Chocolate “Protein” Milkshake

It’s the chocolate protein shake that tastes like a chocolate milkshake…

Healthy chocolate protein shake recipe with NO protein powder. It tastes like a chocolate milkshake! Recipe: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/09/12/chocolate-protein-milkshake/

And because there’s actually no protein powder in the recipe, you don’t get that chalky aftertaste present in most chocolate protein shakes.

You just feel like you’re drinking a chocolate milkshake.

Healthy Chocolate Milkshake

Yes, a chocolate milkshake. Hopefully I didn’t worry you with my last post.

Today also happens to be National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Chocolate “Protein” Milkshake

(serves 2)

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder (10g)
  • 1 cup Mori-Nu firm tofu (Click for: Soy-Free Version) (240g)
  • 1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • scant 1/4 tsp salt
  • up to 2 cups milk of choice (480g) (less for a thicker shake.)
  • sweetener of choice: such as 2-3 tbsp liquid sweetener or sugar, or stevia extract to taste
  • optional, for an even richer shake: 2 tbsp peanut butter or other nut butter, or 1 tbsp veg or coconut oil (If using the nut butter option, it will be even higher in protein!)

Combine everything in a blender, and blend until super-smooth. If you don’t have a blender, perhaps you could try using soft tofu and skipping the blending step, but I’ve not tried this. You can also try another type of tofu; however, Mori-Nu has less of an aftertaste—and my testers and I found that you can’t taste it at all in this recipe! As for the milk, Silk almondmilk works well, and I’m sure many other types of milk will also be good, but I can only vouch for the Silk because it’s what I’ve tried.

Do you ever use protein powder?

And do you have a favorite brand or flavor? I’ve never found a favorite brand, so I rarely use it. There’s a small packet of SunWarrior chocolate sitting in my kitchen I haven’t tried yet. Maybe that’ll be the one; but if not, I’m perfectly happy to continue without. Contrary to popular belief, it’s quite easy to get enough protein on a vegan diet. Here’s a list of some High-Protein Vegan Foods.

At first I though you where now going to be ” Peanut covered Katie” But, I guess that thought slipped away when I saw this!
The only way I like protein powder, is by eating the powder all by its self. 😀

    • leah says

hi katie! i just discovered ur website and im obsessed with it! ur really awesome! I already tried out a bunch of recipes. just made this milkshake for myself and my husband drank three quarters of it! Thank u!

  2. Jasmin says

I use vega protein powder sometimes…. but it’s so expensive and I’d rather get most of the nutrients from whole food sources anyway. This shake looks delicious. And I’m super excited because I found Mori-Nu tofu! Can’t wait to try out all the tofu recipes!

  3. Sarah the official CCK drooler @RomneyRyan2012 says

hey, awesome! I have everything so I’m gonna make it and be back with results! Do you think I could use banana instead of the syrup as a sweetener? I’m trying to reduce my the amount of sugar I use and I just had some syrup in my breakfast which was your cinnamon roll boatmeal. It was AWESOME. I put half the batter in then layered some apple slice tossed with cinnamon and then the rest of the batter and that was topped with the remaining apples. After it cam out of the oven…oh gosh. It powered me through English!
And I think I drank a gallon of your caramel apple milkshake the past few days. My way of saying hi to fall!!!

  4. Laura says

I use plain, unflavored/unsweetened brown rice protein in my green smoothie every morning. It is gritty and bland if just blended with milk, but the texture doesn’t bother me once mixed with fruit & greens, and it does make the smoothie more filling.

  5. Moni Meals says

This looks great!! I do use protein powder. Sun Warrior and a few others.
I can’t wait to try this and the texture looks amazing!
Happy national chocolate milkshake day Katie!

