Hit on at Whole Foods… and a mushroom-y meal

The two things don’t really have much to do with each other, except that they both happened yesterday.

In the afternoon, while on my weekly trip to Whole Foods, a guy hit on me in the bulk aisle… We ended up having like a 20-minute conversation, and then he asked me for my phone number. Why am I telling you this random story? Because it got me thinking: Maybe I should be looking for guys in health-food stores.  Just Kidding!  But seriously, I’d probably have a good chance of finding someone with similar interests to mine! So everyone, go hit up your local health-food store! 😉

Edit: In later blog entries, I refer to the guy as Whole Foods Boy.

Anyways… on to the food.

Something got into my teachers (perhaps the recent cold spell here in Dallas?) because I had no homework last night! With so much extra time on my hands, I decided to be rebellious and NOT invite my friend, Mr. Microwave, to dinner. Instead, I cooked up a wonderful Fall comfort meal: mushroom stroganoff.

vegan stroganoff

As I’v said many times before, I’m not very good at following a recipe to a T. My creative gene gets the better of me, every time. Last night was no different; I ended up using a combination of two different stroganoff recipes, mixed with some of my own panache. The result:

mushroom stroganoff

I ate the mushroom stroganoff over a serving of whole-wheat pasta, with some steamed bok choy on the side. It tasted just as amazing as it looks.

Have a great day and thanks for this awesome recipe!

OH! By the way, I cooked up some bulghur, so guess what I’ll be trying soon… BLENDED GRAINS! 😀

  5. Veg-a-Nut says

So when is your first date? How cool if he was a vegan and the two of you hit it off? wow! (calm down cupid) Mushroom porn rocks. hehe

  6. Cody says

The last time I got hit on (at work, closing alone) it was borderline sexual harassment. I’ve been trying to get into Whole Foods bakery… maybe the guy-crop there will be classier.

  7. aTxVegn says

Those mushrooms look divine. I don’t get to eat them often enough.

Maybe you should make 2 trips a week to the bulk aisle….

  8. Joanna says

i met a guy a few weeks ago in the check out line. he asked for my number but he never called. what an ass! haha

  9. eatingbender says

Hehehe – you go girl!! Get that man at the health food store, fo sho ;o) That’s a great place to look, indeed!

I love the mushroom stroganoff! Can you believe that when my mom used to make me stroganoff as a kid, she had to make a special sauce that didn’t have mushrooms in it for me?! The HORROR!! Luckily, I’m more grown up now!

  10. Melissa says

That looks so good! I can’t wait to see the recipe…we have a bag of mushrooms just waiting for something like this to come along.:)

  11. CeciLiA says

LOL! Why am I not surprise?!? You’re such a hottie (a smart one at that!) 😀 Sooooo …. did you give him your number *winky wink* I sense a new relationship here!!! Oooolala!!!

  12. Ricki says

Whole Foods–what a great place to meet a like-minded guy! And I do hope you let us know how it turned out. . . !

The stroganoff looks great–I would probably want to eat it over pasta, too. 🙂

  13. lighterportions says

So the health food store is where I need to go to find a decent guy? I’m on it!
That’s hilarious that you guys ended up talking for 20 minutes. Think he’s a keeper? 😉

And boy does that mushroom stroganoff ever look good. I love me some mushrooms.

  14. HangryPants says

haha – fantastic! A guy shopping in the supermarket is probably single, so great place to look.

    Noodles look delish!

  15. Eric says

Haha I’ve actually thought of that as well…..a health food store probably would be a good place to meet people.

I have to hand it to the guy…its not easy to hit on someone at the grocery store. Whenever the thought pops into my head, I am reminded of the scene from My Blue Heaven when Steve Martin walks up to lady and goes “You shouldn’t be in the frozen section, cuz you’re gonna melt all this good stuff!”

  16. Mihl says

If I was a guy I would have asked for your number, too. (No, I wouldn’t, I am too shy for these things).
    Oh and I love mushrooms!

  17. Catherine says

Ahh I hope you gave your number!! Hmm meeting men while buying produce… that would’ve saved me all these years of getting my boyfriend to drop the hot dog and remote and embrace all things health! hah

  18. Lauren says

i wish i liked mushrooms..theres always such awesome looking dishes with it, but i really just can’t stand them! haha
oh and way to go for the boy in whole foods..thats the best way to find a good guy! haha

  19. Patrick says

PS: How do you get so many hotties commenting on your blog? When I had one all I got were comments from people trying to get on MTVs Pimp My Ride?!?!

