You know you were born in the 80s if…

It was a dreary Monday here in Texas.  Seems like we’ve had a lot of rain this winter.  I think rain is my least favorite weather condition. Ugly weather calls for comforting food!

But I didn’t stop with Roll Ups. On another day, I made Strawberry Shortcake Pizza.

A whole dessert pizza, just for me!

And another time, a strawberry shortcake sandwich:

It always makes me think back to those cutey-pie dolls I played with as a kid.

I love to cover my pancakes with yogurt, flax and berries — it’s like pie for breakfast! (the flax gives it a pie-like crunch)

I loved My Little Pony, especially the scratch-and-sniff ones, and the Care Bears. So many colors! 🙂

  2. Stef @ moretolifethanlettuce says

i love having whole desserts, just for me! sharing may be caring, but sometimes peeps just need to make their own ;). i feel like i was robbed of part of my childhood bc i never knew about strawberry shortcake dolls until i was older!

  3. jcd says

What a divine breakfast! The pancake rolls remind me of crêpes we ate growing up. (And still eat.) I never thought to do this with pancakes though – brilliant! You should patent all your great ideas! Or write a cookbook.

Ah… all those 80s toys. I was big on My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch Kids, Care Bears, and Strawberry Shortcake too. I also had one of those Secret Keepers – a white swan with a purple back. Oh, that brings back memories…

  4. Darci says

wow, those pancake roll ups look AMAZING!! I’m going to have to try those out!! A snow day like today would be perfect!! 🙂

I would have to say cabbage patch kids and then when I got a little older i went barbie crazy!! 😉

  5. Meg says

I was a TOTALY Barbie girl, and American Girl – I HAD to read every issue of their magazine, and make the little recipes inside, which I do believe once included a strawberry shortcake 😉

  6. erintakescontrol says

I had a whole nursery of Cabbage Patch dolls…and later on, Barbies. And then I got over the girly stuff pretty quick, because I found softball and flag football!!!

  7. Veggiesmack says

All those strawberries are making me huuuunggggryyyy!

I’m sick of this nasty Texas weather too. I don’t remember having a winter this cold and rainy and gross. 🙁

My favorite toys were Care Bears, Jem Dolls, my Atari 7800, my record player, and this educational computery toy I don’t remember the name of (not a Speak and Spell, but sort of like one).

  8. Marie says

I played with My Little Pony and Barbies! My favorite part of the barbies was cutting off their hair. My sister would get so mad at me for mangling the haircut of her barbies (along with my own!) Your strawberry shortcake pancakes look amazing!!!

  9. Michal says

Aww this post brings back memories. I love strawberry shortcake I still have a little collection of them packed away im my closet. 🙂 Your strawberry shortcake pancake roll-ups look divine!

  10. Jessica says

As usual, everything looks sensational! Can’t wait to make some of those roll-ups! 🙂

Haha, my favorite toys were He-man and She-ra action figures. I used to tote Skeletor around in a baby carriage!

  11. bookworm bri says

Rainbow brite, Jem and Pound Puppies all the way!! And shamefully GI-Joe, He-man & She-ra, Ninja Turtles….I had 3 older brothers who monopolized the tv.

  12. Bianca- Vegan Crunk says

My first bedroom when I was a baby was decorated in EVERYTHING Strawberry Shortcake. And I loved the Cabbage Patch Kids and the Snorks. And the Get-Along Gang/Shirt Tales (had the biggest crush on Rocky Raccoon).

  13. Maurie Kirschner says

See – strawberries and creamy stuff – THAT’s what I’m talking about! Those pictures were pure torture!

My favorite toys when I was a kid were trees, dirt and anything outside. My favorite companions were the animals. I was such a tom boy!

  14. Katie says

One time I dressed up as “rainbow bright” for Halloween, but I don’t actually think I played with her as a child. I wonder how I could make “rainbow bright” into a breakfast theme…?

  15. maggie says

Ok I have to admit I just died when I saw the SSC crepe pizza! Soooo amazing. I grew up as a big sesame street kid…I loved my elmo! Other then that it was my mother’s holly hobbie dolls that kept me company.

