Peppers are red, Cookie Monster is blue…

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on January 25, 2010

I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have friends like all of you! :)

I feel so much better now, after my confession in yesterday’s post.

But oh my goodness, y’all were so understanding with your responses that it makes me feel even more guilty for not visiting every single one of your blogs and telling you personally how AWESOME-LICIOUS you are, which is what you deserve to hear from me (and from everyone else in your lives)!  The outpouring of encouragement was just unreal!

Every time I’m nervous about publishing a more-personal post than just food or recipes, you all shower me with kindness, letting me know that all my worries about being judged are utterly ridiculous!  So thank you, thank you, thank you all.

I wish I had the time to thank every one of you individually, like you deserve.

But even though I don’t, please know that I thoroughly read each wonderful comment and email and they just made me the happiest chocolate-covered girl in the world (and beyond).

You all are too wonderful; how did I get so lucky as to know all of you???

Side note: It’s pretty obvious that I need to stop worrying so much about silly things.  Thanks to those of you who called me out on that!

/

.

Chocolate-Covered Meal of the Day:

I *heart* red cabbage.  But why do they call it red?  Looks purple to me :-?

 znyc 882

A banana loafs around, top-left.  Then we have a deelishie stir fry over my favoritest spaghetti.

Ummm CCV, but where’s the spaghetti???

.

Oh, here it is!  Hiding out under the warm stir-fry blanket.

znyc 883

Don’t write whole-wheat pasta off until you try this one!

.

In other food news, I was really glad to hear that a lot of you like the “Shout-Out of the Day” part of my blog.  Honestly, there are tons of blogs out there that deserve recognition, so doing these mini-tribute/highlights on my blog helps get the word out about these gems.  Obviously there’s no way I can highlight all the blogs worthy of a shout-out… but I can keep plugging away, eventually getting around to as many as possible!

.

In today’s Spotlight:

Mae, and her delectably chocolatey, swamp-tastic Chocolate Mudslide Oatmeal

mud_thumb18

She and I both discovered that it really kicks up the flavor if you add a little instant coffee powder (like Mount Hagan brand)

to the Chocolate Mudslide Oatmeal.

.

.

Ok, enough from me for now.  It is absolutely gorgeous here, so I’m off for a run (actually, when this publishes, I’ll probably already be outside running, ‘cause most of my posts are “pre-scheduled”).  I’m so excited that Texas weather is finally living up to the stereotype that “it’s always warm” :) .  (It’s in the 30s, but it’s supposed to get up to 60 today.)

Question of the Day:

Are there stereotypes about the places you all live?  After living in Texas for a year, I went back to my old home in Pennsylvania and my Pennsylvanian friends wanted to know two things: “What do you do for fun, go to rodeos?  And do you get to wrestle rattlesnakes???”  LOL, no!  For fun, I go to the mall!  And if I saw a rattlesnake, I’d run as fast as I could in the opposite direction!!!

.

*Just to clarify, because some of you mentioned this: I definitely did not mean that I don’t want you to leave me comments telling me to check out your blog because you tried a CCV recipe.  Those posts never fail to put a smile on my face!!

We had a completely CCV weekend, Katie! I’ll send you an e-mail later. We made only your recipes ALL weekend! I even have a banana hammock in my lunch. Mmm…

I live in Canada, where there is no shortage of stereotypes. When I went to summer camp in America one year I was bombarded with so many silly questions: do you live in an igloo, do you have McDonald’s, is it always cold, do you own a dog sled, etc. The best part was that I played a little game and made up some really funny answers, most of which were untrue: my dad built the first two storey igloo in our village, the McDonald’s live on the other side of the village, it never stops snowing, and it took me two days by dog sled to get to the airport. Haha. Truthfully, Canada isn’t that much different from America or Europe – it gets cold in winter, warm in summer, we have malls, restaurants, airports, mass transit, etc. Sure, it’s different, but it’s very much the same too.

Ha, in Chicago, we’ve gotten to be known as the super corrupt city! So yeah, thats not a stereotype I personally like, but its kinda true.

I live in New Jersey, have you seen the Jersey Shore? Need i say more? Jersey stereotypes are the worst! Most people I know do NOT have “oi” in their vowel repertoire :)

Hahah they are some stereotypes here – Pittsburghese ‘yinzers’!

