Hello from CCK (again)

My blog is going through a change.

(No, not that change!)

I started this blog for fun. As the number of readers climbed, it made me a little nervous. I became much more cautious about privacy; I stopped posting friends’ photos and shared much less of my own personal life as well. But I’m afraid this might’ve made my blog rather boring. Recipes are fun and all, but everyone and her brother has recipes to share. I want to put the personality back in my blog.

Hence the change. Obviously, this doesn’t mean I’m going to start listing all my personal info in posts like a naive idiot. Hello blogworld, here is my credit card number. Here is my social security number. But you won’t use them, right, because I trust you.

There’s another reason I’ve shied away from getting too personal: I’m overly worried about hurting others. I know full well that a large number of people who read my blog are girls (and boys) recovering from eating disorders.  So I worry, hating to think that they might find something in my posts upsetting. They struggle enough as it is; I would feel awful if one of my photos or posts added to their suffering. But the fact is that no matter how careful I am, someone is going to be offended/upset at something I write at some point. I can’t always worry about posting certain words or photos because it might upset someone. That’s not fair to anyone.

I am healthy. So why should I feel like I have to hide my body?  Yes, I have a responsibility, since I’ve chosen to publish information publicly (as I wrote in my first Hello from CCK post). But you, as a reader, also have a responsibility to take good care of yourself. Only you know what type of blog content upsets you or isn’t healthy for you to read. If you don’t take good care of yourself, who will?

What does all this mean? It means, from now on, my blog is going to be less fluff and more real. The recipes will still be there, but I’m also going to share much more of my day-to-day real life.

“Being real” means showing not-so-perfect photos: I’m talking “no-make-up” pics, monochromatic meals, foods on mismatched plates, and sweaty post-run photos. It means allowing you to see the true me: I’m not perfect and do not have all the answers. If you’re thinking, “Ugh, Katie, I have enough real-life issues of my own. I don’t want to hear about yours. I’m only here for the recipes,” then please feel free to skip my posts on the days I write more personal posts. As I said above, I promise to still share many more recipes. But I’m also excited to share more than just recipes.

I do love your recipes, and I am EXCITED for the new fudge babies!!! But I have to say that I am such a huge fan of yours that I’m even more excited to see more of the real you :).

  2. Jennifer - jcd says

This is such a wonderful post. I look forward to the new and more personal blog. This blog is yours and it is entirely up to you waht you do with it, but I like your confidence and attitude towards this new chapter. You Go Girl!

As for your question, I’m fairly guarded around people I don’t know. I try to keep things quiet and down low most days.

On Wednesday I’m going for an hour-long run. It will be difficult for me, as I normally only do 30 minutes, but when the going gets tough I’ll think you and keep going. You’re a great inspiration. Have a wonderful day!

  3. abby says

katie you are so brave to write this! i have a hard time even sharing my personal self with my friends, so i can’t imagine how brave you have to be to share so much with thousands of people reading every day that you don’t even know! thank you so much for caring enough about your loyal readers to put yourself out there like that :).

  4. Jessica (PB & Jess) says

Can’t wait for the new posts! I’m glad you feel free to be more “you”!! 🙂

I’m not a very open person unless I know someone really well. I’m more of the shy and guarded type, lol, but maybe you’ll inspire me to share more too!

  5. Sarahishealthy says

Not to sound stalkerish, but I adore everything about your blog and am so excited you’ll be sharing more!

  6. Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says

Exciting news 🙂 Well, fluff is fun to!

I have to admit that I haven’t done my “blogging coming out” yet and it kinda scares me. I’ve told a couple of friends but I don’t know, I feel more at ease with total strangers than people around me? How crazy am I?

  7. Devyn says

I am so excited for futuren posts! I think that confessionals are healthy and make a blogger more “human?” lol. You are so sweet for taking this as such a responcibility

  8. Dame Noire says

Wow! This once more shows what a cool and brave young lady you are! I look forward very much to seeing more of your day-to-day stuff… somehow the more mundane things are the most fun to share 🙂

  9. Dianne says

Good for you! I’m very excited about the changes. It looks like your ideas are something a lot of people would want to read, so don’t be worried!

  10. MaryZ says

I’m looking forward to seeing more of the real Katie! Exciting! I loving peeking (or peeping) into other peoples lives. Looking forward to more recipes too.

  11. itstartedwithafish says

I say, go for it, girl (as if you needed my permission 😉 )!!!!

I myself am more guarded around the people I know actually, – well, more guarded that I am around strangers, that is, because I really am shy and 100% certain of my non existent worthiness lol but being around strangers always gives me the chance to show a ray of my true ME and test, what they’ll think of it, – see, I am so afraid of losing someone I like for who I am… the ones that don’t know me yet get to see more of ME than anybody else, – talk a bout one sick puppy lol

  12. Amy says

I am a daily reader and am very excited about this! 🙂 As for sharing the ‘real me’ with perfect strangers…I had to think. Really it depends on my mood at the time, my first impression of the person and the situation. I have a very bubbly personality which isn’t readily acceptable in the business world, so at work I am very professional when meeting new people which is definitely not the real me. However, my closest coworkers (department buddies) and I are our true selves behind closed doors. In a social setting it depends on my first impression of the other person. It seems about half of the time I perceive the other personality as too stuffy or arogant for me to want to get to know better. Other times they have me at hello… I’m like a box of chocolates that way I guess. lol :0)

  13. anonymous says

you once wrote that you had a personal post that you still needed to find the courage to publish. will that be one of your future “being real confession” posts?

