“Home Alone” Cooking

The post title refers not only to my lack of company last night, but also to my entertainment for the evening: Home Alone. Slowly, I’m making my way through the Christmas movies.

Before my Christmas-movie fest last night, I made myself a yummy little dinner:

kamut flakes pilaf

The movie star of the show: Bread-free Vegan Stuffing.
But just as delicious was the simple, quick pilaf I made up to go with my stuffing.

.

“Home Alone” Pilaf for One

  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 serving kamut flakes (or oats, spelt flakes, etc.) (40g)
  • 1-3 tsp vegan butter (such as Earth Balance or Smart Balance light)
  • 1 cup water (240g)

Directions: First—and this step is optional—pulse the flakes in a small magic bullet cup or blender if you want the texture of grits (or oat bran). Otherwise, start with step two: Cook the grain in a small pot, with the water and salt, until most of the water is absorbed. Add the vegan butter. (You can also add more salt, to taste.)

    First comment? WOO HOO!
“Yummy LITTLE dinner?” I don’t think “little dinner” is even in your vocabulary! 🙂 I love that you don’t make pilaf with rice. I’ve never tried savory oats, but you’ve inspired me to.

  2. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says

Katie I *love* the pink ribbon 🙂 🙂 🙂 Great choice!

Home Alone is one my all time favorite holiday movies to watch — to this day I cringe when that robber steps on that big nail on the steps — youch!!!

When I am home alone I like to soak in the tub, read a book, bake, talk on the phone/skype with friends/family. Or I find a good marathon on tv and watch for hours! (America’s Next Top Model or Pawn Stars have been my favorites lately)

  3. Lisa C. says

I love love Home Alone! I don’t really like being home alone, though. But I bet if I had your Bread free Vegan Stuffing, I wouldn’t mind so much ;).

  4. Sarahishealthy says

LOL about the pink ribbon. I love how you always put fake flowers or something else fun in your photos to jazz them up. Not that they aren’t jazzy enough with just the gorgeous food :).
I still have that stuffing on my to-do list. And now I might have to add the pilaf too. It looks so yummy. I’ve never seen kamut flakes, but I did see Eden spelt flakes at WF the other day, so I might have to splurge!

  5. Albizia says

Oh, how I crave this stuffing! Do your meals really have to always look so delicious? I had dinner an hour ago and now I am hungry again.

I love being alone most of the time. I watch movies and read books, too. And sometimes I sing because I am too shy to sing in front of people. My craziest “alone” activity is cleaning. It may sound weird but I like cleaning the whole place and contemplating the results 😀 .

  6. abby says

ooooh katie, your pilaf sounds so yummylicious! just like everything you make hehe. i want to be your tummy. i love grits, but am bummed that they’re not whole wheat, so i want to try this asap! maybe with some oat bran because i am lazy and don’t feel like doing the first step!

  7. Jennifer JCD says

I don’t like being home ALL alone, so that’s why we have two kitties to curl up with me when my husband is out of the house. I would feel really lonely without them. When I am home alone (with the kitties) I love to cook, fold laundry (whilst watching a movie), and catch up on sewing projects.

We’re watching all our Christmas movies too, and we even found some ‘new’ ones at a thrift store this weekend. What are your top 5 Christmas movies?

  8. Valerie says

Wow, so ironic that you would post this today. I went to the store and bought all the ingredients to make your “stuffing” last night! Will let you know how it turns out :).

  9. Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel says

i get so lonely when im home alone..which is frequent actually. i definitely feel like i’m in that movie lol. but its also fun sometimes cuz it means i get the kitchen to myself and can make hugeeee stir fries <3

gahh i cant tell you how much i love your site upgrades. its so much fun visiting ur blog because everything looks so clean and professional!
    xoxo

Haha! One man wolf pack! Good one, Camille. Favorite movie ever! Anyway, I LOVE being home alone. I’m an only child, so I grew up spending a lot of time with myself. And honestly, I’m my own best company. I must have “me” time or I’ll go crazy. I love dining alone, shopping alone, you name it. Does that make me a hermit? I do have friends, but I choose to ignore their calls and invites sometimes.

  11. Emma (Sweet Tooth Runner) says

Oooh I really want to make that tasty looking pilaf, especially since it only has 4 ingredients! 🙂
My favourite home alone activitie is baking! 😀 Well, to be honest, I do that whether I’m alone or not, but being alone gives me a good excuse I think! 😛 So yes ,I love being home alone!

  12. Emily Elizabeth @ Kisses for Breakfast says

That looks delicous. I have yet to try mache greens and will keep my eye out for them. I love being home alone for about 2-3 hours, but after that, I miss my hubby and baby. 🙂 But I REALLY need those 2-3 hours once and a while to sort of “center” myself. I always decide to spend that time in the kitchen and usually work on creating a new recipe.

