April Showers bring May Brides

No longer am I excited to:

· Turn 16 and get a car

· Turn 18 and be allowed to vote

· Turn 21 and be an adult

I’ve reached an age where I understand why my mom never wants another birthday.

Knowing I’ve passed all those milestones makes me feel oooooold!  And it doesn’t help matters when my friends—people my age!—start getting married and popping out babies.  My middle-school best friend is already married with two kids, and, just last month, an ex-boyfriend became a dad.  Somebody stop this ride!  It’s moving too darn fast!

Hyperventilation aside, it was an honor to be put in charge of cake-decorating for a friend’s bridal shower.  At least that enabled me to focus on the cake, not the meaning behind it! Don’t get me wrong; I love weddings… the friends, the food, the dancing(!). It’s just what weddings signify that scares me. No, not love and commitment; growing up! Ahhh! hehehe 😉

(The bride is made of fondant, the icing is the same as this vegan icing, and the cake is adapted from Vegan Cupcakes take over the World.  The veil and flowers are not edible.)

That cake is adorable! I have yet to play with fondant, but I think I’d have a lot of fun with it. The bride is cute, and the cake is just so darn happy! 🙂

  2. Krista says

Imagine how I feel at 35 with an almost 10yr old and a 7 year old!! YIKES!!! Mind you, I wouldn’t trade the ride for anything!! 🙂

That cake is gorgeous! I think your friend will LOVE it!! 🙂

  3. jen molica says

all these people talking about feeling “old” in their 20’s and 30’s seems kinda silly. don’t get me wrong, i validate everyone’s feelings, but i was told that the following criteria means you’re getting old:

*obsession over getting enough fiber in your diet (check)
*complaining that the music is too damn loud or what the “kids” are listening to is a bunch of garbage (an occasional check)
*hesitation to go places because the trafic is too bad (check)
urges to eat at buffet style restaurants and steal packets of ketchup (not there yet)
*periods of “resting my eyes” sprinkled throughout the day (IN MY DREAMS!)
*a heavy investment in polyester (not even close, but i do prefer wearing mom-jeans)

  4. Teresa says

Damn girl, you must be reading my mind! I just turned 23 on Friday and it is just weird. For my b-day my mom took me for my first massage and I told her this was a much better way to spend my 23rd than planning for a wedding in a month like she was doing on her 23rd birthday. I cannot even imagine getting married ANYTIME soon (or ever, for that matter). I totally know what you mean about friends getting married, and having kids, because it’s been happening with my friends too. CRAZY! I’m sticking to the single life!

Is your birthday coming up soon?

  5. coco says

amazing cake!!! Getting old is not that dramatic, even though I turned into 28 last christmas, I’ll keep celebrating it because it’s great to have lived one year more in the life that I have with the persons that I love~~~ 😀

  6. Erin says

I feel the same way! It totally freaks me out, and I wish everyone would stop it. I no longer need any more birthdays.
Buuut, that cake is really cute! I’m so impressed with your decorating skills. I have the most unsteady hands in the world and cann’t imagine doing that.
Love your oaties (or kamut flakes), they look so creamy!

  7. selina says

i feel your pain. know 4 people having babies right now. and people who i remember being babies are out of high-school/having babies themselves, its all very strange.

25 is a nice milestone. usually at 25 your car insurance cost goes down. after that though… nothing. nothing.

  8. ohkansascity says

I know what you mean about this whole growing up thing. So many people I went to high school with are getting married or having babies and it’s strange. Hell, my little sister is engaged!

  9. Lisa C. says

    LOL.

Katie, I’m old enough to be your mother. (And to make things really interesting, I have a sister that’s only a couple of years younger than you.). I remember turning 25 (I was still in college, the oldest person on my dorm floor), and thinking jeez, I’m old.

Then I decided that once you get past 21, you are as old as you think you are.

I celebrate each and every birthday because it means another year that I’ve walked the earth.

    (and I think I’m … hmmm … 32 today).

  10. Yasmin says

I know exactly how you feel! I am about to turn 26 in18 more days and I feel old! My friends are all married and popping out kids but I’m still single, teaching, and working on my Masters. I’m proud of my accomplishments but still feel behind 🙁

  11. Sagan says

I’m just amazed at the number of people I know who are getting married and/or having babies. I’m not ready for that kind of commitment, eek! 🙂

  12. Marianne says

You wanna talk old? I’m turning the big 3-0 this year. EEK! I would say that the majority of my school friends are married, have houses, kids, etc. I feel sort of the odd one out, and yet, perfectly fine with it 🙂

Very cute cake though 🙂 And I love the penguin cup!