  14. Mitri says

Your blog is one of the first I started reading over a year or two ago. 🙂 As much as I love trying recipes now & then, what I REALLY love about bloggers is that I can relate to them as honest people with similar interests. I like hearing stories about people’s lives. But I also understand the privacy issue, as I have often flickered back and forth between a boundary of “tell much” and “tell nothing.”

The point of having a blog is for you to enjoy writing, photographing, expressing, being creative, interacting with community members. You don’t have to be some online vegan image with upkeep; you can just be Katie, who happens to be vegan. 😉 Maybe your posts will include vegan stuff, maybe they won’t. Doesn’t matter. KATIE is where it’s at!!!

If people get offended, then they should have the common sense to stop reading your blog. Ta da!

  15. Sydney says

Am I definitely one of the guarded types. I absolutely hate it when anyone finds out about my personal life because I’m always afraid they don’t know the whole story and may come to the wrong conclusions, etc. By being guarded, I have been able to avoid many problems and conflicts that many of my friends have had in the past. However, by closing off my personal info to the world, I may be shutting out potential new friends and experiences that I would truly enjoy. You’ve really gotten me thinking about this, Katie! Anyway, I envy your courage to open up to us a little more and I’m looking forward to reading your posts. Way to go girl!

  16. Mo says

Your posts weren’t boring but I look forward to seeing what happens next. 🙂

I’m pretty guarded… more so in real life than on the internet, though, for some reason. o.O

  17. Laura says

I love reading your blogs, not just for the recipes (although they’re great too!), so i look forward to your future posts!! I’m a very guarded person….. i am hoping that blogging will help me be more open! x

  18. jqlee says

Katie, this is sooo awesome to hear!! One of the reasons I like reading blogs is to learn more about people. Recipes and stuff? I can google those. I would LOVE to hear more about your life and what you do and stuff. You are totally healthy and you exercise for fun and you eat! I know first hand that just because you are thin does not mean you have an ED. My sister is 5’3″ and barely weighs 100 herself. She is trying to put on 10 lbs and eats like it’s no one’s business! So lets see those beautiful pictures of you and your life 🙂 Sans make up and all, trust me I do it too. It’s not pretty sometimes but even when I re-read my blog sometimes, it’s fun to read and FUNNY to reflect.

But you’re absolutely right though, you shouldn’t have to filter yourself THAT much because its other people’s responsibility to take care of themselves, not for you to baby anyone. Of course that doesn’t mean we can go about saying anything and be offensive, but you get what I mean.

I think Im pretty open, pretty real. I have a bit of a “attitude” sometimes so for new people, I try to reign back on that at first. Wouldn’t want to scare anyone off.

  19. sal says

good for you! one of the reasons I enjoy your blog is because of your “voice” and writing style – I am looking forward to hearing more of that through your stories.

  20. Jo says

I love your blog and you must feel to only post what you feel comfortable with. Don’t feel you need to share more than you have to.

Also you are not responsible for other people’s actions and although it is important that you take care in what you write, you are not responsible for how people react to it – that is in respond to what you were saying about people with EDs. Also you are healthy and what better than seeing the thoughts of a person with a happy healthy attitude to eating? If you know you are healthy then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Looking forward to all the topics you mention. Esp about dealing with people’s comments – as someone who is pretty skinny I am used to people making comments about what I eat and my weight. Although it can be pretty annoying, generally it really doesn’t bother me as I know that I’m ok and that I’m healthy (although it is really annoying sometimes!). My doctor isn’t worried and I’m happy – that’s all that is important!

Re being guarded – I’m way too open! I always regret telling people things about myself and I wish I could be more guarded.

  21. Anonymous says

You already WERE my favorite blog! I didn’t think it was possible for your blog to get better, but you’re proving me wrong.

    -A friend

  22. Audrey says

Although I LOVE all of your recipes, i’m very excited to see your upcoming posts! 🙂 You seem like such an awesome, real person and I admire you! I’m looking forward to outings with friends, because i have that same problem 🙁

  23. neonflamingosandwhitepeacocks says

Hey pretty one, so looking forward to reading more about the “real” Katie!! But of course your recipes will still be my number one choice to turn to when I´m hungry and uninspired 🙂
I love the fact that you cherish food the way you do and are a vibrant and healthy role model for so many of us!

    Have a great day,
    xoxo Mel

P.S.: I stopped blogging @ Urban Girl Scout Cooking and this is my new blog! Please feel invited to take a peek if you like! <3 <3 <3

  24. Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) says

Holy crap Katie…this speaks volumes to me! I am so that girl that keeps her guard up! I just recently started posting pictures of myself and my family. I never want to offend people (with my weight) and I hid myself to keep from being judged! I am so glad to hear others say the same. I feel like I have to be me and people will either like it or not, but that is their choice! Thanks for saying this…it makes me feel more comfortable in doing what I have started doing which is to share my life experiences with my family’s eating restrictions and how our food enhances our lives…not hinders it!

