Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Oatmeal

Where were we?

Let’s continue with yesterday’s Crazy Oatmeal Story.
.
Ah yes, in the Secret Oatmeal Lair… Sure, it would have been easy to just crumble up chocolate-chip cookies into oatmeal and call it a day.  But:

  1. I was up for more of a challenge.
  2. I wanted the oatmeal to be a little more nutritious than that.
  3. I didn’t have any chocolate-chip cookies on hand (sad, I know).

And so, after toiling many hours in the oatmeal chamber, I concocted this gorgeous creation:

z-232

Cookie Dough Oatmeal

(Serves 1 lucky person)

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (40 grams) or another hot cereal (such as kamut flakes)
  • ½ cup milk of choice, plus more if you want to cook your oats in it. (120g)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Chocolate chips
  • sweetener to taste—If I were making the recipe for myself, I probably would’ve either eaten it sans sugar or used the Melted Banana Trick.  But my friend doesn’t like bananas (Seriously, why am I friends with this girl?!), so I used brown sugar for her.
  • Walnuts
  • More dry oats (You’ll see why)

Cook 1 serving oats with the salt, and water or milk of choice, or a combination of both. (I use this cooking method: How to make Voluminous Oatmeal.) You can cook the oats ahead of time and fridge them until you’re ready to proceed with the recipe. Throw some chocolate chips into the oats and microwave until the chips are melty. Put the oats into a blender (I used the Magic Bullet short cup) with ½ cup of milk, the sugar, and the vanilla extract. If you want your oatmeal to be a bit chewy, blend for a very short time.  Blend longer for a more pudding-like consistency. Transfer the oatmeal to a bowl and mix in more chocolate chips, raw oats, and—if you’re so inclined—chopped walnuts.

Mmmm, what a great recipe. I’ll be sure to try it soon! By the way, the pizza oats still sound slightly strange to me but I guess toaster-oven pizza on oatmeal bread would be good. And I know that pizza rice is good because I loooove rice and tomato sauce. I’m sure if anyone can make it good you can!-Lisa D.

  2. Jane says

wow. if i was your friend and lived close to you, i would totally lie and say i didn’t like some type of food (like any grain haha) so that you would make an amazing concoction like this for me.
bwahaha evil plan, huh? it would be worth it!

  3. Gina says

I used to eat a lot of savory oatmeal…its yummy! I keep meaning to have it again, I haven’t had it since I was vegetarian and put cheese in it!

  4. ruby red vegan says

Yes!!! Thanks for being so quick to post your much-awaited creation! It sounds wonderful… And I never buy choc chips anymore, but on a whim today I got a handful of carob chips from the bulk section. I’m so glad I did because now I can try your oatmeal! And I’m going to do it tomorrow!

  5. Ricki says

You are too much! Shall we call you the Blended Cereal Queen? Or maybe Chocolate Covered Blended Cereal?? I had blended rice (no sugar though, on this diet–sniff, boo hoo) in your honor this morning!

  6. Molly says

I think you can make just about anything with oats… savory, sweet, etc. – they’re just so versatile! We should have a challenge – who can make something out of oatmeal that no one would ever have thought could have been made out of oatmeal. 🙂 Haha, a little wordy, hope you can understand!

  7. Vegetation says

OH MY YUM! Katie, you’ve outdone yourself (and that’s pretty hard to do!). I think I’m definitely going to have to give this one a try (with an oat substitution 🙁 but still…. :D)

  8. Caroline says

    Sounds pretty awesome, my dear!

BTW, I’ve been meaning to ask–what difference does blending your grains make? I’ve been interested in trying it for a while, but I was just curious as to what texture I am supposed to be aiming for.

  9. Marianne says

Obviously, that would be awesome. Even without the banana, because sometimes, a girl just doesn’t want to deal with the banana flavour (or is that just me?).

And perhaps if I get the urge, I’ll test out some pizza oats. But what pizza toppings to choose?!

  10. Erin says

Good job on converting another! These oats are spectacular sounding. Definitely must try! The addition of the raw oats sounds tasty and cookie dough like!
I have a friend who I was trying to explain the deliciousness of oats too and found she doesn’t like cooked bananas or pumpkin! I was appalled.

  11. Shelby says

I’m so glad she liked it!! Woo! I bet you could convert anyone with your recipes though. They are seriously the best =)

  12. Jodye says

Katie, you are a genius! I’d definitely go your route and use the mashed banana trick, too. I recently came across a recipe for banana filled chocolate chip cookies, and this looks like a great, easy, alternative!

