Am I becoming a Raw Foodist?

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on November 17, 2009

I received the following email yesterday:

Hi Katie, I’m a reader and a new vegan.  I know you’ve been a vegan for a while, but it seems like lately a lot of your recipes are raw recipes, so I was wondering: with all the current raw foodism hype, are you cutting back on cooked foods or planning to become a raw foodist? I’m just curious, not trying to pry! I’m definitely going to try your Raw Macaroon recipe soon!

.

Answer: Nope, I definitely have no intention of becoming a raw foodist.  Despite the plethora of raw recipes on my blog lately (*cough cough* fudge babies), much of my diet is made up of cooked foods.

.

But to go with the growing Raw Food trend, I’ve added a new section under the chocolate-covered recipes tab:

Totally Raw-some!

(Click on the above link for a list of all the raw recipes on my blog, including Macaroons, Mounds bars, and Banana Butter)

.

Chocolate-Covered Cooked Meal of the Day

 znyc 297

Roasted kabocha, bulgur pilaf, and a portabella-zucchini-spinach-chard Stir Fry Salad

(I’ve been loving the portabellas lately.  They’re so meaty and fun to eat!)

.

.

Not that it would be difficult if I did decide to become a raw foodist.

I’d just eat Cookie Dough Babies all day.

An all-raw diet doesn’t sound so intimidating when little balls of chocolate-chip cookie dough are involved, now does it? ;)

Is there a raw food or recipe that you could (or do!) eat every day?

Great response to a great question. I could see how someone might think that. Someone can easily enjoy raw foods without being a raw vegan, just the same as someone can enjoy a vegetarian meal without being a vegetarian.

I love raw but I also do cooked when I want it. No rules, just whatever my body needs. But you probably already knew that :)

I’m all for a healthy mix of cooked and raw foods. At this point in my life, I don’t think I’d even wanna do all raw, all the time. But you’re right about the Fudge Babies … they do make raw eatin’ seem even more appealing.

Jessica November 17, 2009 at 5:07 pm

I already eat fudge babies (or one of their many variations) every day, lol. My other choice is pretty lame, lol, but I adore raw carrots! I probably eat 3 a day, and I’m talking the big ones!

I feel the same way as you do about raw foods: I love them and they are delicious and they do make up a large portion of my meals, but not on purpose, just because they are tasty and make me feel great! But I adore my cooked dishes too, and I have no intention of ever going completely raw.

And YES, there is one raw dish that totally and completely owns my soul, I could eat it morning noon and night, in fact, I’ve blogged about it again today: Kristen’s Raw Tuscan Sun Dried Tomato Pesto Dip. It is quite honestly the best dip I have ever eaten in my life. It deserves its own fan club. I’ll be the president!

I hear ya, raw’s great, but so is cooked and I find I eat a variety of both without really thinking about it. Just like you can’t live without your stir fry salads, I can’t live without my roasted salads!

By the way, I’m so swamped with work right now but I just wanted to send you ((hugs)) in response to your “not-happy” post. I’m so appalled that there are such mean-spirited commenters out there and hope they never show their ugly words here again.

Yaaay for more fudge babies!!! I don’t think I’ve seen many cc meals without kabocha these days ;) I don’t blame you, Katie!

Jess November 17, 2009 at 8:08 pm

Can you make fudge babies with a blender? It’s all I have!

Also …. I tend to eat raw maybe 50% without thinking about it. Smoothies at breaky and salads at lunch . . . I love raw fruit. Three out of four seasons I eat pineapple everyday.

I don’t think my body would be too happy if I made it go 100% raw. It’s too fond of sweet potato fries, veggie stir-fries, brownies and scones! :-)

Something raw I could eat every day? Strawberries! Plain, fresh strawberries! *drool*

I love the “totally RAW-some” tag. :)

I am not a raw foodist or a vegan or even a vegetarian, but I could snack away all day on raw celery, carrots, pea pods, broccoli, peppers, and most fruits and eat lots of salads. Do pistachios count too? Nummy.

I just gotta have my meat too.

HMM I don’t know! I’m not a raw foodie at all I like my veggies cooked even!

Although the dough babies look good enough to live off of!

mmmmm I’m all about the raw food! My understanding (as I thought about going 100% raw at one point) is that it’s not the healthiest to go 100% because one’s body really does need some cooked foods, especially in the winter time! And, in my opinion, some things just *taste* better cooked :)
Buuuut… I *do* have a particular hankering for raw nut-cheeses, raw pesto, guacamole, the slew of fruits&veggies, and of course, raw FUDGE BABIES !! (so good call!)

Hi, Katie!
I love reading your posts all the time and I am a healthy-life wanna-be (lol)
I can eat healthy breakfast and dinners, but since I am just a secondary school student, lunch seems to be hard for me. Although most of the time I pack lunch, I don’t want to pack tuna salad everyday because I don’t want other people to think mean things like “that bitch eats nothing but salad” or “well, she’s skinny-so she’s annorexic” or anything. Do you have any suggestions for a healthy school-affordable lunches?
Thanks, Stephanie

and to the comment above,
I do not think Katie is eating less or anything like that at all. Some people as you said, say they are not annorexic but eat like tiny tiny amounts. But if you looked at Katie’s meals..you notice some of those foods are quite high in calories. for instance, peanut butter…walnuts and those Larabars are quite high in calorie as well.
I just don’t understand you…;;

I would eat those chocolate chip babies all day long too! But right now, I’ll stick with my cooked foods. Keeps me warm in this rapidly dropping climate! :(

I’m so intrigued with the raw lifestyle, but don’t think it’s for me. I wish! I did a “raw wednesday” challenge last month, and I was always hungry on wednesdays when I had my raw food. I think having your cookie dough babies around would have helped tremendously… :-)

I’m just getting more comfortable with raw foods(because of health issues). I could eat the low-sugar version(on DietDessert and Dogs blog) of Fudge babies everyday!! I would LOVE your babies more, but the sugar is a no-no for me. I do still eat some cooked though. I have been loving spaghetti squash lately:)
