Chocolate Silk Smoothie

This is one thick smoothie…

strawberry protein shake

It’s so thick you might want to skip the glass… and use a spoon!

Chocolate soup?

strawberry protein shake

Meeting my vegetable requirements for the day is never a problem. (Sometimes I have to make sure I don’t get too many!) Therefore I don’t normally seek out fortified products like powdered vegetable drink mixes. But when the Barleans company asked if I wanted to test their new Chocolate Silk green powder… well, they did say the magic word:

And I do love the company’s Chocolate-Raspberry Sauce.

So I agreed to give the chocolate powder a try. This powder really is good… and it passed the roommate test as well. Do I think it’s wise to substitute powder for actual greens in one’s diet? Probably not; but with antioxidants, probiotics, fiber, and protein, this mix would be great for someone who routinely falls short on the recommended servings of leafy greens. And it’s also great for someone like me—who couldn’t care less about the nutritional benefits and just enjoys the chocolatey taste.

strawberry protein shake

As stated earlier, this recipe makes one really thick smoothie!

Chocolate Silk Smoothie

(Serves 1)

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries (or other berries) (150 grams)
  • 1 heaping tablespoon (6-8 grams) Chocolate Silk greens (Or you can use regular cocoa powder, and add sweetener to taste.)
  • 3-6 tablespoons milk of choice (or even more, depending on whether you want a drink or chocolate soup!)
  • 1/16 tsp salt

Combine everything in a vita-mix or high-powered blender, and blend until smooth. Note: The recipe will be darker (and thicker!) than in the photos. The photos are of the powder mixed with almond milk, because I only made the strawberry recipe yesterday and didn’t have time for a photoshoot. But I still wanted to post the recipe along with the review of the Chocolate Silk greens.

Chocolate soup > chicken noodle!

(Is there a math symbol for “way greater than”?)

I think it would be really good in my Hot Chocolate Cookies!

My favorite is sugar snap peas!

  2. Jennifer says:

I’ve been venturing into the world of protein & green powders of late. While I don’t mind the natural flavored ones and chocolate ones would definitely be a treat. I’m thinking a chocolate greens powder smoothie with banana would hit the spot. Luckily I love myself some spinach anyway any how so I never have to feel I’m choking down my veggies.

  3. Aurora says:

Favorite green veggie? Hummmm. Either cucumbers or peas.

  4. the surfer says:

AH! so beet GREENS… an anomaly to me until just recently. I love beets and I have buy these beautiful beets from a man at the local farmers market but those greens just kept stumping me on what I could do with them. I hate wasting food (especially fruits and veggies) and I try to use the entire produce and through away as little as possible.
First, I tried my own recipe: stuffed beet greens. I made a multigrain bean mixture and then constructed little veggie “burritos”. These were ok, but not amazing.
Then… oh my goodness… then I came across a recipe for beet green pesto (minus the cheese and substituted cashews) = AMAZING. I think I love this jsut as much as regular pesto.

What would I do with this stuff if I win? Easy. I would try scoops of this in every meal I could possibly think of and invent. For example, oatmeal.. chocolate fig and blueberry oatmeal. OR, chocolate coconut banana smoothie. ORRR chocolate pesto (hey, it could work).

I would go crazy with this stuff.

    Thank you for the giveaways!

  5. Emily says:

I LOVE broccoli. Absolutely adore it. Brussels are a close second, though! Funny to think I grew up hating both, as most kids do – that’s because I only ever had them steamed and plain. It’s amazing what a couple minutes in a hot oven will do.

  6. Toni Long says:

I’d have to say fresh cucumber (on toasted Ezekial with veganaise) is probably my favorite and I love asparagus. But what I have everyday is spinach, cause it’s so good for me!!

I’d use the chocolate greens in smoothies, avocado pudding or in anything else I can think of. I LOVE chocolate.

  7. Elizabeth says:

I really love lots of green veggies. My favorite? I’d chose avacado, or cucumber, or zucchini. I would use the powder to supplement my breakfast somehow. I’m thinking it would taste yummy mixed in plain yogurt with some berries :)

  15. hanna says:

i love spinach, broccoli, and bok choy 😀

  16. Although I haven’t found one I don’t like, my favorite green veggies are Brussels sprouts! Just plain steamed work for me. Like you mentioned, I’m not worried over the multiple benefits since I take in a lot of fruits and veggies; I would use this mix as a means of making a healthy Chocolate treat blended with peanut butter and banana. Matter of fact, think I’ll have some PB and banana now….hopefully soon I can add the mix too!

  17. Christine says:

Kale! And I would use the greens mix for a breakfast smoothie on early mornings when I’m running out the door.

  30. Fav. greens: There are these giant (and by giant I mean the length of my forearm giant) string-bean-looking things with purple beans inside a tender green pod that are AWESOME in just about anything. I don’t know what they’re called though but they are my current obsession :)

And I’d give the powder to my little sister ’cause she’s in college and I’m worried she doesn’t get enough greens in her diet ’cause she’s too busy D:

  31. TracyP says:

Would love to try this powder. Thanks for the chance!

  32. Nicole says:

I am helpless to the power of kale. Raw kale, kale salads, kale butter, kale in smoothies and juices, kale chips…it’s almost a problem. I recently found a recipe for kale bagels. That’s right. That is totally happening. I’ve been known to rinse off kale in the parking lot of the market so I can munch on it on the ride home. Maybe it is a problem…

Asparagus is by far number one with Spinach in second, but I am not the type of girl to turn down a veggie, zucchini, broccoli I love them all. I started eating clean in January about 90% of the time, (I still have a few drinks, on occasion : ). ) but, since I started I’ve lost 12lbs and reached my goal weight of 125lbs. The hardest thing about eating clean for me is the mornings, I’m a smoothie person, easy quick, yummy. I would be curious to see if Greens Chocolate Silk is all natural?? If so it would most likely accompany some almond milk and greek yogurt and bananas as my breakfast shake. Or I would make it per your recipe above! Btw, I’ve never commented on your blog but I really enjoy it and have pointed a lot of people you’re way. Many of your recipes are “clean” or easily modifiable to make them clean so I really enjoy them! Thanks for doing what you do! And let me know about the ruling on if it’s “all natural”!

  145. Grace says:

I’m home sick from school today ): I haven’t eaten since early this morning, and I was totally craving a rich pick-me-up snack. This did just the trick! It felt so good on my sore throat, and it was so delicious. I’m eating it with some of Stacy’s Simply Gingerbread pita chips, mmm (:

And I’m pretty sure this powder would go great in any kind of snack.I’d use it in black bean brownies, and your CCK’s fro-cho.
This sounds weird..but I love chocolate with cornbread so your “Totally addictive cornbread” would become even more so with this powder inside:)

    Yum.Thank you for this opportunity!!:)