    Love flashbacks 🙂

    Love u,
    Maggie

  16. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) says

Katie you have a serious talent for breathing new life into everyday foods. Sometimes all it takes is a new way of eating something to get me excited all over again! Right now I can’t imagine wanting to just stack my pancakes. That is so 2009.

I am right there with ya on those 80s obsessions–I must have watched every episode and movie of the Care Bears at least 234565 times!

  17. pen says

I loved Strawberry shortcake as a kid…but, have you seen the new Strawberry Shortcake dolls? She’s all tarty with a tight dress and such. I’m moderately disturbed.

  18. Daria @ Daria Can Cook says

Man those pancake rolls look good!

I had a My Little Pony with sparkly fairy wings that moved up and down and a few sea horse MLPs that accompanied me during my baths. I was a lucky kid. 🙂

  19. Susan says

It sounds weird, but my favorite “toy” as a kid was a deck of cards. My dad taught me to play hearts, poker, blackjack, etc. all by the time I was eleven!

  20. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says

I liked my American Girl doll, Felicity. I also had Sheera dolls and a Sheera’s castle. I need to see if I can find them in my parents’ attic!

  21. Mae (OhhMay.Wordpress) says

I was always bummed when my friends played with strawberry shortcake dolls and I didn’t have any!

These look so awesome!! I always ask for strawberry shortcake for my birthday cake because it can easily exclude dairy (with soyatoo).
I haven’t had a strawberry shortcake-esque breakfast since the summer! That needs to change now!!

And by the way, my least favorite weather conditions would be hurricanes or tornadoes. 😉

  22. Brandi says

My personal favorite was and STILL IS (I have a bunch) My Little Pony! I did have a few of those dolls you’ve got pictured there, plus barbies, the cupcake dolls, and other stuff. But, My Little Ponies will always have my heart 🙂

  23. Demelza says

I seemed to go through phases in my childhood.
Barbies, Sky Dancers, Polly Pocket, My Little Pony, American Girls (I had Samantha and Josefina, with several outfits to match, of course ;] )…

I guess my true favorite toy to play with, though, were model horses. Like the ones by Breyer.

I was more an imagination type of girl, though. You know, it’s strange…last semester in my social psychology class we did an activity at the very beginning where we had to go around the class and find a person who fulfilled certain criteria on the paper. One of those was a person who “imagined him/herself as a superhero, etc.” and I was the ONLY PERSON in my entire class who had played imagination games as a kid! I’m proud of my “Sailor Moon” period. I don’t know what the world would have done without my crime fighting days. ;]

Oh, and by the way, I am totally re-making these strawberry shortcake roll-ups at some point. <3 Strawbs + vegan cream? Genius.

  24. Chrysta says

oooh yum!!! Strawberry shortcake pizza?! delicious!!! When I was a kid I used to LOVE poppels..hahah…remember those?! I used to collect them all!

  25. Selina says

I had to leave a comment because I loved my 80’s toys. Way better then the toys they have these days. I had the Lemon Meringue doll from Strawberry Shortcake. She smelled like lemons & she was my favorite. I also had Alphie (another favorite), Cricket (a talking doll) & a Pillow Person (I still have that actually). Oh those were the gold ole days!!

  26. Meredith says

I love Strawberry Shortcake! I have a whole list of toys I loved: cabbage patches, pound puppies, care bears, poppels, littlest pet shop, polly pocket, rainbow brite . . .

  27. catms916 says

Ok I muuust try those pancakes this weekend. They look too insanely good to pass up. Have you invented the machine that allows me to pluck out and eat all the lovely things you make yet?? I was more a fan of stuffed animals and my dog growing up… I think I never sat still long enough to have a favorite toy.

  28. BroccoliHut says

I was a huge fan of My Little Ponies too. Do you remember Poppels? They were another favorite amongst my toy collection:)

  29. Christina says

What great ideas for rolled pancake fillings! Cinnamon roll sounds really good.

I used to love American Girl Dolls when I was little. I had most of them and my entire living room was filled with their furniture!

