Patriotic Cookie Dough Balls

Cookie Dough Balls coming atcha!

patriotic

Full speed ahead.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Chefs in Training

Last Friday, I once again babysat for the two little girls I mentioned a few posts back. I love babysitting for them, and I never thought I’d say that because babysitting has never been my favorite thing. But these girls are just so much fun. It’s not like work at all; it’s more like hanging out with my friends.

On Friday night, we made Cookie Dough Balls.

The recipe is so simple that I was curious as to just how much time it takes, from start to finish. So I set a timer. Including baking time, the cookies were done in ten minutes flat! Of course, I did have two of the world’s greatest helpers. Yesterday, the girls’ mom informed me that I’ve created a monster (or rather two monsters). Apparently they spent all day in the kitchen, making cookie dough balls!

The recipe is the same as my Funfetti cookie dough balls. But I’m posting it again below for your convenience, so you don’t have to click over.

Patriotic Cookie Dough Balls

Based off the recipe for Single-Lady Cookies.

  • 5 level teaspoons oat flour or white flour (18g)
  • scant 1/16th tsp baking soda
  • 1/16th tsp salt (less if using margarine)
  • 2 tsp oil or pre-melted margarine (can do a fat-free version, but they’ll be cake-ier)
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tsp sprinkles
  • 12 or so chocolate chips (or raisins, nuts, etc)
  • sweetener (My testers liked 1 tsp brown + 1 tsp white sugar. Xylitol works too.)
  • 1 tsp milk of choice, or as needed (Don’t use water.)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine dry ingredients, then add wet and mix with a fork. Form into three little balls (Do not smush.) Cook for 8-9 minutes. (Take out when still a bit undercooked, so they don’t get hard.) If not eating right away, store in a lidded plastic container to keep soft.

Question of the Day:

Did you like to cook when you were a kid?

I did! One of the first “recipes” I ever created was some type of bean soup. My poor family… I made them eat multiple bowls of my soup every day.

I also liked making: 3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Balls.

i loved to cook when i was a kid! i remember making cream puffs, homemade fortune cookies, and pot roasts when i was little! it was always so much fun to experiment with new recipes – it’s like a science lab in your home!
    🙂

  2. Claire says

Oh those cookies DO look like they were fun to photograph. And fun to eat as well!

By the way, just wondering do you ever look at the Foodgawker “most gawked” list? If you don’t, you should because there are like FIVE of your photos on there lol.

Just thought I should tell you in case you’ve never looked there :).

    • Claire says

Oh yeah, and I had an Easy Bake oven when I was younger. I LOVED it! Made all sorts of brownies and cakes in there. I thought I’d be a pastry chef when I grew up.

  3. Qi Ting @ Misadventures of Fat free Baking says

I loved cooking when I was a kid. The first time I cooked was when I was 8. After a few months of watching my mum cook at her side, on my mum’s birthday, I cooked her some eggs with chives… and added too much soy sauce. To balance out the saltiness, I made my 6 year old brother chop up some toast and also the eggs and I mixed them up in a bowl. My mum pretended that it tasted good. Thinking back, it must have been rather gross.

You must teach those girls how to bake your recipes! They’ll thank you when they are older 😀

  4. Lisa says

So cute! I love the first picture! And I agree with another commenter that I want you to come babysit me and make me all your chocolate creations :).

  5. Liz @ Tip Top Shape says

I used to like cooking with my grandma. We would make our family’s birthday cakes together. I pretty much learned everything from her. I hope that I become half the cook/baker that she is. I’ve never tasted anything from her kitchen that wasn’t amazing–even when she admittedly goofs the recipe!

  6. Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says

LOVED cooking when I was a kid! We cooked all the time and I was sooooooo disappointed that my mom would never get me an easy bake oven like all of the other girls. (we used a real oven…. hahaha) SO, she bought me one for my bridal shower as a joke!

  7. Lilly says

awww that is adorable! I used to make my best friend play “cooking show” in my kitchen for hours making all types of stuff that I then made my mom eat, water and lemon soup with flower petals was my specialty, ummm.. yumm?

  8. Jenny says

I didn’t like cooking when I was little, but baking? Love love loved it! I was even good and didn’t eat cookie dough when we would make cookies, and didn’t lick the batter when making cake or muffins or cupcakes, or anything! That’s probably the only reason my mom let me help her bake, haha. I was scared of kitchen knives though so I never actually started chopping veggies by myself until I was 14 or so! 😛

Those cookie dough balls are adorable… Love the photography here as well! Gorgeous lighting and very nice food styling, what with the blue-checkered backdrop + star decorations. Looks like you’re in for an amazing [and delicious] fourth of July tomorrow!

