Super-Cute Dishes!

Moving Day!

No, not for me. For Jessica.

A few days ago, Jessica asked if I’d mind accompanying her to Crate and Barrel to buy supplies for her new apartment. Um, mind? Really now, Jessica, do you know me at all? Of course I will go with you. And what’s more, I will buy a ton of items for myself, so you don’t have to stand alone at the cash register when it’s time to pay. Ah, what a good friend I am.

Below, trying out a new bowl and spoon:

Some of you might recall my modeling career. 😉

Henry wanted in on the modeling action too. He was jumping up, trying to figure out, “What’s Mommy photographing up there on the table?” So I put a glass down to his level. (I thoroughly washed it afterwards!!)

As soon as he saw there was no food, Henry lost interest in the glass. Clearly, he does not share my appreciation for pretty dishware.

Above, my favorite of the day’s purchases. Isn’t it cute? Good for soba, perhaps? And below, all the purchases:

plates

Guess how much I paid for all of this…

$50? $100? $100?

How about $30? Deal of the century!! Smile

(I love a good bargain!)

So how did miss Jessica fare? Well, she definitely spent a considerable amount more than me. But hey, furniture costs more than dishware. What’s a girl to do? At least I stocked her up with free dessert:

samoas balls sharp

Raw Samoas Truffles

See? I told you I was a good friend! (I always make sure to have some sort of fudge babies for Jessica; she likes them more than anyone else I know!)

Question of the Day:
Do you like stores such as Pier One or Pottery Barn?

I used to think these kinds of stores were the most boring places on the face of the earth!

By the way, the best store for dishware is the Pearl River Mart.

Tomorrow: Carrot Cake in a Bowl! :)

Katie is the baker, photographer, and author of the popular blog Chocolate-Covered Katie. Her favorite food is chocolate, and she believes in eating a balanced diet that includes dessert every single day. More about Katie—>

  1. Ikea is my HOME!! I spend SO long looking at all the pretty plates, before heading to the bed section so I can bounce on the springy matresses! Only kidding, I don’t really do that… 😉

And you SHOULD be a model Katie!! Too darn gorgeous!! :)

Can’t WAIT for Carrot Cake in a Bowl!! I have your Banana Bread in a Bowl at LEAST once a week, and I LOVE it!! 😀

  2. Freya says:

yes yes YES! Any store that sells dishware is like..a paradise :) My family hate it – our cupboards are exploding with random dishes that don’t match or fit 😛

  3. Stefanie says:

I like Crate and Barrel the best. It is fun looking at all dishes and furniture but it can be expensive. You got a great deal on all of your stuff. The two compartment bowl is cute. The best Ikea I have been to is in Chicago. It is huge compared to the one I have by my house. Can’t wait for the carrot cake in a bowl. :)

Henry is a cute little model. 😉

  4. That bowl is fabulous! I need one, I have such a thing for eating everything out of giant big deep bowls and that would just be perfect. Pile of steamed greens in one side, bug a boo pilaf in the other ! :-)

  5. Jennifer JCD says:

I certainly share your love for housewares stores. I also love the local pottery guild shop because they have locally handmade dishware that is one of a kind, durable, and stunningly beautiful.

  6. Katie says:

I do like Pier One. I never buy anything from places like that, though. I just like to go and look. I love poking at the housewares sections of antique markets and thrift stores though.

  7. Disturbed says:

    Ikea = home.
    I love that place.

  8. I’m super addicted to home furnishing stores. Ikea and Pier One are LOOOOOVE. I do like getting goodies at thrift stores though – I love that it’s more eco-friendly and wallet-friendly as well, plus I can get a huge variety of mismatched items for the blog!

  9. I definitely used to hate those kinds of places when I was younger. My mom was obsessed with Pottery Barn and when we were at the mall she would peak in and I would be bratty and complain! How naive I was, I love that store now along with Ikea of course :)

  10. I love Pier 1 — I worked there all through high school and college. Sometimes I wish I still worked there! Crate and Barrel – there isn’t a store too close to me so I haven’t been there very much, but I’m sure I’d love it and spend way more than $30!

