Enough about Food Rules.
Let’s talk movies
I’m in dire need of good movie recommendations.
Recently, I’ve been striking out an awful lot. Post Grad was forgettable, Couples’ Retreat was just ok. Everybody’s Fine was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. If you’re in the mood for a depressing movie in which nothing happens, rent that! Otherwise, stay far away.
.
Switching topics:
Have you ever boarded the Blended Grain Train?
By now, everyone and their little brother knows how to blend oatmeal…
.
(Such as in PB-Banana Oatmeal Fusion)
.
But what about kamut?
What about bulgur? Or wheatberries? What about the healthiest grain in the world?
These grains are just as delicious—when blended—as oatmeal, and they offer variety (from just eating oatmeal all the time), which everyone knows is the spice of life
.
(In the above cream-a-licious pics: Cream of Wheat? Nope, it’s Cream of Kamut!)
.
.
About a year ago, the Blended Grains technique stormed through the blogworld.
But then so many other yummy ideas started popping up that the poor blended grains were forgotten like Tickle-Me-Elmo dolls. (Anyone remember that hoopla?)
So sad, because the Blended-Grains technique is way too good for such a fate!
.
To refresh your memory, so you don’t have to be bothered clicking on the link, the technique is basically this:
Put your cooked oatmeal (or other grain) with all your mix-ins and a little liquid into a blender, Magic Bullet, or food processor (or use a hand blender) and blend into pudding form!
I know these ladies would agree
.
Therefore, I’m going to start highlighting more blended-grain recipes on my blog:
Starting with bulgur (next week, because I need to get some Easter posts up this week!)
(As I’ve written before, you can also substitute blended grains in any Crazy Oatmeal recipe.)
.
Question of the Day
Going back to the beginning of my post: Have you watched any good movies recently?
What are some of your favorite feel-good movies?
Mine include (but are definitely not limited to) Love Actually, My Cousin Vinny, Miss Congeniality, A League of their Own, Last Holiday, Mulan, The Princess Bride, The American President, While you were Sleeping…
Winner of the Get-Well Giveaway:
Congrats to theprocessofhealing (a super-sweetie!).
Email me with your address and I’ll send it along to Lauren at Celestial Seasonings.

Song of the Day: “Dancing Queen”
(Who doesn’t love ABBA?!)

I bought some hulled barley, but I haven’t made any yet! I totally forgot about it. Shame on me…
My movie list: Love love loved Avatar. I also love The Princess Bride, The Sandlot, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and The Muppet Movie:)
katieeeee! i made your carrot cake sandwich for lunch yesterday! i put in everything you did, but added some flaked coconut too. so delishie!
oh and i drizzled on some agave. love! it was amazing. thank you
I really love the Harry Potter movies. Yeah I’m a nerd!
How could anyone forget the blended grains? Your technique CHANGED my life! I can never repay you, dear!
I really like old movies. Casablanca, On the Waterfront, those types. Yes yes, some would call me old-fashioned. There’s just something so glamorous about black-and-white movies.
Oh, 21! I was just thinking about watching it. It came at such a perfect time in my life and really motivated me in the right direction
I’m glad you asked this question, because I’ve seen a lot of lousy movies lately too, so I’ll be looking to others’ answers for ideas!
And I also agree wholeheartedly with Aimee about the blended grains. Genius!
I first saw the blended grain idea on the “Eat, Live, Run” blog when she tried your idea and linked to you.
In fact, that’s how I found your blog!
That cream of kamut looks so yummy!
Good movies… I’m always looking for recommendations too. Star Trek was excellent, if you’re into Sci-Fi. The Ugly Truth was hilarious, in a weird but fun sort of way. Hmmm… what else… Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure and The Princess and the Frog were both really good too.
My feel good movies include: Love Actually, The Princess Bride, Pretty Woman, Hitch, Save the Last Dance, You’ve Got Mail, and everything by DreamWorks, Pixar, or Disney.
Today’s Song: Broken Wing by Thousand Foot Krutch.
Love Actually always makes me smile. I just saw The Ghost Writer and it was awesome!!
Well…I haven’t been blogging for long enough to have gone through the blended grain “fad.” So, it’s new to me!!
I think it’s kinda sad that delicious food/concoctions go through phases. Kabocha, overnight oats, and coconut butter are here to stay
For feel-good movies, I love the old Disney movies, because they bring me back to my childhood
My favorite movies are ET, Goodfellas, Weekend at Bernie’s, and Ace Ventura Pet Detective.