  6. Olivia @ OmNom Love says

I don’t like protein powder either. It just ruins smoothies and milkshakes. Your chocolate milkshake just looks fabulous! And the protein content is unbelievable, too. I have some tofu in the freezer that I might just have to thaw out for this. 😉

  7. Nancy says

I don’t use protein powders on a daily basis, but I do really like Peaceful Planets Pea Protein Powder. I have only purchased it in French Vanilla so far…and yes, I do love chocolate but wanted to use this in recipes so opted for a more neutral flavor. I have used it in some of your protein bar recipes and they came out great! It’s very tasty as a shake blended with banana & almond milk. It is green in color, but doesn’t taste like peas to me, which is good because I don’t like peas! Also no added sugar or GMO’s:)

  8. Andie says

This looks amazing! Such a great and yummier-looking version than protein powder! My mom makes me drink protein smoothies because I’m vegan too, (she’s not) but now I can add in the tofu instead! Yay! haha. And i love that it’s chocolate 🙂

  9. L. says

    Just whipped this up!

OMG it tastes like drinking a milkshake from McDonalds (well from what I remember) or maybe even baskin and robbins?

    Its THAT good.

    Your recipes never disappoint, girl!

  10. Leanne says

I love SunWarrior protein powder. I love both their vanilla and chocolate flavor. I haven’t tried a lot of protein powders. I began using PP two years ago and the SunWarrior kind was my first pick = bingo! I have tried hemp protein since, which I love as well. It was a more nutty taste to it, kinda like very finely ground up pumpkin seeds I think… This shake looks amazing! I love tofu in shakes! I make ‘m often for my mum; yet I can’t tolerate soy very well 🙁 So I’ll make mine with yogurt or protein powders (doesn’t get as creamy though…) With Love, Leanne

  11. Ashley says

I am curious what is on the edge of the glass? Some sort of sprinkles it looks like, but not listed in ingredients? I think it adds a special touch!

  12. Steph says

BeachBody makes two vegan versions of their protein powder “Shakeology”. Dark Chocolate Vegan and Tropical Vegan (which tastes most like strawberries and banana). Love them both.

  13. Marci Jennings says

LOVE Arbonne’s vegan protein powder in chocolate and vanilla! Brown rice, yellow pea, and cranberry protein is the basis of the protein and it is free of artificial sweeters and NO SOY, which is super important to me due to a history of hormone-driven cancers in my family. Best tasting protein shakes I have found, I might add;-). Love your recipes…keep it up!

  14. Laura M says

This sounds delicious! Most of my protein comes from food sources (peanut butter & almond butter!) but I do use Designer Whey chocolate protein powder in my smoothies often.

  15. Barefootcookingirl says

This looks delish! Can’t wait to try it! Maybe tonight!. In a future post would you mind giving us your thoughts on Tofu, Tempeh & Seitan? I hear some say you should limit soy products in your diet, some say not, the estrogen factor, etc. Thank CCK!

  16. Cheri @ The Watering Mouth says

Yeah, sometimes protein powder bugs me because of the consistency but I started making these chocolate protein bars with oatmeal, only 5 or 6 ingredients and they are sooo easy and have none of that chalky-ness. It can be okay sometimes if you mix it right.

I knew you were gonna add tofu to this one for the smoothness 😀 I know you so well!! 😀

    xoxo

    • Anna says

Was wondering if someone would name Syntrax! The Chocolate Truffle flavor is amazing, and I love Vanilla Bean as well. It blends smooth with no aftertaste at all! I also mix them with plain yogurt to make protein packed “pudding” for dessert!

  17. Kristen says

Completely agree- totally easy to get enough protein on a vegan diet. It actually kind of surprises me how often people ask that question though!! I rarely use the powders either… used to be in to shakes for breakfast or lunch but now prefer whole natural foods. Just wondering, do you ever worry about too much soy? I have heard mixed information about soy and phytoestrogens, estrogenic effects etc. Any weighing in on that? You use tofu in so many of your recipes, would be interesting to include health info on it.

  18. Kerry says

I love Dymatize Elite Gourmet protein powder. Ive had the chocolate, swiss chocolate, vanilla, and cookies n cream. All were yummy! Its smooth, not chalky, and tastes just like the flavor its supposed to be. Ive had the Dymatize XT, I believe it is, and I did not care for that. Definitely was chalky. I have at least two protein powder drinks, mixed with water, daily along with almonds or natural peanut butter. I hope this helps.