  25. Hela says

    hi katie!!
hopefully this will help you feeling more secure and not worrying about everything a person might think when reading your blog.
i absolutely love it and especially right now, when i´m so busy at uni, i love taking a couple of minutes off to enjoy reading your posts 🙂
you seem to be such a lovely person that, and i´m sure loadsa people will agree here, i´m already looking forward to see more of the real you 🙂
and to answer the question, i am more a showing-people-the-real-me-side 😉 though of course there are a few things i keep for myself until i´m friends with a person.
all the best for you and i really am excited to see what the change on your blog will be like!
    x

  26. Katie says

YAY YAY YAY!!!!!!!!! I am super excited for the new blog change! I am excited to learn more about YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! U are a beautiful, smart, kind, and sweet girl and will be nice to learn more about you and your daily life!

I do draw a line on what I share about my life and what I dont! It’s how I roll! : )

    love ya!!!

  27. Michelle says

I try to always be myself so i guess I do let everyone see the real me. I feel like it will eventually show anyway. I’d rather be hated for who I am then loved for who I’m not 🙂

  28. McKella says

You’re right, protecting everyone’s feelings isn’t your responsibility, so I say onward with the change.
I’ve only been blogging for a few months and I’m careful, but I don’t worry too much about offending anyone with my blog or in real life. I’m pretty much “what you see is what you get” most of the time, inside the blogosphere and in the real world.

  29. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com says

Katie, YES YES YES! this is extremely exciting. I understand where you are coming from in terms of the line between ‘role model’ and ‘regular joe’. even just starting out with blogging i was worried that certain photos might make people feel uneasy.. or if i say “ive got muscle” and someone looks at my body and says “no you dont!” uno what i mean? its like what i see and my family sees, can come off in a different light to people, or if i post pics of me that i find beautiful, people might think im ego-tistical. but letting all those thoughts go and saying “no, this is me, this is MY blog” you must feel free to sharing the parts of you that you love. if people get offended or they start judging themselves in turn, then thats their issue, we cant please everyone and those who are offended are going to get just as offended by the next blog they see. its kind of like when i post about meat, i used to get so scared but then i realized “no, this is the path i chose because its MY path, and those who dont accept me for who i am and only accept me for what i eat, they can leave my blog and stop reading.” im so glad you’ve come to this realization and found the strength. I support you fully 100% and I think a lot of the possible anxiety you may be holding onto will now just melt away because u’ll feel more free to be who you are, bikinis or not hehe 🙂

Aww Katie-girl, I’m SO excited! You are a genuinely fantastic person, and I will read your blog no matter what – I’m looking forward to seeing the “real” you, too!

I’m pretty guarded around strangers, too. But once I warm up, I’m an open book! 🙂 Happy Monday.

  31. Mandiee says

Katie, I am SO proud of you! Not because you are confident in sharing personal things or anything like that, but because you are doing what you want to do. Your blog should be fun for you and not a source of worry. No matter what you post about, if you are being true to yourself and having fun, then you are bound to have readers. Genuine bloggers are something I look for in blogs! Honestly, I’ve missed your posts that were more about your meals (beautifully plated or simply thrown together–that’s real, and that’s what I like) and you vegan journey. I am so excited about all of your future topics. I really do hope you decide to go through with this (though, of course, I support any of your decisions because this is your blog afterall. Heck, you don’t even need my consent! This is all up to you!) As for possibly offending others, don’t worry too much. If they can tell that you don’t mean any harm, I’m sure they will be fine. We all get offended at times and with such a large world out there, it’s hard not to offend at least someone. But don’t worry, hunny. Your a great blogger and you deserve to do what feels right!

    Have a lovely day!
    xox

  32. Chelsey says

Good for you! I am excited to keep reading your blog. It’s hard when something that was meant “for you” becomes public. You seem like a down to earth, sweet girl. I can’t imagine anyone getting upset about writing about the life you lead! If they don’t like it, they shouldn’t read it, right?

I’m typically pretty open with everything. I find it easier to share things with strangers than with people who are closest to me! Maybe there’s a fear of rejection or reprimand from the people I hold dear? Who knows!

  33. Jenny says

My favorite blogs are the ones with a little more personality mixed in with food talk. I think we should all be a little more honest and open so I think the new direction you want to take is admirable and fun. I think I am pretty real in my blog, although I was just telling somebody I do try to position the camera sometimes so that people won’t see my messy house. But I don’t mind telling people it’s messy.

  34. Rachel (tea and chocolate) says

I’m so glad that you feel comfortable making these changes! You should certainly feel free to post what you want and not worry about what people are going think. You’re such a sweet, genuine person and I’m looking forward to hearing more about you.

  35. Leighanna says

I am excited Katie! Its nice to have a real, funny and vegan gal to look up to. Keep being chocolate-covered awesome!

  36. Emily says

I think the blog-author has the right to post whatever he or she wishes, and the reader can choose to read or not to read. I’ll look forward to reading your posts, Katie, even though I already like reading them a lot the way they are! It’s fun to see how blogs evolve and change over time. 🙂

Hope you’re keeping cool in Texas!

