Breakfast Ideas for New Year’s Day

Yawn!

This year, one of my good friends is throwing a New Year’s Eve party that doesn’t even start until 10:30. So I doubt any of us will get to bed until at least 3… and most people will probably sleep right through breakfast the next day.

No matter how late you’re up partying, here are five reasons to drag yourself out of bed for a New Year’s breakfast:

Cinnamon Roll Pie

This pie is a good choice for two reasons. First: it secretly contains beans, which are symbolic of money and prosperity for the new year. Second: round foods are considered “lucky” at New Year’s because they represent coming full-circle and a fortunate cycle for the next year.

Chocolate-Chip Banana Bread

Nothing relevant came up when I typed “chocolate for a lucky new year” into the google search bar. Eh, what does google know? Chocolate is always lucky. The more chocolate you have, the luckier you are. Always.

peach-breakfast-bake

Pear-Vanilla Breakfast Cobbler

Pears represent prosperity and immortality due to the long lifespan of the pear trees. This cobbler, however, does not last very long. At least not in my house!

apple-bar

Hot Apple Crumble Bars

Apples are a symbol of pleasure, love, and fertility. When cut across the middle, the center has a five-pointed star, which represents a life in balance for the coming year.

And last, but not least…

vegan-spice-cake

Mini Eggnog Spice Cake

Many cultures share the tradition of hiding trinkets inside a cake on New Year’s, where the person who finds the trinket will have the best luck in the coming year. This yummy little cake is healthy enough to eat for breakfast—well, unless you accidentally eat a hidden trinket.

Then maybe it’s not so healthy…

Question of the Day:

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?

I might make a dessert for the party, but I probably won’t since it starts so late. My other New Year’s Eve plans include a Scrabble marathon with my roommate until it’s time to leave.

No New Years plans yet. Maybe I’m getting too old to live it up? I think last year I crashed before midnight. 🙂 Might stop over to visit the family earlier in the day though. They usually have some fun games going on and yummy food cooking.

  2. tea-bagginit says

i’m such a lame-o when it comes to new year’s! i’m an early riser and so staying up till midnight sounds awful – plus i love to get in early morning runs and you can’t do that hungover! my plans are movies in my pjs with the bf! 🙂

  3. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says

I would probably fall asleep and not even make it to a party that started that late! We’re just going to a friend’s house who have newborn twins and a 4 year old for a low-key night since they can’t really do anything crazy. I always have grand ambitions for New Year’s but it always ends up low key/lame, however you want to look at it 😉

  4. katie @KatieDid says

I never make new years plans until the day before or day of, I don’t like binding myself into anything too early lol. But will probably be going to some bars downtown and just hanging out with friends in general. Love your reasonings for all the breakfast ideas!

  5. Sarah the offical CCK drooler says

we are going to have a ” bring in the new year” party. No alcohol. Yup. we don’t drink. I feel bad for people driving the next day though… all those drunk people, ugh! Way off topic- but if you are drinking that night don’t go driving the next day, plz. anyway, can’t wait to see the ball drop. 3, 2, 1… it’s the last year on earth LOL. Have a great day 🙂

  6. Rachael @ Ready to Get Sweaty says

I absolutely love how you incorportated what each food brings for a “lucky new year” – such a great idea.
No plans yet for new years…I typically don’t even make it until 12pm – lame I know. Have a great time playing scrabble with your roommate and Happy New Year!

  7. Anna @ The Guiltless Life says

So interesting, I had read an article just yesterday on lucky foods for the NY – I love the idea of full circle and the five-pointed star inside an apple.

NY Eve plans – I generally dislike NY Eve, I promise I’m not a Grinch, I just find there’s too much pressure around it! And everything costs so much! If a friend is throwing a party that is the best time, and then I’ll go out – but a lot of my friends are out of town this NY Eve so instead we’re doing a family dinner at a super nice restaurant where we can see the NY in.

  8. Ashley says

Those all look fantastic! I’ve been meaning to try out that Eggnog spice cake and Cinnamon roll pie! Maybe in the new year, ill get too it!
For new years I think I’m just going to go out with some friends. Maybe grab a bite to eat and go bowling? Not sure yet!

  9. Elisabetta says

A friend of mine invited me and other friends at her home, and everybody will bring there something to eat. I’ll prepare a savory cake (I’m still looking for the right recipe) and a deep and gooey chocolate cake I’m sure my friends will love! Hopefully … 🙂
Chocolate chip banana bread will be perfect for my first 2012 breakfast!

  10. David says

The spice cake and cinnamon roll links are not working. Thanks for all of the great posts this year Katie — you’ve revolutionized my desserts!

  11. Sarah says

With an 8 month old who wakes every hour or two throughout the night and a 2 year old who starts the day at 5.30am there’s no way I’ll voluntarily stay up until midnight! New years has been a non event for the last few years, maybe next time we’ll send the boys to their grandparents and do something 🙂

  12. Leigh says

Chocolate-chip banana bread sounds perfect for breakfast! 🙂
Still been meaning to try the cinnamon roll deep dish!! Thanks for posting!

This year, looks like New Years will be quiet. I was hoping to get away and watch fireworks at the Space Needle, far far away from the crowds. Have a great new years eve!

  13. Char @ www.charskitchen.ca says

mmmmm breakfast is my favourite reason to get up 😀 I always make it taste like a treat.

