everyone and their mama is makin' Banana Brulee oatmeal

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on September 9, 2009

Banana Brulee is where it’s at.

Since starting this blog, only three readers have emailed me pictures of recipes they’ve made.  So it’s super-coincidental (and creepy in a good way!) that two of the three pictures were not only sent in the same week, they were of the same recipe!  Last week, both Ariel and Sünne sent me photos highlighting their versions of Banana Brulee Oatmeal

Meanwhile, three awesome bloggers also whipped up the recipe.  So, because I’m not yet finished with my birthday-recap post, I figured today would be a good day to pay tribute to some incredibly-deserving girlies.

Work that melted banana trick, yo.

The recipe:

Banana Brulee Oatmeal

The girls: Jenny, Ariel, Jess, Meg, and Sünne (their photos are in that order)

 Hip Hip Brulee!

(Oh my gosh that was lame!)

Question of the Day:

A few weeks ago, I highlighted this lovely fellow in the New Product Alerts section:

kefir

But I lamented the fact that the Man in Blue was hiding from me.  Well oh happy day; we’ve finally met!  And I must say Mr. Blue is darn tasty.

So now I’m asking for your help:

What is your favorite (vegan or not) recipe/way to eat kefir or yogurt?

Icings, sauces, dressings… Send me anything you got!

P.S. The Chocolate-Love Giveaway is still going on, so if you like chocolate and coconut, check it out!

Oh my gosh…that melted naner. YUM!

I love blending 1 cup almond butter with 1 cup of the plain coconut milk kefir and a packet of stevia in my Vita-Mix for a jar of ABU. I put it on everything. It’s no Banana Butter, but it’s pretty darn tasty. :)

I’ve still got to try that melted banana trick, if anything can make bananas even more delicious that would be it!

Those pics are great! I love the melted banana trick.

I have some coconut Kefir too, but I got the strawberry flavor. I like to mix it half/half with soy or rice milk, then drink it straight up (it’s a little too thick otherwise). It’s good in smoothies too!

TOO IRonic that you’re posting about coconut milk kefir…I am throwing up a post later today about making coconut milk kefir at home….so easy, so good for ya :)

My fave thing to do with kefir is just drink it. Don’t mess with or disguise that good stuff in any way!

Your oat pics look stellar, as usual :)

I’m so trying this melted banana trick next time I make oats. It sounds so yummy! Caramelized anything is the best!

I still haven’t tried the kefir. I saw it at Whole Foods, but it was way expensive. I am loving the new coconut milk coffee creamer though! As for yogurt, I like to mix in granola and blueberries and eat it as a pre-workout snack.

love the banana brulee idea…i have actually been doing that trick since this past December i just called in caramelized bananas and i just stir it into my oat bran usually…i actually think in the winter Jemima from how i mash potato or Kiki from kasha kiki came up with this…idk…well it is so yummy, and i saw a recipe in cookie magazine for creme brulee oatmeal when you put any kind of sweetener, honey/maple/sugar or agave on top of your oats under the broiler in the oven for a few minutes or use one of those fancy little torches ;) and it gets like a crust!

I have never had kefir before. Actually, I didn’t even know what it was until recently. I used to love yogurt when I still consumed dairy, but I just can’t find any vegan yogurts I like. The coconut ones are too sweet and coconutty and the soy ones are too beany. (I don’t think beany is a word, but you get the idea!) I do use plain yogurt in baking recipes though, it works well for that.

i have some kefir in my fridge but im afraid it may have gone bad. i just couldnt figure out a good way to use it… and it wasn’t that amazing in my smoothies but i dont have time for smoothies lately.

Hip Hip Brulee right back atcha!

I never had kefir yogurt pre vegan, yet I was excited to try the new Coconut Kefir. I’ve only bought it once, because it was on sale, and I only wish the price could be brought down so I could enjoy more regularly.

I tried the original flavor and usually just made messy yogurt bowls with it- kefir+ cacoa nibs+ goji berries+ fresh fruit (usually figs or blueberries)+ some seeds and/or nuts (hemp or sunflower usually)+ a drop or 2 of liquid stevia. Geez, talk about expensive. Oh well, it was a delicious treat, that I will hopefully enjoy again once it goes on another sale.

Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

I have that coconut kefir as well, and would like to know some tasty recipes too ;) Hmmm, I think I like mine so far slightly sweetened with crumbled muffins on top and a dab of nut butter!

Is there a way to get caramelised bananas without a microwave? Would melting it in a saucepan work? (I don’t have a microwave.)

Lainie September 9, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Oh that oatmeal looks divine! You have such creative recipes :) My favorite way to eat yogurt is very boring – in a big bowl piled with lots of fruits, a couple nuts and maybe some granola and/or coconut. YUM!

Woohoo! I totally made banana brulee for b-fast this morning and I actually ate mine out of a mug, just like in that picture! They are eerily similar…haha, I’ll definitely have to give it a shout out when I post!

Heck yes Banana Brulee Oats! Thanks for including me in the tribute!

I really love plain kefir or coconut kefir over a simple mix of granola with berries, I actually eat that almost every morning. I’m sure you’ll think of something more chocolate-covered and creative for your kefir though :)

Whoops: the kefir. In Sweden the best kefir type product is called Filmjolk and they just pour it in a shallow bowl and sprinkle a little sugar, perhaps some berries- YUMMmm! That’s my fave!

I have big plans to make a CCV recipe now that my camera has journeyed safely back to me. :-)

Coconut milk kefir?! I didn’t even know they made the stuff. I think I need some! I think kefir makes a nice addition to smoothies.

So jealous that you found the coconut milk kefir!
I’m pretty lame in my kefir enjoyment–I pretty much just ate it like I would yogurt: in smoothies (of course) or topped with fruit and nut butters, maybe with a little granola mixed in.

What a coincidence, I made banana brulee oats last night! with probably a full cup of walnuts, extra cashews on top, cinnamon, nutmeg, dates, and hemp vanilla ice cream all melty on top :)
Next time I’ll remember to take pics.

I like to add yogurt to my oats. First I mix cooked oats with banana soft serve. Then, I mix in nuts or nut butter and stir in some vanilla yogurt or plain Greek yogurt. I love the cool creamy combo!

Marianne September 10, 2009 at 6:09 am

I love to eat my yogurt with granola, maybe some nut butter, dried fruit. But I think the crunchy with the creamy makes a great contrast :)

love love love melted banana – good for on top of muffins too mmmmm

I made choco peanut banana butter on the weekend and lost total control. I don’t even want to think about how much fat I consumed over the two days it took to finish off the jar.

Seriously evil stuff that! It kinda makes me sad because I know I can’t have it around without going into total binge mode. Oh well – until I’m a bit better with it I’ll have to shelve it. Or wait til I have heaps of friends over to share in the goodness with me :D

Can’t wait for your birthday post!

Hey there, I’m an RD overseas with my husband in the Air Force. I don’t think there is any way I will be able to find that kefir around here. Our sommissary food comes in from Germany, so last week I bought some German yogurt products. My only problem is I don’t speak German so the ingredient list is tricky. I don’t eat gelatin, but I can locate that on a label in German, so then sos far so good on that. They have some neat combos with vanilla yogurt and then like a fruit puree on the side you mix. Looks like those cottage chese ones with the fruit. I did buy one that I have not yet tried. It is banana yogurt with mini chocoalte cornflakes on the side to be mixed in. When I do eat it I will also blog about it.

Well, I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and looking at the yummy creations you have. Enjoy your day.

I used Coconut Milk Kefir to make Ice Cream/Sorbet and Popsicles! I also poured it in my hot cereal in the AM. DE-LISH!
BTW: I keep a tupperware of banana puree (with a little squeeze of lemon juice to retain light color) in my freezer. I stir spoonfuls of it into my morning oats. Love it!

I see a Banana Brulee trend coming..or growing since it already is a hit :-) As for yogurt recipes, I am not a huge yogurt fan so unfortunatley I wouldn’t be much help :-(

I found myself wondering if you had tried this stuff yet when I first got it, I actually mena tot come by and tell you about it, but of course you already know about it!

I like the strawberry, although I don’t like it as much as the whole soy kefir

My daughter loves the coconut kefir. She mostly just drinks it out of a glass, but I’ve added it to homemade vegan coconut ice cream and other recipes!