  37. Natalie says

hey katie! i began my food blog not too long ago but was struggling with the same thing. for me, most of the reason i was trying not to get too personal on my blog was that i felt like that would make me vulnerable to judgment/criticism – people telling me i ate too much or too little or not too regularly or not too healthily, etc. etc. i didn’t even want to post pictures of myself. but i finally did it. yesterday. i posted a picture of myself, and i think i’m ok with it! i really appreciated this post a lot and related a lot to everything you said, but i am glad that you are going to make this blog more personal – i am really looking forward to your upcoming posts and i think that in general, i have discovered that the whole blog community is sooo supportive and does genuinely embrace each personality, not just the blog persona.

  38. shesarunner says

I am so excited that you are making this change! I read blogs because of the people behind them, not just for recipes. I love your blog because of the vibrant personality behind it, and it shines through, even in short little recipe posts! You just seem like such a kind genuine person and I can’t wait for you to share more of yourself on your blog. I love the blog community for making connections with people, but that requires a little more real and a little less fluff, so it makes me happy when people decide that its okay for them to not always post about food.
As for me, my blog was never a “food blog” or at least not a typical one, I always shared personal things, and as time goes by it becomes even less about food/fitness and even more about life. (And food is a part of life, so it still makes an appearance, but its not the star of the show). I think it is easier for me to share these personal things with total strangers than with people in my real life…I definitely open up more on my blog than I do with my friends. It sounds really strange, but it works for me, and I’ve found that people are incredibly supportive of whatever I write. I know that the same will happen for you!

  39. Sandi says

Hi Katie! All those topics look super interesting and I’m looking forward to reading about them 😀 I have one more question…if you don’t mind sharing, I’ve always been really curious about why you lived in Japan for part of your childhood and what it was like.
I never comment but I LOVE your blog, and I totally share your appreciation of creamy foods 😀

  40. Chris Braunmuller says

Hi, It’s interesting, I’m resding this post and I see a girl filled with fear! Let it go Katie, think positive, see yourself with love! And your life and your blogs life will reflect that.
Katie, if you are healthy, then live it! Don’t hide, that’s what people who are sick do!
Shine your light girl. Be who you are and be okay with it.
It’s interesting that you’re posting this today, because yesterday I read your blog and was thinking, man this is becoming so repetitive! ..
I’m glad you’re starting to realize there’s no need to leave yourself (and by that I don’t mean just your pictures but your opinions, etc) out of your blog (that just makes it kind of… empty!). Otherwise, yes you may not “upset” anyone, but you’re also not interesting, cause… you’re not there!

  41. maxinthegym says

I’m glad you’re going down the path of more personal posts 🙂 I can’t wait to hear more about you and your life in Texas!

I’m amped to read upcoming posts 🙂

  42. L @ Whole Wheat Or Bust! says

Katie I am so excited for the changes coming to your blog. I can relate. I dont know if you have noticed but my first couple months of entries are literally food only. I have only recently began to divulge little bits of my life. I am still nervous. I mean, future employers, friends, and my family can easily see everything I write! I dont want to regret anything later. So I am still trying to figure this all out. And I have noticed that you keep your private life up in wraps, but I never thought that was a bad thing. I totally support your decision to share more! But I would still not say anything that would turn off an employer. But I doubt you would anyway 🙂

  43. Hela says

and btw, i also LOVE reading personal posts 🙂
just made fudge babies again and my flatmate nearly ate them all!!!!!!!!! she made sure i handed her the recipe straight away 😉

  44. Gina G says

aww katie i know i have said before, but i adore you girl! you are a true blue kind of person 🙂 i am also guarded when it comes to a new environment of people, i’m working on it though! Just don’t ever change the person you are for anyone, your wonderful!
    😀

  45. Danielle says

I love the changes you want to make and support you 100%. This is YOUR blog. It should be a personal outlet & a place to share things. Some people go the “blog business” route but I know that’s never been your intention. So, do whatever you want with your posts and I’ll keep reading cuz I love ya 🙂

And never, ever feel hesitant to post a picture of yourself in fear of triggering someone with an ED. You should be *proud* of your body, how well you treat it, and all that it can do!

  46. Lauren (Clean Eats in the Dirty South) says

this is exciting! you are who you are, and you shouldn’t hide that. but you’re so considerate of other people, that is so encouraging and inspiring!
can’t wait for all of the changes. i love your blog and i’m sure the real-er version is going to be just as fabulous as the versions that have been before! 😀

  47. Katie says

Your blog is one of my favorite reads, your food is delicious and healthy and you are as cute and funny as can be without being pretentious or preachy. You make healthy yummy vegan food look like something regular old lazy absentminded me could do (a working mother who is also in college). So I look forward to your posts. And to add about being personal, I don’t ever wear makeup (unless it’s a special occasion where I will be photographed) and I pretty much live in sweats (except at work). I feel like hey, this is me, and not everyone is going to like me, but some people will and you can’t waste your time with those who don’t- life’s too short! So go you! 🙂

  48. Caroline says

    Goo Katie!

The topics you are planning sound really interesting, and I can’t wait to read them. Friends occasionally give me a hard time about trying to eat healthfully, and I can’t even imagine trying to eat vegan at parties where you have no clue what you’ll get.