Dallas and I were invited to a friend’s house for New Year’s, and I am definitely bringing treats (and champagne, and brandy, haha)! Enjoy your New Year’s, Katie! 😀

  14. vogelstar says

I have to work New Years Eve 🙁 but we are having a potluck at work and I plan to make the rice crispy treats. The good thing is that when midnight hits, we have the best and warmest view in the house of the fireworks show. Here’s to ringing in the new year by seeing the positive in whatever life presents.

  15. ~Jessica~ says

I made the Cinnamon Roll Pie yesterday and had it for breakfast this morning 😀 I must have been psychic hehe. It was absolutely wonderful – I may have to dedicate an entire post to it *scuttles off to blog*.

Have fun at your NYE party!

Oh, and randomly, I’ve seen some of the negativity you’ve been getting recently and I’m so sorry you’re on the receiving end of some speculation and wrath, in some cases. I can’t speak for everyone but I love your recipes to bits, and whatever goes on with you personally has no bearing on the merit of your creations, and on the general content of the blog, which I always enjoy. People can ‘see’ whatever they want to, and personally I’d place your blog streets ahead of, say, Hungry Girl, which relies on chemical subsitutes for anything and everything. Literally anything can be enabling if people want it to be, and if they’re in a certain mindset. Don’t let negative remarks get you down, or take the shine of the enjoyment you get out of running, or the rest of your lfe.

    xxx

  16. Heather @ Run Eat Play says

Your recipes look awesome! I always get together with my family for New Year’s. This year we’re dressing up fancy and going out to dinner. Then we always go back to my dads for ice cream, games, and some drinks!

  17. Holly - InspirationBeauty says

    Hey Katie!

Great post 🙂 It’s my birthday today, I’m now finally 18 🙂 I can now legally go out for drinks 🙂 (I live in Ireland )

Anyway, just wanted to say that for my
Birthday breakfast I had your banana pancakes and they were delicious! Thank you 🙂

  18. Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine says

Unfortunately, I just got my wisdom teeth removed, so it’s looking like NYE will be a low-key affair. Oh well, c’est la vie 🙂

  19. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says

Plans for New Years…not sure yet. Probably nothing too special. We have a 4 year old and they don’t know whether Jan 1st is a sleep in day, a wake up early day, or just any other day…and so whatever we do, drinking, hangover, or otherwise, we will still be parents and up with the sun…so, probably nothing too crazy here 🙂

  20. Jenny@HealthyMOChick says

I’ll take one of each please 🙂 My daughter and I will be in Jefferson City at my sisters to celebrate both Christmas and New Years all at one time. Hope your party is all kinds of fun.

  21. Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free says

I’m going to a party on New Year’s Eve….but it definitely stars much earlier than 10:30! I’ll actually probably leave by 11 because I am NOT a night person at all!

  22. Nancy says

to celebrate the new year, I’m going to try the vegan lifestyle – I’m very excited, but nervous too. Any tips on how to ease into it?
Love your blog and have archived several recipes – you are an inspiration!
    Happy New Year 🙂

  23. Chelsea @whatyoucouldhavebeen says

Mmm, I think I want to make the cobbler on New Year’s Eve. I have a feeling it will taste better the next morning after it’s reheated. Then, I won’t have to do anything but microwave it since I’m likely to be exhausted.
My bible study family is having a glow-in-the-dark party. Fog machines, black lights, highlighter markers, and loud music. It’s going to be a blast.

BTW, readers, I have a new blog, check it out if you have a minute.

  24. Kit-Kat says

Oh we’ll obably just hang out atthe house, and play card games, watch a movie, and wait until midnight when we can watch the fireworks display at the Seattle Space Needle on TV. Not very exciting, but New Years Day is more fun for us 🙂

  25. Moni'sMeals says

wow, that is getting things started late for a party but I am on grandma time so do not listen to me. 🙂

I will be trying one of these yummy breakfast ideas of yours that’s for sure. 🙂 Thanks Katie and Happy 2012!

  26. Kristin @ FoodFash says

Your pear vanilla breakfast cobbler looks AMAZING!!! I’ll have to test that out after green smoothie cleansing is over 🙂

  27. Carrie says

Katie — I discovered your blog a few weeks ago, and I’ve become a huge fan! I love your approach to food and eating. For New Year’s Eve, I made your homemade graham crackers, along with the sugar-free chocolate cookie dough dip and the sugar-free brownie batter dip — yum!! My husband and I are always looking for healthy recipes to fuel our triathlon training, so these were a huge hit. Thanks so much for all of the great recipes!

  28. Kristen says

I have to say thanks! Last minute, I discovered I had no flour in my pantry, so the vegan chocolate cookie recipe I was going to make for a NYE party was suddenly out the window and I had NO time to go get stuff. CCK to the rescue! I made cookie dough babies in like 5 minutes, it was so easy and everyone loved them and thought they were so cute! Awesome & easy!
    Happy New Year!

  29. Becky says

We made the cinnamon roll pie for new year’s. Yum! My two year old is loving all of your recipes, and I love that I get to sneak some extra plant-based protein in his diet. Now if only his grandmother hadn’t taught him to ask for whipped cream on all of his desserts…

Thank you! And keep it up.

  30. lisa says

i made your cinnamon roll pie yesterday for the first time and it was delicious. i put the batter into a muffin pan for easier individual breakfast servings. thanks katie for the recipe!
