Copycat Dark Chocolate Crunch Bars!

Nestlé doesn’t currently offer a darker variety of their popular Crunch bars, which means they are missing out. This dark-chocolate version is richer and more delicious than any milk-chocolate candy bar could ever dream to be.

Dark Chocolate Crunch Bars

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup rice crispies (brown or white, or gf) (30g)
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (50g)
  • 1/4 cup virgin coconut oil (60g) (See nutrition link below, for substitutions)
  • Sweetener to taste (options include: pure maple syrup, NuNaturals alcohol-free vanilla stevia drops, or agave. I haven’t tried granulated sugar or powdered stevia in this recipe.)
  • tiny dash salt (makes the flavor pop)

Instructions

Combine coconut oil and sweetener. Stir, then add cocoa powder and rice crispies (If needed, add 3 tbsp water or milk of choice, only if using stevia.). Stir until it gets thick. Pour into any flat container (or candy molds, or smush between layers of wax paper or in ziploc bags). Freeze until solid, and store in the freezer.

What’s your favorite candy of all time?

We didn’t often eat candy at home when I was growing up, but I always got candy bars at the movies. I’d go through phases– one year it was Twix bars, one year was Milky Ways, another year was Raisinettes. And I never tired of Mounds bars or M&Ms. For sure, my choice was always chocolate. Didn’t even want to know about the Sour Patch Kids or Shock Tarts.

    No lie, I came to the blog exactly one minute ago for the sole purpose of opening the copycat Reeses PB eggs recipe. (Admittedly after eating one of the actual Reese’s PB cups…) I want to make this recipe so bad but I don’t have rice crispies! Argh. Definitely writing down to buy some… I’m excited 😀 That last photo looks so good!

      Tim Tams are the best! I did some work in Australia and I brought home about 8 packs for my friends. They were so skeptical that I had to photograph each of them taking their first bite! No one was skeptical after that.

    I love Crunch bars; I’m glad I’m not the only one who always wished for a dark chocolate version. 🙂 Can’t wait to try this.
    I like chocolate and non-chocolate sweets equally. Though I was never much of a fan of the American chocolate in general (being raised on Irish Cadbury…) Reese’s PB cups have definitely always been my fav. I could eat bags and bags of them until I get sick…… which is why I never buy them. So needless to say, your imitation Reese’s eggs were a lifesaver!

    p.s.- 1 vote for the healthy butterfingers!!! Not sure how you’d do that but you’ve done some crazy things before, so I’ve learned to not doubt you. Beans in my brownies, tofu in my pie, and cauliflower in my cake. Mushrooms in my candy bar? Heck, why not?
    It’s hard to amaze me anymore 🙂

    I used stevia and worked out perfectly! But when I first tried it, I added a little water like you said and it turned into a thick globby mess (yummy, but not the right consistancy). So I tried it again without the water and it worked great!

    It’s hard to pick a favorite candy bar…I liked twix, butterfingers, kitkats, hershey symphony and almond joys…but if I had to choose, 100 grand bars would probably win. It’d be awesome if you veganized/healthified it! I haven’t had one in so many years…

    I’ve tried the 3 ingredient chocolate bars with granulated sugar before.. it was NOT good because the sugar didn’t incorporate like the liquid sweeteners do. The bars are super yummy with agave and maple syrup though! I’d bet if you made a simple syrup (sugar + water on the stove) then it would work with granulated sugar, but I haven’t tried it.

    Katie, I wonder why do you use cacao powder with coconut oil if it melts easily; why don’t you use just melted chocolate? I think it would turn better results as you would be able to take the chocolate out of the fridge and it won’t melt easily.

    Maybe is my coconut oil that melts straight away after taking it out from the fridge..

    Thanks so much for this recipe! We’ve been missing a lot of old Nestle favorites since we stopped buying Nestle products. Their ambivalent attitude towards child slavery on chocolate plantations sickens me enough that I honestly feel a little sick to my stomach when I eat any of their products now. Even my oldest daughter (age 7) will say “no, thank you” when she’s offered a Nestle product for free! So anyway, I’m excited to have a Krunch bar that is fair-trade and healthy! Hurray!