I stopped reading a few blogs (even…gasp….the famous ones) because they lack personality. I would rather read a blog I don’t completely agree with but that is unique and interesting…then I get to learn about someone who rocks a very different lifestyle.

And honestly, you are one of the sweetest, most intelligent, most interesting people I “know” (because I suppose I don’t actually know you, even though I have read for a long time)…so I’d love to read more about your lifestyle. I won’t ask for your SSN, though.

Oh, one of my favorite things about your blog is your impeccable grammar 🙂 But I’d expect nothing less from a girl with perfect SAT scores.

  49. Kate says

I am really looking forward to getting a glimpse of the “real you” and not just this one facet. I was actually thinking today when your named popped on FB (to say hi!) that I think you seem like a really nice girl and I wonder what you’re other interests are and how you spend your time outside of the kitchen and on the computer.

Really really looking forward to it!

I think that showing your true self on a blog (or anywhere) in life is important. I try my best to be authentic with my thoughts and opinions and aim to not hurt others but provided constructive feedback when warranted.

  50. glutenfreemuse says

I am extremely open about EVERYTHING! Sometimes I feel that I need a little more guarding of my feelings because, yes, it might make people uncomfortable. However, I think that if you really want your readers to connect, they will want to know you aren’t perfect, and that is OK! I blog everything from what I did that day, to what I ate, to how I am feeling. If I feel depressed, my blog should be the place I can go write about it. If that offends or upsets people, they really don’t have to read it, but I think that it usually makes people realize that they aren’t alone! Sometimes you feel sad or stressed or you need to eat ice cream 😉 It’s all gravy, baby!

Take the leap! I can guarantee we (the readers) won’t be disappointed 🙂

    ~Alyssa

  51. Damjana says

I’m all ears (and eyes) to see what’s coming. You’re such a sweetheart indeed! (and you’ve always been it)
I usually tell only fragments from my life, I don’t like sharing too much of myself.
On the other side I love listening to interesting people (like you).
    fudge babies have siblings, yay!

  52. veganhomemade says

Looking forward to continuing to read! I’ll be interested to see what you have to say on the topic of meat eating boys 🙂 People look at me like I’m insane when they find out that I’m vegan but my boyfriend, who I live with, is not even close!

  53. Emma says

I for one can’t wait for the change! I love your blog as it is butthiz will make it even more fun to read! I especially can’t wait to read the posts you mentioned above! =D

  54. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

Good for you, Katie! I am excited to see the changes…as I feel you have so much to GIVE that is totally over and beyond recipes. As I have been posting about for quite some time. I really dont read “food blogs” for the food. I read them b/c i develop a connection w/ the person and that’s what keeps me going back. Can’t wait to see what you’re gonna share!

  55. Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says

I’m already loving the more personal aspect of your blog 🙂 I would LOVE to know more about you, you’re such a sweetheart!

I think it’s OK to be guarded while posting your life in internet, I was too and even though I don’t have nearly as much readers as you do I’m a bit cautious too. I have no problem showing people pictures of my previous disaster hairstyles or sending some nice group pictures of me and my friends / family but I don’t want to give too much either. Especially information regarding my job will always be anonymous, I will never reveal the name of the company I’m working for even though most of my readersa foreign 🙂

In the beginning it was weird to tell everyone about my days and what I have been up to, I would never have imagined that anyone would be interested in my daily life 😀

  56. Elizabeth Jarrard says

oh katie-you’re so great!! I’m so excited you’re making this more personal-you shouldn’t worry about what other’s think and guard yourself just because you are afraid of them. Let you shine through! if someone doesn’t like it, they don’t have to read it! but i can’t wait to see these changes unfold-you’re wonderful!
happy first day of summer! here’s to another new start!

I’m glad to hear you’re making this decision. While it’s one thing to be considerate, it’s another to change who you are, especially for strangers, and especially when you’re not doing anything wrong. Thanks for being brave–perhaps those who are offended by your photos and imperfect life will find inspiration to be themselves, and real, as well.

    A+

  58. Katharina says

!!! I am so excited for this 😀 I seriously can’t wait. I totally understand where you worries are coming from, but I’m glad that you realize that you should not be ashamed either. Part of life is realizing that we can’t make everyone happy. Then when you realize that, you just let go and live your life to the fullest! I always pass this quote on because I think it’s incredible true and just resonates with me, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those that mind don’t matter, and those that matter don’t mind” Wise words from Dr. Suess himself 😀

    XOXO

  59. Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

I’m excited! Your blog was incredible as it was but it’ll be nice to have one out there talking about real issues we all need to be aware of. And to answer your question, I let people know the real me straight from the get go. Otherwise they could be friends with a fakey version of you. That being said, I don’t blurt out all my personal info the first time we say hello..but you know what I mean. 🙂

  60. Crystal (That Vegan Blog) says

I’ve been a long-time reader of your blog (I used to have the Vivacious Vegan blog), perhaps since the inception (or darn close). You are such a sweet person, always looking out for other people’s feelings but if they don’t like what’s on your blog they can choose not to read it. I’m really looking forward to the new direction of your blog and “getting to know you better.”

  61. Jessica says

I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog as it was, but I am very excited to see that you are going to be sharing a more personal side in addition to your recipes!

