Cinnamon-Raisin Breakfast Pudding

Do you resemble a certain member of your family?

dadnmeclaypit

dadnmeclaypit1

But first, another shot from dinner at the Clay Pit.

And a close up, because when I was looking at this photo, I saw something that made me stop short. It’s super-obvious who takes after whom in our family: I am my mom and my sister is my dad. (Actually, my sister is my cousin Julie. Those two could be twins. But that’s another story.) I never thought I looked anything like my dad. He is short, dark-skinned, and built for power, while I’m lanky and paler-than-pale, without exhibiting a single physical trace of his Italian heritage. But lo and behold, we do share something: My dad and I have the same eyebrows that curve in the exact same place.

Hmmm, well maybe that just means we share a common way of posing for photos. But in any case, I thought it was cool to catch a hint that perhaps I wasn’t dropped off by the stork after all.

By the way, does anyone else sense the need for a Friends reference? Joey: My identical hand twin! The person whose hands are exactly like mine! This thing is a gold mine! Now you’re all going to think I’m strange for putting so much stock—an entire paragraph’s worth—into the subject of eyebrows. Hey, I never claimed to be normal. Normal is so boring.

Something else my dad and I share: a love of chewy breakfast grains (He’s a huge steel-cut oatmeal fan, but I’m quickly selling him on the wonders of bulgur beyond the world of tabbouleh.) When he offered to make me breakfast on Monday morning (my birthday morning), I jumped at the chance. After a glorious run (It’s finally cooling off; no more 90-degree mornings!), I came home to find breakfast waiting for me. And what a breakfast it was!

Dad made three servings of Cinnamon-Raisin Breakfast Pudding. (I added the flowers.) He’d better watch out; I might have to start asking him to make me breakfast every day!  (Well, maybe not. I enjoy concocting my own breakfast experiments. But sometimes it’s nice to be waited on.) When I came in from my run, Momma Bear, Pappa Bear, and CCK Bear sat down to a perfect family breakfast, after which it was time to open presents. The breakfast was delicious, the present-opening was exciting (duh), but the best part was spending quality time with the people I love.  If you had my parents you’d want to hang out with them too. They are two incredible people (and I’m not just saying that to suck up to Dad so he’ll make me breakfast again).

Cinnamon Breakfast Pudding

    • 1 serving cooked bulgur or oatmeal (See: How to Cook Bulgur)
    • 1/8 cup (or more) Silk creamer
    • sweetener to taste
    • generous shake of cinnamon
    • handful of raisins
    • optional: chopped walnuts

Put the cooked bulgur (or other grain) in your blending gadget (such as a Magic Bullet short cup). Add everything else. Blend! Now add in the raisins and optional walnuts.

I LOVE spending time with my family. They’re some of my favorite people in this whole entire world and I definitely enjoy being with them. I think that’s one of the huge benefits of homeschooling: spending time with the people you love. 🙂

  2. Marina says

I am sooo craving that bowl of oatmeal right now :))
I look like my mom more I guess, but I have some features from my dad. Legs specially 😀
Can’t wait to spend some time with my mom, I haven’t seen here in more than a month!

  3. Katharina says

Mmm that breakfast sounds so delicious! I had breakfast the other day using rice and soaking it overnight in almond milk with cinnamon and raisins. I love how they plump up. Then I added some other yummy toppings in the morning 🙂 Like a diced apple yummm. Such a comforting combo.

And it’s funny to see the similarities we have between our parents and just family members in general. Some times I wonder how much I look like my dad’s side of the family (I don’t talk to my biological father so I have no idea). But anyhow, I LOVE spending time with my family. Whenever I go bacck home sometimes I’ll find my self wanting to hang around them more than with my friends lol. I guess it’s that unbreakable bond, you know?

    XOXO

I have two family members I look like! It’s weird because I don’t think they look alike but somehow I look like both lol, my cousin on my mom’s side and my aunt on my dad’s side. Figure that one out!

I also love love love spending time with my family! When you come from a great family how can you not! Everyone’s family has their quirk so embrace it and love them unconditionally, even if they look like the long lost aunt from a 1/2 brother of an in-law 😉

    P.S. those oats looks delish!

  5. Alisa - Frugal Foodie says

That is too cute that you picked that out!

Because my whole family is short (and my sister and I are both quite petite with blondish hair and blue eyes), people think we look alike. When you really look at us, we look different just like any other family. I look more like my dad, but he has a beard so it is hard to tell! I think this post is really fun actually and like that you aren’t normal!

  6. Kayla says

I love my family! We have so much fun together! I have my dad’s eyebrows, too! Haha. I also have my dad’s height, build and personality.