Also, thank you for this recipe. Sounds great. Ive not yet experimented with tofu but its definitely on the list of things to buy. Out of the two recipes Ive tried so far, the Flour-less Black Bean Brownies and Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie without Sugar, you havent disappointed! Both were amazing!!!

  19. Jen @ www.existentialevolution.com says

Oh this looks absolutely divine. I am a chocolate addict as well. I was just telling my husband the other day about using tofu in smoothies and he thought I was crazy. I bet if I didn’t tell him he’d never know. Thanks for sharing this. I made your black bean brownies last weekend and shared them at a family reunion…they were a hit, but I’m sure you could’ve already guessed that! They freeze and thaw great by the way!

  20. Andrea says

Your presentation is always adorable… sprinkles on the edges make it a hundred times more fun! I want to serve smoothies/shakes at a party sometime just so I can do this. I feel silly doing it just for me!

Is mori-nu a silken tofu? Does it matter if it’s soft or firm?

  21. Jasmine says

Will this shake keep in the fridge? IE if I wanted to make 2 or 3 servings to grab and go in the morning. I’m not sure how blended tofu would behave.

  22. The Better Baker says

Looks divine! I would gulp it down easily. I make something similar, but instead of tofu, I use cottage cheese. It blends smooth in the blender and tastes awesome…along with some whey protein powder that I have always loved. Thanks for all the yummy goodies you share.

  23. Brenda says

I use protein powder every day, Arbonne protein powder. It comes in chocolate and vanilla, is vegan, soy free and artificial-sweetner free. Best tasting protein shakes I’ve ever had!
    Thanks for the recipe!

  24. Martha says

    Delicious! What a fantastic recipe.
I do have a favourite protein powder and it just happens to be sun warrior. It’s rice based and raw, which I like. I’ve never tried the chocolate or vanilla. I just use the ‘natural’ that way it works with any type of recipe and it doesn’t have any extra sweeteners, which I find I don’t tend to need anyway.

  25. Jan says

Wow. As soon as I saw this recipe, I knew I had to schedule a task today that would be worthy of such a masterpiece, soooo, I did my first round of running intervals, ever! It was way easier to do them knowing I’d get to come home and have something totally amazing and dang, it does not disappoint. Drinking it right now, about to go into a coma from all the yumminess.

I haven’t been using protein powder lately, only because I get it from other sources. My smoothies are usually post-cardio so I pack them with fruit but some PB usually sneaks in anyway. If I do want to add protein, I’ll use some egg whites. I have used MRM All Natural Whey, but I’m increasingly sensitive to dairy lately, so I quit that. Really looking forward to trying some of the plant-based brands other readers are recommending.

Also, hello, adding tofu to a smoothie/shake is BRILLIANT. Genius milkshake!

  26. Camille says

This looks so good! I’m sad you started adding watermarks to your photos though–I mean, I understand why (they are fantastic photos, and obviously you deserve credit for all your creations) but I feel like it really detracts from the quality of the picture. I know the NYTimes does this thing with all their slideshows that somehow make it impossible to copy a photo, I don’t know if you could do that? Just giving suggestions so I’m not emptily complaining.

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Trust me, I absolutely HATE that I have to do it, and I put it off for so long… but you’d be amazed at how many people steal content from other blogs and pass it off as their own. Even with the watermarks, it doesn’t stop people from stealing recipes and pretending they came up with the concept, but at least it’s a start. But seriously, NOT something I wanted to do… I agree I don’t like the look, and it’s also a pain because you have to keep moving the watermark if you want to crop the photo. It’s sad that some people ruin it for everyone.

  27. Eric Jaffa says

I regularly made similar shakes for myself ten years ago.

I didn’t use salt or those exact quantities of the other ingredients, but otherwise it was the same.