      I’m feeling the same way about Hershey’s right now. I’ve stopped buying their cocoa powder because learning about the slave trade just sickens me. The fact that in this day and age it’s still going on…

      I’m actually writing a post about it, to try and get the word out. Fair-trade chocolate is much more expensive… probably because they actually PAY their workers 🙁

        I’ve actually been praying that you would raise awareness about this. You have such a good audience for making a difference in this area. I’ll keep praying that you will be given the right words to ignite sympathy, indignation, and action. Some of our closest friends adopted children from Liberia, and the oldest was old enough to still remember friends who were stolen from Liberia and taken to Ivory Coast to work as slaves on the chocolate plantations. It was his biggest fear until he was adopted. He’s 11 now and very adamantly refuses to touch any chocolate that isn’t fair-trade because it could have been him and it might be one of his friends. Knowing him is certainly enough to make our family quite willing to pay the extra for fair-trade!

          Wow Tina that is so terrible I didn’t know they were kidnapping kids. Can you recommend some fair trade cocoa? I’ve never seen any in the grocery store, but I will never buy nestle or hershey again.

            Jen, I live overseas, so I’m sure Katie or others will be more help to you, but when I’m in the States, I’ve found it’s usually cheaper to buy fair-trade cocoa powder online. Amazon has some as well as many other sites – you have to shop around to get the best deal but you can get some good deals, especially if you’re willing to buy in bulk. However, it’s always more expensive than Hershey or Nestle, I’m sorry to say. Ghirardelli, as I understand it, has at least come out several times recognizing the problem and says they are taking action to try to change things and to make sure none of their cocoa is coming from slave sources, which is better than Nestle, so in a pinch, I’ll use theirs. If you do a search for “dark side of chocolate,” you can find more info.

            I’m fairly sure the brand Katie uses that is fair-trade is Dagoba… Never seen that one myself at the regular grocery store, but maybe somewhere like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s (if not online).

    Hey sister,
    In the past, I know you’ve asked for ideas and recipes for things you can lighten up or make vegan. Well, I came up with one today that totally stumped me. Candy Corn.
    I know it’s not chocolate, but it’s one of my favorite candies (and those mellocremes; something about the texture of them is perfect), but both are sadly not vegan and *definitely* not healthy. So, someday when you’re bored and want a challenge, there you go… CCK’ed Candy Corn. 😉

    Katie, it looks great and tasty as well 🙂 You know, I have come up with a challenge for you if you would like to try someday… What about healthy vegan chocolate salami? :)) It is such a tasty treat, but in all the recipies it is loaded with butter or heavy creams, so it would be amazing to have a recipe without so much fat and maybe even with homemade cookies or a substitute for them… What do you think? Have you ever tried chocolate salami? 🙂

    Does anyone have issues with the caffeine in cocoa keeping them up at night? Last week I had a tbsp of cocoa in a recipe (from CCK of course!) at about 8:30pm and couldn’t sleep all night!

    I think Nestle Crunch bars are actually my favourite, so that gives you some idea of just how happy this recipe has made me!! I’ve actually just recommended your chocolate butter in the last five minutes in a comment on another blogger’s YouTube video! I use NuNaturals vanilla stevia because I think it gives the bars a real snap and crunch like a store-bought chocolate bar, and freeze it in ice cube trays … heavenly 🙂

    I also love Twix and Snickers bars: I consider them different categories of bar (with caramel/with nuts and caramel) so I can have more than one favourite, right? 😉

    I’m not sure what butterfingers are, so I’m definitely looking forward to that recipe just to satisfy my curiosity 😀

    I made these yesterday. Annnnd I ate half last night and half this morning.
    So good. So so so SOOOOOO good. Thank you for sharing.
    I doubled the rice crispies to make it not quite as intense (i love chocolate, but damn that was chocolatey!) and it worked out quite well. I also added a bit of almond milk and that helped to tone it down. You should try and make a milk chocolate version!

