My Body is Confused

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on March 22, 2010

Am I hot?  Am I cold?  Can you tell me, Katy Perry?

A few days ago, I thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon run on a beyond-gorgeous, 72-and-sunny day.

Fast forward to my next run:

Same location… or was it?  I woke up to snow on the ground. In Texas? In March??  Wasn’t it supposed to be the first day of Spring?

Weather.com proclaimed: “Feels like 19, with 38mph winds.”  Unfortunately for me, I ignored the second part of that statement, thinking: “No big deal, I’ve run in the 20s before.

Running in the cold is fun.”

And sure enough, when I set out, I felt fine.  In fact, for the whole first 1/2-hour of my run, I was fine.  But then I turned around.

*Cue foreboding music*

That’s when the wind hit me.

Oh my word, was it ever windy!  At times, it literally knocked me backwards.  But, in order to get home, I had no choice but to keep going into it.  During lulls (i.e. when the gusts seemed to “only” be in the 20-mph range), I would sprint as fast as I possibly could.  And when it got really bad, I resorted to sideways-running (grapevines) and side-skipping so I wouldn’t have to face the wind directly.  It probably looked ridiculous, but I was too cold to care… plus I don’t think anyone else was as insane as me; they were all indoors!

To keep my mind off the bitter cold, I came up with this list:

.

Good things about Running in Ridiculously-Horrible Weather

  • You feel like a warrior!  (Or maybe an Olympian)
  • It’s definitely a good, challenging workout.
  • Being forced to run in a different style (the aforementioned side-skipping/grapevines) offers variety and works different muscles.
  • It really wakes you up!
  • Everything looks prettier covered in snow.

And finally:

  • When you finally make it back home, your warm&toasty post-run meal is even more enjoyable than usual.  (Eating in front of the fireplace is encouraged.)

.

Yesterday, said warm&toasty post-run meal included Kozyshack Oatmeal Pudding

DSCN0344_thumb27

(It also included multiple cups of hot green tea!)

Recently, I’ve made a lot of Kozyshack Oatmeal Pudding

…but it hasn’t all been for me!

.

I made it for these hungry kiddos:

kids

.

Charlie even had his with Soyatoo on top!

DSCN0347_thumb16

Did he like it?

DSCN0348

Guess so ;) .

.

Molly and Henry would like to thank you all for your compliments yesterday

… Although they’re irked that they didn’t get as many compliments as the Green Fudge Babies

fbg

Oh well, what can ya do?

Happy Monday, everyone.  And happy Spring… sort of :-? .

Hopefully you’re all enjoying warmer weather than we are!!

Apparently, while we were blasted with snow and wind in Dallas, it was in the 70s in Boston!

.

Questions (Many) of the Day

1. What’s your favorite part of Spring?  I’d say warm weather, but um… yeah…

2. Anyone have anything to add to the running list at the beginning of the post?

3. Anyone else experiencing weird weather?

4. Or, you can still answer yesterday’s “question of the day”

I love Spring because of the signs of new life – like flowers and trees, etc. I think it is a time for renewal. Although, we might be getting some snow this week…ugh!

You and your cousins are so pretty! But the green babies are prettier. Sorry ;)

Evan,
Haha I’d say kudos to YOU. I try to avoid going on the treadmill at all costs. Poor Mr. Treadmill…

Yeah!! He stopped for a while (hey, he’s only 10!), but for the past two months, he’s been meatless again!! And his sister has decided to give up pork and beef! I love these guys :) :)

uh, I had a similar awful weather experience last week. Wind is really the worst when you’re workout out outside.

Reply

Danielle March 22, 2010 at 2:32 pm

I kn0w what you mean about running in the wind! Sometimes I feel like I’m doing the “running man” as in I’m moving but not going anywhere.

Something to add to the list: People start to refer to you as “hardcore.” Muaha ;)

I’m glad it didn’t though :)

It was in the 70s this weekend now we are back to 40s and 50s…boooo. I love spring for the weather (and my birthday) ;-)

jcd March 22, 2010 at 2:44 pm

It snowed here this morning too. Granted, I live in Canada… snow in Texas is just weird. I tip my hat at you, for going for a run in such bad weather. I opted for more sleep.

