Flat as a (chocolate) Pancake

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on November 22, 2009

For the past few years, my favorite thing about Thanksgiving hasn’t been the pumpkin pie, and it hasn’t been the turkey (duh).  No, it’s the fact that my whole family gets to be together, even my little sister, whom I hardly get to see anymore.

To celebrate our reunion, I offered to make a special breakfast for everyone.  But what to make?  Dad really loves bacon.  Little sister isn’t too keen on oatmeal.  Mom fears tofu.

Hmmm…

But when Kelly reminded me about Brownie Batter Pancakes, the choice was clear.

Time to make some pancakes.

Brownie Batter Pancakes, that is :)

Brownies for breakfast! Yay! :)

(Kelly’s look better than mine.  Photography lesson, please, Kelly?)

Guess who got to lick the batter bowl:

(No, it wasn’t Henry.)

It was just like old Pancake Sundays.

Do you all miss your families now that you’re grown up?  Do you ever find yourselves reminiscing and wishing you were a little kid again, with a daddy to make you pancakes, a mommy to tuck you in at night, and a sister to steal your clothes?

what a sweet daughter and sister you are to make breakie for the whole fam! I missed my family so so so much when I lived by myself. But now that I moved back home…we annoy the hecckk out of each other. I’m an only child so I have no one on my side (kids vs parents) except the dogs!

I always find myself reminiscing when i am at my parent’s house for the holidays! We still manage to fall into a similar routine when we are there and it is so nice and relaxing just to be with the people who know you best and love you unconditionally.

I don’t think I miss my family as much as others might. I still talk to everyone pretty often. ^^;;

I’m a sophomore at college, and I live with one of my (three) older brothers (and his girlfriend) at a house they bought this year (last year we lived at an apartment) so needless to say I don’t miss him. =P My other two brothers go to the same college and live together, too, and go home nearly every weekend so my mom gets to see them a lot. My sister just turned twelve this month so she still lives at home with my parents. I don’t drive home every weekend like my other brothers do (home is nearly four hours away for me, about an hour for them), but my mom calls or e-mails me nearly every day and I’ll ask to talk to my dad and my sister, too. The two brothers I don’t live with call me or I’ll call them occasionally, also. I guess I do miss actually hanging out with the rest of my family, though. If they call me and they’re all going to Target or something I’ll instantly feel like I’m missing out on something ’cause they sound like they’re having a blast and I’m stuck here with a brother who only wants to sit on the computer and play World of Warcraft all day. ._.; Bleck.

I do miss being a kid, sometimes. Mainly I miss not having a lot of papers to write and tests to study for. :/ And I still steal my little sister’s clothes all the time! Haha. I feel like whenever I do go home to see my family I always ask to (or I guess I just tell her that I am =P) borrow something. It goes the other way too, though. She likes to wear things of mine so I tend to give her a lot of the clothes I don’t wear anymore. It’s kind of sad maybe that I borrow a 12 year old’s clothes, but none of my friends are as small as I am and they’re also about four inches taller. :/

Eek. Didn’t mean to write you a novel, haha.
The pancakes look yummy. =] I need to figure out what I’ll be contributing to my family’s Thanksgiving. Maybe I’ll suggest foregoing dinner type foods and make it a breakfast type deal. ;P

I really do miss the good ol’ days..even though it wasn’t that long ago. I think of all these memories and love laughing at the things I did and said. Now we don’t even have family over for thanksgiving. But I’m thankful for what I have and who is here with me now.

AMAZING breakfast! Those are def. on my to-make list. I think I may make pumpkin pancakes for thanksgiving!

Yum–brownies for breakfast always sound like a good idea to me ;)

And in our house, it was my sisters and I who made the pancakes!

Katie, you’re such a sweetheart! Those brownie batter pancakes look so awesome! They look so chocolaty – YUM!!

p.s. Matilda wants to meet Henry and Molly ASAP!

p.s.s. I agree about New York! I LOVE specialty stores.

Aw, thanks for the shout-out, Miss Katie! Your pancakes look just delicious and I bet your family loved ‘em.

I do miss childhood days of yore sometimes, especially now that my “little” bro and sis are off at college! It’s going to be a huge change when I move to Wisconsin, too – my parents will have a truly empty nest for the first time ever, and I’ll be sad that life in the working world means I can’t go home for holidays or college breaks. Sigh!

Yum yum chocolate for breakfast could lead to a slippery slope for me though ;)

Darn I didn’t win I swear I am never going to win a giveaway!

I also love the family time too although sometimes it’s overwhelming! Since as a vegan food holds little fun for me on Turkey Day ;)

Have a great week Sister!

Awww cute family pic. This will be my first thanksgiving where I won’t be with my parents and siblings, but if we were together i’d make brownie batter pancakes.

You know your Brownie Batter pancakes are some of the best pancake I’ve ever made. Should have gone with your recipe this morning!

Love my family. Thankfully, my parents and younger brother are in Nashville, and I get to see them often. My older brother isn’t too far away, and he tries to come to town whenever he can. However, I do miss those Sunday mornings back at home when my dad would make us all a huge breakfast. Fun time for sure.

Your family looks so happy. Enjoy your week with them Katie!

Oooh I totally miss childhood things like pancakes in the morning. That IS definitely the reason I like holidays so much – all that family time and yummy food rolled into a day. Glad you got to re-live it over a chocolaty breakfast this morning. :-)

What a lovely family sentiment :) Now that I have a child of my own, I actually remember parts of my childhood that I would have never remembered. It’s like a 25 yr old memory becomes un-earthed by seeing my daughter eat a Heath Bar for Halloween. Or watching her talk to her dolls in a certain way it reminds me of me when I was little. Life is such a cycle…yes I do miss being taken care of, but now I have the most imp job in the world: taking care of Skylar.

And I think my A. Grass powder is gonna get put to good use w/ the pancakes soon…

It’s been far too long since I last made pancakes! Maybe I’ll put that on my agenda for Thanksgiving morning:)
My roommate and I were just reminiscing the other day how we wish were in about 5th grade again–when we thought we were SO cool, but still got tucked in at night…

I’m lucky that I live with my sister – so I basically see her daily. I also see my parents at least 1x a week because they live really close by. Love it.

Great pancakes! That’s the cleanest pancake batter bowl I have ever seen! We had pancakes for breakfast on Sunday too!

I still see my family every week so I don’t miss them. We all live within walking distance of each other. I couldn’t imagine one moving away and hardly ever seeing them.

I wish my sister would whip up a batch of those for breakfast. I <3 chocolate first thing in the morning!

I miss my family all the time becuase we're so spread out. I wish I could be with them all for Thanksgiving, but it's just me and Lucas this year!

Speaking of family, my Mom would seriously die over those pancakes. She needs chocolate in everything. I’ll have to cook some up for her!

I miss my family all together sometimes. On Christmas morning it’s just me with my parents now that my brother’s married. It’s weird!

I am so the opposite – adult here, moved back home, whole family is ALWAYS here. I could stand to miss them from time to time, if ya know what I mean ;)
