French Toast… To Go!

French Toast is now portable!

french sticks

Take your French Toast to work.

Take it to class, take it in the car, sneak it into your little sister’s piano recital… Just don’t blame me if people give you weird looks :-?.

Fast Food?

When I was little, Burger King French toast sticks were a rare treat. On long car trips, or if I had an early-morning soccer game, we’d sometimes pick up BK French toast sticks for breakfast. Yesterday I decided to use Ezekiel cinnamon-raisin bread and make my own French toast sticks:

French Toast to-go!

(serves 2)

Categorized here: Non-Dessert Recipes.

  • 1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk of choice
  • 1 medium, overripe banana (see nutrition link below, for substitution ideas)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/16 tsp salt
  • optional: oil or margarine for cooking
  • 4-5 slices bread (or cinnamon-raisin bread)

Either blend first five ingredients, or thoroughly mash your banana with a fork and then add other ingredients (excluding bread). In a wide, shallow dish, put a slice of bread into the batter and let it sit for 30 seconds on each side. (Don’t rush this step!) Fry in a little bit of vegan butter or oil (or you can coat the pan with oil spray if you prefer), and cook on medium-low heat. You’ll probably want to do one slice at a time, so there’s room to flip when it browns. Obviously, you can just eat this as regular french toast… but it’s way more fun to cut into strips and eat with your hands!

Got any remaining batter? Pour it on top of your French toast sticks!

Top with powdered sugar or Sugar-Free Powdered Sugar.

Or dip in syrup, or spread with peanut butter!!

Question of the Day:

How often do you eat fast food?

I think I was destined to be a vegetarian… Even when I was little, I never liked fast-food burgers. My favorite things to order were the Frostys, Taco Bell cinnamon twists, and McDonalds apple pies.

Yesterday I ate my French toast with this milkshake.

Completing the fast-food makeover ;).

    Yum!
I have been enjoying (non vegan) french toast for the past few days. It makes for such a tasty breakfast.
But, I think I like vegan french toast even more! I usually add some flax to the french toast batter for a tasty result.
I love the strips idea! Breakfast for lunch french toast sticks was the only lunch my elementary school served that I actually liked.
    Have a wonderful day!

  2. Alex@Spoonful of Sugar Free says

When I was little, I didn’t like fast food much either. The burgers were gross, the fries were too soggy, and the chicken nuggets were..ehhhh…ok…The one thing I did like was McDonald’s Cinnamon rolls….but they discontinued those anyway. I think I really only ate it twice. I can’t imagine eating it now, though! Talk about a sugar coma!

  3. Samantha says

OK, this one looks totally fun. If I try it, it will be the first vegan french toast I have ever tried, and I have been vegan for over 15 years! So I am kind of excited to play with this one.

Anyway, I rarely (never) eat fast food and didn’t really grow up eating it. A couple of years ago I did a cross country drive from WA state to Virginia and definitely had to get creative with some fast food options. I think more than anything when I want to “go out” I want good food if I am going to spend the money anyway. With more deli style options available in my area you can still go more fast food without the typical option.

    Have a great day! 🙂

  4. Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says

Oh gosh, I never eat fast food anymore. The closest I get is picking up salad from a local greek place, or getting a chipotle salad bowl. I can’t remember the last time I went into a real fast food place like McDonalds!

  5. Katie @wishandwhimsy says

OH. MY. WORD. Seriously, this is heaven. Who doesn’t love french toast. Katie, you’ve done it again…you’re making me hungry. Thanks for sharing this post.
    Wishing you the best,
French Toast Loving Girl (me, aka Katie)

  6. Heather @ Better With Veggies says

Do you remember the french toast sticks that they used to serve on the airlines? I seriously have fond memories of those when I was a kid – I was so disappointed when they stopped serving them. I’m guessing these are better, but it just reminded me of them. 🙂

  7. michelle says

I grew up on fast food….taco bell!! Del taco…and yes mcdonalds….my kids who aren’t anywhere near Vegan all hate mcdonalds tho…my 5 yo has never been..everytime we pass one he says oh that’s yucky food….lol
we go to Chipotle for fast food on occasion …think that’s it these days….
This looks so good….never had ezekial raisin bread ..maybe I should try it

  8. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says

It must be French toast day because this morning on Live! with Kelly, Kelly and her co-host made microwaveable “5-minute French toast” in a mug. But your recipe looks SO much better!! While I do eat eggs, I’ve never been a huge fan of French toast because it always tastes too eggy (and strangely metallic) to me. So I’m really excited to give this a try – love that there’s banana in there, and that leftover batter can be used as a topping!

