The Butternut Tales, Part Three: Build Me Up, Butternut Baby

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on January 28, 2009

I need you, I need you, more than anyone, darling, know that I have from the start…

You’ll be happy to know that the Butternuts made it back from their vacation safely (although they were reluctant to return to Dreary Dallas, where the forecast is for an ice storm. Yes, you read that right). They’re already planning another getaway– possibly to Hawaii. Bring on the sunscreen!

.

.

Chocolate-Covered (Butternutty) Meals of the Day
(No, I didn’t really eat all these meals in the same day! The pictures are over the course of a few months.)

Oh, and to answer the question as to where I got my fry-cutter: We bought it at Linens-n-Things many years ago ($12.99), so my best bet would be to look at a store like Bed, Bath, Beyond. Otherwise, I’m sure you can buy one online. (Is there anything you can’t get on Amazon these days?)

Sweet cinnamon-y fries, baked tofu, savory oatmeal, and a ginormous chard-and-romaine salad with peach salsa
Yummy snack: cinnamon butternut fries alongside one of my favorite new “hot” cereals

I put “hot” in parenthesis because it’s not really a hot cereal at all. I throw maybe a little more than 1/2 cup Post Shredded Wheat’N Bran cereal into a bowl, cover with maybe 3/4cup of water or non-dairy milk (sorry, I don’t measure so I can’t be more specific!) and a little salt, and microwave for about 2 minutes. It magically turns into hot cereal! How cool is that?!

Butternut fries, kale chips, a ripe banana, baked tofu, and creamy hulled-barley pilaf

Another CCV-approved snack: Butternut fries and Reeses peanut butter cup filling. Oops, wait, that’s just a jar of Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter. (I ate them separately. But now I wonder how squash fries would taste with peanut butter. Probably pretty yummy…)

Nutty butternuts, mucho más kale chips, tender seitan (marinated in soy sauce), a juicy blood orange, and– if I remember correctly– that’s savory oatmeal in the green bowl

Same participants as above, except the orange did a nifty little trick of morphing into a Gala apple

I feel a Product-Review post in the near future…

I have actually never tried dipping them in any kind of PB. I don’t know why I never thought of that?!? I’m sure it’s awesome- pretty much anything is awesome with PB tho, right? Yum yum yum :) I make “hot” cereal with random things too.

Yum, I would love to eat all of those meals in one day! Or maybe not, that would probably make me a bit too full! I love warmed cereal so I love your idea for warmed shredded wheat n’bran.

I don’t know if the first line of your post was to mimic this song…but it really reminded me of “Build Me Up” by The Foundations

“Why do you build me up (build me up) Buttercup, baby
Just to let me down (let me down) and mess me around
And then worst of all (worst of all) you never call, baby
When you say you will (say you will) but I love you still
I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin’
You know that I have from the start…..”

You know what’s funny? I definitely dipped a butternut squash fry in pb today. And it was definitely not bad at all. I think it would most likely be drop dead delicious with dark chocolate dreams. Do it up. Lets hear the verdict.

Hip hip hooray for butternut squash! Thanks for the awesomely cinnamony goodness.

i think i know why you are so skinny. you never cook anything with oil. not even a little bit. everything is pam and spices. veggies are GREAT but very low in calories. maybe if sauteed with a little oil it would help. not trying to be attacking at ALL. just an observation. you still are SO very amazing, and the nicest person alive. have an awsome day!

Anonymous– Thank you for the second part of your comment. As for the first part, I am wondering how you seem to “know” that I NEVER do something when you are not with me 24/7, and therefore have no idea what I do or don’t do. Please know that I am perfectly healthy despite my small size and that I definitely consume a healthy amount of fat in my diet.

I loved your title. I love the real song, I used to sing it to kids I babysat to get them to stop crying. Weird fact :)

All the meals look fab, well not so sure about the butternut and PB&C dark chocolate dreams (even if you did eat them apart) and I love dark chocolate dreams, I just keep it far from my veggies!

I have butternut fries on my list of what to make in the next couple weeks. I feel like I haven’t eaten enough winter squash this winter…and that makes me sad.