My favourite parts of spring is watching the bunnies turn from white to brown, watching the buds on the trees begin to open (so pretty up close), the extra sunshine, and planting my garden.

Keep warm!

Valerie March 22, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I love Charlie! And I agree with an above comment that he’s lucky to have you as his cousin :) .

CCV March 22, 2010 at 2:46 pm

JCD,
Oh I definitely went the “more sleep” route the day before, when it was pouring rain AND windy and cold. Now it’s nice again. At least the good thing about Tx weather is that if you don’t like it, you can wait 24 hours and it’ll probably change (except in the summers when it’s always hot).

McKella March 22, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Wow, you’re a trooper. I’m the biggest cold wuss in the world. If I get’s below 60 I sit in front of the heater.
I loooove spring because it’s the end of winter! No more yucky snow, the flowers and color come back, sunshine, warm temperatures, and this spring I have graduation to look forward to! Five more weeks!

Jessica (PB & Jess) March 22, 2010 at 3:04 pm

St. Louis is cold too, not to mention rainy. Boo!

Spring isn’t my favorite time of year because it rains all the time and never wants to stay warm. I’m looking forward to wearing bright springy colors again though! :)

Bekkah March 22, 2010 at 3:10 pm

Spring’s ok, because it means summer is almost here! THAT’S the real season to look forward to!

Sarah March 22, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Hahaha what a funny title. I wonder though if it’s healthy for a body to have to adapt to such severe temperature changes so quickly. I don’t know.

How I wish I loved running. I keep meaning to get back into it but just can’t face it :( tips would be gratefully recieved… What I love about Spring- the unique, fresh smell of the atmosphere warming up and flowers blooming after the depths of winter. Awesome.

It has been crazy weather everywhere I think. It was foggy until 11 a.m. this morning and now it’s sunny and should get up to at least 70 like it’s been.
Lovin those green fudge babies.

Spring is COLD and WINDY in Colorado – so my favorite part about the spring is the anticipation of summer. :-) Is that cheating?

Kady @ Livin, Lovin, Learnin March 22, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Yikes, running in cold wind is the worst!
I run in the snow/cold for about 4 months of the year and I think you hit some great “good things” about it. I feel so tough during/after and it makes snuggling up inside feel so amazing afterwards! Another great thing – YOU become in charge of the weather, not the other way around. The weather doesn’t control your actions (like make you stay inside), which makes you feel stronger and more tolerant of bad weather. I get all like “you don’t control me, weather. Give me rain, snow, cold, whatever, I’m still stronger than you!” haha!

I love all the new buds and flowers of spring!

favorite part of spring?? going outside without worrying about a coat!! and also running in the beautiful weather, budding flowers :)

awesome run, way to brave the elements, girl!

ilanalala March 23, 2010 at 7:38 pm

You’re pretty bad ass for running in the wind! I like the weather too sometimes- if I’m stuck out there and there’s nothing I can do about it I just accept it (like when I got caught in the rain last night).

Fave part of spring – the smell. You know, that springtime smell of grass and growing. So amazing.

Quix March 23, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Green babies! Adorable!

I loooooove spring. However, I’m experiencing the weird weather with you (Austinite here) and I am such a cold weather wuss I’ve been confined to the treadmill as most of my running days have been COLD! Brrr!

Can’t wait for the last of the freezing temperatures to go by the wayside and the warm weather to roll in. I’ll even take the 100+s over the under 40s.

jqlee March 25, 2010 at 6:23 am

I ran in what I THOUGHT was warm weather but after about 8 miles, i could not feel my hands anymore. i could not tell if i was holding my ipod anymore except for the fact that it had not fallen out of my hands. i literally had no feeling. i pushed through until mile 10 but then i had to go home. when i got to my front door, i couldn’t feel the knob so i couldn’t turn it. i stood there and blew hot air on my hands until i got some sensation back. OMG, next time i NEED to remember to wear gloves!!