  9. katia says

Mmmm french toast sounds soo good, always! I made my mom french toast out of leftover banana bread slices yesterday. Soo good! &Fast food, I never go anymore, ever . I can just make my own versions so much better, without the worries behind a fastfood chain preparing my meal or adding unnecessary weird things to my food.

  10. Suzie says

I love french toast and actually enjoy the vegan version much better– I love banana 🙂 Ya I am with you on not loving fast food all that much as a child, but do enjoy tast treats!

  11. Emma says

I actually haven’t eaten fast food in about 10 years. My family never ate it when I was young either unless it was subway or a coffee chain, even that was rare, only in hunger emergencies. We alway had the mentality that it would be better to go somewhere nice less often than somewhere cheap more often. I was really brought up with health as a focus for food. I am very thankful that fast food has never been a part of my life haha.

  12. Sarah says

    Katie,

I just tried making these then rushed to my computer to write a comment about them. They were delicious! I put a little vegan butter on them because with the bananas and syrup they were too sweet for my liking. I also added a little flax to a few of them and it didn’t change the flavor much. I’ve made so many of your recipes, but this is one of my favorites for sure! I will definitely be bookmarking this one. Thank you 🙂

  13. Sara Dane says

My “fast food” is running into a grocery store and picking up a piece of fruit or two, a water, and a little bag of raw almonds from the bins. I wash the fruit in the bathroom after purchasing and I’m in and out in less than 3 minute thanks to those self check out lines!

  14. Queen Mommy says

Up until the last couple of years, my kids (ages 8-10) didn’t even know what McDonalds was. We don’t do fast food often either, even though sometimes, as a crazy busy mom, I wish we would. Still, it’s hard to justify it when I know I can make a tastier, healthier, cheaper meal at home. The French toast sticks sound good. Maybe I’ll give them a try tomorrow. There’s a banana on my counter and Ezekiel bread in my freezer….

    • Queen Mommy says

I made this yesterday using my last banana, and I’m making it again today using pumpkin. I added a couple tbs. of turbinado to the batter (tbs. because I’m tripling the recipe), just because plain pumpkin is not as sweet as banana or pineapple. Also, used some pumpkin pie spice to replace part of the cinnamon. Delicious! It’s like pumpkin pie batter.

  15. Leslie says

I didn’t see this post in time for breakfast, so I made them for lunch instead! I loved ’em, and my little one did too. After she ate all of hers, she wanted to steal mine as well. I ended up having to make another batch! Thank goodness they were so easy to make :). And very kid friendly!

  16. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says

Ohh I love french toast!! I’m a little picky though when I get it out because I hate it when it’s eggy and only like it cooked all the way through! I love the idea of doing french toast sticks though! It’s been years since I’ve had something like that!

  17. Monica says

growing up we ate fast food a couple of times a week. i stopped eating fast food several years ago and when i try to eat it like it did a couple of weeks ago i throw up a few min after eating it. my body just rejects it, which is good.

      • meg says

oh i know… i used to love them but i dont eat pork based on religion.. i was reading an article called “the places you would least expect to find meat” and those pies were one of them. Lays regular chips also have beef biproducts.. I dont understand how companies can get away with it!

  18. Melissa (Better Fit) says

Looks delicious! I don’t really eat fast food, but I would if it was made like this 🙂

By the way- I made your no guilt cookies on the weekend and they were scrumptious. Thanks for the recipe!

