Whole Earth Bakery: NYC

Whole Earth Bakery:

  • a 100%-vegan establishment
  • vast selection of gluten-free, oil-free, and wheat-free items
  • no refined sugars used

The venue, itself, defines the meaning of hole in the wall. Don’t let that deter you, as the food is delicious. Brownies, scones, turnovers, cakes, pies… I only wish I could’ve sampled more of the fare. Luckily, I successfully smuggled a vanilla cheesecake cupcake through security. (The seitan I tried to bring back was another story; they made me empty my bag so they could scan it individually.  We all know that seitan is the stuff of terrorists, right?  Well, that and liquids over 4 ounces. In the end, they did let me keep the seitan.  Thank you La Guardia Airport Security!)

A few days later, back in the comfort of my Texas home, I constructed a lovely little second breakfast around the flourless cheesecake cupcake:

tofu cupcake

The apple-juice-sweetened (?!) tofu cupcake was divine–not too sweet, but perfectly soft and full of flavor.

yummy, more cheesecake for breakfast ;). that bakery sounds divine–i would love to visit New York one day. sigh, all your adventures sound fabulous. haha, those security people always take my food away too!

the cupcake looks scrumptious! but honestly i don’t know how you were able to eat vegetables along with a cheesecake cupcake and an apple. i can never eat vegetables at the same time as fruit or dessert. so kudos to you for being able to mix flavors like that!

I think you should do a little recreation of that cupcake, I’d love to try it! 🙂

As for airport security – they did the puff test on my Mom the last time we went through! Yeah, it was pretty funny afterwards, but we were close to missing our flight because of it! I’m glad they let you have your goodies, though 🙂

    Love,
    Meg

Delicious! I travel all the time and the four ounces of liquid rule is the stupidest thing ever. Le sigh.

That cheesecake cupcake looks so cute and innocent! There’s this italian bakery by where my parents live and they offer “sugar-free” treats. Surprisingly they’re not sweetened with splenda but rather apple juice. So I guess technically they’re not sugar-free, but I’m glad they have this alternative 🙂 And surprised as well!

I wonder if they have Pearl River Mart over where I am. I’m moving to a new place soon and I feel like getting cute bowls!

Have a great day!! 🙂

You enjoyed NYC in the most delicious way! And somehow you managed to try a bunch of things I’ve never done, and I even LIVE here! But then again, I’ve never even gone to the top of the Empire State Building…

ha ha. did you pronounce it “satan” for added effect?
i’m hoping this new no-liquids rule will finally be the catalyst for an airline food revolution. i had to guzzle my green juice before passing security on my last trip because i didn’t have a prescription for it.