  13. Elle says

breakfast tomorrow morning! if i can drag my lazy bum out of bed before noon, that is – reading period pre-finals, it kills me! : )
    xoxo

  14. Sarah says

I LOVE chocolate chip cookie dough. LOVE IT. I may have to make this for brekkie in the morning.

I’ve contemplated a savory blended grain dish. Cheese grits are big down South, so maybe something along those lines. I’m thinking, I’m thinking…

  15. jen molica says

    hey katie,
those oats look great. confession time: i’m not an oatmeal hater per se–i just don’t eat it unless i’m really sick. i think of it as food i eat when i’m not feeling well. since i’m relatively healthy most of the time, i hardly eat it. what a shame.

anyway, pizza oats sound kind of gross BUT you could make a pizza millett dish. that would work. cook millett in a rice steamer and top with sauce, veggies, and vegan cheez if you please.

lastly, i’m sorry to hear of your nanna’s passing. i’ve been playing catch-up reading posts and apologize for the late condolences.

  16. laci says

Awsome oats, maybe it could be even more decadent with some non dairy butter (thik EB) and choc. chip granola! Worth a shot… 😉

  17. Anna says

Nice work converting her! Every time someone says that she isn’t an oatmeal fan, I just think, you are NOT eating the right kind of oats!

  18. Stacie says

It’s not pizza oatmeal, but I had sloppy joe quinoa for lunch today!

I had left over sloppy joe stuff but no bread and left over quinoa (I like quinoa for breakfast). I mixed sloppy joe stuff and quinoa and warmed it up and sprinkled vegan parmesan on it. It was really good. I think I liked it better than sloppy joes on bread, although I still like the quinoa (blended with banana) better as an oatmeal alternative.

  19. Kristie says

You are a PRO. That oatmeal sounds faaaaabulous. I adore chocolate chip cookie dough. Probably more than I adore the actual cookies. Therefore I just might have to make this decadent bowl soon. But there’s no way I would miss out on adding banana in there!

  20. shellyfish says

I’m thinking that pretty much anything is better with chocolate added, but that might just be me!
Might have to have this for breakfast mañana!

  21. River (Wing-it Vegan) says

Exorcise me!! I would LOVE to like oatmeal! Mr. Wing-it eats it for breakfast every morning and it always smells so good, but my taste buds reject it every time I try it. Grrr!!

Congrats to your oatmeal-hating friend for crossing over to the oat side!

  22. Jenn (eating bender) says

Haha, just got caught up on the “pizza oats” and all that gloriousness. That would definitely be a savory experience, to say the last! I think I may prefer chocolate chip cookie dough oatmeal 😉 It looks great, CCV!

  23. Meredith says

This is great! I totally don’t understand how anyone can say they don’t like oatmeal because oatmeal just presents so many possibilities that there’s at least one for everyone!

  24. lauren says

    Miss Katie,

I made this oatmeal last night to have for breakfast this morning.. the only addition is that I added some cookies and cream spirutein protein powder. The end result: I basically had to practice self control to not eat it last night and save it for the morning.. ANd I was so excited for breakfast that I couldnt wait to go to bed to wake up and eat breakfast.. ahhah nerd, i know!

    Great ideas CCK!

  25. veganhomemade says

You are the oatmeal queen! I’ll say it: I don’t like oatmeal. But I do like oat bran, so I hope I can still be in the club. Blending oatmeal is an interesting prospect though, I bet I would like that! Especially with all that chocolate in it.

  26. Hanna M. says

Made an oatmeal bowl not too dissimilar from this (oatmeal w/pinch of salt, slathered in lots of coconut butter and sprinkled with cocoa nibs). Gosh, one bowl kept me happy for hours and hours! Gotta love oatmeal… and especially with chocolate in any form 🙂

  27. bumbee hankypants says

wow, I didn’t think I could be more addicted to oatmeal, but after finding your website I think I will be. Just tried the recipe, but subbed the milk for chocolate soy protein powder and water. and with the walnuts and chocolate chips it really tastes like cookie dough. Thank you! Will work through your recipes the next months 🙂 I think I need to freeze 10 bananas now and go buy some silken tofu^^