  19. Justine @ Life With Cheeseburgers says

Cinnamon raisin bread? You must have been listening when I said that was my favorite when I commented on one of your last posts! 😉

  20. Emily K. says

Yum yum yum! And yum about a million times more. This made a great snack :).
Reminded me of the ones at Burger King, but even better than I remember!

  21. Moni Meals says

What a great breakfast or snack idea here. I am all about portable foods. I LOVE FRENCH TOAST too, how did you know?

Me too, only liked fast foods for the shake and fries or pie, never the nasty meat(or whatever it really is!). 🙂

    have a great day.

  22. Jacqueline says

YUMMM!!! I love the use of banana in this recipe and I’m sure it adds great sweetness and flavor as well. I eat fast food probably once every 3 or 4 months and when I do it’s a salad and shake (healthy combo, right)? 🙂

  23. Danielle says

I love french toast so much but I’ve stopped eating eggs and dairy. So when I saw this post this morning I was so excited! I made it and it was so yummy! I’ll definitely eat it again, next time I’ll make some cinnamon raisin bread to make it even better!

  24. Sarah the official CCK drooler says

My sister just made the pb bread- as in right now. Was it supposed to be dough like? The directions say that the batter should be poured, but it came out as a dough, and a little salty too? Quite confused!

    • Samantha says

Hi there! As someone who made this recipe already I can answer that mine definitely “poured” didn’t come out as dough. I made it true to recipe, using white sugar. Was there any modifications your sister tried?

As for the salty. I almost hesitate to write this because I absolutely don’t mean to be rude or anything but is there ANY chance you used baking soda rather than baking powder. And yes, I ask from experience on that accidental swap. 🙂

How did it come out after being baked?

      • Sarah the official CCK drooler says

For sweetener, I think she used honey. She didn’t make any modifications to the original recipe. The end result was undercooked (after an hour of baking !), which is unusual as our oven usually takes less time than is called for. Well here’s the thing, I told her it had a weird taste and smell. Not bad, just pungent. She got this funny look on her face and realized she had used cumin instead of cinnamon! 🙂 But that doesn’t explain the saltiness- I’ll ask her about the soda/powder swap.
And you weren’t rude at all, thank you very much for your help! 🙂

          • Sarah the official CCK drooler says

Woops! We’re gonna try it again today (the right way!) and I’ll report back 🙂 I’m not too keen on using sugar because my brother is on a strict gluten/dairy/sugar free diet, and I don’t have any of the other sweetners listed. Any suggestions?

p.s.- please keep the gluten free recipes coming! I have two family members who are on the aforementioned diet. Mainly my little brother has a speech problem and his doctor said removing these toxins would help. So your recipes are very much appreciated 🙂 Thanks again!

          • Samantha says

            Sarah! One more thought.

I was “researching” the earth balance coconut peanut butter and it had agave in it like a lot of their blends. As annoying as I find sweetened peanut butter, I wonder if it might be the answer to what you need? I know some sugar-free people still do the agave (not sure on him) but perhaps if you go that direction you won’t have to add sugar to the bread?

PS. If I had this peanut butter in my possession right now I would probably test this theory for you. 🙂

        • Samantha says

Oh gosh! I just totally laughed about the cumin! I am laughing with you, not at you. :):):) I have done some amazing “mistakes” in baking.

Have fun trying again today! I know some people significantly cut out the sugar the recipe called for. I didn’t because it was going for public consumption and I didn’t have time to play with it, but you could try cutting the sugar and seeing what happens? I just would taste the batter before baking. It is a great recipe and one that I will be trying again and again and again.

I was even thinking last night…I wonder if it could be made into french toast. 🙂 You make me want to play with recipe more. But I have to stay on task for my midterm. Good luck with it!

          • Sarah the official CCK drooler says

Oh Samantha you are super sweet! thanks for your suggestions- the pb one is a great idea! And my mom is gonna try it for french toast for breakfast tomorrow! Great minds think alike 🙂
And yeah, yesterday was a hilarious kitchen day for us. My mom, looking to thicken something, used powdered sugar instead of arrowroot- and it was for noodle casserole! 🙂
            Thanks again!