After being away from campus for a month and going back, I sort of saw every stereotype for Brown students and it was so funny! The artsy kids and “hipsters” definitely scare me now

I didn’t know it was called “red cabbage?” I’ve been calling it purple cabbage lol! Mae’s oatmeal looks sooooo good!

I (temporarily) live in the mountains but I think I’m far from the stereotype of “mountain girl” :)

Katie thank you so much for the shout out today!! That bowl of oats is beyond awesome- infact I had it again the other day (but I was 30 minutes late to work, so no picture!! ahha) I heart your recipe and you have to try it with Saratoga PB’s new flavor when it comes out in a few weeks!! It’s to die for.

I live in NY and everyone has the stereotype that New Yorkers are rude…

Too bad it’s true!!! haha (I try to be an exception to the rule but it doesn’t always work out. ;-) )
Thank you again, you’re the sweetest chocolate covered girl in the world!!

It’s true red cabbage looks rather purple. I made a soup with it yesterday and the whole recipe looks rather purple… I hope it will taste good. I still have 3/4 of the cabbage left, so I think I’ll try a stir-fry like you did. I assume it’s a yummy way to eat cabbage.

Haha, it’s funny that you mention those stereotypes as we’re talking about them in school at the moment. I thought they might not exist anymore (since school books are usually out of date) so it’s interesting to find out people still believe them.

I don’t know any stereotypes about the place I live in, maybe rather about living in a village (all people are farmers, we’re inpolite, not talkative etc. – um … sure …).

Oh, and I like your spaghetti dish. I just recently tried the combination of (whole wheat) pasta and red cabbage for the first time (spiced with a little cinnamon and thyme) – very delicious!

Too funny. I am Canadian…so when I think of Texas…I think heat…when I think of L.A. …I think of glamor and all that :)
I guess i might be stereotyping a bit myself :)

Hey Sweetie…I just read your post and your last one too (see I am catching up too) and you have to know each and every one of us gets to that point where our lives and our blogs have to be balanced. Its like when you start living off of credit to afford your life. Sooner or later you simply have to cut back in order to live well.

There has been enough blogger drop out, and cut backs for I THINK everyone to understand…and I agree with your feelings 100%

no worries. Keep just being the sweetheart that you are and it will all work out!

Hey Katie! Just read yesterday’s post. Don’t worry about not making it to everybody’s blogs. Nobody has time for that! I check blogs at work … as a virtual (and much healthier) “smoke break” when I need to get my mind off work and refuel for my creative juices. But not everyone has a desk job with an amazing amount of freedom to look at what I want online like I do. If it weren’t for that, I certainly wouldn’t have time to comment on nearly as many blogs. Don’t sweat it! We love you!

Of course, people think it’s always raining. It does rain quite a bit but, for example, it’s sunny and beautiful today. Tomorrow the high should be 58.

The truth about Seattle is what they say: if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes. It can turn on a dime here.

That’s probably why we own more sunglasses and umbrellas than most cities in America.

Where can I find some of that “red” cabbage?? Looks like something I could get into.

Colorado is known for being FREEZING, and while it sometimes is…it is a very sunny state. Almost never cloudy, and rarely do the temps fall below 30 during the day. People always ask “how do you handle the cold?!” when, for the most part, it isn’t really that cold. Nothing like the Nothern midwest and the east coast.

Reply

Susan January 25, 2010 at 8:06 pm

I actually think it would be really cool if you cold wrestle rattlesnakes (though I wouldn’t be suprised if you told us you could Katie!). But I know what you mean. Stereotypes are everywhereeeeee. I went to a certain prep school for high school, and every time I told someone where I went to school, they’d immediately label me in a not so nice way. And funnily, when I now tell people I’m from Pittsburgh, they think I’m “yinz” (burgh word) or “unclassy” haha! Geez peeps, make up yo minds!

Anyways, just wanted to let you know your colorful bowl made me smile : )

hi!
living in ireland i can say that the actual stereotype is sooo true!! not only are the irish mad bout their potatoes, they are super friendly, nosy, ALWAYS chat bout the weather and drink, well, quite an awful lot ;)
the cabbage turns its colour depending on the way you prepare it! when you cook it the “proper german way” its red :)

Reply

whydeprive January 25, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I LOVE red cabbage!! And I agree, its not red its totally purple. Same with red onions, its always bothered me!