  7. dragonmamma/naomi says

When I was little my brother tried to freak me out by telling me I was adopted. I didn’t believe him for one moment because I was so obviously a member of the family. Every one of us looks like a perfect blend of two other family members.

  8. Katie says

I’m obsessed with my family – they’re my favorite people on earth to spend time with. My mom and I are practically twins…alike in every way – looks, personality, profession, temperament. It’s a little crazy.

Also, I think you and your dad have similar noses…yours is smaller and more girly, of course, but similar!

  9. mckella says

I come from a very tight-knit family and I love spending time with them! I even live with my aunt and uncle and I nanny my cousins with a co-nanny, who is also my cousin.
And I look like my dad, but I walk like my mom and I have a lot of her mannerisms.

  10. Betherann says

I think you and your dad share eyes, too!

As for me, I’ve been asked if my mom and are sisters. Personally, I think I look more like my dad, but not really either one of them. My brother and I look alike, but not really either one of our parents.

  11. 40apples says

    How sweet of your dad!
I LOOOVE spending time with my family – they make me laugh, we have our own dinner (and dance) parties, they’re my travel buddies… I just love hanging out with them. The absolute #1 worst thing about living on the east coast is that I’m not near them. It’s a tragedy 🙁

People who know or are looking at both my parents say I look like a perfect 50/50 combo of them. But I get “you look like your mom” alllll the time too. (guess it’s good I’m not more often compared to a man? ha) But I do have one aunt who I apparently have an uncanny resemblance to.. not just appearance but behavior. So I’m told, at least!

  12. Kristie says

First and most most most important: HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!! I’m so sorry this is delayed. Slap on my wrist for that one! I hope it was fabuloso x100 though xoxo

As for fam, I adore them! My parents and my brother are by far some of the closest people to me and I definitely enjoy their company. They’re pretty awesome people. I think I resemble my mom and my dad in different ways but neither one of them to any super obvious extent.

That’s so darn sweet of your dad to make you breakfast. I’m with you though, I wouldn’t be able to have someone make me breakfast ALL the time, one of my favourite parts of the morning is breakfast prep haha. But it’s definitely a really nice treat when it happens once in a blue moon!

  13. elk says

Hand twins, I remember that, tee hee!
    Happy birthday 🙂
One of my favourite “oh how to make the hours go by” games when I worked in a bookshop was to match up which of a child’s characteristics belonged to which parent. There was always a good supply of parents and children on a Saturday..
I always find it slightly odd, in a good way, when you see something in a parent and you realise that’s where you get it from. It always amuses me that my sister’s feet are replicas of my mum’s, with shorter toes and smaller nails, while mine are slightly smaller versions of my dad’s. We both have straight long toes and wide nails…and even have the same slight curve in the same toe.
I agree with people about the tip of your nose being like your dad’s. It’s really sweet!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

There was a nurse at the hospital, when my dad was born, who guessed which baby belonged to which mom. She was so mad at my grandma, because she matched her up with a little girl… it was the first time the nurse had ever been wrong!

  14. EmbraceYourSkin says

    Identical hand twin! Ahhhh! 🙂
I look identical to my mom in our faces, we are just built differently. I have learned to love it!

  15. spoonfulofsugarfree says

Oh I love my family! We spend Soooo much time together! And I look a lot like my mom! People are always telling me 😛 Some of my moms friends mistake me for her sometimes

  16. thedelicateplace says

i love spending time with my family! i am a perfect mix of both. i’m short like my mom and have her nose/eyes but my mouth, eyebrows and lean build are from my dad 🙂

  17. brazilgrrl says

That breakfast looks wonderful!!!!!! I’ve been looking for ways to incorporate different grains into my breakfasts (so far I’ve only had various oatmeals =D). I’ll definitely try that sometime!!!!! As for resembling someone, I’m a pretty good mix of both of my parents, but everyone says that I have certain “looks” that are exactly like a cousin of mine’s. My sister even saw a picture of this cousin (it was a pic of her profile) and thought it was me because of the way she was holding herself!!!!

  18. Vanessa says

I love spending time with my family. I look identical to my Dad. I have very blond hair, blue eyes, tan skin. My older brother has black hair, green eyes, and almost black skin. My younger brother has brown hair, brown eyes, and dark brown skin. God gave us our own special in our own way!