PS – I guess I’ll allow you a seat on the Canucks playoff bandwagon 😉

  13. Virginia says

I posted about my chocolate chip cookie dough oatmeal experience on my blog for the two extra entries! I also made up a new oatmeal. I can say that I like oatmeal now, yay!

  14. Ricki says

Gorgeous cake! You have one lucky friend. 🙂

I felt the same way you did in my 20s. Then I hit my 30s. THEN I hit my 40s. . . . believe me, you’re still young! I still love birthdays and am thankful for them (though I wouldn’t mind being back in my 20s, knowing what I know now!) 😉

  15. carolinebee says

so weird about friends and stuff getting married and having BABIES ah!! haha i can barely keep up with myself right now 😀

  16. Happy Vegan Lady says

Oh gosh, I know EXACTLY how you feel! Whenever I hear about people I went to school with getting married or having babies I immediately think “but you’re TOO YOUNG”… then I remember that no, at 21 that’s not seen as too young any more. But it’s still really strange! Your cake on the other hand looks FANTASTIC (Would we expect anything less? I think not!). I’ve told a few friends of mine that if they buy some ingredients, I’ll bake things for them (I’m thinking chocolate and banana brownies, or peanut butter blondies, or coconut-chocolate bars…. mmm….). I might have to persuade them to let me do something with fondant (although it won’t last long with three hungry boys around!).

  17. Kate says

Wo…I feel so bad for being totally clueless but I had NO IDEA you were over 21?!?! Wow. You look young in a good way! You must get that all the time-you’ll love that when you’re older! My friends and I just discussed that this weekend-it’s so exciting to be turning 21! And yet, while you’re obs not old after that, it’s just you stop loving the birthdays b/c that’s the last big one. Sad!

  18. Vegyogini says

We only get so many birthdays in our lives and each one should be celebrated to the fullest!

Wow, your friends move so quickly…just remember to wait until you’re absolutely ready.

  19. Shelby says

I’m only 16 and yet I feel the same way!!! AHH! STOP! haha

Lovely cake Katie! You are SO talented girl.

I must make that snickerdoodle oatmeal again because it is absolutely phenomenal!

  20. Laura says

omg that cake is beautiful Im totally impressed. And I agree, its freaking me out that people are starting to get married and whatnot, I feel like it totally all snuck up too fast. have fun with the shower! 🙂

  21. Vaala says

What a beautiful cake! I know the feeling. I remember getting an invitation to my best friend’s engagement party and I honestly thought it must have been some kind of joke ’cause I thought we were all too young to get married! Doesn’t get any easier as you get older either!

  22. Kiki says

Aww Katie, I think you’re moving at the perfect pace! 22 with 2 kids seems a bit rushed!

Lovely cake! When I get married I’ll totally hire you to decorate my cake :]

  23. Sarah says

I know how you feel – all my elementary school friends are moving into “that” stage of life, and though I just turned 21 I’m like “where am I going?? I’m stuck!!”.

    Beautiful cake though, I’m jealous!

  24. Emily says

    Katie,

I can’t say I can relate too, too much because I’m only 18, but I already have two friends who are married. And one girl I went to grade school with had a baby. But you definately aren’t old. And remember you’re only as old as you feel! You can always be a kid @ heart!

    With Love,

    Emily

  25. Meghan Telpner says

The age thing has never phased me. I turned 25 twice because the first time around, I was too sick to enjoy it. I caught up the next year with the normal age as I was back to health. On my 29th- I was asked for ID at the bar. This year I’ll be turning 30 which is just fine with me.

  26. Coconutgal says

Katie I totally know what you mean about feeling old! Except I am one of those weirdos like your friend who is already married. But let me tell you, getting married does not make you feel old! It’s quite fun 🙂
That cake is so cute! Did you get to eat some of it?

  27. Coconutgal says

P.S. I just realize my comment doesn’t make sense! I said I know what you mean about feeling old, but being married doesn’t make you feel old. Dork.
I guess I meant I relate in the fact that I have passed those “milestones” as well, but being married hasn’t aged me. It’s been fun and I’ve learned a lot. And I’m married to an older man 😉
    When’s your birthday?

  28. jodye717 says

That cake is gorgeous, and hooray for snickerdoodle cereal (which I still desperately need to make, so thanks for the reminder)!

