Friends don't let friends hate oatmeal

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on March 9, 2009

There I was, extolling the amazingness that is oatmeal, when my friend interrupted me with this bombshell: ”I don’t like oatmeal.”

First thought to run through my head: “I can’t be friends with you anymore.”

Kidding, people! But I did decide that dear friend’s mind needed changing.  And thus the challenge began.

-Me: Well what kinds of things do you like?  In other words, what is your absolute favorite food?

.

-Friend: Hmmm, probably pizza.

.

Uh-oh; this was going to be tougher than I thought.oatmeal

 Let’s backtrack, shall we?

-Me: What is your absolute favorite dessert food?

-Friend: Warm chocolate chip cookies, straight from the oven.

Now, that I can work with.  *Heads to the secret Oatmeal Lair*   In my next post, I shall reveal the results ;) .

Chocolate-Covered Song of the Day

A Little Less Conversation

(Elvis)

Elvis is a great running buddy, not just because I like his music.  He’s also great to run with because whenever I hear his songs, I think of my favorite sandwich.

sand

How could running not be enjoyable when you have peanut butter and banana on the brain?!

Thanks to Elvis, I knew exactly what I wanted to eat today (for second breakfast) when I got home from running. (No, it didn’t involve bacon; sorry Elvis, but bacon has no business being with peanut butter and banana!) I rushed in the door and rustled up a breakfast fit for a king (or The King)– Peanut Butter and Banana Oatmeal Fusion.

What do you all like to think about when you exercise? Here’s what I usually think about (when I’m not dreaming about peanut butter and banana sandwiches, that is).

I can’t wait to see your next oatmeal combination!!! Hopefully you got your friend to like it =)

I dunno, pizza oats doesn’t necessarily sound all that bad. Ya know, as a savory concoction. Hmmm. Now I want pizza.

And my brain goes on random tangents about everything and anything while I’m exercising most times, other times I just completely zone out and use it as a time to not think about anything.

Erin March 9, 2009 at 11:01 pm

I’m not sure if there is a more heavenly combination than peanut butter and banana. It’s the best.
I cannot wait to see this oatmeal concoction! I bet it is amazing!!

Lately I just zone out…random thoughts twitter about but lately I don’t get too caught up in anything.

I would have the exact same reaction regarding your friend not liking oatmeal! I talk about my oats so much [how I love them], and how everyone should love them. I now have my sister eating oats (former hater). Let’s reform the world, Katie! :-)

Katie,
Way to introduce your friend to the wonderful world of oats. He/she obviously has never tasted one of your amazing creations. I bet someone’s mind was changed…can’t wait to hear about it. :)

Hahaha! Sure a cute title of this post! I love spreading the oatmeal love. :)

I usually think about whatever song I’m listening to or how long I’ve been running.

That picture scared me there for a second. I run in the morning, and this may sound shallow, but I think about what I’m going to wear for that day.

Whoa who hates oats? (almost as bad as asking “who hates PB?” ) lol!!! :D

That pizza oatmeal looks soooo silly…I just wanted to say I think your blog is such a great blend of humor and uniqueness and food! And maybe your friend just had some bad instant oatmeal and gave up on the stuff. I hope there is a recipe tomorrow because oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are my most favorite! -Lisa D.

I don’t like oatmeal either – please don’t hate me! :)

If you can convert your friend, then maybe you can convert me! You almost turned me into a silken tofu lover, but then I went into my soy-free thing.

I LOVE that song! And Elvis!

I think that’s a perfect strategy. Cookie inspiration led me to my molasses cookie oatmeal, which I’m now hooked on! Chocolate chip… I can’t wait to see what you came up with!!

Sometimes I think about how amazed I am to be able to exercise with the best of them, and I remember to be grateful for my weight loss. Other times I think about what I am going to eat after my workout. Hee hee! Those are my “high intensity workout thoughts.”

I think I’ve figured out some of my hardest life issues while walking. It’s lower intensity as far as exercise goes, but higher intensity for my sanity! I try to sneak in a couple of little walks a week on the days I rest from my usual workouts.

CCV, I think this is the best title for a post that you have ever come up with! And I’m with you — any person who doesn’t like oatmeal is just silly! Or maybe they’ve only had instant oats. But I think if you bring your pal over for breakfast and made him/her a fab bowl of oats, their mind would be changed! I can’t wait for the chocolate chip cookie inspired oaties!

When I exercise, I usually think about boys. Or food. Probably what my post-workout snack is going to be. Sometimes I like to pray while I’m exercising, too. But I keep my eyes open!

What about when oatmeal hates you? :( I adore oatmeal. I like it plain, with brown sugar (no cinnamon). I just wish it let me eat it without making me ill!

Not so sure on pizza flavoured oatmeal :P

Can’t wait to see what you came up with!

Mmm chocolate chip oatmeal? Sounds fab! I should return to the more traditional cookies for oats inspiration–I got sidetracked with my Girl Scout obsession!

Yum! Peanut butter and bananas are so good in oatmeal. And it is a great way to get your protein, fruit and grains in one bowl.

You’ve got to convert your friend – there’s no reason not to like oatmeal. It’s just so, so versatile you can eat it pretty much whatever way you like. I bet you could make a pizza-style oatmeal and have it as a dip! It’s just THAT versatile.

Wait, are you talking about oatmeal as cooked porridge, or oatmeal as rolled oats? Because I can’t imagine how your friend wouldn’t like oatmeal raisin cookies.

Anyway, if getting your friend to eat oat bran is the goal…TA-DAAAAA!! Oat Bran Pizza!

Andrea—Oatmeal fattening?! Haha that’s gotta be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! Maybe if you saturate it in heavy cream and lard…
Maybe she is trying to sabotage your diet; have you ever seen the movie, Mean Girls?

Lisa—Thanks so so much for your sweet comment! *Big smiles*

I have an oatmeal pizza crust recipe simple and easy

For thin crust:
1/2 cup oatmeal, uncooked and ground in a blender
2 tsp. Your favorite seasoning (italian)
3 tsp. Garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp. Baking soda
2-3 tsp. Water
1. mix dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl.
2. Add the water a teaspoon at a time until your mixture forms a ball.
3. After your ball is formed, us a little extra oat flour to roll out your crust. Your crust should spread out 6-8 inches on diameter
thick crust:
1 egg white
1/4 cup ground oats (ground into flour)
1/2 tsp. Garlic powder
1/2 tsp. Basil
1/2 tsp. Oregano
Fresh ground pepper

1. Whisk egg white until foamy
2. Add ground oats and some water and mix to a smooth consistency.
3. Mix in spices
4. Heat a non stick skillet. Spread batter in a circular motion to create a 6″ circle of batter
5. Allow the crust to cook before turning, about 1 minute.
6. Cook for 45 seconds more until crust is lightly toasted.

Then grab some pizza sauce for no more than a dollar a jar. And your favorite vegan toppings and put in oven until cheese is lightly brown
