Dangers of a Raw Food Diet

October 9, 2009
by Chocolate-Covered Katie

Molly decided to be a Live Foodist today.  And by Live, I mean a-live.

You’d think that a dog who’s lived on this earth for twelve years would know by now that raw red ants are NOT suitable puppy chow.  Poor girl, we had to take her to the vet, and every few seconds she’d let out a yelp because an ant was biting her.  This isn’t the first time Molly’s dabbled in raw foodism, though.  She routinely likes to eat worms on the sidewalk.

My own dinner included some raw foods…

…but I chose foods that wouldn’t bite me back!

Raw components of the meal: Quickie Coleslaw, a juicy red apple, and raw kale chips (more about those below)

znyc 093

Cooked components of the meal: blended spelt pilaf and sesame-garlic tempeh strips

(I had planned on making cooked kale chips; however time got away from me, so I ended up eating them raw, dipped in Westbrae ketchup.  Ya know what?  I actually liked them better this way!)

Question of the Day:

Have you ever eaten a food, knowing full-well that it would come back to “bite” you later on?

During my failed “trying-as-hard-as-I-possibly-can-to-gain-weight” phase, I would sometimes down a pint of ice cream even though I knew that, afterwards, it’d leave me feeling cold and lethargic.  Yuck; so not worth it!

    hey girly,
love the story about Molly :)
as i am in the process of my “trying to gain weight process” again :/ i have been eating more than usual, well i guess its different… but any ways ;) hmmm what food have i eaten that has come back to “bite me” lately was idk well, you know how much i like oatmeal ha well i was so cold so i made savory oatmeal for lunch, with like chickpea and raisins, and cashews…and spices, and veggies… tried to make an Indian esque savory oatmeal bowl, and ugh it was delicious but so so filling i was in agony for the rest of the day.

    lots of love xo

The food i occasionally eat that comes back to bite me is sugar alcohol… Malitol, Sorbitol, Eurethryol (sp?)..any of the ol’s. Sometimes in a rush i grab a “healthy energy” premade bar at the store (check those ingredients ladies) and every time my stomach gets so sick…

I am secretly happy it happens though because it is a constant reminder of just how chemical those bars are, and how bad they are for us…

Soy Protein isolate does the same thing… So many other real food good things to eat so it’s just my little reminder system!!

Oh no, poor Molly! I hope she’s doing better and learns to avoid red ants in the future.

Whenever I eat too many sweets (sugar) I feel a bit ill. I’ll munch away hoping one time will be different but, sure enough, a tummy ache will follow.

  6. October 9, 2009 1:51 pm

Aww, poor silly Molly! I hope she’s all right now.

I made kale chips once, but I never had them raw like that. I love your meals!

    sugar
    makes me feel awful
yucky all over–vision seems strained, moody, miserable, exhausted
but…i still am trying to kick it
    it’s an evil drug

oh, miss molly…the things dogs do
red ants is not one i had heard of
glad she is ok…perhaps, none the wiser–like me and sugar :)

Oh with gluten, dairy, soy, and egg intolerances….if I partake in foods that have those in them (and I am much more sensitive to gluten than the rest), basically if I cheat with a food that has trace soy in it or trace egg in it….I will feel like complete crap, sick, miserable for a few days. With gluten cheating, I would be in the bathroom for a week and utterly miserable. So yeah, if I choose to have “that one bite” of something that looks soooo good….and it’s an off limits food for me, I will be sick from it. So Ive learned, dont cheat. Nothing is worth it in terms of health/not being sick!

Poor Molly! I hope she’s feeling better!

Soy comes back to bite me. I can get away with a little bit, but too much and my stomach ties itself in knots!