  13. Becca says

I love being home alone (although I’m never alone really since I consider my cat company lol). I like watching movies, reading, cooking, the girlie stuff like painting my nails and a bubble bath!

  14. Natalia - a side of simple says

I actually really enjoy being home alone. I think it’s neat to live by yourself but then be surrounded with family and friends near by where you can go and visit, but then retreat back to your little hobbit hole (at least in my case…) I love that you post “single serving” recipes. Though, obviously there are not “single servings” when it comes to chocolate. It’s all up for grabs! 🙂

  15. Susan says

One thing I like to do when I’m alone is pull out my yoga mat and put on a movie for some entertaining stretchy time! The only time I do yoga haha.

  16. Camille says

I do like being home alone. I am a bit of a “one man wolf pack”, if you will (Please, please know which movie that is from!) so I like my “me” time.
I think really I just wanted to use that quote 🙂

  17. melissa @ the delicate place says

i love being home alone but it doesn’t happen very often at all! i like to play guitar, paint my nails or do a “spa” night for myself

  18. Fi says

I’m home alone for this week and I love it! Its so nice to have every now and then! I love the home alone movies, but only the first and second ones, the rest are s bit dodgy!
I like lighting the fire, pj’s. Cuppa tea, a good tv programme or movie-kinda like what I’m doing right now 😉 xxx

  19. Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) says

Girl…I have come full circle w/ being alone. I used to HATE it when scott traveled on biz when we were first married (10 yrs ago…god I got married young! lol) or when i traveled for work and was gone from him.

I also used to hate it when skylar was a baby and he “left me” w/ her b/c of biz travel. It’s hard being home alone w/ a baby and no sleep 🙂

But now, she’s almost 4…I actually LOVE it when he’s gone and she’s napping…it’s like my 2 hours of peace and solitude. Quiet time is a beautiful thing 🙂

  20. Quix says

Yum! I like being home alone for a while, but then I’ll get hung up on everyone else out having fun and I’ll want to be out too. But sometimes, it’s relaxing….

  21. Lauren @ Coachlauren.net says

    Hey Katie,

Home Alone is one of my all time favorite Christmas movies! Actually, we watched it last weekend 🙂

I love reading when I’m home alone, or getting some good blog posts done!

  22. emily says

I really don’t mind being home alone. Then I can get the kitchen messy while baking and not feel bad about it and sing broadway tunes at the top of my lungs. 🙂

  23. Jess@atasteofconfidence says

Sometimes I love being home alone, and sometimes I hate it. But I really like watching TV/ movies and baking when I am!

  24. BroccoliHut says

I really don’t mind being alone–I actually much prefer to be alone or with just one or two close friends than to be surrounded by a crowd. I spent today alone, and I went to Trader Joe’s, read Clean Eating magazine, and relaxed with some tea at Starbucks:)

  25. Melissa @ I Never Imagined says

Mmm yummy pilaf! Yes I loooove being home alone… for about an hour. Then I think of all these funny jokes and have nobody to tell them to 🙂

  26. Namaste Gurl says

I hate when people complain that “being alone” is some sort of negative event. I think of it more as relaxing and well, stress- free 🙂 And I have YET to watch me some xmas movies, still not really in the xmas spirit, sad, huh?!

  27. Claire says

Funnily enough I think cooking/baking something new would be my favourite alone activity. This means my family get a nice surprise when they get home, or, if I stuff the recipe up no one will ever know 😛

  28. Cynthia says

I don’t really like being alone that much. Now that I’m married, I can appreciate being alone a bit more. Having alone time allows me to watch all the “trashy” tv that he makes fun of me for watching. 😉

  29. abby says

‘home alone’ is on my “12 days of christmas movies” list. night number one was last night – “christmas vacation”. i had never seen it before.

being alone is how i recharge. most people sap my energy, even if i really love and adore the person (my husband is an exception). my favorite alone activity is probably napping… does that count as an activity? ha.

  30. Alanna says

Just tried this “pilaf”, and it’s so easy and yummy! I never would have thought to make oatmeal savory. I like rice, but it takes so long to make that I won’t bother unless I’m cooking for another person or preparing a big batch for the week. I did 1/4 cup rolled oats plus 1/2 cup water (and salt) in the microwave for 3 minutes and it was perfect. Plus, the texture and consistency of this is much nicer (and easier to eat!) than rice. My friends are going to get tired of hearing me rave about this blog, lol.

  31. Molly says

I love Home Alone! All of your food is so good that I have made. Can you tell me what are the green vegetables pictured in the photo with your kamut and stuffing?
