Anyone remember the Mighty Duck movies? Yeah, they were dumb.. but as someone obsessed with all things hockey, I loved ‘em. Plus, some of the characters, including Adam (a.k.a. Cake Eater), were quite adorable
. (He was especially cute in the last movie, but sadly the only picture I could find of him is the one below.)
(Above, a twelve-year-old’s dream date)
A few weeks ago, a reader left me this question:
CCV, you are the skinniest girl I think I have ever seen. I have to admit that you do seem to eat well, and so I am pretty jealous that you can eat so much and stay so thin. But I’ve gotta know: Do you ever eat cake? Or cookies? Or really unhealthy things? And no, your crustless pumpkin pie doesn’t count. Nor do cupcakes made with stevia. I mean real cake.
My Answer:
As I wrote once before, my diet—although high in calories—is pretty-darn low in sugar.
(Here’s why.)
.
.
I eat sweets every day, but they’re usually in the form of chocolate (Wild Bars, Jocalats, Nectars, etc.), nut butters, blended grain puddings, and/or fruit-based snacks (like All-Fruit Ice Cream).
Give me some good-quality chocolate over cloying, artificial-tasting cake any day!
But every now and then, my m.i.a. sweet tooth pops out and asks demands to be satisfied.
It is at times such as these that I indulge in goodies such as:
Mr. Rich-and-Creamy Cheezecake (or his New York City cousin, the Cheesecake Cupcake).
Stay tuned, because my next post will also feature cake. And thanks for the question!
Question of the day:
What’s your favorite cake flavor? Being such a huge chocoholic, you’d think mine would be chocolate. But the truth is I’m actually not too fond of chocolate cake. However, I do love a good chocolate mousse pie.
(4 days ’til my birthday… gotta start thinking about cake again!)

I’m very curious about this crustless pumpkin pie. Is the recipe posted somewhere. I love pumpkin pie, but can’t have the crust, so that would be perfect for me. I’d love you forever if you could share or direct me to where I can find it.
German chocolate is my fav…coconut, chocolate, and pecans!
CCV — do you ever get annoyed by all the comments people make about your body & diet?
i have to agree with this reader – you really are the healthiest and skinniest person I have encountered here on this site. But I am assuming it is genetics, and I knew a couple girls in high school that were just as thin and ate what they wanted due to genetics.
The cheesecake looks great!
You’re right … a lot of cake these days tastes pretty artificial, but I LOVE me some homemade cake O.O mosly the frosting
-muffy
I really love chocolate cake but I have a major major vice for lemon cake with a yummy glaze
~Justine
When I eat cake, it must be home-made. Favourite ingredients..let me think..hazelnuts, walnuts, chocolate, fruit compote (pineapple, peach, strawberry), coconut and some cherries on top! No cream but yoghurt/cottage cheese mixture if possible.
2 days until my birthday and I can’t think of anything BUT cake! Haha
I love angelfood. Though have to admit… I’m more a frosting kind of gal!
I loved Mighty Ducks!! I think it’s a Canadian thing to have to watch that movie =p Canada = ice hockey! yes? yes! haha.
Hmm…cake. My mom’s sponge cake and angel food cake are my fav. I love chocolate cakes, but so many people add weird stuff to the cake and screw them up!
oh! In Singapore, they have this lime green coloured pandan cake with coconut flakes. SO GOOD!! or at least, when I last had them some years ago, they were =p It’s been a while since I’ve had store bought cakes…
As much as I love chocolate, I don’t like it in cake form either. Although you do know I love chocolate mousse
How does that cheesecake look creamier and yummier this time around? I wish I had the recipe, mmm!
Confession: I’ve never seen the mighty ducks before (gasp)!
Oh cake how I love thee. I honestly don’t know what kind of cake is my fav. Anything HOMEMADE really, no matter what flavour. I love it in chocolate, vanilla, carrot… as long as it’s made straight from the kitchen with some good old fashion arm muscle and tender loving care.
I’m getting kind of pumped for fall season pies right now though!
I definitely did not grow up a healthy eater, but I never liked cake- I especially hated frosting. I always favored, brownies, choc chip cookies, and ice cream. That being said, at my friend’s 12-year-old birthday party I finally met my cake dream- CARROT CAKE. I remember being stunned that not only did I like it, heck I LOVED it. Sadly I didn’t have much carrot cake before going vegan, and since going vegan have only indulged in one carrot cupcake from Babycakes bakery in NYC when I visited there. I sure do love baking, but for some reason cakes intimidate me.
Whew, now how’s that for a long-winded answer to a simple question?
MIGHTY DUCKS! You are awesome for bringing me back to the nostalgia of those movies. I would still watch any movie in the series today if someone had the movie.
My favorite cake flavor is just a chocolate cake with strawberries and whipped cream icing. Yum.