  10. October 9, 2009 3:07 pm

Ooooh yes. I was really sick for a while and the doctors gave me a list of foods I had to avoid. Let me preface this by saying that none of the doctors knew exactly what was wrong with me–just that I had some crazy stomach illness. That said, I didn’t listen and often purposely ate the foods on the list just to test their illness “theories.” Yea, wasn’t EVER a good idea ;)

  11. October 9, 2009 3:19 pm

I “accidentally” inhaled about half a box of Annie’s Whole Wheat Bunny Crackers and felt like complete crap afterwards. I then read that they contained traces of cheddar cheese.. it was the first time I didnt study the ingredient list and it surely came back to bite me!!

  12. October 9, 2009 3:27 pm

Aww poor puppy! Hope she feels better soon!

My dog Jack doesn’t really eat ‘live’ food but he will eat ANYTHING. In the last compound that we lived in all the gardeners were from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. They loved Jack and he loved them….because they would give him their bowls of leftover fish curry, chicken biryani and hot pepper dahl, which he would often devour before we could stop him. Ughghg. That food definitely did NOT like Jack!!!

Luckily I have a stomach of steel and I’ve never eaten anything that hasn’t set right with me. But whenever I decide to indulge in anything that contains white sugar, I definitely feel gross/sluggish/tired later!

Those kale chips look yummy! Are we still on for the swap? My cookies for your kale? ;-)

    Poor Molly. :(

I think cake tends to come back to bite me, especially if it’s not high quality (ie from a box). And yet it’s an evil cycle because I find myself wanting it sometimes just BECAUSE it’s so evil. Hate that! Give me a quality carrot cake any day, but don’t let me overdo it. I am not a good mother to a food baby. I’m always glad to find vegan equivalents (even tho I’m not vegan) with cleaner ingredients because they don’t tend to upset my belly the same way as processed stuff. Durrrrr.

    awwww…poor molly!!

id love to say i have never eaten anything knowing it would come back to bite me, but lets be real…i have been lactose intolerant for 10 years, and the first few were rough ones – i may have been in denial for a while (if you catch my drift).

  15. October 9, 2009 4:18 pm

Hope Molly is ok! Before I knew I suffered from multiple food allergies I would eat many things that would make be sick! :( So fun! Nowadays I am starting to learn what works for my body and what does not. So hopefully I will not have to worry about feeling blah or gassy anymore! And just enjoy life to the fullest (with a happy tummy).

  16. October 9, 2009 4:53 pm

Oh now! Poor Molly! That sounds awful.

As for raw kale chips, more power to you! I’ve tried and tried and I just can’t convince myself to like raw greens (except for lettuce!).

Most every weekend, I go out with friends, have a few (too many) drinks and end up pigging out on nachos or greasy hash browns or a full bag of BBQ chips … knowing full well that I’ll have a hangover and a bellyache the next day….you think I’d learn by now. But it always seems SO right at the time!

  17. October 9, 2009 4:59 pm

You should totally make your own ketchup. It’s better than Westbrae!! I can hook you up with a recipe :)

Still trying the gaining weight thing and my uncomfortable food is cheese. Don’t get me started on what it does to my poor tummy! But I love it so much :( That and ice cream.

  19. October 9, 2009 5:09 pm

Too funny. I am glad she is ok now. My dog will do things like that. It is a concern where we are since the flies carry maggots and someone told us their dog ate a fly and hatched maggots. Who know if it is true, but it is a scary and disgusting thought either way!

As for me, after I had my gall bladder out I needed to gain weight, and then easiest way is by adding fat, but the trouble is with a gall bladder fat malabsorption is highly likely. But I kept giving it a try and it was so not the right thing to do. I mean I am a dietitian and I know better but I kept getting pressure even from my coworkers to keep eating.

happy Friday!! ohhh noo I can’t believe she ate ants!! My big doggie, Shadow, used to try to eat bees that were flying around the backyard. They’re so silly sometimes. But so are we. I tried to eat some of Cheddar’s dog food this morning actually and it made me feel a little sick. I should probably explain that – I make homemade dog food for him and I was testing out a new recipe haha. I don’t actually eat kibble for fun.
By the way – those kale chips look good but what are raw kale chips exactly…are they just kale leaves or am I missing something that makes them chip-esque? ;)