  29. Jessica (jesslikesithot) says

Aww that cake is adorable!!! And you can still be excited for birthday’s, it’s another day where you get to celebrate, eat good food and be with family and friends!!! And get lots of good gifts, if your friends know you well….it’s another chance to possibly get more larabars, cooking utensils, chop sticks (?!?!) 🙂

  30. Vegetation says

I was pregnant with my eldest at 19 and got married at 21 😛 That being said, you are NOT old!! Wait till you hit your 30th birthday and realize you are officially leaving your 20’s behind 🙁 Even scarier when you realize your daughter will be turning 10 in a couple of months and off to high school in just 2 years *hobbles off with walking stick in tow*.

Love the cake! I wish someone would come and make ME such awesome wonderfulness!

  31. burpexcuzme says

Haha, such a cuuute cake! It’s the kind I will not let anyone slice into it until it’s all green and moldy.
ignore the penguin cup? NEVER! penguins are such adorable waddly creatures, and I LOVE the cup!

  32. ~Jessica~ says

Oh, I know that getting old feeling so well. I still feel seventeen and all of a sudden I’m 23! Where did those years go?

But don’t feel pressured or down because of the way others are living their lives ~ do what makes you happy and if you feel like jumping in a puddle like a four year old, do it!

Hehe, not that I’ve ever done that…anyway, beautiful cake and great eats (although I must be the only person in the world who really doesn’t like Jocolat bars!?) I simply must buy a better blender so I can try out some of your creations.

  33. Kristie says

The fast pace of life FREAKS me out! One of my close friends has a two year old child. I am constantly hearing about people I went to high school with getting married. It makes me feel so old yet at the same time so so YOUNG. I am not nearly ready to move onto those steps of my life yet. I feel like I’m just beginning to live! I’m not ready to settle in and get cozy! Let’s be real here, I’m definitely still a kid in way too many respects to do all that “grown-up” stuff just yet.

That being said, your friend’s bridal shower cake is gorgeous and one of these days when I eventually DO grow up enough, I’m calling on YOU for MY bridal shower cake 😉

  34. Mariposa says

im 27, and i went to a “party” at a college in Boston a few weeks ago. the last time i had been on campus there was almost 10 years before. I said that out loud at one point and the person i was talking to shouts out “damn girl how OLD are you??????” I think i turned bright red!!! is that a bad thing or what.. lol

if you are only as old as you feel however.. mentally im about 20. physically? about 45!!!!! gotta get crack-a-lackin on the yoga!

love the cake, it is beautiful

  35. Lauren says

I know what you mean. Although I am married I still don’t like getting older. I actually think I am going through a quarter life crisis. I turned 25 in Feb and I just added 3 hot pink streaks to my hair! 🙂 T is 27, I keep making fun of him for being so close to 30! My day will come!!!

  36. Jodye says

I forgot that I have a question for you: do you use a mac, because I’m trying to move my blog to wordpress, but it does something strange with the formatting and I was wonder if maybe you’re just a genius?

  37. Jessica says

Well, I’m 26 and I’ve been married for almost 6 years now…so I’m on the other side, lol. I’m lucky enough to be married to the best guy in the whole world 🙂 Not that I’m biased at all…

Beautiful cake, your decorating skills are awesome! I can make my stuff taste good but it’s never beautiful!

  38. Liz says

    What a great cake!

Too cool Katie. I wish you were in Boston to make my bridal shower cake!

And yes, life move’s way too fast.

  39. River (Wing-it Vegan) says

The cake is absolutely gorgeous! Congrats to Nikki!

I went through that “I don’t want to get old” thing when I turned 30. Next year will have a reverse-effect and I will turn 29. Who’s gonna stop me?

  40. Elyse says

That cake is just precious! It’s so funny you bring the subject up…one of my best friends told me today that she’s getting engaged. When did we get old enough for this?

  41. laci says

You are an AMAZING cookie/cupcake/cake designer, missy!
You are NOT old at all- 22 is so young in my opinion for kids/getting married, you must not at all feel obligated to be pressured! Enjoy your youth, 22 is only in grad. school!
Love your “second” breakfast, was your first a halved amy’s burger and a few cubes of fruit, then your 7 mile run? :-0 I wish I could keep up for 7 whole miles!

  42. jrsimon56 says

It is that time in life…and it just gets weirder! 🙂 But, at least cakes can help keep our minds off it all….

  43. shellyfish says

I’m so behind on blog-reading – was it your birthday? You know, I felt “oldest” when I turned 23, 23 and gulp, 25 – but after that, it stopped bothering me. I used to look at what everyone else around me had already accomplished and beat myself down for not having done more (even though I’d done quite alot, it was just never enough), now I really feel like I don’t worry, and feel pretty excited when my birthday comes around because I look damn good (thanks to being vegan and a runner), better than oodles of kids my age!
    Pretty cake!