Enjoy the rest of your long weekend. 🙂

  9. Amber K says

Not at all! I never liked to cook. I don’t even really like to do it now. I like trying new recipes, but the actual process isn’t my fave. Especially if I’m hungry, lol!

  10. Tara says

My babysitters were never that fun! Actually, I always cried when they came.

I can’t say I was a little chef — unless you count seperating cookie dough blocks — but I loved to make menus! I would go onto microsoft word and design my own restaurants. The menu was pretty much always chicken nuggets, fries, and a chocolate chip cookie, but I wasn’t too creative.

  11. Aja says

That’s adorable. I always get lucky and babysit the sweetest kids. They’re too young to bake with, though. I always loved baking as a kid. Whenever I’d got to my omi’s we’d make cookies and cakes and all kinds of things.

  12. katie @KatieDid says

I love babysitting the one girl I usually babysit for because I’ve literally watched her grow up. It’s fun to bake together also, but we usually stick to slice and bake because her attention span isn’t quite there yet lol. I actually didn’t like to bake too much growing up. Me and my friends used to make cooking shows on the video camera though, with boxed cake and the like!

  13. Marissa says

I’ve always loved to cook for as long as I could remember! Haha, I remember when I was wayyyy too little to actually help in the kitchen (like, 3) I had one of those Playmate kitchen playsets, and I would “cook” everything! I loved all my little pots and pans and my little oven, lol.

  14. Holly @ The Runny Egg says

Those are so cute Katie — and I love the red/blue star garland 🙂 Makes me think of the fake flowers!

I did like to cook when I was a kid — I’d always help my dad with dinner ( usually making the crescent rolls or other biscuits) or my mom if she had to make cookies or something. Licking the beaters was the best part!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Seriously, EVERY time I take photos with fake flowers, I think of you! It makes me smile :).
Lately I’ve been into ribbon… but I need to get back into the fake flowers. They’re feeling neglected!

  15. Aine @ Something to Chew Over says

I really enjoyed cooking as a kid! I was very lucky as my mother was very encouraging – she got me kids’ cookery books and little aprons and baking tools. She would also give me little bits of pastry or dough anytime she was baking to play with before making my own mini dessert!

My favourite things to make were cupcakes, cookies, Rice Krispy cakes, granola and fruit crumbles. So not much has changed 🙂

  16. Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says

My family officially hates rice krispie squares because I made them so often haha. These looks delish though! very patriotic 🙂

  17. Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free says

    Awwww! How fun 😀

And I also enjoyed cooking when I was little! Never missed a chance to bake some cookies for my family 😀 And back then-they were not healthy-and they were full of sugar! ha! How times have changed…

  18. O.C. says

I liked to help my mommy in the kitchen all the time when I was a kid! Especailly when she was baking a cake cause that ment I’d get to lick the bowl and the beaters and help frost it 🙂

  19. kaila @ healthy helper! says

I think I’ve literally been in the kitchen since I was bron…..my earliest memories are actualyl of me in the jitchen helping my mom bake cakes, chop veggies, and stir sauces! So I definitely looove to cook! I am probably in the kitchen more than any other room in my house!

  20. Jess from Midwest Vegan says

I loved to cook! In fact, when I was in first grade (when I first got interested), my grandma got me this alphabet cookbook. I think it was sold by a cereal company and the recipes were like “Z” is for “Z”ebra Cookies and “P” is for “P”izza Pockets. It single-handedly launched me into cooking. I still have a copy. 🙂

I’d say I made a lot of no-bake cookies and chocolate chip-oatmeal cookies. Haha. And for the no-bakes I’d have to stand on a chair to be able to stir them!! Good times. Got me into a lifelong hobby!

  21. Eleanor@eatinglikeahorse says

I used to love making cakes, especially these ones called mooncakes. Not sure why they were called that, they were little chocolate chip cupcakes with lemon icing, but I made them so much, I still know the recipe now!