The blended grain fad it new to me! Where the heck have I been to have missed out on that awesomeness?!
I’ve been having the same issue. I love the classics: Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, and even newer classics like The Graduate, etc, but I got Netflix in a quest to catch up on modern cinema and I haven’t really loved anything. Plus, most of the discs I get are scratched and skippy. Meh.
Hmmm movie recommendations, eh?
Well, favorites include:
- Little Women
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the TV series, not the movie!)
- Firefly (also a TV series)
Films I’ve seen recently that were decent:
- Hancock (really good)
- Ghost Town (also really good)
- Pans Labyrinth (gory but good)
- Surrogates (this was just ok, but is a newer release so I included it anyway)
- Moon (interesting, if nothing else)
- Taken (yay Liam Neeson!)
- The Brothers Bloom
- (500) Days of Summer
- Crazy Sexy Cancer (a documentary, but good)
- Angels & Demons (I hated The DaVinci Code, but this was actually decent)
- Best in Show
- Tropic Thunder (I felt guilty for liking this…but I liked it anyway!)
- Greenfingers (cute and British)
Okay I’ll stop now!
Shoot me an email if you watch any of these and find that you really like them.
Pirates of the Caribbean!
I watched Benny and Joon for the zillionth time last night — always a winner. And I recently saw Death at a Funeral (the original version). It was silly and slapsticky and British, and I loved it. The idea of an american version featuring Tracy Morgan makes me sad for Hollywood.
Dirty Dancing is my favorite movie. I’ve seen it so many times that I know what lines are coming next, lol. Some other favorites are Pretty Woman, Tommy Boy (always makes me laugh!), Pirates of the Caribbean, and old Disney movies.
Awww yay!!!! I hardly ever win anything!
Thank you darling!!
Ooo my mom and I tried to watch Everybody’s Fine and we got about 20 minutes in and turned it off. It was… strange.
My favorite movies are The Holiday, The Wedding Planner (cracks me up every time!), Sweet Home Alabama, Home Alone 1 and 2, Because I Said So, P.S. I Love You, The Proposal,… I could go on lol
And I need to try the blended grains technique, sounds good!!!
Much love!
The blogworld may have been fickle and forgotten, but I ain’t Katie! Its not all about trends, got to mix up all those macronutrients and have some fun with it
I’m a bit of a dreamer, so my favourite films are ones like Avatar, Lord of the Rings (why oh why does a man with long blond hair wearing tights look so good to me?), Narnia… come to England and I’ll show you all the spots they used for filming Love Actually!
haha! we have such similar tastes in movies! The American President is my all-time favorite, and Love Actually and While You Were Sleeping are up at the top too! I also love the remake of Sabrina.
I just cooked barley for the first time last week, but had it for dinner. I definitely want to try and expand my breakfast grains, so I will be checking to see what you do for tips! Love it!
Some of my favs are: About a Boy, Crazy/Beautiful, Gone With the Wind, and Splash. I haven’t seen any really good movies lately though…
Blended grains are definitely good eats. I’ve been taking a break from hot breakfasts because of the warm weather here…have you tried them cold?
a league of their own is my fav
xo-Molly
Love Actually and Princess Bride are definitely two of my top favorite movies as well. I can recite Princess Bride line for line and I can never get sick of Love Actually either. Other favorites include Nightmare Before Christmas, Grease.. a million others.. I love musicals and wacky stuff.
Ok, the obvious question is have you seen The Blind Side? I’d say from your movies you’d like it.
I like many of the same ones you do.
Have you ever seen The Truth about Cats & Dogs? Some Kind of Wonderful? Adventures in Babysitting? Someone like you? Those are some oldies but goodies i the sort of B movie department.
Hmmm….favorite movie? I love Gummo, but only because it’s sick and twisted. And I’m a huge fan of Clueless and Empire Records, both films from my younger days.
oh yah i remember the blended grains!
You would definitely not like my taste in movies, so I won’t even bother listing them
.
vegangal,
I’m so excited you tried it!!
Valerie,
You sound like my dad!
ABBA is so great
My favourite movies are Green Mile, everything with Bruce Willis (drooool!
), Forrest Gump, Pretty Woman, Shrek and Ice Age. There are many others too, but those I could watch over and over again.