You know, I have never seen The Mighty Ducks?
i went to high school with a family full of girls built just like you-when i first saw your site i honestly thought maybe you were one of the younger sisters
some people are built like that…
and red velvet cake, with cream cheese icing is my fav… tasty AND pretty!
Dear Katie,
first of all, I am a huge fan of yours. Since I discovered your blog a few weeks ago, you have inspired me truly to become a healthier vegan. I suffer(ed) from hair loss, water retention and anemia (to name just a few), because I was scared of certain (high-fat) foods (e.g. nuts, PB) and my diet was way too low in protein. Now I enjoy those daily and have not gained, as I always feared and feel so much more vital and energetic. So thank you very, very much for being such a great rolemodel!
But to answer your question, my all-time-favorite (besides Cherry-Pudding-Pie) is also “Cheese”cake. And what a coincidence, I just made the most heavenly “Creamcheese” filling for breakfast this morning. I had some leftover PB-Soymilk-Agar pudding in the fridge and blended it with the same amount of silken tofu, a little apple cider vinegar and vanilla flavored stevia. It was so delicious I had to make another cup and freeze it. Now I am alll excited to see how it came out.
Greetings from Berlin, Germany
Melissa
I wish I had that kind of restraint against sweets! Your sweets intake is mostly all healthy stuff…I have a weakness for vegan donuts and cupcakes and cookies and pie and well, anything with sugar.
Yay, another Mighty Ducks (movie) fan! I, too, love all things hockey. I grew up in a hockey family: my dad turned down a spot in the NHL but kept playing and coaching until a few years ago, so I have hockey in my blood. I must admit, Adam Banks was my first (only?) movie crush. Wow, I cannot believe I just admitted to that.
I’m not a big fan of chocolate cake either. I prefer carrot cake or pineapple coconut cake or just plain white cake. For my birthdays, I usually request something other than cake: cookies, pumpkin pie, mum’s homemade cinnamon buns, waffles, etc. I’m not a huge sweets person either – too much sugar makes me feel nauseated. I love making sweets, just not so much eating them.
Oh, and how could I forget zebra cake! It’s made with light and dark batter layered so the cake has zebra stripes when you cut into it. Like this:

im strangely not a huge cake person! now cupcakes…thats a whole different story! my favorite cakes are ice cream cakes!
I’m a HUGE red velvet and carrot cake person, but I say enjoy what you love and leave what you don’t!
I love chocolate, too, but my fave cake flavour would be carrot!
Happy early b-day, Katie!!
Interestingly, I only developed a deep though infrequently indulged love for cake later in life. Though I passionately love chocolate itself, the Achilles Heel of cake for me is carrot cake. I hope you get to have your fave on your b-day!
hmmm
i am so shocked that people are so upset by your thin-ness..really??
and you should sit like a bump on a log and eat cookies and chips all day to try to get fat like the rest of the world instead of eat well, take care of yourself and feel good?
oh, is our society messed up or what? ….i mean seriously–i doubt they read a big person’s blog and say–”hey–do you know you’re fat? why are you so fat?”
i think you look great…and i know some “skinny” girls that would love a little curve…sometimes it’s hard being so skinny (so i hear, lol)
n-e-ways
cake
ah yes…so many to love
my favorite would be a triple chocolate i make with rainbow chip frosting
from a bakery/store–i’m like you–don’t like the chocolate
prefer white or at least marble…or some other flavor
there are many cakes who i would make friends with
but…sugar makes me feel AWFUL…so i try to avoid it when i can…or at least eat it with a healthy meal to try to battle the sugar high/crash
OMG I have always had a sweettooth. Cake, cookies, chocolate, I’ve always loved it. Lately though, the better I eat and am high raw/all vegan, the less I crave sweets. I still love great dark chocolate but the rest of the stuff I’ve gottta really be tempted to want it. I am also gluten free so that wipes out lots of stuff..just as well though. Your cheesecake looks divine!
My favourite cake isn’t chocolate cake either, and I too am a massive chocoholic! (I do like it, but it’s not my favourite), I’m pretty boring, I actually like plain or vanilla flavoured cakes the best! Homemade victoria sponge… mmm…
Thanks for your response! Favorite cake…ugh. I think the one my mom made for my last birthday, with cherries and chocolate ganache. Purrrfect.
cake is usually amazing no matter what flavor. I think, if I hhhhhad to pick, that I would go with carrot cake
I am not a huge cake fan. I prefer something fudgier and richer, like a brownie. But I do like gingerbread, spice cake and carrot cake a lot.
katie,
i don’t care what you eat. i love you fiercely. i understand readers are just curious, but good lord–why is it that so many people make crazy assumptions based on people’s body types? if someone is skinny, they must have an eating disorder or that so-often-assumed “healthy” if thin. but if someone is fat–look out there, whoo! that person feels the pressure by others to cut back on what they eat and it is automatically assumed that one is lazy or an undisciplined vegan because they might be a larger person.
i happen to know several larger than life vegans, tipping the scales at several tons! they’re called cows, elephants, and hippos. people come in all sizes–much of this is good ol’ genetics and it makes me mega sad that so many people try to fight what heredity and biology gave them. biology made you thin. biology made me thick. i’m sooo grateful for variety!
