katie, I may have to try to steal Mr. Vitamix’s heart. 😉

Those both look perfect for the hot evening we’re having here! I”m wondering if my poor weak Osterizer will be able to do the same job. . .

Looking forward to your prom nostalgia!

WHERE DID YOU GET THIS THING!!!!!! I think Im going to be buying it in the near future!!!!! Do you think this ice cream would work with a regular blender???? Whats the difference??

  11. vegan addict says

Oh…sigh…you make me laugh! Relationships with kitchen appliances are very essential to our well-being. I used to ummmm…kiss my Kitchen Aid stand mixer when I first got it. But seriously, don’t go telling people that! The strawberry/chocolate almond milk concoction has me wishing those ingredients were in my kitchen.

    i totally drooled just then.
Dammit now I have an insatiable craving for ice cream

So one night stand huh? Don’t you go instigating a little boo-tay just to break ole food processor’s heart now. Be very clean about your intentions

  13. Healthy eating blog says

no way! i was reading some of your earlier posts and found out you live in texas……..well………………….SO DO I! 🙂 how cool is that!? have you ever been to the grocery store sprouts?

  14. Cody says

Yummy… peanut butter and banana sounds awesome.

And, yes. Kitchen appliances make for great relationships. I often pet Mixey the stand mixer and tell him I love him. (He’s just so orange and pretty.)

  15. aTxVegn says

I was going to call you fickle, but it seems you and Vitamix make a good pair. The ice creams look terrific!

    Caitlin—
Wow, I didn’t know they made Vitamixes 15 years ago! Your parents must be trend-setters!

Thanks so much for the shake recipe—it sounds delicious (and simple, like you said). I’m definitely going to try it, and I’ll let you know what I think :o).

As for ice cream making, so far, I’ve only used frozen fruit in my ice creams, and it’s always turned out well. But I would use frozen fruit anyway, because I think it tastes sweeter than non-frozen.

    Anonymous—
I added a link, to the soft-serve recipe, in my post. But I don’t think it’d work with a regular blender; whenever I used to put ice in my smoothies in a regular blender, they didn’t get all creamy, but icy and watery instead.

    Amanda—
Gosh, there are so many good combinations that it’s hard to pick a few! Definitely chocolate-raspberry is good. Hmmm, chocolate-ANYthing is good (well, almost!). Frozen banana seems to make any smoothie taste better. Since I just got my Vitamix, I haven’t experimented all too much with it yet… but stay tuned and I’m sure I’ll be posting lots more interesting combinations that I find. And if YOU have any combination ideas that taste really good, let me know!!!

  17. Katy says

I just bought the vita-mix too, and I can’t wait to try making ice cream. I’m definitely going to try the peanut butter banana combo. Yum!

  18. Bonnie says

Whoa. I looove all the ice cream! I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous of that new boyfriend of yours…

I HAVE to make peanut butter and banana ice cream.

  19. anti says

i was walking home the other day and i thought of a soft serve recipe just like this!!! except i blended organic raw peanut butter, a banana, cocoa powder, agave syrup and almond milk i then froze it and make a chocolate sauce of cocoa powder, agave and coconut oil. When my icecream was frozen i drizzled the chocolate sauce fudgy substance on top and it froze like ice magic. it was pretty much life in raw vegan soft serve icecream form. 🙂 oh and coconut chips may have been sprinkled as well…:)