My favorite movies are Amelie, Stranger Than Fiction, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog(not a movie, webshow SO AWESOME), Once, The Science of Sleep, Zach and Miri Make a Porno, The Hangover, Empire Records, Wet Hot American Summer, Death At A Funeral(the original the American one makes me so sad, it looks HORRIBLE), The 400 Blows, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Garden State, Firefly (tv show) and Serenity, Run Lola Run, Hannah Takes the Stairs, Love Actually and Elf are really cute. I love anything by Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon…
I just had blended pumpkin oatbran for breakfast. Phenomenal!
My favorite movies are: About a Boy, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Shrek 2 (I know…random) and Little Miss Sunshine. There are a ton more, but that’s just a snippet!
Please post the bulgur recipe soon! I love bulgur!
Oh, I just remembered one more… Annie! A timeless classic.
First off, I’ve missed your blog!!! I’ve been away for far too long…so much to catch up on.
Best movie…as in can be from any time? Are you a musical fan? I’m obsessssed with Moulin Rouge, otherwise I still love Jim Carey in Liar Liar–good for a laugh:)
aww I love ABBA! Mamma Mia was playing at my gym yesterday
Hmm movies…I am a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn! Roman Holiday is amazing!!
I really liked the Hurt Locker. (500) Days of Summer was great too! Oh and Julie & Julia (or basically anything with Meryl Streep).
My favorite movie ever is Moulin Rouge. I also love The Illusionist, Across the Universe, Slumdog Millionaire, Zoolander . . . and sooooo many others

oh, and 500 Days of Summer! that’s one of my new favorite movies. its hilarious, the main guy is a cutie, and it has a really great soundtrack
I’ve heard Blind Side is so good. I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s definitely on my to see list. Everyone I know that has seen it has raved about it!
The Sound of Music was on TV recently- so freaking good if you haven’t seen it in a while.
Also- thanks for the link on Barley- I always learn something new form you on this blog- thanks for that!
lately i watched cloudy with a chance of meatballs and it was cute enough and i want to watch blind side tonight
Lovin the breakfast grains you whip up!
Here are a few Favorite movies:
I have to say that I am also a fan of Princess Bride like so many other commenters. P.S. I Love U was a cute romantic comedy.
I absolutely love old movies and Foreign films, quirky off beat too.
A couple of Romantic oldies: An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant
Waterloo Bridge-a tear jerker, even my brother cried when he first saw it.
Foreign Films: A Room With a View(my absolute fav!!!)
Love Serenade(an Australian movie)a favorite of my husband and I that we will watch every now and again.
Like Water For Chocolate(subtitled)
French Horror movie: High Tension(subtitled or dubbed in english) great great flick.
Anything Bill Murray-GroundHog Day(very funny).
Hott Fuzz is so freakin funny as well.
I LOVE your movie selection! My all time favorite movie ever is Breakfast at Tiffany’s because Audrey is a goddess:) Second runner up is Pride and Prejudice. I loooove both the BBC production with Mr. Foxy Pants Colin Firth, but the 2005 production with Keira Knightly is also on my list! Actually, I pretty much love every movie based on a Jane Austen book, haha.
Whenever I am at my parent’s house, I always make full use of their immersion blender for some blended oat deliciousness! They are certainly not forgotten in my book, yo.
I watched the Time Traveler’s Wife recently. It was really good but really sad! If you need a laugh, I recommend Zoolander
It’s one of my favs. And if you want more recent, The Proposal was good too!
i love many including: the blind side, second hand lions, for richer or poor, just like heaven, the first kid, the national treasure movies….i could keep going haha
=)
My “favorite” tastes are kind of all over the board – Moulin Rouge, Fight Club, Slumdog Millionaire, The Natural, Harry Potter movies.
I noticed a lot of people said While You Were Sleeping – if you like Sandra Bullock, I thought The Proposal was kind of cute. Other semi-recent flicks we have liked include Brothers Bloom, Food Inc., and oddly enough, Zombieland. Really did not expect to like that slap-stick movie, but it was pretty amusing.
I love movies like the Notebook and a Dear John. Yes, I am a romance person
I also like james bond though! Haha!
<3 jess
xoxo
Hmm guess I need to get my blend on…I think I’ve tried only blended oat bran (with silken tofu!) thus far.
