White Foods Are Bad For You

Did you know there’s such a thing as the “No white foods” diet?

Scarily enough, it’s true!  The real idea behind the diet is to cut out white, processed/starchy foods (i.e. white flour).  But apparently, followers are told to stay away from all white foods so they don’t get confused as to what’s acceptable and what’s not. Well count me out (not that I was looking for a diet plan anyway). Imagine a life without coconut, almond milk, tofu, coconut, coconut, cauliflower, coconut … did I say coconut yet? 😉 Yay for white!

Good things that are white

Exhibit B: Snow in Dallas

Wait a sec.  Everyone knows it doesn’t snow in Dallas, does it? Why yes, yes it does! And when this happens, everything is a mess! Driving is impossible because the native Texans don’t know how to drive in snow, and they therefore go two miles per hour (even if it’s only flurries). Plus, no one owns rock salt or snowmobiles, which means the roads don’t get paved. What would be no big deal in, say, Minnesota, is a very big deal in Big D.

Question of the day:

Why do so many people think Edward Cullen, with his ghostly white face and devil red eyes, is insanely hot? What are your favorite white foods?

That is soooo funny…you have to be pretty out of it to confuse cauliflower with wonder bread. lol

that’s how pale I am! you should see me without makeup..its scary.

cauliflower, daikon radishes, cashews, coconut…all good white things mm mm

  2. Danielle says

i’m not sure what you would classify oatmeal as…maybe tan-ish, or quinoa, or bananas (white on the inside!)…but a life without white would be tragic

  3. tangerinesandmarmalade says

That diet sounds so silly! Avoid ALL white foods so you won’t get “confused”? Whaddup with that?
I love fage and almond milk, and on the rare occasion, a warm piece of sourdough bread, straight outta the oven!

  4. candice says

What an obscure diet. o_o I think I would nuts without white in my diet! Balance, people, balance. Love my almond milk, vanilla ice cream, goat cheese, cauliflower… who dares call cauliflower unhealthy?

  5. Michal says

I love bananas, one you peel them of course!

I think a lot of people really like edwards character, not really him. His personality makes him hot… does that even make sense? Ill take jacob any day though 😉

  6. Stephanie says

I love all things coconut, vanilla rice milk, and silken tofu for my chocolate mousse (perfect when you have a serious chocolate craving!). Did I mention coconut? Oh yes, you did too! 😉

  7. Emily says

I’ve been trying to think of all the foods I couldn’t have if I was on this diet… cashews (cashew ice cream!), oats (white ish!), quinoa flakes, beansprouts, cauliflower, kolrabi, parsnips, Asian pears, tofu, soy milk (but not chocolate soy milk 😉 ), soy yogurt, ground almonds, macadamia nuts, pine nuts, raw tahini, hemp hearts, white chia seeds, celeriac, pak choi, turnip, canellini, haricot and butterbeans, amazake, rice protein powder, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, salt, ok I’m getting a little over the top now but… nooo! However… may if one were to buy a giant sized bottle of food colouring!!!! Where would you get your calcium from for goodness sake?!

  8. Maria says

I believe that unhealthy white foods is ok in moderation, and you did ask for one of my favorites, which is European style crusty bread. Yuuum! I also love coconut, cauliflower, tofu, soy milk, Asian radishes, and napa cabbage (it can be mostly white). Could you send me some of Exhibit E? 😉 I reaally need to try that recipe topped with melty coconut buttah!

  9. Cassie says

he’s not pale, he’s glow-in-the-dark! but i love him anyways! my favorite white food? probably cauliflower. it’s so yummy raw or cooked 🙂

  10. Jenny says

psh, me stay away from my beloved vanilla greek yogurt? never. Those people are nuts! (obviously not COCOnuts though.. god forbid!) oh diet fads, you are so dumb.

  11. Abby says

Almond milk is white, right? So yeah, that and tofu AND potatoes (I love sweet taters but sometimes roasted russets are even better!!!). I could go on and on, Katie.. lol 🙂

  12. lz says

Katie, thank you for this playful post which lifted my spirits just when I needed a boost. Indeed, toilets count as a good thing that is white. My favorite white food would have to be the potato… so versatile; I especially enjoy it in soups–so warm and hearty!

  13. healthy & homemade says

WOW that is a diet for the *truly* helpless/stupid people.

I LOVE me some tofu (thinking of having a scramble for brekkie!!), yogurt, coconut, pizza dough, french bread (I don’t care if it’s not “healthy”) =P etc etc! There is too much good stuff out there to ignore!!

Also, I think Rdizzle in real life isn’t all that appealing because he looks like he hasn’t eaten/showered in a few days. I think in the movies he’s super cute, and his character is really what makes people love him. I really think the books were written for girls to fall in love with Edward & Jacob, so naturally any mildly adorable actors playing those rolls will make girls fall in love with them as well 😉

Oh PS, Team Edward! (yes, that just happened. Also, Taylor is 17 and I’m not a cougar).