    Katie… I’m looking for a recipe mash up between your two recipes! Have you ever had Peanut Butter Balls at Christmas time? They are chocolate balls w/a rice crispy/powdered suargar/peanut butter blend in the center. Devine. Can’t wait for you to combine these recipes to replicate those… which oddly were coated in wax to make them shiny. We were told that little bit of wax wouldn’t hurt us. Huh?     Ahhh! Crunch bars were my absolute FAVOURITE growing up and as far as I know, you can’t get them here in Canada (or at least, I haven’t seen them). Amazing and naturally sweetened so I can enjoy them without feeling sick. Yay!!!!

    I made this using refined coconut oil and 3 tbsp of maple syrup. The syrup made it a bit too sweet but otherwise…delicious!

    Do you make anything like this (and your other desserts) without coconut oil? I want to make so many of them but I don’t have coconut oil.

      a lot of the recipes on this site can be made with other oils, but coconut is chosen a lot of the time because it has health benefits that others don’t. I think this recipe works with coconut oil because it becomes solid when it’s cool so it keeps the chocolate firm. If you want to make this specifically, your best bet would be to get some nice healthy dark chocolate and melt it down to make the bars. All the recipes like muffins and cookies should be fine with regular oil though.

      Lots of the recipes can be made with other types of oil (I often use Canola for the breakfast items and baked goods), but for the chocolate bars you really need coconut oil. You can order through Amazon if you can’t find it locally!

    This whole website of yours is basically everything I have been looking for since I became vegan about seven years ago.     I love wonka bars…they’re rather addictive. The good thing is that they are very simple to make…just break up graham crackers into small pieces and mix into chocolate the way you do with this chocolate bar and the rice crispies. Clodhoppers are very similar to those as well, except they’re in clusters instead of bar form…the package for those actually have a warning saying they’re addictive lol.

    I wish i could find a recipe for a home made coffee crisp though, it’s my other favourite but i’ve never seen a recipe floating around.

    This is about the 5th recipe i’ve made of yours.. awesome! But I do have a sweet tooth and i only put about 1 tsp of agave in it.. I wasnt sure exactly how much to try to mix in. I do wish they were sweeter but I snuck 5 little chocolate chips in which sufficed. Thanks again for the awesome recipes.. they completely overwhelm my pinterest pins!!

    As much as I love coconut, I won’t say Bounty is my favorite candy bar. Even after they made a dark chocolate version in Europe a while back. Twix will always be my number one treat because of all the childhood memories attached to it that always come back to life when I eat it. You should try to create a homemade Twix recipe 🙂

    Amazingness! I tweaked the recipe, replaced the coconut oil for melted chocolate chips, reduced the cocoa powder, and added a teaspoon of pure maple syrup. It is fantastic! Very chocolately and rich!

    I came to your recipe because I was having a chocolate craving and I’m off sugar. I remembered the original 3 ingredient chocolate bar recipe (which I made and loved). Then I saw this. I didn’t have rice crispies in the house so I added wheat germ, chia seeds, oats and coconut to give it some texture and crunch. Obviously a different end product, but delicious nonetheless! I also froze and stored it in the flexible ice trays, so I can pop out one cube at a time. It’s actually so rich that half a cube is satisfying enough.

    I’ve just found out about a new sugar alternative that sure sounds promising! It’s called SWERVE. Have you heard of it? Tried it?? Supposedly, it measures 1:1 for sugar and tastes just like sugar. It’s a combination of erythritol and oligosaccharides – zero calories – no artificial anything, none of the digestive issues like you can have with malitol, xylitol, etc. I just ordered it from their web site. Can’t wait to try it. Will be anxious to hear if you’ve been experimenting with it yet????

    I made the 5-Minute Crunch Bars and they turned out rich and delicious. However, my brown rice Krispies turned chewy. Is there a way to avoid this? Did this happen because I left in to set in the freezer too long? Because I’m storing it in the fridge? Thanks for your input–and thanks for all the gorgeous recipes!

      Hmmm… I didn’t have that problem, but maybe it depends on the brand or how many days you leave it in the freezer (mine never last long!). You could always try cacao nibs for a crunch that definitely won’t get soft. I’d store them in the freezer, not the fridge.

      This happened to me, too (although I kept them in the freezer)… I’m guessing in my case either the crispies were a little stale to begin with or the bars didn’t freeze quickly enough. Definitely worth another try, though!

