So said that ever-sagacious Mark Twain.
What do chocolate-chip cookies, Coca Cola, Penicillin, and Velcro have in common?
Turns out that all of these inventions were discovered by accident.
And now I can add one more invention to the list: Crepe Cakes. Definition: something between a pancake and a crepe.
One day, as I was making pancakes, my little chocolate-covered fingers slipped, causing me to add extra water to the whole-wheat-pastry flour batter. But it has oft been said that accidents are the #1 source of inventions. And I am definitely enjoying this particular little accident.
Crepe-Cakes, Apple Pie Pudding, and lotsa cinnamon. Perfect breakfast.
Crepe-Cakes and… roasted asparagus? Hey, why not?
Smile! How could you not, with such scrumptious victuals? (Crepe-cakes and apple pie pudding again)
Crepe-Cakes, roasted butternut squash (best stuff ever!), and Whole Foods unsweetened ricemilk (I was turned off of ricemilk years ago, after trying a sickly-sweet version. But this stuff is so refreshing, with just a slight hint of sweetness. You’ll be seeing more of it in future posts for sure!)
1. EDIT: the Crepe Cake recipe is now up; it can be found here: Click me

Is that it? ww pastry flour and water? CCV… NO CHOCOLATE CHIPS!??!!!?
-PS- I adore the 365 unsweetened rice milk… And it’s calorie count and fiber is Amazing! Only 45 kcals and 6 grams of fiber =]
yummy – i looooooove crepes
Congrats on the award!
And I totally understand how busy you are! Don’t professors understand how important blog reading and commenting is??? No? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
Those look yummy!!
What a great idea!!! And you could prolly do that with any pancake recipe. Which one did you use?
My mom used to buy rice milk and I hated it!!! Maybe I will try that brand and see how I like it.
Love your crepe cakes! Congrats on your awards!
Mmm crepe-cakes sound really good. Two of my favorites!

I love crepes. More than pancakes actually. I especially love them with just lemon juice and sugar – very French, very delicious!
These sound AWESOME!! I’m a big fan of crepes
)
I make crepe-cakes too! I never knew what to call them but that is perfect. I always just thought of them as skinny floppy pancakes
ooh super awesome! crepe cakes!

funfunINOWWANNASTEALTHATIDEAfun!
Geez, I was perfectly content with my dinner (stir fried noodles, mind you!) until I see your crepe cakes … boo!
Oh yea, I second what Julz said, NO CHOCOLATE CHIPS …. sorry my friend, you just LOST your title, hehe!!
Did you know that Ginger ale, chocolate chip cookies and tarte tartin were also mistakes? Hey, my husband was also a mistake, oops, I mean, surprise! Hey, lots of good things are surprises!
those are too cute! i have added extra water to pancake batter by mistake but i always tried to correct it instead of rolling with it. good job!
Those crepe cakes sound good!
Can’t wait for theme week to start!
I’m impressed. Those are hard to make!
i love crepes! i have never attempted to make them myself, i always let my mother
and your roasted butternut squash!!! recipe!? i also cannot wait for your banana brulee oatmeal!
Yum to the Crepe Cakes!! Ugh, I’ve had the same exerience with overly sweet vanilla rice milk (and almond milk)… now I stick to the brands I know.
So glad that you are going to post that Mushroom Stroganoff recipe soon…I was going to remind you!
i like to call mistakes ‘happy accidents’. btw, i gave you a butterfly award. see my blog for details. i haven’t had a crepe in years.
should i even ask how many days in a row you ate crepe cakes?? haha they look delicious!! whenever i find something that i love to eat, i eat it like crazy, too.
i’d still call it alfredo, too!! it looks just like it anyways.
have you decided what you’re makin for thanksgiving yet??? hopefully, tons of cupcakes with little turkeys and pilgrims on them!! haha
Congrats on the awards! I love the crepe-cakes and your spider plate!
add Post-It to the accident list!
Oh man, I adore that spiderweb plate! The crepe cakes are delicious-looking too.
Those crepe cakes look fantastic!
Congrats on all your awards! Are those chocolate crepe-cakes? Or is it just the whole-wheat flour giving them a dark, rich look? Either way, they sound lovely!
Crepe cakes are better than pancakes because you can eat lots more of them!
Good food and good news, indeed
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Your pancakes look delicious..we take thin pancakes and smother them with cinnamon or peach applesauce and roll them up (supposedly this is a german way of eating pancakes my german hubby tells me)..thought you might like the idea!
Neat! I can’t ever get crepes to work in my stupid pans. But maybe crepe cakes would work for me since they seem a tad bit thicker.
Katie, I’ve nominated you for an award – check out my blog for details!
Recipe please!
congrats girl!
Andrea—
I found the smiley bowls at the dollar store!
I love the way they look! They must be delicious! And I love crepes, but I haven’t vegan crepes since returning to the vegan lifestyle. I must try them soon!
you have the coolest plates and smiley bowl.
those crepecakes look awesome. makes me hungry just looking at them.
I Love your smiley bowl. I collect happy faces cuz they make me smile!