As for stereotypes about where I live, there are LOADS. Im Canadian, so theres the whole “do you live in an igloo and drive a dog sled?” thing.
Then theres my city – I actually LIE about my city because it has such a bad reputation. I usually just say Im from Vancouver – which Im not. But as soon as people hear where Im from they assume I live in a crack house. ONE bad area ruins it for the whole city!!

G’day mate – I’m from Australia, so obviously, we ride kangaroos to work, wrestle crocodiles on the weekend and look like tanned, blonde beach babes because we spend all our spare time at Bondi beach. And we always “chuck shrimps on the barbie for dinner”. *ahem* I must be so un-Australian – a small, brunette vegetarian who prefers running to crocodile wrestling and prefers to throw a veggie kebab on the barbie instead and likes the beach in winter when it’s deserted and I can go for long runs on it!
Actually, today is Australia Day and would you believe that they have been running an ad campaign over the last few weeks with some football player telling everyone that it’s “un-Australian” not to eat lamb on Australia Day!

PS – red cabbage is simply amazing if you briefly stir-fry it (so that it stays a bit crunchy) with some pecan nuts, apple slices and a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon.

I’m not too far from you (in Austin), so pretty much people from out of state think I wear cowboy hats and listen to country and drive a truck because I live in Texas. Honestly, its more stereotypical here to run marathons and ride bikes and drive a prius (all of which I do). And being a hipster music nerd I guess? :)

My blog keep-uppage depends on how busy I am – I try to hit people on my list up once a week at least or if things are slow at work, more (I have a very *hurry up and wait* job). I never am offended if people don’t visit my blog, but I do love comments!

And I loooooove me some stir fry. I almost decided to make it tonight and now I’m wishing I had…poo.

I think some varieties are more red than others, but what you have there is definitely purple… lol. I don’t think anyone really has any stereotypes about where I live. Technically, I live in a “southern” state, but in the northernmost part that’s quite distinct from everywhere else. Hope you had a wonderful run! It started out around 60* and raining here, then it got sunnier… and then it became completely rainy and windy all over again. :(

I live in Nevada and the stereotypical thing about where I live is that a lot of people thinks everyone goes to Las Vegas all the time to gamble, drink, party, whatever it may be. It would take me an 8 hour drive just to get to Vegas and I hate gambling. I see no reason to waste my money on such a thing.

I think it is wonderful that you are so honest about topics such as commenting because I find it very overwhelming at times, for instance I am trying to catch up now with all the great bloggers out there. But I have to admit I feel the little blogs (like mine) do get overlooked, but I am grateful for all the comments I do get ; ) I now everyone is busy, I am busy, so no hard feelings. hey love! I love yoru pasta bowl it is so full of colors in there, its hard to believe its edible!! so pretty :) oh sure there are def sterotypes abot where I live. An upper middle classs neighborhood where most things are handed to the kids by their parents. Many kids in my HS had BMWs and Brand new cars waiting for them in their driveway when they turned 16. The whole thing is a joke. It is not just the kids either, the parents parade in the most materialistic cars, clothes and accesories. It makes me sad to think that their kids will grow up to think that this is how the rest of the world works, ya know?? I had an amazing group of friends and we were so tight knit and surpassed all the drama and craziness of my sterotype city.

Living in South Africa, yes definitely LOTS of stereotypes! Like:

Wild animals running around in the street – not true
Everyone wearing loincloths – not true
And behaving like Tarzan – not true!

We have cities just like any other part of the world, in fact if you landed in Johannesburg or Cape Town you wouldn’t even know it was Africa.

But luckily we don’t let stereotypes bother us too much – we’re too busy living it up in the best country in the world! :-)

I’m a born and bred Hawai’ian, so I definitely get A WHOLE MESS of stereotypes heaped my way.
Do you hula?
Do you surf?
Do you eat coconuts like everyday?
Do you surf to school?
Do you have computers there?
Do you shaka to everyone?
Is Hawai’ian pizza your favorite type of pizza?
Do you put pineapple on everything?

Now that I live in Los Angeles, when I go home I get:
Are you a bad driver now?
You must give people a lot of attitude?
Have you seen a lot of homeless?
Are you obsessed with Mexican food?
Do you see celebrities every day?
Do you go to Hollywood a lot?
Does everyone there get plastic surgery?
Are there a lot of blondes?
Do you surf?