  20. Bianca says

Oh, those mushrooms are turning me on! Just kidding…

So did you give the guy your number? Was he hot? You have a good point about picking up dudes in health food stores. I always pick them up at bars and later learn they have criminal records or shady pasts….ha! Guess I’m looking in the wrong places. If I’d have been looking at Whole Foods, maybe my current man would be vegan instead of a crazy steak lover.

  21. Agnesss =) says

    Hey Katie…

Hahh…!! I have some similar experiences with MEETING GUYS IN THE HEALTH FOOD SHOPS…hah =P REALLY AMAZZZING =)) good luck =D

OHHHH MUSHROOMS!!!!!!!!! You CAN’t GO WRONG WITH THEM!!!!!

    Looks DIVINE!!!! =D

If you have time…pls visit my new post…=)))

    Enjoy the day!!!!!!

  22. shelby says

I want to work at a health food store! I think that would be a good place to pick up guys because then I know they don’t eat crap all the time 😉

    mmm, mushrooms!

  23. Lauren says

Hi, I would like to send you a private emai, but I can’t locate your email address. On your full profile it lists email, but I don’t have outlook so it won’t let me see it. I would love your advice on my question since I think you will relate. Thanks so much!

  24. Kimberly says

Didn’t you hear? When it comes to pick-up scenes, Whole Foods is the new Starbucks! 😉 And hey, if he’s buying organic, chances are he knows how to cook AND recycle.

  25. brooke says

katie, i can relate! wf and co-ops are perfect for boy searching. it actually happened to me last week at trader joe’s…on a friday night. i wish i would have said something because im sure we would have had a lot in common, but i was kind of creeped out! anyway, i always look in their cart. you can tell a lot about a person by what they eat!

and your mushroom stroganoff looks delicious, good thing you did not have any homework!

  26. Michael says

<3 oh wow lol. I walk around whole foods in dallas all the time trying to find other vegans :). I thought I was the only vegan in dallas I found your blog and another from dallas tonight I plan to start reading them all the time.

    ~ Mike

  27. ChocolateCoveredVegan says

    Patrick–
I think I probably get so many comments because I comment on a lot of other blogs. If ya don’t ever comment on anyone else’s blog, no one knows yours exists ;o).

I usually go to the little Whole Foods on Greenville. What about you?

    Lauren–
Hmm, sorry it’s not showing up! Haha my neighbor is getting married soon, and she met her husband in Starbucks!

  28. ChocolateCoveredVegan says

    Michael–

Wow, another vegan in Dallas! Haha I used to think I was the only one, too. But then I thought, “I can’t be the only one, because they sell so many vegan products. Someone else MUST be buying them!”

Thanks so much for leaving a comment; it’s so exciting to find other vegans around here!!!

  29. Patrick says

    Hey Katie–

I usually go to that same one. But I never see anyone as hot as you there! I must go at the wrong time.

I’ve been shopping at Urban Market lately.. tomorrow I am moving right next to it!

  30. Emma the Eco-Princess! says

Mmm… Mushrooms… I think they could quite easily be my favourite veggie! This looks delicious, can’t wait for the recipe! ^_^

  31. newcitygirl says

hahaha, that’s so funny! Randoms striking up a convo with you…sounds like something that would happen to me! Was he cute? haha

  32. Dori says

    Hi Katie,

I recently changed from mostly raw to a more macro-ish approach. I love your recipes: so simple, so little processed food. Did you ever publish the recipe for the stroganoff? I can’t find it. Help!

    Thanks,
    Dori

  33. Becky @ my life be like says

Haha i have a whole foods boy! Funny to read your story. I met mine while checking out. I had seen him in one of the isles and I literally thought, that guy is too beautiful for me and I hope he doesn’t see me (b/c I had just been running).

Anyway, I was buying a watermelon and he said, “So, you like watermelon? Yeah, I’m more of a cantaloup man myself.” I laughed and then he said, “So, how do you think they get all those seeds out of the seedless watermelons?!”

He was beautiful and charming and I totally blew it because I am socially challenged. 🙂 I still keep my eyes peeled for him when I go, and it’s been months!