(((grumble))))

Ah, the Mighty Ducks! I watched those movies a lot when I was a kid. Flying V all the way!
I love cake way too much. Correction: I love sugar way too much. I recognize that it makes me feel crappy, but it tastes so good! I’ve gotten better at choosing more naturally sweet food most of the time when my sweet tooth starts yelling, but birthday cake time means serious frosting time for me.
Blended grains & nut butter – yes.
Sugar – nah.
I like it.
Horray for another Virgo!
I wish I could be satisfied with just chocolate… but I like chocolate with cake… or cookies… or whatever. My favorite cake flavor would have to be chocolate with peanut butter. Second would be banana peanut butter cake. Okay, I have to stop talking about cake.
Um, it bugs me that that girl’s comment was kind of rude.
I love that you answered it sweetly (no pun) and remained kind, good-hearted CCK.
Carrot cake is my favorite kind of cake =D
I really like the Jocalat bars for a chocolate fix.
You keep doing what you’re doing and keep up the awesome blog! I get so much inspiration for meals from your blog.
Happy early birthday!
I don’t eat this anymore, but my favorite cake used to be German Chocolate:)
Favorite cake flavor? Ohhhh that’s a hard one! I’d have to go with vanilla or a really chocolate-y chocolate. If that makes sense
<3 jess
xoxo
I’m a fellow chocoholic that isn’t too fond of chocolate cake. Carrot is my fav!
I don’t know that I have a favourite cake flavour. As long as it’s good cake, I’m all for it. And if it has icing, it better be quality. There is nothing I can’t stand more than dodgy store-bought icing on a cake. Totally ruins it.
I am not necessarily fond of cake but would perfer baked good breads such as banana bread with chocolate chips tossed in the batter. I guess it would kind of be like cake if you add frosting since cake is like baked good breads. Yum!
Mighty Ducks! Are you sure you aren’t my long lost sister?
Don’t hate me for saying this, but I actually don’t really like cake that much. I would much rather have straight-up frosting–in fact, I usually trade my cake my brother-in-law’s icing. My mom’s maple frosting is the best; she makes it for her spice cake.
Within the past month or so, I’ve come to the realization that I have similar feelings about very sweet foods, even though I never would have thought so! This summer I basically binged on sweets, because every time I ate some it triggered something ravenous in me, but by the time I realized I was full, it was too late – I felt nauseated and bloated and lightheaded and weighed down at the same time. Sometimes, my blood sugar soared so high because of this that I would almost tell my boyfriend to take me to the hospital….
I did this too many times to count, even though I hated the effects and even became worried that I was becoming insulin-resistant. But I moved past it and deepened my resolve a little bit more every time.
After slowly improving, I have seen that I don’t even really WANT to eat all those foods very often (except chocolate, much like yourself =D), and instead have been enjoying fruit/protein smoothies, grains, and fruits, with Larabars and the occasional Wild Bar on the side. I’m mainly posting this because that realization was a huge surprise – I always thought my sweet tooth was just something I’d always have to battle with!
As far as my favorite…these don’t really count as cakes, per se, but tiramisu and bread pudding are perennial favorites for me (and thankfully, easily veganized – Veganomicon, the cookbook, has a DELICIOUS bread pudding recipe)!
ive never been a big cake eater.
i like pie!! and berry crumbles!!
but if I did choose cake, it would be coconut!!
Carrot Cake is my favorite!
I stay away from artificial sugars too. I simply just don’t like them.
It must be so annoying for you, it seems like every other post you make is talking about your weight and your body. For what it is worth I don’t think you are skinny at all, you are a normal healthy young woman.
People badger me about my ‘skinnyness’ all the time and I just ignore them. Don’t feel like you need to respond constantly to people about your weight, Americans are obsessed with physical appearances and it is time we rise above that.
As for my favorite cake flavor I think I have 3 that tie for first place: cheesecake, sticky date with toffee, and, of course, chocolate.
I love carrot cake–anytime, any form–yum!
Hi fellow Virgo!
I actually don’t really like cake! It is weird to even write that because in general I love sweet things, but I would prefer a baked blueberry cobbler or a bowl of fresh watermelon or a piece of chocolate over cake.
Why should you have to eat unhealthy things if you don’t want to? I always feel better when I eat foods I know are good for me. I think you eat pretty fantastically CCV!
My favorite kind of cake? I’m not a huge cake fan either. I love a good blueberry cobbler, though.