          • Samantha says

I love that you guys are going to try the french toast from this bread. I can’t wait to hear how it goes.

OK, the powdered sugar/arrowroot mix up is really funny. You guys were totally having a day for sure. 🙂

  25. Catalina says

Ironically, before this recipe was published, my mum actually made almost the exact French Toast recipe – with the addition of flaxseed and chia seeds – for breakfast this morning!
Even though I love the banana flavor that the bread absorbs, have you found the bread to be quite flimsy and soggy, even after it’s done? This is quite cumbersome, especially when you’re trying to flip each slice on the hot griddle! 🙁

    • Danielle says

Mine was a little soggy, so I cooked it on low for a while longer until the outside was no longer wet. It was still a little flimsy so I stuck it in the toaster and that helped. Still so yummy! 🙂

  26. Mandie says

I’m with you on fast-food places, Katie! Just knowing what is in the burgers and stuff makes me sick!
In the past I’d take a Frosty over a burger or chicken strips! I’d have a severe stomach ache though! (Sugar can really get to me – bad!)
The only thing I like at McDonald’s is their Strawberry-Banana smoothie. But I’m afraid to know what’s in it!

Your french toast sounds SO good! And Ezekiel cinnamon-raisin bread probably makes it even better!
The only french toast I’ve ever had was a baked kind that was really sweet (icky) and quite soggy. I’ll definitely try yours!

  27. Tiffany Nay says

Hey, I work at Taco Bell! (the irony of being a vegan fast food manager, lol) but if for some reason you come to little ol’ Idaho, I can hook you up 🙂 if only for the sake of nostalgia towards your childhood, haha 😉

    • Samantha says

I LOVE that you are a manage even. That is awesome.

In highschool I worked at MacDonalds! And I was already total vegetarian by then and hadn’t even had most of the stuff that MacDonalds served. There wasn’t a lot of job options where I grew up. 🙂

  28. Andrea says

I recently just started eating french toast more (I always forget about it!) and love it! I am not vegan but I LOVE this idea for vegan french toast! I am definately going to give it a try. I love all things banana, but your substitutions sound like amazing ideas as well. Might have to try a few different variations. Not to mention it would be awesome to be able to pour the remaining batter over top!

As for fast food, I’ve never had a burger from a fast-food place in my life. Even when I was little! They just never appealed to me! I don’t eat fast-food now… I don’t like it and it’s hard when most fast-food chains (at least in my area) are completely meat based. It doesn’t bother me at all though because I’d much rather prepare my own meals! Much healthier anyway 🙂

  29. Albizia says

I eat fast food once every few months when I really have no idea what else I can eat but I am not a big fan.

I don’t like the process of frying so I haven’t made French toast for years although I love it. Do you think it will still be good if I put the slices in the oven toaster instead?

  30. Anna says

I have never eaten a meal from Burger King/Mcdonald’s etc. It doesn’t look like food to me. Love these French toast sticks! Cutting them up like that makes them look so cute 🙂 Will be making them for a treat soon 🙂

  31. Em says

These look yummy. My sister keeps talking about french toast. I think I’ll make these for her 🙂
By the way, I made your no guilt cookies and they were really yummy!
I never eat fast food cuz they don’t have good veggie options. I do like the milkshakes though!
Can you make more recipes without a blender please? All of the blender recipes you make look delicious but I don’t have one. Do you have any recipes for people with colds?

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Hmmm… maybe any of my non-dessert recipes, like the bread-free vegan stuffing? Or… well, I’m weird and like milkshakes when I’m sick, but any smoothie or something with fruit for Vitamin C!
Maybe I need to post a soup recipe soon!

  32. Karen says

This was great! I halved the recipe, which made two slices and some “syrup.” On my first piece, I didn’t let it cook long enough. It was still great, but I wouldn’t call it portable. The second one was better, in that it was portable, but portability doesn’t really matter to me. I can’t even say I preferred it, because I do love gooey, undercooked treats! On the second one, I probably left it in the batter too long. It was dense. It formed a crust on the outside, but it wasn’t stiff like your picture because it was too heavy. I spread some pb on it while it was still hot. Yum!

