Last night was guys’ night!
Sometimes I feel more comfortable hanging with the guys. My sister’s like that too. We sometimes joke that we have more guy friends than girls. Guys are much more easy-going.
Pictured above: a buttery mountain of polenta, surrounded by Wally’s Vegan Chili
How brave am I to serve tofu to a bunch of college guys?
I snapped a really quick photo of my plate, because how many 20-something guys do you know who would understand the food blogging thing? Although I don’t go out of my way to hide it, very few of my guy friends know about my blog. Or, at least, they haven’t ever told me that they know about it.
In any case, we had lots of fun. The guys gobbled up Wally’s Vegan Chili, leaving me no leftovers. If there’s one good thing about school starting up again, it’s that I get to see some friends I hadn’t seen all summer.
Henry loves it when the guys come over, too, because it means he’s not completely outnumbered by girls. (Oh let’s be honest, Henry just likes it when anyone pays attention to him.) Below, he cuddles up to one of the five guys who came over.

Your night tomorrow sounds perfect – gossip girl!!
I wish i was more of a guy-girl, but I just don’t have any guy friends 🙁
Marina says
I always got along better with guys!
But I do love mother-daughter nights 🙂
Enjoy your time with your mom!
abby says
yeah, sometimes i like hanging out with guys. but i dunno. i think i’m more self-conscious around them, so i can’t be easygoing. it’s dumb, but i always feel like they’re judging me, even though that’s my own perception.
Leslie says
Henry looks so cute there. And I had to laugh, because my little doggie is the only male in the family too. He feels very left out.
Glad you had fun with your guy friends! 🙂
Mary says
Oh I can totally relate! I know that guys appreciate curves, so I don’t have as much “fat talk” inside my head when I’m with them. And I also know that they don’t like too much makeup. Plus, if you give them a beer and a good football game, they are guaranteed not to even notice you! Sometimes that’s not a bad thing ;).
Sarahishealthy says
I used to have a lot of guy friends in high school, but now it seems like they’re all off and married, so it would be weird to still hang out. I don’t think their wives would like that very much LOL!
jaclyn@todayslady says
I love that the guys at tofu!!
Hanging out with guys is definitely more laid back. I’m lucky because my close girlfriends are laid back too!!
Cant wait to hear about girls night!!
Inspired says
Mmmm I love chili. Usually I eat it in the cold winter months. But hey, why not try some in the summer? And good call on not telling the boys about the blog. I definitely don’t think they’d understand such things!
Kelly says
Guy friends are fun! I went from having all of one close guy friend in high school to having a majority of close guy friends in college. It was quite the reversal and the adjustment for me! I have to say, though, that as much as I enjoyed spending time with the dudes, all they ever wanted to do was watch ESPN and eat Doritos. Like… for hours at a time. I don’t really like watching TV, so that sometimes got a little tedious. On the other hand, most of my guy friends were also pretty sporty, so when it was nice out (i.e. from mid-may to mid-October; thanks Minnesota!) we could play tennis and frisbee and run around in the arboretum.
Aw… now I miss college!
Also, like Bianca, my (girl)friends and I do enjoy a good burp. I am a burping champ, incidentally. 😛
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hahahaha yeah, I let them go off on their own when it’s football season. There’s only so many hours in a row of Dallas Cowboy-watching I can take!
Angela says
For some reason, I’m always too lazy to make my own chili. Especially since Amy’s chili is so convenient and also happens to taste good. Have you tried her black bean one? I really recommend it! 🙂
KeepItSweet says
I enjoy both guy and girl friends in different ways, but sometimes working with guys is easier than working with girls.
Kiki says
Hey Katie 🙂
I don’t have that many guy friends, but the ones I do have are hilarious and much easier to deal with than my girlfriends! But I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t go for tofu chili, haha. Hope you’re having a great day! x
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hehe well, it helps that the guy who made up the recipe is an ironman! So they can’t use the excuse of “eww, wimpy tofu!” 😉
rebecca lustig says
i feel like i can ALWAYS be myself around the guys. i love it. theres no caddyness, no comparisons, no judgments. they like me for me!
enjoy the day 🙂
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I SOOO agree! 🙂
Happy Thursday, sweet girl!
vegangal says
hi katie, i would love to hang out with the guys and maybe they’d judge me less than a girl would and i wouldnt have to wear makeup and could be myself around them but i guess im just too shy i dont really have any guy friends, well except for my cousin. maybe someday i will be more outgoing like you and can be myself more with my friends, i hope so!
xoxo
Danielle says
I know what you mean about hanging out with guys- they’re a lot more laid back! Not that I don’t like girl time too
And you *are* very brave for serving tofu lol. That’s awesome they ate it without bias!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Eh, they’re guys. If the choice is “eat tofu or get nothing” they’ll pick the tofu. 😉
Every time!