My favorite homemade breakfast is your Cookie Dough Oatmeal recipe. It is absolutely fantastic!
favorite homemade breakfast….some crazy oatmeal concoction
my favorite breakfast is definitely oatbran with berries, maple syrup, and naturally nutty vanilla almond butter!
My favorite breakfast is pumpkin waffles! I just use oatmeal, pumpkin and egg whites, plus some wonderful spices. And always topped with PB!
fav breakfast? pancakes or oatmeal
sooo filling!
My favorite breakfast is always a steaming bowl of oats with flax seeds on top and a banana on the side. Even in hot weather, it’s absolutely my go-to breakfast food.
My favorite breakfast is waffles w/ barney butter & fruit spread on top. YUM!!
My favorite breakfast – when I have the extra time to make them – is vegan pancakes – of any kind!
I’m embarassed. I have two favorite breakfasts, neither of which I eat anymore.
1. Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch
2. Sausage (gasp) and cheese omlette with hash browns from Bob Evans…with a side of biscuits with honey on them.
For real favorite breakfast, I eat banana pancakes and I’m happy as a clam!
I’m lame. All I ever eat for breakfast is peanut butter toast, milk and some fruit. I also like frittattas once in a while- usually with sauteed bellpepper, onion, zucchini, and whatever other vegetables I have lying around, plus some leftover meat and cheese. Yummy.
I am not the biggest breakfast fan. I know, lame. I also end up eating my oatmeal/granola as an afternoon snack! But if I do eat breakfast it’s typically super light, like fruit or a small bowl of cereal…
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I can’t wait to eat breakfast every morning. I usually eat oatmeal made with soy or rice milk. I always add cinnamon, some kind of fruit (fresh or dried), and top it off with a spoonful of nut butter. I usually eat a banana on the side. Mmm.
My favey fave breakfast would have to be my soy yogurt parfait with crunchy oat granola bar crumbles, raspberries, vanilla brown rice protein powder, and flaxseeeeed
Although it’s all protein rich and such, it leaves me WANTIN MORE! Not in the unsatisfied, pit in my stomach feeling. But like Hot damn that was some good ass parfait
My favorite breakfast is gluten free oatmeal with cinnamon and fresh blackberries! or Greek yogurt with fresh blackberries! or Rice Chex!
My favorite breakfast is a tie between:
-a slice of my personal recipe buckwheat bread with home-made cashew cream “cheese” and a wedge of crunchy green pepper.
and
-a slice of millet bread with chocolate soynut butter!
Oooooh, now I’m hungry!
My favorite breakfast would have to be either cereal( I swear, with all the different varienties, I will never get bored of it.) and smoothies. Nummy.
My fave breakfast is blended banana/date icecream with a big teaspoon of spirulina and a sprinkling of kapai puku!! Mmmmm
oh gosh, it’s so hard to choose a favorite breakfast. the one i’m enjoying right now is pretty good: banana microwaved for a minute, TJ’s Fiber Os, soymilk. A little sweet and delicious!
Favorite breakfast…
I hate to be boring but along with half of the blog world I’d have to say oatmeal. I’m not big on the toppings but the best I ever had was with home-made blueberry/cinnamon sauce on top. Now you’ve made me hungry;)
Favorite breakfast?
Granola!! and raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries to top it off.
is this where we comment again for the granola giveaway?
oops didn’t do my fav breakfast- EGGS
my favorite breakfast is vegan banana bread/muffin
My favorite breakfast is definitely a nice bowl of steel cut oats with blueberries and pecans, doused in plain soymilk… but only after a really long, cold, hard row on the Hudson… otherwise the oats just don’t taste the same!
my favorite breakfast is ezekial bread w/ peanut butter and bananas.
My favorite breakfast is a green monster smoothie!!
Haha found it!! Oatmeal with vanilla soymilk and Trader Joe’s peanut butter!!
My fave breakfast: a sprouted grain bagel with overripe pear slices and sunflower seed butter. Yum
breakfast is seriously the best meal of the day, so delish!
my favorite is oats + almond milk + riiipe banana + barney butter. mmmmm.