  33. Alanna says

Looks like I’m alone here but I LOVE FAST FOOD!!! I’m an NPC bikini competitor and can’t eat it often but I love it and do every chance I get!!! I already have a list of places we are stopping on the way home from my next competition in 11 days!! all the sugar and fat and salt mmmmmm yum!! I love my healthy food too which I eat 98% of the time but I am no hater on the drive through lol bring it on!!

    • Samantha says

This was hilarious! 🙂 Drive through I think is just a lot less enjoyable as a vegan, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have my other eating out vices. And I totally laughed about having the list of places you are stopping at on the way home because I am known for structuring an outing around a great place to eat or known vegan junk food. 🙂

  34. Catherine says

These look amazing! Cannot wait to try this.

I never really liked fast food that much, like McDs or Burger King. I absolutely HATED Kentucky Fried Chicken. Glad that there are some healthier fast food alternatives today like Chipotle and Cosi.

  35. Valentine says

Thanks for the ideas Katie! I love almost any type of bread, but I hate eggs so I’ve never been a big Fr toast fan. I’ll have to try your version!

I’m definitely not a fast food fan, although I had the occasional happy meal as a kid. The big favorite around here is In N Out, and apparently they have a moderately healthy “protein burger,” where you have lettuce instead of a bun. Honestly, isn’t it easier to just prepare your own food and just splurge on an indulgence every once in a while?? The closest I’ve come to fast food as an adult is a pastry item from Starbucks or a Togos turkey sandwich.

  36. Sarah @ RunningChickago says

This looks SO good! I love how it was posted on April 23rd because french toast is my favorite breakfast food, and that’s my birthday! 🙂 I think I’ll have to make myself a belated birthday treat tomorrow… 🙂

  37. Heather says

These were a too sweet for my liking….but CCK was right on when she said they taste like the BK french toast sticks. I can say that I LOVED the batter:) It was great. Next time I am going to try this with my sprouted whole wheat bread to cut down on the sweetness. Since I’m a bananna fan, I’m sure I’ll love the bananna flavor the batter brings to the whole wheat. Thanks Katie for another great recipe!

  38. Sherlock says

This was a complete disaster. They were too soggy, stuck to the non-stick pan and they didn’t taste like French toast. Just like a banana with cinnamon.

    • Jenna says

Why would someone leave such a mean comment? 🙁

Katie, these were fantastic and reminded me so much of the ones from BK that I used to love and eat all the time when I was a kid! Ignore the haters. These are great!

      • Jenna says

P.S. The recipe specifically says to use oil or grease the pan! Don’t blame Katie if you can’t read!

        • Sherlock says

Why leave “such a mean comment”? It’s honest feedback. I’m not going to lie and say “omg these were fantastic!” When they were not. As for this “hater” jibberish, I am a fan of CCK. Unfortunately, this recipe wasn’t a favorite of mine. You’re incredibly ignorant to state that anyone who has issues with a recipe “can’t read”. The recipe was followed to a T and still stuck to the non-stick pan.

          • laura says

to be honest, even though i absolutely loved this recipie! i’m having the same problem with it sticking to the pan. any suggestions? (i have tried putting more oil/butter in the pan – still doesnt work 🙁 )

  39. Jenny says

Omg Katie. This is absolutely delicious! My bananas we still way too yellow so I subbed apple strawberry baby food. So good! I love all of your recipes. I just made your get well soup last night and it was a huge hit! You have made my transition to a vegan life incredibly easy!

  40. latisha says

The best french toast iv had in a long time! I used pumpkin instead of banana and it was amazing, it does take a tad longer to cook ii noticed than regular french toast, but so worth it!

  41. Hannah says

I made this a couple of days ago and, while it was not quite like the non-vegan french toast my mom used to make, it was definitely still tasty. Mine did turn out a little soggy at first, but after I flipped the toast I went ahead and split it up into the sticks in the pan which helped reduce the sogginess. Thank you for the recipe!