Caroline says
Mmm…you’ve just given me a total cornbread craving! So glad the guys approved of the tofu…I think that it’s delicious when pressed enough.
I can’t wait for school, either. Happy packing (speaking of…)!
Caroline says
And I agree that guys are sometimes much more down-to-earth than girls…sometimes, I just don’t trust girls.
Lorin says
Do you share an apartment with other roommates or do you live at home?
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
I’ve had roommates in the past, but this year I don’t.
Erika @ Health and Happiness in LA says
I definitely get along better with guys. I have to confess I don’t understand girls all that well a lot of the time (especially not in groups) and I hate when people talk about others behind their back. Girls do that way more than guys.
And everyone loves chili, I find it to be a pretty good crowd-pleaser.
Laura says
After growing up with two brothers, I definitely have more girl friends. I much prefer girls company:) xx
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Hehehe I only had/have a sister… I always wanted a brother!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I actually prefer to hang out with guys over girls..mainly cause most girls around here are really girly-girls and I’m more of the sporty type. Plus, drama’s not cool and that’s usually the case with a lot of girls haha. I sound like a total basher, don’t get me wrong.. I still have female friends! It’s just that guys are typically more chill. 😛
erinsloves says
That chili looks YUM..and I’m dying to try polenta!
Guys are just so much less drama and just so darn funny!
Katelyn says
I think I have more guy friends than girl friends too, and I always joke that boys are better than girls 🙂 Hahah, they really are so much more easygoing! As I always say, boys are way more direct and chill. No questions asked
Bianca- Vegan Crunk says
Most of my friends are dudes too. But they’re mostly gay dudes, so maybe that’s different. And my girlfriends aren’t really girly at all. And we all burp with no shame. 🙂 The chili looks damn tasty. BTW, I wrote my post for you last night. I’m gonna email it in a bit.
Justine says
It does seem a little easier hanging out with guys. I met my boyfriend through a guy friend. 🙂
I love girls nights (read: Mom & daughter nights)! I get to have a Girl’s weekend this weekend! 🙂
The chili looks great! I cant wait to make that during sport’s season!
40apples says
I love my girl friends, but you’re so right – hangin’ with the guys is soooo much fun and easy goin. It’s refreshing!
monicanelsonfitness says
I am so one of the guys! I was such a tom boy growing up and then competeted in sports so that pretty much summed it all up. I hate to sound harsh here and I do have a great group of ladies that are my best friends, but sometimes it is nice to be with the guys so you don’t have to hear all the insecurities that some woman come with. Like “Am I fat?, do I look Fat?, Does my hair look good?, or “I wish I was…” blah blah plus the endless gossiping of other woman, which is so LAME(not my lady friends of course!). We all have insecuirites, Don’t get me wrong, but the last time I hung with the guys it was all about having fun and not comparing one another.:) This chili sounds amazing…
spoonfulofsugarfree says
Yeah I feel comfortable when I play sports with guys, but I feel waaay more comfortable talking to girls. Girls just have a lot more intelligent things to say than guys. Atleast young guys, old men (like my dad and grandpa) have much more intelligent and interesting things to say!!!!!!!!!!
BroccoliHut says
Way to master the discreet food blog photography–there are guys in my life that would never understand the blog thing either.
Caitlin says
I swam on a co-ed swim team growing up, so having lots of guy friends was mandatory–as was having a lot of girl friends. I feel really lucky that I enjoy the company of both guys and girls, and don’t feel like one group is more laid-back or compassionate than the other. In fact, I always watch Gossip Girl with my best guy friend!
Chocolate-Covered Katie says
Oh gosh, I need a Gossip-Girl-watching guy friend!! Jealous! 😉
Ali - YumVeggieBurger says
oh yes, I definitely get along better with guys and have more guy friends than girl friends!
however, I think the majority of my friends who write their own blogs also happen to be guys… funny!
Marianne says
I am definitely one who likes to hang with my guy friends. Maybe because I’m just not girlie to begin with? Heck, I’ll even burp with them…and maybe even out burp them if challenged 😉