In response to your question, I’m not very guarded about my personal life – in person or in my blog. But at the same time, I don’t have nearly the readership you do (mostly just my family), so I don’t feel as guarded when I write as I might if I knew a lot more strangers were reading. It takes a lot of confidence to share more of yourself with so many readers, I think it’s awesome that you are changing up your blog a bit!

  62. Emilia says

I’m loving the post– Def. true; I agree with a MAJORITY of the things you said. Yay, girl! I think a lot of people who have obessions with food do associate with eating disorders and it can def. be triggering, so it’s good to not add to that. But honestly, I don’t think you are. You’re posting normal, healthy, scrumptious recipes that aren’t triggering. Trust me 🙂

    Check out my blog: http://namastegurl.blogspot.com/

  63. Sarah says

Since your being honest, i think i will be too!

I used to check your blog daily, and then it turned to more so weekly. Because of the reasons you posted. It just got ‘boring’, the recipes are great, but i like blogs where i feel like i can connect and get insight to that persons life, ya know? So im very glad to hear of the new changes! =)

  64. chocolate-covered katie says

    Sandi,
    Hello fellow creamy-food lover! 🙂

I lived in Japan (and China and The Philippines and England) because my crazy dad is in the international insurance business, so he gets sent all over the world.
Japan is AMAZING! They are so kid-friendly there, always cooing over their children. We were pretty spoiled, not just by our parents, but by all the Japanese! My life was filled with chocolate-filled koala bears, trips to local shrines, and Hello Kitty EVERYthing.

  65. *Andrea* says

amazing post katie! i love your blog so much..i can tell you are so genuine and healthy and although i am recovering from an ed i NEVER feel upset from your blog because you are such a great ideal for me to strive for… eating foods you enjoy the taste of, especially chocolate and veggies 😉 , and doing what makes you happy in life, caring for animals and designing cute cupcakes and charity cards and running, etc.

so glad to see more into your life! the topics sound very cool:)

  66. chocolate-covered katie says

    healthyhelper,
It definitely took me way more than a few weeks to start to feel like I was part of a community, not just talking to air! I think the BIGGEST thing you can do is comment, comment, comment on other blogs. Don’t just comment once on a particular blog; keep on commenting. It might take a while, but soon the blogger (and other commenters) will keep seeing your name pop up and start to remember you.
I commented a lot on other blogs when I first started out. Nowadays, I don’t comment much anymore because it was just taking up too much time; there are SO many amazing blogs out there! But if you’re just starting out, that’s a good way to get your name out there. Otherwise, no one will know your blog exists.
    Good luck!! 🙂

  67. healthyhelper says

hey katie! I love your blog and about three months ago I started a blog of my own. I would love to have a following as huge as yours and i am wondering how you acquired such a large following? i think it is great!

    thanks! 🙂

    Kaila (healthyhelper.wordpress.com)

  68. Anonymous says

Are you CCK or CCV???? (I mean, I know you’re both…) I was thinking you were phasing out the CCV. love your blog!

  69. Chocolate-Covered Katie says

    Anonymous,
*Sigh* I don’t know what to do! I think CCV sounds more catchy, but now that my blog is called “chocolate-covered katie” I’m afraid people won’t know what “CCV” means. I explain it in my faq, but most people probably don’t read that page… Identity crisis! 😕
    What do you think?
Maybe I am making too big a deal out of it LOL :).

  70. Mariah says

    Hi Katie,

I just started reading your blog and I love it. But, I’m also going to be honest, I couldn’t help thinking that you just seemed too *perfect.* From your extravagant daily meals to your perfectly photo-shopped photos of yourself, I was starting to think, geez does this chick ever have a bad hair day? But after reading this post, I definitely understand why you portrayed yourself in that way. You are so brave to let the real you shine through. Props to yoU!!!

  71. Chocolate-Covered Katie says

    Mariah,
Haha yes, I definitely have bad hair days! My friends get annoyed with me; I am very bad about de-tagging myself from photos :(. I’m trying (and succeeding, little by little) to learn that one doesn’t need to be perfect all the time! No one wants to be friends with someone who’s afraid to let her hair down and live a little! 🙂

  72. spoonfulofsugarfree says

You can do it Katie! I would be super excited to learn more about you because I love reading your posts every single day!

I am also the guarded type, EXTREMELY careful about showing too much of myself and what not. I don’t think my readers even know what region of the country I’m from! I should probably start sharing a little more. I know I would feel better doing it because there are some things in my posts I leave out because I’m scared…and then the post isn’t as good!

Anyway, Good luck overcoming your fear! Can’t wait to read more!

  73. Carbzilla says

Hi, my lovely! Just wanted to say Hi and Happy Summer! Sorry I haven’t commented in forever. Lots of cr*p going down here, but I’ll be sure to check in now. I’m so proud of you!

  74. Katherine: What About Summer? says

I don’t mind sharing personal stuff but I am pretty quiet and don’t volunteer a lot of info. I guess I’m more transparent about my struggles on my blog than I am anywhere else.

You sprinkle some chocolate back into that blog of personality!