  42. Heather says

I am making this right now. I am so excited. The batter is devine. I’m using the Ezekiel raisin toast and also leftover Thomas english muffins (corn) that need to be used up. 🙂

  43. Celeste says

i used the pineapple puree and it worked wonderfully. But i suppose i let my bread soak a little long because i couldnt get it to cook thoroughly. but what i did try had great flavor!

  44. Taylor says

Katie, this is WONDERFUL! I just used this recipe with Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel bread and oh my goodness. Breakfast will never be the same. Thank you! =D

  45. Elizabeth says

Question – I have seen that you add banana to a lot of your recipes. I’m not a huge fan of bananas and I do see that you have alternate recipes without the bananas, but I was wondering, when you add them is it for texture or flavor? If the banana flavor isn’t that noticable, then it’s not a big deal at all! Thanks in advance! 🙂

  46. Anonymous says

It didn’t work. I followed the recipe exactly (With different bread but the same thickness as yours) and all I got was soggy bread and burnt bits.

  47. Souz says

I really, really appreciate how accessible your recipes are, Katie. I am not a vegan, but I’m very open to any food that tastes good, and looking for more healthful (and sometimes just EASIER) recipes to add my daily menus. You’re just so great at forming the recipes so that everyone can easily choose what they need for dietary restrictions, or just choose from what they have on hand without freaking out that “I don’t have this obscure sweetener! Will this work without it???”

If you wanted to get a homemade bread section going…I’m just saying I’d support you!!

    cheers!!

  48. Swapna says

Oh My Gosh Katie! You are a rockstar. I love your pages so much. I tried this recipe, it came out very tasty. Do you have an alternative to add chocolate to this. My child would try stuff if there is chocolate in it 🙂

  49. Teddy Angert says

I love your blog, too – you’re on our blog roll! I love to bake but I’m not really very creative, so I envy your ability to come up with new ideas. If you’ll forgive a little shameless self-promotion, you might want to check out our Mom’s Vegan Kitchen French Toast Mix – it helps you make delicious French toast in no time, and you can still put your own creative twist on it!

  50. Aubree says

Banana’s! I’ve missed french toast (I’m not Vegan but allergic to eggs and dairy). It’s nice to know I can still make it. I’m very excited to try this!

  51. Breanna Scurry says

OMG! I am currently enjoying the pineapple variation of this recipe.. I added unsweetened coconut to the soak and topped with a pineapple slice and more shredded coconut. HOLY CROW! … heat up the pineapple… vegan heaven. (I also added a little stevia to the mix) Wanted to report on my variation!!

  52. Odette says

Hey Katie! I tried making this recipe twice, and both times, the French toast ended up soggy and mushy. I followed the directions exactly: I used oil on the pan, soaked each side of the bread for 30 seconds, and even used Ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread (after my regular cinnamon bread attempt).I cooked them until they very browned too. Yours look so toasted. Any ideas of what I can do? Could it be the cow’s milk?

  53. Rachel says

    Dearest Katie!

I am almost on the brink of having to shout out lout as I continue scrolling down this beautiful website!! Your recipes are so ooo awesome and yummy I cant believe it!

But theres a still small overly curious voice gnawing on the inside desperately seeking an answer:

Are these YOLO-Meals or are these part of your everyday diet?
And if these recipes-fit-for-mount-olymp-itself are your every days bread,
which diet/exercise routine do you follow??

Sorry if I`m soo intruding but I´d please just like to know 🙂

Thank you very much <3 And keep up the wasome recipe making!!

    ^^ Yours, Rachel

  54. Melanie says

I made this for breakfast this morning and I just had to leave a comment! I was stumped on how to make a vegan french toast and flax eggs in place of real eggs are a total NO. The mashed banana worked beautifully and added a touch of carmelized sweetness to the exterior! Vegan or not, these are worth trying! My only thing is the batter was probably enough for only 2-3 of my whole wheat slices. The size of your bananas and bread slices may require you up the batter recipe.