  11. love those dishes! i love all those stores now! i hated them when I was a kid and we went in them with my parents, haha but now i love them!

  12. Jojo says:

I love browsing around Crate and Barrel and I wish I could buy the whole store! I also love shopping in kitchen supply stores for baking pans, dishes, appliances, etc. Kitchen stuff is my second favorite thing to shop for, food being the first!

  13. You seriously got a deal!! Love those dishes! I could use a few more cute dishes but am always way too cheap to buy them myself. 😛

  14. Gen says:

    Can’t wait for tomorrow’s recipe!!! 😀
Those dishes ARE super cute!!! And what a great deal!

  15. Kimberley says:

My goodness they dishes are so cute! I did not used to like it at all, but I am doing up my room and I have a new appreciation for those types of stores and I am always on the look out for good deals as some of the peices can be quite expensive. I also love Winners Home Sense — they have some great steals, if you are one too search!

  16. oh cute!! I have the exact same two flat dishes in the middle… arent they are so pretty? :)

  17. Cute dishes!

I’ve been dying to go to ikea…. Let’s hope I can go soon!

  18. Marina says:

Oh gosh I love buying stuff for the house! Specially for the kitchen 😀 Can’t wait for summer when I’ll have to decorate an apartment for my bf :)

  19. Lisa says:

i must admit, im not a big dinnerware shopper, only bc i spend all my money on clothes… hahah
but, at my house we have these beautiful rose dishes that I feel so fancy eating off of. So. hopefully thats good enough 😉
those dishes are NICE tho! I like the two compartments one :)

  20. I love IKEA and Target for dishes. I also like to go to the antique place! Those are super cute dishes.

  21. Alyson says:

Totally know what you mean about the obsession with home decor and dish ware… Whenever I see a store like that (i.e. Ikea, Pottery Barn, Pier One, Williams Sonoma) I have to stop myself before I go in and get a game plan (it’s a dangerous place in there, ya know! ;)). I totally used to think that kind of stuff was boring too, but now I’m obsessive about it and am always wanting to get new stuff. It’s a problem sometimes, really… :)
    Aly

  22. Ally says:

I am getting married in a few weeks, and other than my hubby-to-be, the best part was creating our registries! Can you say Pottery Barn, Ikea, and Williams & Sonoma HERE I COME!!! It was SO much fun, and I can’t wait to see all the goodies that we get.

P.S. I recently started using the Organic Coconut Shampoo and Conditioner that you recommended and YUMM – I love it! I can’t wait for carrot cake in a bowl tomorrow :)

    1. Aww yay! Maybe if more ppl start using it, it’ll become more mainstream and they can therefore lower the price! Hehe I can hope, right? 😉

  23. janet says:

I see beauty in the designs of these houseware dishes. Hope to see some photo’s with one of your latest divine dishes.

  24. Jen says:

I love buying things for my apartment! Especially anything that goes in the kitchen. I spend way too much money on food-related items…most of which are food…but still! I need to budget. I should go shopping with you…$30? Good job. My credit card doesn’t even know numbers that low exist. What’s a foodie to do?

    1. I try to look at the price FIRST thing so I don’t fall in love with something only to be disappointed!

  25. Lindsey in CO says:

We are getting an IKEA in Denver this fall – I’m seriously considering being one of those stupid people who camps out in the parking lot to be there for the official opening of the store. Heck, people camp out for Chick-Fil-A openings, and IKEA is WAY better! :)

    1. I waited in line for 4 hours to get beanie babies once. *Hides in embarrassment*

  26. Emilia says:

I spend WAY too much mula at Crate and Barrel! I try to only allow myself 2-3 visits there per year, as each trip adds up! :)

  27. I love Crate and Barrel!! We have an outlet store near me that I don’t go to enough!

  28. Love those dishes! Great deal!

  29. My favorite is World Market…and searching Goodwill for more unique (and cheap!) finds. :)

  30. OMG, those kinds of stores are my FAVORITE. Have you ever been to World Market?? I think you would love love love that store. I also can’t stay away from Bed, Bath and Beyond…i could spend hours in that store!