  75. Kelly says

Aw, way to be brave, Katie! Y’know, I don’t always comment on your “regular” posts; I think I more commonly comment on your confession/personal-type posts, and I always end up saying things like, “Don’t feel bad about commenting less/what other people think/etc!” But really, I’m like you – very sensitive and worried about hurting others’ feelings, and sort of unwilling to be really personal and open at first. So I suppose I shouldn’t give advice and then not take it myself. 🙂

That said… I’m excited about your new blog directions! I think you have lots of wonderful stories and insights to share, and I’m looking forward to hearing them.

  76. Julia says

Katie, you’re seriously one of the most compassionate and caring people I “know” lol. Your blog is nowhere NEAR boring, but I’m still looking forward to these new posts… particularly, the ones dealing with peer comments and eating healthfully at parties. I’m going off to college this fall, so these posts will REALLY come in handy.

That being said, take a chance to pat yourself on the back… you have created such an AMAZMING blog. Don’t let the other comments and critiques undermine your outstanding efforts. Keep up the incredible work… I can’t wait to read your new posts!

  77. Kelsey @ CleanTeenKelsey says

Katie, this is so wonderful! I’m very, very exciting for the new changes and I think they’ll be great.

I completely understand your concerns about what people think. I find I worry about that too much, and it’s something I’ve been trying to work on. I think it’s wonderful that you’re letting your guard down.

It takes me a little bit longer to warm up to strangers, as well. I don’t care if my closest friends see me looking nasty, but my blog readers? No, thank you. Maybe one of these days I won’t care so much. 🙂

  78. Allison says

It would be wonderful to have you post more “real” stuff! There are many blogs I visit just for recipes and beautiful pictures of food but yours is one that I always enjoy reading because of your fantastic outlook on life. You could probably post about doing laundry and make it entertaining and enjoyable. (Maybe you might not want to run with that idea…). As for the not posting pictures of yourself because you are afraid of offending someone, I think it is important to see that healthy people do not always look the same. I live probably 90% a really healthy life. I exercise, I eat tons of veggies, don’t eat fast food, don’t drink soda and cook most of my food myself but I have 23 years of unhealthy lifestyle to rid my body of. When I make a comment about eating chocolate or bake sweets of any kind I get comments from people in my life asking whether or not I should really eat them. As though my not having a perfectly toned body means that I have to be on a constant diet and that I will never be able to eat a cinnamon roll ever again. I wish more people had a realistic view of what healthy people looked like. Rant over!

    My point is: You Rock!

  79. Gaby says

Way to go Katie!! I’m looking forward to these changes and am inspired by your willingness to be open and be yourself no matter what.
I can be way too self conscious, especially when it comes to body image. I feel like I’m judged all the time! I really want to learn to accept myself and accept that I’m the only one that needs to be ok with myself. I also have a hard time sticking up for my healthy habits, choices and beliefs. I try to be really open to everyone else’s ideas and not judge or say anything that may go against someone else’s beliefs, but they definitely do not have that courtesy with me! I get attacked a lot by those closest to me, and it’s time I stick up for myself!
Hopefully now I can pick up on some of your bravery 🙂

  80. Pure2Raw Twins says

Girl you know we will keep reading no matter what 😉 We love your blog and you! I think what you do with your blog will be great.

  81. aimee says

i am proud of you! i went through the same thing with my blog, beginning it as my ‘green’ blog and realizing that if i didn’t start opening up about Me, i was doing myself a disservice by not showing a little of myself. through the process, it’s helped me learn more about myself and be less afraid of being vulnerable. something about the process has allowed me to be less afraid of saying what i really feel and take more risks – not in an exhibitionist way but rather trusting those around you, readers, friends, etc., to listen and be open to what you have to say. you don’t have to disclose any confidences, it’s about opening the chocolate covered heart and soul 🙂 you have much to offer and it’s been great to read your writing thus far, and i know we are all happy to see that you continue to share. happy solstice!

  82. Marianne says

I may be one of the more “guarded” bloggers, but I choose to be that way, because the focus of my blog is not a recount of every event that happens in my life. I know alot of bloggers do so, and that’s cool, but it’s not what I’m going for. Always good to have that “air of mystery”, ya know? That being said – you should always do what you want with your blog, and I’ll totally read – you got sass that I like 😀 And you like hockey.

  83. Jo says

You have so much confidence and spirit Katie, people will be drawn to your blog no matter what you write about! I am a very guarded person, in everything I do, and am very jealous of your ability to be so open.

And I have NEVER considered your writing to be “fluff”. You just keep doing your thing 🙂

  84. Sheila's a Lady says

What the heck??? I think the commenter a few above me has some nerve to say your blog “just got ‘boring’” especially since it doesn’t seem like she comments very often, only to say negative things.

    How is that acceptable?

I think your blog is one of the most creative I read, even recently: Hug a Fat, Vita-Mix ice cream trick, homemade chocolate with a funny name, I could go on. And on and on.
So no, I don’t think your blog is fluff at all! But, nonetheless, I’m excited for the changes.

  85. Cynthia K says

Good morning Katie! Very excited for you after reading your latest State-Of-The-Chocolate-Covered-Union address–looking forward to more fun posts! Have a fantastic day!

