New Food Challenge Wrap-Up

June 1, 2009
by Chocolate-Covered Katie

I hope you all have had as much fun with the New Food Challenge as I’ve had.  In fact, I enjoyed broadening my food horizons so much that although the challenge is technically over, I’m going to continue trying (and hopefully blogging about) a new food per week.  Here’s to discovering many more favorites :) .

.

Below, a look back at my experiences during the Challenge (with links to my old posts)

I found that I didn’t Care for a Kumquat

Thankfully, the Monster-Mashed Cauliflower saved the meal.

.

Kabocha is my newest true love.  It makes for beyond-awesome lettuce wraps, and it shines (not just because of its orange hue!) in a Broccoli-Kabocha Bowlbnut

z 270It’s also out-of-this-world smooth and velvety in the form of Kabocha Mousse

This was a let-down.    z 265

Too bad, because it looks so pretty!

.

But this was super-fantastically amazing.  I loved how it soaked up the sauce like a sponge!whatis

Behold the spongey-ness!

.

And finally, I channelled my inner mermaid (and reaped health benefits galore) with this recipe

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the challenge.  It really meant a lot to me that y’all played along!

In my next post, I’ll announce the winner of the New Food Challenge.  But, like I’ve said before, everyone is a winner who found a new food to enjoy! :) .

i liked this challenge.. i didn’t do as much as i wanted but i did try brussel sprouts, spaghetti squash, canelli beans and carob chips ;) better than nothign! i ended up LOVING carob chips – i have like a tbsp or 2 (or 3) for dessert many nights.. brussel sprout were also deeeelish.. i wasn’t a huge fan of the spaghetti squash though – but i think it was because i ate it cold at work (no microwave). anyways i like this post a lot – i want to try some of your new finds!!

I loved this challenge so much- even though I didn’t try anything overly exciting, have got lots of ideas for upcoming meals… Thanks for doing this!

I had fun with this challenge but missed the boat with the hulled hemp seeds I tried for the first time today!

I wish starfruit’s were as tasty as they looked! :P

And kumquats are super cute too! Too bad, toooo bad! At least you’ve found some different foods to make up for the one’s you didn’t particularly care for ;)

I guess I got pretty lucky, as all the new foods I tried, I liked!

Can’t wait to see who the winner is! Gonna be one lucky, lucky foodie ;)

    Love,
    Meg

I loved this contest Katie! Even though it’s over I am still going to keep trying new foods, I already bought something new to try yesterday. Thanks for the fun opportunity.

This was tons of fun! I haven’t done the best job at blogging about it (been busy!) but I have found some new loves too. I am so glad you tried kabocha– I found it last year and when they stopped carrying it towards spring I just about cried, then when it came back this fall I bought like the entire box full :-D It disappeared again for a while but this week they were BACK! Yayyyy! Have a good week :-D

Hope your summer has been going well. Mine sure has!

Love how you’ve talked about the dishes that didn’t turn out so well and the dishes that turned out amazing- the mistakes are always worth it! Congrats on your challenge :)

It’s great to see that your challenge made so many people discover new, (hopefully) delicious foods! I’ll definitely try to keep up with trying new foods myself as often as I can, so thanks for the inspirations :)

    Katie,
Don’t even get me started on my love of kabocha. I eat it steamed everyday with nut butter. I ran out, and had to resort to a butternut squash. Never realized how stringy butternut squashes are. Good, but I want my kabocha!

Thanks for hosting the challenge. Loved it. :)

Kabocha is definitely my favorite new thing too! Love it!

You did expand some major horizons. Thanks for bringing us all into it!

I agree; starfruit is totally disappointing. …I still have to try kabocha! It looks good! I’m writing it on my grocery list now. :)

I loved reading about all your new foods and I’m so happy you’re going to try and continue with the challenge(me too!). I can always do with new meal ideas!

You really embraced the challenge and I’m glad you discovered some new foods to love. I hope you’ll try another starfruit. I’ve had some rather bland ones too, but a really ripe one is delicious!

Thanks for planning this challenge! Even though I signed on late, I was glad you inspired me to try something new (soba noodles) and now I have a pack of them in my cabinet so I can make them myself! I’ll definitely keep trying to add new foods and I think I’m going to have to check out this kabocha stuff ;-)

Very cool!! I still have never tried star fruit, I’m sad that you didn’t like it!