  30. Kate says

oh my gosh! i had barbies and cabbage patch kids coming out my ears. i also had a ton of troll dolls. i think those were my favorite.

  31. Hannah says

Yum! Though I think I’m still partial to the carrot cake versions 🙂

I didn’t have a lot of toys as a kid, but I did love my cabbage patch doll and – wait, I remember! Polly Pockets!! 😀

  32. EE says

My favorite toys were books…. and My Little Ponies. 😉

Also, love your Etsy shop. What it’s called (minus the “sews”) is what my parents called me when I was little.

  33. Heather Eats Almond Butter says

My gosh Katie, I get a few days behind, and look at all I missed. Pancake roll-ups?!? Have I told you lately how much I love you? Mine would be filled with Trader Joe’s whipped cream cheese, cinnamon, and Artisana Cacao Bliss. Yum!!!

Loving all the strawberry action in this post. Has me looking forward to summer – been a dreary winter here in Nashville as well. I used to love Strawberry Shortcake. I had the big doll that blew strawberry kisses…I think, or did I just make that up?

  34. EE says

Also, I just realized I had the wrong Katie. I’m sorry! Wanted to let you know I’m not that careless!

You should have an Etsy site that sells pictures of your Babies.

  35. Cynthia K says

I was just laughing to myself last night, because one Christmas well over 20 years ago, my mom crocheted a blanket for my Cabbage Patch dolls. I still have that blanket and I use it to cover my small daughter!

We had all the usual assortment of toys: Rainbow Brite, My Little Pony, Care Bears, Popples, etc….but some of my favorites were also my brother’s A-Team collection…anyone else have those! We had so much fun playing A-team!

  36. Vegan Valerie says

    Hi Katie!

Growing up, I had quite a few girl’s toys, like Strawberry Shortcake Dolls, Barbies, My Little Ponies and even the American Girl Bear complete with many outfits. But interestingly, the toys I played with most were Legos, Transformers, Star Wars figures, and Nintendo games such as Mario and Zelda and the like. My little brother and his friends were my best friends. I did everything with them, even sleepovers! I thought I was just one of the guys! It was a wonderful time! I miss those days…

Thanks Katie, for heading up such a thoughtful discussion. It seems to have overshadowed your fine culinary skills today! 🙂 How do you feel about that?

Well, I always love coming to your blog. And of course, you are welcome at mine anytime. 🙂

  37. The voracious Vegan says

Rain is DEFINITELY the worst of all kinds of weather! I can’t stand rain. One of the many reasons I love living in Saudi Arabia.

Hmmm…honestly, my favorite ‘toys’ weren’t really toys, they were books. Whenever my parents asked what I wanted for xmas or birthdays I would always say books. Luckily they always complied!

I also collected Breyer Horses, but they aren’t really toys either. They are pretty little horse figurines, totally realistic looking and more art than anything. I’ve still got them packed up in a box, if I ever settle somewhere permanently they will be out on display for sure!

  38. melissa says

I have a bunch of old she-ra dolls I’m trying to find a buyer for. Anyone know anyone if so pls email me.

  39. Trish @ MyBigFatBundt says

This posting is a little ‘dated’, but I saw 80’s and started laughing. Born in ’81, I was obsessed with My Little Pony, Care Bears, RAINBOW BRIGHT!!, the Smurfs, Scooby-Doo (but I guess I was watching the one’s that were even older than I was), She-ra (sp?)…and of course movies like Back to the Future, the Star Wars series, and pretty much all things Eddie Murphy. (Okay, I was a bit too young for his comedy, but I still sneaked it in somehow without getting caught…). There are really way too many things to list…Michael Jackson, Madonna, Brite Lite…oh gosh! I liked growing up in the 80’s, lol…but something tells me the 70’s were much cooler. 😉
I am making my first pizzert today, and the strawberries are looking very tasty. I have some super ripe juicy ones in the fridge right now. xx

Haha oh yes, this IS an old post! I love getting comments on old posts, because I’ve forgotten about them.

I feel like I missed too much of the 80s! I was born in ’86… but I did love Care Bears! And my room was Rainbow Bright :).