I’ve been in the mood to watch An Officer and a Gentleman recently. Classic:)
OMG I went into the theater expecting a comedy from Everybody’s Fine. What?? It was awful! I couldn’t get over it. haha
Ok, I have a lot of good ones.
We recently got 500 days of Summer from Netflix… it wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was good.
If you are looking for some fluff/dumb humor?
The House Bunny, The Hot Chick, Mean Girls, Dead Man On Campus
Favorite line from House Bunny: “Instead of the Mahi Mahi, can I just have the one Mahi because I’m not that hungry?”
Any 80′s movie.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Twilight… obv!!!
Fave movie = Manhattan. I can’t wait to try blended grains!
So funny you posted this as I tried to watch Everybody’s Fine yesterday. Oh my gosh, how depressing. I finally shut it off after Robert De Niro was mugged in the subway. Too much of a downer for me.
Katie, I am embarrassed to admit that I have yet to use my Magic Bullet to make blended grains. I used to eat them everyday last year. What is my problem?!?
The American President is one of my FAVORITE movies! Every time he gets to the speech where he says “My name is Andrew Shepard and I am the president” I get choked up (ok, I’ll admit it, I fully tear up).
As for movies you didn’t mention, I haven’t been watching too many feel good movies lately. I have been watching documentaries mostly. Food, Inc, King Corn and one about Walmart were all recently watched. Oh, I love the Notebook!
Oh, and I totally second Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog!
Ok i love that someone mentioned ‘truth about cats and dogs’…so cute and the soundtrack is awesome!
My rainy day movies…Waiting to Exhale, Runaway Bride, French Kiss, Only You, 13 going on 30, Never Been Kissed. And on the non-girlie side, The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains
I’ve hardly watched any movies lately. I need a list too! Some I always enjoy off the top of my head are: Little Miss Sunshine, Garden State, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 13 Going On 30, Happy Gilmore, White Chicks, Night at the Roxbury, Memento, Fast and the Furious, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, Finding Nemo, Lilo and Stitch… okay random list right there! I keep thinking of good ones. I’m quitting now.
I always forget to blend my oats. I’m going to try to remember tomorrow AM!
ABBA is so great!
I can’t wait to try blended cereal. I’ll add that to my list of things to try this weekend.
-The Hangover was pretty funny, if you are looking for a mindless comedy. Some times those are just necessary.
The American President is definitely a great movie! High up on my list, but i will have to go with Hook as my all time favorite as kid and Brothers falls in a close second now along with Sleepless in Seattle and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The two best movies I have watched lately are New Moon and Precious. I would definitely reccomend watching both
My brother laughed at me when he found out Dancing Queen was on my workout playlist. So glad I’m not the only one!
We just watched The Proposal and it was really cute. I also love Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka (the original), Office Space, Ferris Bueller… lots of good stuff!
AN EDUCATION
REALLLLLY GOOD OSCAR NOMINATED ACTRESS.
WATCH IT PEOPLEEEEEEEE
My favourite movie is Kung Fu Panda. I haven’t seen any movies lately, well except for the Avatar, which I liked too.
I love the Legally Blonde films and 13 going on 30…but Muppet’s Christmas Carol beats them all hands down
You should totally see Whip It, a fun and inspiring movie about a roller derby team, and a girl who finds her niche there.
My favorite movie of all time is Office Space. The movie is especially great if you have worked in a corporate/office environment before!
It’s been blended grain MADNESS at my house lately. Thanks so much!
I’ve made the following flavors:
Pumpkin Apricot Oats
Chocolate Caramelized Banana
Cherry Almond
Pumpkin Date
Strawberries & Cream
I’ve been doing the quick cooking method you introduced in the better than Kozy shack thread. I nuke my third a cup oats for about 2 minutes, then let them sit overnight to fluff up. In the morning I blend 2/3 of the oats with my chosen add ins, then dump the creamy blended stuff into a bowl and mix in the unblended oats (for chewiness). I heat it up in the microwave for about 45 seconds and top with raw almonds. SO DARN AMAZING.
The pumpkin apricot was spectacular. I blended the oats with two tbs of pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and some vanilla plus a dried apricot I soaked overnight. Yummy yum yum!
The caramelized banana chocolate was also soooo good. 1 tsp. cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate extract, nutmeg and half a banana topped with raw almonds. Heavenly.
Thanks for sharing! I love blending my oats.
Definitely alvin and the chipmunks the squeakquel their the best singers and dancers ever