  28. Johnny says

Hey, a friend just introduced me to your recipe blog here and I am in love! I’ve been going through all of your oatmeal recipes and I am totally amazed, but I have a couple tips from one decadent but healthy oatmeal lover to another. For one of the most simple, lowest calorie and most dessert like bowls of Oatmeal, instead of adding water or plain milk to your oats, add a cup of one of the sweet Syntrax Nectar protein shakes (I prefer the chocolate truffle one in mine). I mix one cup of the protein shake with two packs of instant oatmeal in the morning. Somehow the protein shake, not only adds protein, making it extra healthy, but it also changes the texture of the oatmeal, giving it a softened ooeey gooeey cookie texture. The Syntrax Nectar shakes are only 100 calories a cup, each packet of oatmeal is 100 calories. So if you make the extra large bowl (I always do), it’s only 300 calories. From there, I usually like to add a tablespoon of some Da Vinci Sugar Free Peanut Butter flavored syrup (0 calories). to the chocolate truffle oatmeal. The end result tastes almost exactly like a no bake cookie (the chocolate, peanut butter, and oats kind). But there’s so many variations you can do with the protein shake flavors, the sugar free syrup flavors, and added fruits. Definitely try it out sometime : )

  29. Carolina says

I just made this for myself, delicious!! I added a bit of homemade coconut butter and about a teaspoon of almond butter. I think the melted banana made the whole meal, though!

  30. Kathleen says

You`ve converted me to oats too! I have absolutely hated the mushy gooey stuff since forever! Then I come to your blog with innocent expectations of chocolate and wind up with chocolate goo! Yuck yuck yuck. Yet, after seeing all the weird things that can be done to oatmeal, I decided togive it a try. It was awesome! Maybe I hated it back then because I didn`t know about the gluten issue… with gluten free steel cut oats it is great (I`m sorry I use the wrong kind of oats, but they taste so much better knowing they have more fiber and health!)

  31. Dawn says

I made this for my breakfast this morning. I let it blend a bit too long, but that is okay, I learned a new way to have drinkable oatmeal!! It was great, thanks for another good recipe!

  32. Emma says

Eating this as I speak… absolutely amazing! I had the peanut butter oatmeal and actually licked the bowl (my sisters still making fun of me). Looks like I might have oatmeal for multiple meals today because I can’t wait until tomorrow to try more of your recipes!

  33. Kelly Cara says

Creative Katie – here are my user’s notes: I made this yesterday using the voluminous oatmeal recipe with almond milk instead of water. I could only heat it in the microwave for 3.5 minutes (instead of the recommended 4.5 min.) because the milk got bubbly at that point and was about to decorate my microwave. After letting it sit in the microwave for the additional 5 min., I transferred the oats to the fridge over night. The milk didn’t absorb all the way (I’ll make it with water next time), so I omitted the extra half cup of milk in this recipe. It turned out well but didn’t all fit in one cereal bowl. I would consider this a recipe for two, rather than just one, lucky person:)

  34. Alexa says

So I have made many of your oatmeal creations and I have come up with quite a few of my own. This morning I went to make this oatmeal and I have made it many times before and when I threw it in the magic bullet it came out like soup. It looked like and had the consistency of frothy hot chocolate. That’s never happened to me before. Lol. At least it was still yummy and I ended up just drinking it out of the bowl.

  35. Avra-Sha Faohla says

Hmm . . . I had the same problem as the previous person who commented: it came out really soupy! I was surprised that it had a 1/2 cup of milk instead of the usual 1/8 cup but followed the recipe anyway. After adding all the milk and giving it four blender pulses, I had chocolate-ish liquid with oatmeal bits, not a bowl of oatmeal. It didn’t taste like good chocolate milk or anything; the flavor was diluted. Where does all the milk go for all the other people who have had success with this?

    • Unofficial CCK Helper says

Maybe your microwave is not as powerful and therefore there is still too much liquid when you go to make the recipe? Microwave times and powers can vary. Or maybe you need to blend it longer as well.

      • Avra-Sha Faohla says

I used a stovetop, not microwave, and I didn’t cook the oats ahead of time. But I don’t see how any of that should be an issue as the 1/2 cup of milk is added after all that.

          • Avra-Sha Faohla says

It says “You can cook the oats ahead of time and fridge them until you’re ready to proceed with the recipe.” That sounds optional to me. . . .

(I appreciate you trying to help me figure this out, by the way!)

  36. Susan says

OOOOOOHH!!!!!!!! I think I’m in love! Will definitely have to try this one! Seems like it would also be good as overnight oats.

  37. Michelle says

Eating this with my little guy for breakfast this morning he says “YOU ARE LITERALLY THE BEST MOM EVER!” When I asked why he said “Because you let me eat all this junk food for breakfast.” If he only knew!
