Flower Power

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on March 24, 2009

Last summer, I made cupcakes for the birthday party of my then-boyfriend’s sister.  The birthday girl and her guests went crazy over the completely-edible sailboat, butterfly, watermelon, swimmer, flip-flops, etc. (Pictures here) Their parents all took down my phone number, and one of the party-goers recently called me with this request: Could I please make cupcakes for her birthday? But of course!  Hmmm, now what kind of cupcakes would I be asked to make?

Perhaps she’d request shimmery, magical mermaids? Or cute, cuddly animals? With visions of Disney Princesses dancing in my head, I excitedly asked the little girl what she wanted on her cupcakes.

“Flowers,” she said, matter-of-factly.

“Different flowers on each cupcake?”

“Nope; all the same.”

Well o-kaaay.  It was her birthday, after all. And so, the following cupcakes were born:

kloveblue

klovegreenklovepink

klove2

And they all lived happily ever after.

Edited to add: The cupcake recipe I used is the Classic Vanilla recipe found in Vegan Cupcakes take over the World.  I used the same frosting as in this post.  (I colored the frosting with Wilton food coloring.)  And the flowers are made of fondant, which means they’re 100% edible!

I personally make it a whole foods cooking rule to try and avoid decorating food with themes- but if ever I were to go against that rule- it would have to be with your sweet pretty cupcakes.

Wow, those look fabulous. What do you use to make you icing–it always looks so perfect. The alternating cupcake colors remind me of spring. I agree: you should definitely think about starting a cupcake shop. I bet it would be fabulous.

I love making my boyfriend cupcakes, the dairy-free icing is always my problem so my cupcakes end up icing-less and naked. And I think he’s starting to miss brightly frosted cupcakes too.

Awww, those are sooo pretty! You are way cupcake-talented! I don’t always have the patience to spend a ton of time making my desserts, mostly because I’m always in a hurry to eat them! But I guess it’s different when you’re baking for a “customer,” and you really want them to think vegan food is fun. Great job! :)

You should totally open a cupcake shop. You could team up with Duff from Ace of Cakes since he hates making cupcakes, but definately has the demand :) I mean, cupcakes rock!

Have you considered starting a little cupcake business? These are really cute unlike the spray-on florescent colors they use on grocery store cupcakes. I bet you’d get a ton of customers!