I once ate red ants too – Juuuust kidding! But I empathize with poor Molly. I bet you she experienced something unlike what any of us have experienced in terms of food that bites back. Hm.. certain dairy products really bite me. For instance, my friend made homemade ice cream once and I got sick instantly. Eggs don’t sit well with me either.. I get indigestion for a couple of days. Another thing that doesn’t sit well with me is super greasy foods. I was in this Thai restaurant once and ordered their tofu with peanut sauce and it was swimming in grease and I ate it, then I will spare you the details of what happened afterwards. Let’s just say I never went back there again.. it frightens me!

I’ve tried raw collard greens (delicious) but I don’t think I’ve tried raw kale.

  22. October 9, 2009 5:59 pm

Awww, poor Molly! I hope she feels better now!

When I go to restaurants, and I’m loving the food there, I can’t stop eating (too good to stop). I know that I’ll get a stomach ache later, but in my case, it’s worth it =P

  23. October 9, 2009 6:07 pm

Oh my, those ants sound mean! Hope Molly is fine.

  24. October 9, 2009 7:11 pm

if i eat something way too sweet but its just so good that i dont want to stop, i always feel nauseas afterwards!! same goes for carbed up meals which is a rare occurance

LOVE the kale chips i made them for the first time a few weeks back and they were great! i did cook them in the oven, so i guess it wasnt 100% raw but still they were healthy and great!

  25. October 9, 2009 7:15 pm

    Poor Molly – I hope she’s okay.

Kale – I only like it in roasted chip form. Wished I liked it raw, but it’s about right up with frisee. Blech. I still can’t believe you can buy packages of just frisee. Why?????

As far as eating something that bites back…there was that whole head of cauliflower incident. I didn’t think I’d ever want to eat again. ;)

Aww poor Molly! Kale chips sound yummy; do you have a recipe for them?

  28. October 9, 2009 8:33 pm

I just ate an entire container of hummus…and while it was delicious, I was SO full afterwards. But I just couldn’t help myself!

This is SO embarrassing. But, every time used to eat pizza at a party, it would give me terrible gas. Haha!

  30. October 10, 2009 1:56 am

Poor Molly! Hope she’s okay now. My major weakness is chocolate. . . I’ve often eaten more than I could chew (so I let it melt in my mouth instead!) ;)

  31. October 10, 2009 2:19 am

Poor Molly! That’s horrible!! :( Kale chips sound neat!!

I don’t eat out often because home meals are SO much less expensive. But, when I do eat dinner out, I am often left feeling thirsty due to all the sodium in restaurant food. I also feel bloated due to the ingredients that my body is not used to. I used to think it was worth it but now …not so much ;)

  33. October 10, 2009 9:16 am

Your food looks much nicer than Molly’s sounds! Poor Molly! I hope she’s doing okay!

  34. October 10, 2009 12:57 pm

Poor Molly, I hope she starts to feel better. I hate when I eat greasy pizza or fries, I always feel gross afterward.

  35. October 10, 2009 1:40 pm

Any spicy foods come back to haunt me!!! :-S eek!

  36. October 10, 2009 11:11 pm

Aww, poor Molly! I hope she’s feeling better and that all the ants have been… er… expelled! :)

  37. October 11, 2009 3:02 pm

:( I hope Molly is feeling better!

  38. October 12, 2009 1:34 am

I have a lot of friends who eat food so spicy that they can’t even get out of the restaurant before they have to … erm … make a trip to the restroom. I love spicy food, but if it tore up my stomach the way it does theirs, I don’t think I’d eat so much!

  39. October 15, 2009 6:48 pm

Yes, there are foods I’d like to become friends with them: ice cream, coffee with milk, risotto, lately some vegetables. They don’t make me feel too well. Love the fudge balls idea!

  40. October 18, 2009 4:02 am

Fish & chips! They taste so good, but they cause havoc later – I’ll spare you the details ;)