(Gosh, three exclamation points and I’ve only had one cup of coffee so far. I’m going to have to turn it down before I head to work.) 🙂

  86. Kate says

    I agree with Sheila.
I never would have categorized your blog as boring before, but that doesn’t mean I’m not extremely excited to see what you have in store for the future! 🙂

  87. MsAlex says

I love your blog now but I love a change, and a bit more of *you* can only be a good thing!

I’m not very down with the *openess* on my blogger blog, that one is used more for my fitness and food rambling, I tend to save the real/drama/ohnoes! posts for my Livejournal – as it’s friends only so I know who’s reading (and the other blog got created as I was scared I was boring all my LJ friends TO DEATH with posts about my food love!).

That said, I’m always looking for new friends on both blogs to people who have similar interests to me, so I’m always willing to open up but only to the right people.

  88. danielle_veg says

Ha! I love it. You bring up a great point: endless recipes do grow tedious after a while (because, let’s face it, I’m never going to make 90% of all of the blog recipes I like!). I’m really looking forward to learning more about the REAL Katie! I’m glad that you’re taking your blog in a direction that makes you happy.

  89. Willow says

Katie! It’s me, the Anonymous that asked you about your names. I like both CCK and CCV for different reasons. CCV identifies you as a vegan (which I like), but it also could scare potential readers away simply because they aren’t vegans. CCK doesn’t identify you as a vegan, but it does emphasize your chocolate covered ways… and your name.. which may go along with your new changes of becoming more personal. Ahhh I can’t decide!!

  90. Emma says

Hey Katie! I just started following your blog a few weeks ago and have enjoyed it since I first stumbled upon your blog from my google reader (gotta love recommended reads!). Since that time, I started a blog of my own, and although I’ve only been posting for approx. 2 days (so I’m a total newb haha), I get where you’re coming from as far as the dilemma of what to post/what not to post about personal things. Anywho, what I’ve been meaning to say is that as one of many who visit everyday, I feel your blog posts are very entertaining and lively and that’s why I decided to follow your blog. I think that as long as you feel comfortable with what you’re sharing, go for it! If you’re ever unsure about something, or you’re not ready to share at a certain time, no worries- we’ll still be here to support you!

  91. Chocolate Covered Katie says

    Willow,
Haha someone else *just now* asked about the CCV meaning. I think four people have asked in the last 2 days…
I don’t want to confuse anyone, so I think I’m going to have to make the change–for good–to CCK. I’m with you, though, in that I liked the V because Veganism is so important to me.
CCV will always have a special place in my heart, and obviously I’m not changing my status as a vegan. But it’s just too confusing for people who haven’t known me from the beginning. Eh, a name is just a bunch of letters anyways!

  92. Vanilla says

You care too much about others!! You know, people with ED (myself inclueded) will have struggles, no matter where they came from. THEY need to work on this. Not you. 🙂

I’ll be honest. When I first saw you, I was thinking ”I wish I was as naturally thin as her”. But then I realized you were more than just ”thin”. You were happy, wonderful, caring, an awesome cook/baker, yada yada… x)

So I changed my mind. Now I’m thinking ”I want to live life to the fullest just like her”. 🙂

    *More crazy recipes!! Yay!! 😀

    xoxo

  93. Foxy says

Well done Katie! I look forward to following the new CCK blog with relish! And dont let those cowardly anon comments get you down- you are very beautiful. As someone who also falls on the skinny side I am tired of all the references to it- you almost feel like you have to apologise for being healthy and in shape-or that one only be sexy with curves.

Oh…and keep those choc recipes coming 😉

  94. caronae says

Yay! I love real blogs because we all have personalities outside of what we eat or how often we run. I’m excited to learn more about you. I try to keep my blog real and honest because I think that honesty about what we are going through — physically, mentally, socially, whatever — is important for our health!

Can’t wait to learn more about CCK!

  95. Aoife@ Adventures In Veg says

Good on you Katie!! I’m a long-time lurker and I love your attitude – you just keep doing what you’re doing and it sounds like you’re really excited about this change to the blog. Just keep being yourself and you’ll be doing good. Can’t wait to read the new posts! 🙂

  96. michellemusesraw says

I adore your blog and your mix of humility/realness (is that a word) that comes through in each post. Be real, be you – we’ll all keep reading!

ps – as a fellow Texan (after some years in Minnesota), I’m reminded of the summertime uniform of swimsuits and flip flops. I’ve already worn out one suit in 3 months.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

      Michellemusesraw,
Thank you so much for your sweet comment! And LOL at one point, my dad almost got transferred to MN. At the time, I asked him, “How will we be able to survive, going from 100 degrees to -30?!” 🙂

  97. Serena says

I am so glad you are doing this! Your future topics look GREAT. 😀 I can’t wait for the dating “meat-n-potatoes” boys one. 🙂 heh..

  98. rebekah (clarity in creation.) says

girl – we all obviously have been drawn to you for your hilarious personality and quirks… why feel like you have to hide that? it’s why we read in the first place!

i’ve always been a fan of your honesty and loyalty to yourself – never stop that!

your body is 100% healthy and natural. don’t ever feel shame because it doesn’t look like someone elses. i hear what you mean about being sensitive to the eating disordered, but seeing a strong, healthy girl proud of who she is will be the best thing for those who are struggling!