  14. Nicole, MS, RD, LD says

What a cute post…which I agree with 100%! Coconut is a favorite food…I eat low-fat coconut flakes in my granola! Yumm! I also love canola oil mayo light on a turkey sandwich, and vanilla bean ice cream! I also love MILK! Tofu! French bread! Pasta! Rice! Alfredo! Mmmm!!!

  15. anon says

    pop corn
    full fat mayo
    potatoes
    milk (all kinds)
    vanilla ice cream
    yogurt
    bread
    rice
    fish
    some parts of a chicken
    the inside of an apple
    the inside of a banana
    flour (to bake)
    egg whites
    cream cheese
    mozarella cheese
    all kinds of cheese
    chirimoya ( a fruit)
    cauliflower
    onions
    corn (there’s a type that’s white)
    salt
    sugar
    sour cream
    white chocolate
    palmito hearts
etc etc etc… i think all my favorite foods are white

  16. Carbzilla says

Did I already tell you that People magazine had some little blurb that there was a RUMOR that Jennifer Aniston was trying some new RADICAL diet where she gave up white flour and sugar, but that her PR person was quick to deny it? You would have thought she’d taken up daily champagne colonics and only eating metal wingnuts for a month! I could not believe it. This country is scr*wed up – pardon my French!

  17. Sarah A says

Who in their right mind would give these up?

Tofu, non-dairy milk, barley with its hull, apple rings, parsnips, popcorn, cauliflower, mushrooms, grits (introduced to our family by my Mississippi-born Dad), sea salt, lots of vinegars, white chocolate, pears, the inside of zucchini, squash, and eggplant, and of course coconut!

  18. Vanilla says

    Hum…

    1) Thick crust of a pizza (just made a post about pizza, so now I’m craving that thick crust xD) and with nice stringy cheese that streched while you bite into a warm pizza 🙂
    2) Coconut
    3) Yogurt
    4) Soymilk

p.s: I blogged about a the melted banana and suggested a Melted banana religion…what do ya think? 😉

    xoxo

  19. Lo says

Miss Katie. I would die without yogurt, popcorn, egg whites, artichokes (white?), onions, vegan butter to top on my white bagels, almond milk, cheese pizza, truvia sweetener … Ok I can’t think of more white foods lol. But these are so not bad. 🙂

    Xoxo

  20. Kristen @ Simply Savor says

i totally agree about the edward comment! im team JACOB all the way. pale skin+red eyes just don’t do it for me 😉 although i do see his appeal in the book version. that raw coconut creme pie looks amazing, putting under my ‘to make’ recipe list! hope you’re having a great weekend girl!

  21. Shelby says

White foods are so good! A life without coconut is no life at all!

I totally agree with you on Edward Cullen. Bleh, not hot!

  22. Mona says

greek yogurt!!! I eat it every day. And cauliflower…hmmmm I am trying to think of some more white foods.

I love going to vegan restaurants and I found one in portland that serves both raw and cooked vegan food. They have raw pesto spaghetti which is to die for!
I took my friend alex there because they have cooked options too so it wouldn’t be to scary for him…he’s pretty picky when it comes to food oh and did I mention he eats meat?

He unfortunately didn’t order anything raw 🙁 but he liked his food!

That coconut cream pie looks great! Funny post today!

  23. Brandi C. says

Cottage Cheese, Onions, Garlic, Coconut, Almond Milk, Tofu, Mushrooms, Cauliflour, Yogurt, White asparagus, Chicken, Fish, and Turkey

  24. fartygirl says

I used to be on a white foods diet. Anything that wasn’t starchy or processed freaked me out. That’s when I was a kid. Parents didn’t fight me on it. Today, I have IBS.

Parents, learn from my story. Make your children eat their veggies!

Is coconut butter sweet? Is it more like coconut shavings or coconut milk?

Btw. About Ed Cullen… I’d rather do Harry Potter any day.

  25. Cinnamon Feind says

Hm…some of my fave white foods are califlour (sp?), parsnips, COCONUT meat, milk, oil, butter… definately, the concept of white and “vanilla” even though vanilla beans are technically blackish brownish…umm and cashews! though they’re more of a tan color.

    Have a great sunday!

  26. Emily says

Life would certainly be sad without coconut. 🙁
I think girls are attracted to Cullen not only because they are blinded by his whiteness but also because he is totally unrealistically romantic (ok, so maybe i’m a bit of a cynic). 🙂

  27. Kris | iheartwellness.com says

hahah you are so cute!! I do eat white food like coconut etc, but I do not touch white bread, rice, potatoes etc. Don’t know why I stopped when I was younger because I heard it was bad for you skin and it really shoots your insulin up.

