Product Review Week: Split Pea Baby, One More Time

December 2, 2008
by Chocolate-Covered Katie

My apologies for the Britney-inspired title… I couldn’t help it!

But this post isn’t about Britney; it’s about Amy. Who’s Amy, you ask? “Amy” refers to Amy’s Kitchen, that mastermind company behind so many yummy foods (Bistro Burgers, to name just one!). My main reason for loving Amy’s is that, as a college student, I don’t always have time to whip up gourmet meals. Sure, homemade soup tastes better than soup from a can. But hey, no one’s offering to make me homemade soup!
As you’ll see in the upcoming theme week, Soup Week, I often like to make my own delicious soups. However, when time doesn’t permit for this, I turn to Amy. Canned or not, her split pea soup is pretty darn tasty.

Although the plethora of soup photos in this post may suggest otherwise, I actually don’t eat canned soup very often (as I said earlier, I prefer homemade). The following pics were compiled over the past eight months or so.
.

Split pea soup, Nectar bar, and a ginormous salad (I watched Elf on Saturday, and he totally used that word!  That will Ferrell is one smart guy.  Ya gotta love his food philosophy: We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup!)

.
.
.
I brought a can with me on my cruise (see; I told you some of these pictures were old!), and the kind staff heated it up for me. Here she be, with an Ezekial pita for dipping (also from home), black coffee, and some delish summer blueberries
.
.

Vegan-buttered toast, applesauce, yummy cashews, and the soup

.

Chard and mixed-green salad (with the usual peach salsa), Lightlife Tex Mex chili, 1 slice vegan-buttered toast, and more soup
.
.

Simple meal– toast, frozen cherries, and a bowl of piping-hot soup

.

Homemade bread, another salad (with kale, escarole, and mixed greens), more soup

I adore that soup as well but ever since I made my own split pea at home I never buy it! It does take a while to make the soup but that’s why I make a huge batch and freeze it. Split pea is especially good for breakfast =)

i’ve never had split pea soup before. i might have to give the canned version a try to decide if i really like it before I slave away making a homemade version.

Amy’s has the best canned soups! Actually, Amy’s Kitchen has so many good products! I haven’t had one that I didn’t enjoy!

I haven’t tried the Split Pea soup yet (I actually haven’t had Split Pea soup in any way!)- I’ll have to put that on my grocery list!

    Thanks for the review!

I like Diet, Dessert and Dogs too!

I agree, that soup is yummy! I still think it’s cool how nice the staff was on your cruise. The idea of canned soup isn’t appealing to me unless it is Amy’s. I feel like I’m getting something healthy, even though it is canned! I like her chili a lot too!

Thanks so much, Katie! I can’t say I’ve ever had my name in the same vicinity as “Dickens, Shakespeare, Hardy, Austen” before (except maybe on the cover of an underdrad essay I wrote??). I am definitely blushing a bit from all the love. . . :)

I know it’s hard to believe, but I have NEVER TASTED ANYTHING BY AMY!! Oh, I see the stuff in the stores, but so far have never bought any. Now I see that must change! (And I’d make homemade soup for you any time, Ms. CCV! Come on over!)

wow! i sure had some catching up to do on your blog…everything looks great, and way to go for your momma abstaining from our turkey friend. any effort made by an omni is awesome because that means they are thinking more about connections to food. i’ve never had any of amy’s soups. i’ll have to look for them to go on sale.

I looove Amy’s soups!! I like to make my own as well, but as you said it is perfect in a pinch.

To answer a questions you asked on my blog a little while back – I haven’t done much baking with Stevia yet, but you will start to see some experiments with it this month. I have recently gotten into the NuNaturals brand of Stevia and really prefer it over other brands because it doesn’t have the funny aftertaste that Stevia sometimes has. Also, NuNaturals makes a fiber added Stevia which is perfect for baking because regular Stevia is so much finer than reguar white sugar. I’ll definitely let you know how it goes because amounts will definitely have to be adjusted for sweetness!

I think everyone has soup on the brain these days. Yummy post! I just love Amy’s. I also found the Wolfgang Puck Tortilla Soup to be a wonderful vegan treat! I missed tortilla soup for so long due to it ALWAYS having chicken and/or cheese!

I live Amy’s soups but have never tried the Split Pea soup because I’ve loathed pea ever since I was a little kid. But you know what? I’m gonna pick it up next time I get over the store and get over my dislike of peas! A little green vegetable must be harmless, right?

For some reason I have never seen that soup from Amy in the store. Probably because I hone in on 2 or 3 places and ignore the rest. I’ll have to keep an eye out for it.