  19. Fi says

Happy belated birthday!! I love spending time with my family, I look like my mom
And sisters, nothing liked dad at all!! Btw- ur hour is sooo shiny and healthy looking!! What do u do ir use on it?? Xxo

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Thanks!!! I actually just found a new shampoo that I am in LOVE with. It’s Desert Essence coconut. The shampoo and conditioner smell like Hawaii and leave your hair so soft. Plus, can you ever go wrong with coconut? 🙂

  20. Eimear Rose says

You have the same nose as your Dad too- the little round tip! I noticed it right away, didn’t see the eyebrow similarity until you mentioned it. I have all my Dad’s facial features and colouring and I get my body shape from his mum.
Mm, I love steel cut oats. Just don’t have the time to cook them every morning.

  21. Amy says

Yes, I love spending time with my family. I feel like that makes me dorky because I am a teenager. For a short time in high school I did not get along with my parents very well, but now I am very close to both of them and I prefer it that way. What’s better than spending time with people you love?

I have brown hair and my sister has blonde hair. My mom has blonde hair and my dad has brown hair. Everyone says my mom and sister look the same, but I think if I had blonde hair everyone would say that about me also.

However, I really look nothing like my sister — other than the fact that we are both the same height.

    Oh silly genetics!

  22. lindsay says

happy birthday!! I love clay pit. I always go out for sushi, thai, or this Ethopian place here in Austin because its so authentic and yes, I can’t cook it as well.
    Cheers!

  23. Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says

What an awesome breakfast! It looks amazing!

I love that episode of Friends! Haha, hand twin! That was so funny!

  24. Stefanie says

I miss my fanily time ever since I moved 2 hours away from everyone. I spent my long weekend with them and did not want to come back to my little apartment with just my bunny to keep me company. My parents and I get along well and enjoy eachothers company. My mom and I are connected at the brain most of the time and finish eachothers sentences.

Your parents sound like such sweet people. Enjoy your time with them.:)

  25. ~Jessica Zara~ says

What a wonderful birthday breakfast for a wonderful person! You make such lovely meals for your family on their birthdays, it’s only fair that they do the same for you 😉

Apparently I look nothing like ANY of my family. I must be a stork-baby for sure…

I spend every birthday with my parents and I’m not ashamed to say it ~ friends come and go, but family are forever in my opinion…at least when they’re as kind and understanding (erm, and patient! They have to be to put up with me.) as mine are.

    xxxxxx

  26. Keri - I Eat Trees says

I see a resemblance! I don’t know who I look like- probably a little of both of my parents. Everyone says my son looks exactly like my husband… bummer!
I do love to spend time with my family, especially now that we live hours apart.

  27. Katelyn says

Awe! That is the cutest thing to get served breakfast on your birthday by your own papa 🙂

I feel ya girl – I love spending time with my family, and I’m a senior in high school! If that’s not crazy, I don’t know what is. I do look like both of my parents though, my face more like my Mom and the rest of me more like my Dad – it’s a weird combination 🙂

So glad you had an amazing birthday!! I’m sure it was generously chocolate-covered 🙂

  28. Ann Claire says

I love spending time with my family and I look A LOT like my mom!
Btw Happy Late Birthday! I haven’t been on the computer much in the last couple days or I would have told you on the actual day.

  29. ecogrrl says

you and your dad have the same eyebrows (yes yours are much prettier but the same shape!).

my dad died a couple years ago and i’m not close with my mom (they’re divorced) so my family is my friends. i know who i can count on and have people i love which is more important than dna.

ironically, one of my closest friends is my cousin, who was given up for adoption by my aunt as a baby – i met her 13 years ago when she came and found us (yay!), and she was the first person i ever felt i looked like in my family, it was so cool 🙂

  30. Alexis says

Haha that is too funny… and kind of true! Your right eyebrows are very similar 😛

I love spending time with my family, and would much rather run errands with my mom then stay at home when there is nothing else to do. I guess that makes me an abnormal teenager!?

My parents look alike (figure that one out!) and my sister and I look alike, but we do not resemble our parents.

  31. Caitlin says

It is so refreshing to see an adult spend time with her family. I love spending time with my family, too, but often feel a little strange about it. I also feel lucky to be so close with my immediate family and our family friends.

I am built like my dad, and I definitely have my grandmother’s (dad’s mom) smile and eyes. My fingers are crossed that I inherited my mom’s amazzzzing, youthful skin and incredible beauty (uh yeah still hoping I am growing into my looks).

  32. Anita says

I love spending time with my family. Most of us live in the same town so we are always visiting one another. While I was in college I lived with my grandparents and I had a blast. Since they are retired I would stay up with them and watch CSI, NCIS and any other investigation show. We would eat snacks and try to see which one of us could solve the case first.

I look just like my mom. People ALWAYS think we are sisters!