    1. Ooo I do! I do! They have such cute things… and really funny-flavored Jones sodas!

  31. I LOVE that bowl with the separate section! You could put some kind of dip in there!! Or salad dressing and dip you veggie in instead of pouring it over. So much potential! Dishes are my weakness. I can’t stop buying them!! I never buy sets, only singles. I hate matchy-matchy.

  32. I love Crate and Barrel! They have THE most amazing deals & steals.

  33. What a great deal! And I think you could win anyone over with fudge babies. Come to think of it – that’s how you scored that deal, isn’t it? Bribed the cashier with fudge babies. 😉

    1. Shhh! Don’t tell everyone the secret ;).

  34. I love your purchases! I cannot get enough of Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel. When I was little my parents would drag me into those stores and I would hate it! They would always say, when you get older you’ll love these stores…boy were they right! Also on the list of previously despised stores are Restoration Hardware and antique malls :)

  35. I LOVE Pier 1…I can’t wait to have my own place so I can buy everything in the store!

  36. Lori says:

I am a huge sucker for Crate and Barrel. I used to work in downtown Chicago and there is a 4 floor Crate and Barrel on Michigan Avenue. I used to go there on my lunch all of the time. I don’t make it to the one in Oak Brook, IL (western suburb) as much, but when I do, I always find great bargains. Love Crate and Barrel. It’s one of my favorite stores.

  37. I’m obsessed with ikea…they really do have the best deals!! Pier 1 is my favorite though…I thoroughly stalk the clearance sales there and ALWAYS find so many things!! Love love love all of their vases and pillows!

  38. Eric Jaffa says:

How old were you when you “fell asleep on the rugs at Ikea”?

  39. I love home stores. So much fun. Really excited for the carrot cake in a bowl, too. :-)

  40. Omg I post all the time about my little blogger finds with dishes, props, cute mugs and bowls…I used to hate Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, and discount stores like that b/c they are visual chaos and I like neat and orderly but for bloggie finds, you cannot beat them!

Glad you found such cute stuff and at a value!! Amen for saving money!

  41. greeeat great buy katie! wow. Yes i love places like that but they’re usually so pricey. those bowls are so cute 😉

  42. Chelsea says:

Who doesn’t love all of those stores?! Ikea for dressers and beds and then bed bath and beyond for all the decorations 😉

  43. Dianne says:

Pretty dishware! It’s very hip New York restaurant-style. I don’t even let myself in those kinds of stores for fear of buying them out.

  44. IKEA– a blessing and a curse rolled into one cute loveseat. Goodness knows how many paint swatches I have (and pictures of different pieces of furniture) for when I move in to my own apartment. Did Jessica enjoy perusing Crate and Barrel? With a store like that, where you can snoop out a deal if you look hard enough, it turns into an all day adventure!
p.s. very classy looking plates. Makes you look very sheek :)

    1. Haha yeah, she liked it even more than me!

  45. A.Cook says:

Oh my goodness I LOVE furniture and houseware stores…can’t afford any of them (except ever-magical Ikea!). My absolute favorite is Williams Sonoma–I love to go in and just look around. Crate & Barrel is also awesome–kudos to you for getting all that great stuff for so cheap!

  46. I love IKEA! About 3/4 of our house is furnished with IKEA (the rest is vintage). I could spend so many hours in there. I just wish it wasn’t so far away in Frisco!

    1. LOL you go to the same one as me! Maybe we’ve even passed each other there… :)

  47. Jess says:

i wouldn’t consider pottery barn in the same league as pier one and ikea. ikea looks cool, but in my experience, you have to be careful, it’s been hit or miss. pier one, in there the other day, don’t really care much for it either. i only like certain stuff from pottery barn, mostly the teen home furnishings.

  48. Yum! Those fudge babies look perfecto! Love the chocolate drizzle on top!

I love home stores! Especially when I can find fun bowls and cute spoons! I always end up spending waaaay to much money though!