Everything coconut is divine….i am drooling over these muffins!! Ahhhh why is my tooth so sweet?

    Much Love!

    XXOO

  28. Ricki says

Wow, I have never heard that take on the “no white” diet before–and I am a follower of it! I prefer to eat whole grains and natural sweeteners because there’s no nutritional value left in the white sugar or flour, but of course things like coconut, cauliflower, etc. are yummy, healthy foods! But even refined foods are okay once in a while–they do tend to taste yummy. 😉

  29. Jess of Veg Out! says

Hahahaha to your crossed out question. I’m with ya!! I’ve been told that you have to see “Twilight” to “get it” (which I haven’t), but whatever. Not interested. 😉

I LOVE coconut, too. And cauliflower. And tofu. And cashew, almond, Brazil nut, and hemp milk. I couldn’t live without these white (and healthy) foods!

  30. Jess says

    HA

Potatoes. non-dairy rice pudding (the only thing I find acceptable to use white rice in rather than brown, though, um, I would use brown). apples and pears and bananas. white beans. non-dairy milk! (I NEVER used dairy milk for anything before and now it’s one of my favorite “foods”). garlic. white onions.

but refined white food? yah, we can leave that.

  31. Clay says

Banana to the power of 7! Rice pudding, vanilla fro-yo, frosted cheerios, the inside of the apple, onions, potatos, white choc and cashew nuts.

I think any diet that says ‘no’ to anything is not one that should be strcitly followed… i dont care if Oprah does endorse it.

  32. Pure2Raw says

That is scary that there is a diet out there telling people not to eat white foods. Actually it makes me laugh!!! And that people actually listen to it… I mean as you and others have mentioned there are plenty of healthy white foods out there to consume!!! Coconut being my top favorite followed by tahini!!! The options are endless…. and sorry we are team Edward. But Jacob is not bad.

  33. Katharina says

All those foods you listed.. I could not live without. I can’t believe it snowed in Dallas! The weather is getting crazier and crazier. But you know what? Those 24-carrot cupcakes with the coconut butter look insanely delicious. Oh my gosh. Take care girlie! I hope you enjoyed the snow 😀

  34. Katie says

I agree that any diet that completely resitricts one food is bound to fail. Alas, crazy diets abound; the cauliflower diet, master cleanse, etc. I personally love my silken tofu, cauliflower, and coconut milk is about as white as you can get! It practically glows.

  35. jqlee says

oh and yogurt too. could not live w/o yogurt.

    oh and cottage cheese.

wow, the list goes on and on. how can someone really NOT eat white foods? that’s just silly.

  36. CaSaundra says

I am not a fan of Twilight at all–it is making me SO annoyed to put it nicely. :-@

I could never ever ever do a no-white diet—no potatoes?! no canelinni beans?! no thanks! 🙂

  37. Cindy says

I love your take on this…and yes…coconuts are my most adored food on the planet!

yes, if that was part of the white is bad…I would simply be bad.

I can’t seem to find your how to on your raw coconut cream pie…do you have a recipe…it looks DIVINE!

  38. michelle says

OMG, Katie…finally someone agrees w/ me! Edward Cullen/guy that plays Edward Cullen has a giant head and is one of the creepiest dudes I’ve seen!! Definitely NOT hot!

  39. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) says

Life without coconut ain’t worth livin. Truth.

I can’t say that looking at Edward Cullen doesn’t make me a little uncomfortable. I dunno, there’s something about the way he’s all made up so white that kinda freaks me out. Plus his character is awkward. Still, I CAN say that I kinda think RPattz is kinda hot. 😉

  40. Jo says

I should know better and usually I look down in distain from my high horse as such juvenile behaviour – but I LOVE EDWARD CULLEN!! Its my guilty secret. Yes, I have sunk that low, I am teeny bopper obsessed “Twihard” or whatever ridiculous name they have.

(Ok before anyone gets too overexcited about this – I don’t really love him, what I am attracted to is an idealised version of a person in my mind… blah, blah, blah… but hey, a girl can dream!)

The white food diet cracks me up – like I would look at a bowl of ice-cream and then a cauliflower but be confused as to which was healthy and which wasn’t. Having said that there are people in the UK which think a packet of fruit pastilles constitutes one of your five a day (don’t know if you get fruit pastilles in the US but they are sugary chewy fruit FLAVOURED sweeties!)

  41. Christina says

I do not understand why they think Edward Cullen is hot either! I think he’s quite goofy looking actually.

My favorite white food would have to be white rice from a American-Chinese food place. Occasionally I’ll buy a pint as a treat!

  42. Jennifer says

i love all white food, even the “bad carby” stuff. i love E.C. from the books, but Rob Pat will always be Cedric from Harry Potter, never Edward.