  33. BroccoliHut says

I am very attached to my family–I spend a lot of time with my parents, sisters + spouses.
I look just like my mom, so I am told.

  34. Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

You’re gorgeous, Katie!! I can’t say who I resemble more..I mean I have a lot of my dad’s features but when I was 7 I looked *exactly* like my mom when she was the same age. I actually saw her picture and thought it was me.

And I love spending time with my family! They just came to visit last weekend and it was a lot of fun. They’ll be back in a few weeks for a game, too! 🙂

  35. Meghan says

I love being with my family–but probably because we don’t do it that often because of our distance from each other-absence makes the heart grow fonder I think.

I am basically a clone of my mom, except–EYEBROWS! Everyone in my dad’s family has this weird trait where the hairs on the left left eyebrow near the nose all stand up straight…and I have it too. So I guess my dad is my identical eyebrow twin as well.

  36. Pure2Raw Twins says

Love spending time with my family, they are the best!!! And I get to see them all here very soon which I am so excited about.

I think I do look like my family, besides the obvious, my twin, I look like my dad and second oldest sister some!

    xoxo

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

I knew a set of twins in elementary school who looked more opposite than ANY sisters I’ve ever met. One had long, curly red hair and freckles. The other had super-short brown hair (completely straight). You wouldn’t have believed they were sisters, let alone twins.

  37. monicanelsonfitness says

How great is your Dad! That is so sweet. 🙂 I Love my family, they are number one for sure. My mom and I are ridiculous with our similarites-we walk the same, make the same hand gestures, cross our legs the same, we laugh the same, and my husband and my brother love making fun of us, It is good times:)

  38. Kiki says

I think I look a little like both my parents. I have my dads eyes and cheekbones. But then recently I compared a picture of my mom’s fifth grade picture to my fifth grade picture and we look almost exactly the same! Creepy, haha.

How nice of your dad to make you such a yummy birthday breakfast!

  39. Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says

You are so so so pretty! this must be the millionth time I tell you this, but you are 🙂

I always thought I look like my dad but I’ve heard that the older I get, the more I look like my mum 🙂

  40. Kris| iheartwellness.com says

Hey doll!! Long time no chat!

    How are you?

Aww what a cute pick! I think you also have the same tip of the nose 🙂 I love spending time with my family…they always get my jokes, never judge and have in depth conversations 😉 Love them!

    have a great day!

    xxoo

  41. Marianne says

Everyone says my sister and I look really alike. I guess we do, although I would argue my sister looks more like my mom’s side of the family, while I look more like my dad’s side of the family. But perhaps we just say that because we don’t want to admit we look alike 😉

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

      Hi Amber,
I think most vegans would still consider them to be vegan. i just looked at the wrapper, and it says “MAY contain milk from chocolate chips.” The reasons companies have to write that is because they often share equipment with other products that DO have dairy products. So for allergy purposes (i.e. if the machine accidentally didn’t get 100% cleaned in between uses), they have to write it. Law suits, ya know ;).

  42. Kelsey says

what a handsome daddy 🙂 i love the resemblance you have between your parents. some people look nothing like their mom or dad and its kind of unfortunate cuz its need to see parts of urself in ur ‘rents.
i look more like my mom but i have a rounder face like my dad. and me and my brothers basically look like triplets lol

    xoxo <3

  43. Becca says

So funny that you mention that Friends episode, because I noticed a few years back that my Dad is my hand twin! It’s why I spent £27 a month getting my nails made pretty… LOL!

  44. Stef says

    Hey,
I love spending time with my family too. I still live at home but my Mom works in Canada so she’s gone most of the time (3 weeks there and one week home).
I totally look like my mom. People usually think we’re sisters which kinda scares me because I never know if my mom looks so young or I look so old….
I’ve also seen pictures of her when she was younger, one picture especially where we look almost identical (we’re sleeping on the exact same couch, my grandpa had a thing for taking pics of sleeping people)

  45. Alice says

I seriously hope you don’t mind me commenting on nearly all your posts… I’m just looking for an excuse to declare my workout as finished (and love your blog. Most of all!)
I think that you and your dad also have a similar way to smile! Your teeth are different, but you use the muscles in the same way, and the way your cheeks move (this sound weird, sorry! It’s not meant to be creepy!) is similar!
I look totally alike my dad: pale (though I’m püaler than him), blond, tall, and we have the same… dent (?) in the chin… But my friends say that my mother and I have the same eyes and nose. But she looks pretty italian, I do not! And I’m jealous of her dark skin and hair… Are you also sometimes jealous of the looks (or else) of your family members?