  49. I love buying new plates and bowls! My parents hate it because it takes up so much room in the cupboard though :)

  50. Megan says:

Oh dang you sure SCORED big time!
I love dishes! (not something most teens say haha) but I’m always looking at them when I go shoppin’ 😛

  51. Mihika says:

I LOVE Ikea! I have an obsession with new crockery – especially pasta plates and bowls. Also wineglasses – and I don’t even drink wine! I’ve just always thought they looked so elegant, right from when I was about four. Unfortunately, all the wineglasses I’ve ever had broke after the first few uses – those stems are too delicate to hold thick, heavy smoothies! Boo!

  52. emma says:

Love the new kitchenware sweetie! Good taste :-) Check out my latest post :-) xoxo

  53. Angel7 says:

Those Raw Samoas Truffles look spectacular and yummy!

I used to think home-accent stores were boring as well. However, now I like to shop in them.

My favorite home-accent store is Kirkland’s, but I like Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel as well.

  54. im so glad i found your blog! ill def be coming back for some decadent but also HEALTHY (who knew!) chocolate dishes. keep it going girl!

  55. s says:

    cute new plates :)

  56. BroccoliHut says:

Love the new dishes! I love shopping for new dishes, although my cupboards are just about packed to the brim these days…

  57. Alyssa says:

That is a pretty amazing deal! I can never leave stores without spending 50 dollars! I think Target is my favorite :)

  58. ruby red says:

Hiiiiiiii Katie! I haven’t commented in a while but I’m still reading all your posts! Yes, you are such a good friend for making your friend not feel lonely shelling out the dough for lovely housewares. Why oh why is spending money so fun?? I wanna make it to C&B soon for their cute spoons! And that squat clear glass you bought looks like it would be a beautiful vessel for boatmeal! The girl from Edible Perspective puts her buckwheat bakes in something like that, so I guess they must last in the micro/and/or oven??

    1. Ruby Red!!!!! Ohmigosh haven’t talked 2 u in 4evah! But I think of you every single time I pass by a coffee shop. I always remember your adorable love of latte art :). Hope all is well, my dark-chocolate-eating friend!

  59. Love your new dishes! I have always loved shopping for kitchen things!

  60. Stephanie says:

I totally used to find them boring but, like you, now I love them! I’m lucky because my mom is an interior decorator so I can tag along whenever she goes out to buy furniture and accessories for showhomes. I’m her little helper =)
Btw, words cannot describe how excited I am for tomorrow’s post. That might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but just a teeny weeny one.

    1. Ooo I hope it doesn’t disappoint!

  61. Those dishes ARE cute!! I love getting new dishes :)

Why aren’t you a model???? You’re definitely gorgeous enough to be! 😀

And those somoas truffles from your last post (and this post)?? Ahhhh they look too amazing!!

    <3

    1. I LOVE u!!!! Come to Texas and I will pepper you with chocolate… and then we can go shopping for dishes :).

  62. Albizia says:

I think I’d love Ikea but next time I need something, I’d rather check the Sayonara sale at the university first :) . They offer some pretty good stuff. And right now I definitely need a dish but they don’t have anything for me at the Hyaku yen shops :(

  63. CANT WAIT FOR CARROT CAKE IN A BOWL!!!

  64. McKella says:

I loooove Ikea and Pier 1! Sam and I love to go on dates to Ikea. We like to look around and imagine what our house will be like some day, then get food in the cafeteria. Ikea has really good dark chocolate too. I also just moved within walking distance of a Pier 1, but so far I haven’t gone there yet.

  65. Haylee says:

$30?? Wow excellent work. I love them too, especially the smaller bowl.
I loove Ikea except for the fact that it takes HOURS to get through the whole thing. But for cute dishes, Anthropologie is my favorite by far. Too bad one little teacup costs an arm and a leg. (which I definitely don’t have to spare. hahah just kidding. :)

    1. LOL I try not to even let myself go IN to Anthro, because I always want to buy all the expensive–and super cute–dishes and clothes!

  66. Lyza says:

I’m a lame-o and I try to buy everything used just because there’s so much cute dishware out there already that people are selling, I’m a cheapskate, and kind of an environmentalist too…But I ADORE your new dishware. It’s gorgeous :) If you’re going to buy it new, may as well be for a fantastic deal. :)