      Was the coconut oil warm when you mixed it with the rice? That could make them soggy. I ate mine right away (all of it lol) and they didn’t turn soggy – so also it could be the length they spent in freezer?!

    Had to try these and a funny thing happened on the way to the freezer, part of them didn’t make it. While still warm we got the grand idea to put some of the mix on top of our ice cream. Oh My Goodies was it yummy! It made a ‘magic shell’ topping that we both loved. The rest went in the freezer but some how it too even after frozen ended up being added to ice cream!

    This is the first (of many I hope) recipes of yours I’ve tried. It was good! I used powdered stevia (I melted it with the coconut oil). I’m still getting used to coconut oil. I have a tendacy to eat huge portions of foods that are healthier for me (than a processed Nestle Bar for example). I think dried cranberries or cherries might stick and could be good in this! Next up – pumpkin oatmeal!!

    Needed some chocolate so I decided to finally try one of the recipes. I did not have liquid sweetener. FYI the granulated stuff doesn’t work so well. I used Splenda, and it was very grainy. After I made it, my husband told me I should just make my own liquid sweetener with water and sugar. Of Course!!!! that’s why I keep him around 🙂

    These were sooo good. I put lots of cocoa in which made them really rich and dark. Oofta. Could hardly finish a Reese’s sized piece (I poured the chocolate into the bottom of muffin cups and they turned out so cute!). I made a batch with powdered Stevia too and put some semi-sweet chips in. It made for a sweeter chocolate.

    My favorite candy growing up? Without hesitation, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I LOVE LOVE LOVE anything with chocolate and peanut butter together. When I looked at the ingredients in them at the beginning of my vegan journey, I was flabbergasted! Fortunately, at the time, health food stores began carrying healthier versions of PB
    Cups and they’re just as yummy. Actually better! If I decided to create a recipe I’d make them heart-shaped and call them Peanut Butter Love Cups. 🙂

    I just tried this recipe with an adjustment: instead of rice crispier, I used Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted grain crunchy cereal and some chopped up hazelnuts, pecans, and walnuts. It is delish. I used the nu-naturals clear stevia liquid as sweetener and Hershey’s cocoa.
    Yum!

    All of your recipes look amazing! Unfortunately I have several food allergies and intolerances so I cannot try most of them. I would really like to try your 5 min. dark chocolate crunch bars though. I am allergic to coconut is there something else I can sub for it? I don’t think vegetable oil would work because I am assuming the coconut oil is used because it stays solid at room temperature. Any suggestions?

    I am new to cooking with coconut oil. I bought some Spectrum medium heat coconut oil. It is very thick (looks like lard). Do you heat it on low to melt it before adding sweetener and cocoa powder?

    Question – when using coconut oil, it often is so flaky and lumpy (i store in cupboard). Do you heat it up first? Any tips would be appreciated. Im having troubles getting mine to stir in correctly.

    Hi, I may use this recipe for a girl’s summer camp me and my friends are running, but I don’t know how long it will take for freezing. I know prep time is maybe 10 mins, but for those who have made it, how long did it take you to completely freeze?

    I understand why you freeze this mix in order to make the chocolate, but after it’s ready, I’m just wondering why you store it in the freezer instead of in the fridge? Since this is essentially a chocolate bar and chocolate bars keep well in the fridge, why couldn’t this be stored in the fridge once it’s done?

    When I was younger, Nestle Crunch was my favorite candy bar, but now I no longer like milk chocolate (except for a Hershey’s Kiss now and then), so I’m delighted to see that you have come up with a dark chocolate version. It’ll be fun to make these because my husband has also liked the original but he, too, now far prefers dark chocolate. BTW, any sane look at the food groups would make chocolate its own group…

    I made this a few times and made the mistake of using unrefined coconut oil so I bought coconut oil and used it for this reicpes. No matter what I do even though I follow your recipes the coco powder tastes soo strong and bitter. I use unsweetened Hershey. I don’t know what I am doing wrong 🙁

    How many drops of stevia should I add? Will it turn out if I just use unflavored liquid stevia drops? Should I add vanilla extract?