  22. L. says

Those look gorgeous! I’ve always loved to cook, and I think I’m a pretty good cook. But the stuff I make never LOOKS as pretty as yours. Oh well, taste is more important, right? 🙂

  23. Cait's a Runnerchick says

i’m the exact same way with babysitting…people would always ask me and assume i’d jump at the chance because i’m a girl, but i’m really pretty picky about the kids i actually ‘like.’ i can’t stand kids that are just plain brats…lol. but when i DO find kids i love i really enjoy spending time with them and will go out of my way to do fun things with them, crafts, games, etc.

i think it’s so awesome u’re getting these girls baking and cooking! i wish i had the chance to do more of that growing up because i think it would have really helped me out today.

okay, and u kno i’m already obsessed with cookie dough, but u just kicked it up a notch with the colors…way better than fireworks! 🙂

  24. Kaitlyn@TheTieDyeFIles says

I was definitely infatuated with cooking at a young age! I mostly loved baking, but as I got older I started insisting on making dinner for my mom. She didn’t love my love for garlic! Loving and being good at are definitely two different beasts though. I’ve certainly improved!

  25. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says

Oh Katie the balls look sooo lovely!

Super patriotic and just PERFECT. They should be shoe-in’s for the Food Gods. 🙂

And as a kid, yes, I loved to cook and bake with my mom and grandma. Some of my fondest childhood memories and the memories I have of my grandmas all involve cooking and baking with my grammies. So fun 🙂

    • Fit Foodie says

Hahahahahhaa pretty balls! Sorry, ignore me, I’m a 5 year old inside :).
But yes, I agree. The balls look so pretty. Almost too pretty to eat!
      Almost!

  26. Emily@RunningPerspective says

i lovedddddddd to cook when i was younger….well does box funfetti cake mix count? cause i made that and chocolate chip cookies like it was my jobbbbb!

  27. Jess says

    Hi Katie!

    http://www.theinspiringvegan.com/raspberry-ganache-fudge-cake-2/
have you seen this before? It was DELISH and my dad even liked it! Hahaha just thought I’d share it with you since it was chocolatey 😛
    Jess xx

  28. BroccoliHut says

Oddly enough, I was not much of a cook as a kid–I mostly just decorated cookies in the kitchen:)

  29. Elise says

I never baked with the kids I babysat for, they probably would have shut me in the oven. But I did feed them, peanut butter & jam sandwiches were the only way to make them go to sleep!! Your cookie balls look really tasty, I may have to make some, though maybe less patriotic.

Weird thing, I was reading back over some of your old posts & comments and saw you were born in Pembury hospital, that’s about 5 miles from where I live, small world eh? Damn now I sound like a stalker. Anyway going now!!

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Are you serious?! Oh my gosh too cool! It’s so beautiful there… of course, I was 5 the last time I was lucky enough to visit. But maybe next time I go, I can meet you! Haha who’s the stalker now? 😉

      • Elise says

It is pretty beautiful 🙂 though I think sometimes I take it for granted!

Let me know when you come visit!! I’ll bring cupcakes!

  30. michelle says

I hated cooking when I was young. My mother would work late and I’d have to make dinner for my sister and I. Chocolate chip pancakes or macaroni with a can of tomatoes. Either or. Every night. Now I love it!

  31. Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy Girl" says

Sooooo cute! I’ll bet your little helpers were soooo happy!

I loved to bake cookies when I was younger. Every Christmas/Hannukah, my mother and I would make holiday cookies for all of my teachers. My favorite part was definitely the frosting. We’d turn the frostings into different colors: Red, Green, Blue and Yellow. I was always shocked when they all tasted the same 😉

    Happy 4th!

  32. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says

I can definitely think of worse things those little girls could be doing! lol. I loved playing in the kitchen and cooking as a child. My Grandma was just telling me today about how I would pull a chair up to the counter and play in the spice rack for hours.

  33. Serena (Green Beans & Jam) says

I loved to cook when I was a kid – but couldn’t make anything that difficult, of course.
I loved making & decorating pizza (especially getting to knead the homemade dough that my aunt would make) and baking cookies. I loved licking spoons with drippy batter. MM…and no-bake cookies….

One of my most vivid memories of my childhood is making little mochi-ish balls with my mom & decorating them to look like eyeballs for Halloween. 🙂

  34. April says

    Hi Katie,
I recently found out that I have many small cysts and might have PCOS. The new diet style that I am trying to follow is pretty much vegan, but I have no idea how to start. I’ve always eaten a very clean diet (I hardly ever touch sugar or anything not whole grain, etc) but I was following Tom Venuto’s plan, which advocates a large intake of protein. I’ve been eating a fair share of animal-based proteins and I can’t figure out how to replace them without ending up eating too many calories. Do you have any high-protein veggie based food (preferably budget friendly- I’m in high school and I don’t want to empty my or my parent’s wallets ahaha) suggestions, etc? Thank you so much 🙂

  35. Dominica08 says

I just want to say thanks and that I love your recipes they are easy to do with my two year old and they always make the perfect amount!
