Magic Mushrooms

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on April 16, 2010

Story time!

One day back in high school, my art teacher (we’ll call her “Mrs. Smith”) decided to show off a mushroom-shaped piece of pottery made by a student.

“Look, class,” she said.  “Isn’t this gorgeous?”

Her question was met with snickers. Confused, she asked, “You don’t think it’s beautiful?  Just look at the skill; look at the attention to detail.”

More snickers. Finally, someone got up the nerve to tell her:

“Mrs. Smith, it’s a bong!”

Magic Mushrooms

(serves 2)

  • 350 grams mushrooms, sliced (about 2 packages)
  • 1/2 tbsp minced garlic (or 1/2 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1 and 1/2 tbsp vinegar (I like red wine vinegar)
  • sautéing liquid of choice
  • 1/4 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • pepper, if desired (I dislike pepper, so I leave it out)
  • optional: beans, tofu, or any other add-ins you wish

Combine all ingredients except for the vinegar.  Sauté over medium heat, stirring very occasionally.  The shrooms will get very liquidy, then they’ll eventually dry out.  When they dry out, add the vinegar, stir, and turn off the heat.  Eat cold or hot.

Regarding those other mushrooms…

Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill.

Don’t buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!

HAHAHA. What a funny little story :D

I love mushrooms, we have a great variety in the forests of Finland and those are absolutely my favourite. I just don’t go picking them myself because I’m sure I would pick the wrong ones and end up poisoned. Not a good idea.

I love your simple recipes. Mushrooms + garlic = happiness. :)

Your art teacher story has me cracking up – totally something I would have done. I grew up pretty sheltered.

Hey I love your blog :) I check it almost everday, just to see whats going on. I was wondering if you had any knowledge that could help me out. I am like you in that I eat very healthily and I am vegan. However, I am noticing that I do not feel as well when i eat soy products and beans. What are some other lean protein sources? I don’t want to live off of peanut butter ( well actually I would love that, but…)

A bong?

…Eh? -clueless-

Ah, well…I decided to try your recipe because I had a carton of mushrooms in the fridge~ I used balsamic vinegar, because I thought apple cider vinegar might be a little weird. :s It turned out really good. ^^

mmmm I had some ‘shrooms for dinner! Although they weren’t accompanied by a ~fabulous~ British popstar, which was kind of sad. But nonetheless, they still tasted glorious :)

Hey anonymous! Thanks for the sweet comment :)

Honestly, so-called “protein foods” (tofu, tempeh, veg burgers, etc.) aren’t my favorite things. I’m more of a carbs-n-veggies girl. You might notice that in the meals I sometimes post (such as the one above). But that’s ok! As long as you’re getting enough calories to meet your body’s energy needs, you don’t need to worry about protein. You’ll be getting enough just with the foods you eat. Did you know that there are 6 grams in a serving of oatmeal?? Or someone told me a cup of broccoli has ten! (Dunno if that’s true…)

But in the following post, I asked people to list their favorite meatless source of protein, so read the comments of the post and maybe it’ll give you some ideas:

http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2009/04/19/its-moo/

Hope that helped! :)

Thank you! My mom just always asks me, “Did you get enough protein today?” haha so annoying.

Loved you art story! I’m taking a pottery class right now and a lot of seniors like to crack jokes and what not. My (hilarious) teacher always says that they can look bong-ish but they just can not be functional.obviously. haha!

Delicious!!! I made these last night and I was a little hesitant at first because they weren’t drying out. I kept on cooking, though, and sure enough they dried out. The red wine vinegar gives the mushrooms the perfect tanginess. Definitely a great recipe. I served it over bow tie pasta and my friend and I loved it!