  28. Tamara says

Hello CCK, I like to make a simple protein shake with a frozen banana, some soy milk, and True Nutrition protein powder. True Nutrition has an entire section dedicated to vegan powders and supplements. I use the powder thats a blend of pea, hemp, and soy protein – chocolate flavored. There are usually a few chunks of some of those proteins left at the bottom, but it isn’t chalky, and overall has a great taste 🙂

  29. Ali says

I actually really enjoy the Plant Fusion chocolate flavored protein powder. I usually mix it with a little almond milk, throw in some oats, stevia, cocoa powder, maybe some chocolate chips, and it’s like a little chocolate pudding :).

  30. Gemma says

I bought a plant based protien powder ages ago when I was trying some sort of high protien diet plan (terrible idea) lol. I can’t remeber what the brand was but for some reason I have it in my head it was made from some kind of pea. Even though it was ment to taste like vanilla it always smelled and tasted kind of like paper mashey mix (yes I know what that tastes like hahaha I was a kid, everything was potentially food), so in short I hated it and haven’t bothered with protien powder since, I figure if your eating right you don’t really need it. Kind of like vitamins.
P.s. made you naughty girl fidge this morning on a whim and I am so glad I left most of it at home or it would be all gone. amazing!

  31. Alan says

This sounds great and if you froze the milk it would be just like a chocolate frosty, or maybe even use a dairy free chocolate milk for extra chocolatyness =)

Personally I do use a protein powder but I am also not strictly vegan. I use Pro Complex by Optimum Nutrition, both the chocolate and vanilia are good but I gotta say I prefer the vanilia because I can easily make it chocolate if I want.

  32. BroccoliHut says

I’m pretty picky about my protein powder–I don’t really like whey-based ones, and I try to avoid soy now due to my thyroid problem. I finally found one that I love though–BioChem’s vegan protein, which consists of pea, hemp, and rice proteins. It makes for delicious protein pancakes!

  33. Ness says

Hey Katie. I made this for breakfast today. It was so fantastic, I whipped up a second cup and took it in for lunch at work. It kept me filled up all day. I love hiding tofu in food. I made a strawberry version for my partner and he has no idea that he is drinking tofu. It’s great xoxoxo
PS: Did you know that in Australia, Oats are one of the foods we are told to avoid when on a Gluten Free diet because they contain gluten? I only mention it because some of your recipes claim to be Gluten Free, and yet they contain oats.

  34. Sarah says

We use Forza protein powder, it’s on the higher end of the price scale but so completely worth it. You have to buy it at specialty shop, even Vitamin Shoppe doesn’t carry it. It lasts forever, tastes smooth, has no artificial sweeteners, etc, etc. It’s not vegan though, it’s primarily whey protein, with several additional vegetable protein sources added to increase and draw out the metabolism process. But we don’t worry about that – yet. That’s the next step!

  35. Mimi says

    I love your pictures!
Did you know that it is National Chocolate Day today? XD
I started the day off chocolaty with chocolate toast.

  36. Paula @ Paula's Plate says

Hi Katie! Thanks for such a delicious recipe! I got your post yesterday (I get your emails so I am always a day behind your posts:)) and I made the shake that night after work. I’m a bit new with tofu, and my store didn’t have Mori-nu, so I wasn’t quite sure what type to get. On a whim I purchased Nasoya silken tofu, which I blended up with unsweetened almond milk. I like my shakes sweet, so I added in a bit more sugar, and it was incredible! I wanted to share my slight variation in recipe for any other readers who don’t have Mori-nu at their stores. I just love your blog, Katie. I look forward to your posts each morning 🙂

  37. Ruth says

Looks delicious! I don’t care about protein but I bet it makes the shake nice and thick. Vegan milkshakes can be disappointing sometimes. The glass straw is really cute, too, I’ve been thinking about getting some. They don’t hurt your teeth? Or are you just really careful when you drink?

I don’t use any protein powder, I honestly think it’s a scam unless you are convalescing (or have a very small appetite and need to bulk up your food, but there are healthier and tastier ways to do it). I’m vegan and I eat probably 50g of protein a day in my normal diet, sometimes more, but I don’t make any effort to eat even a single gram. I put on muscle like it’s nothing at all, even though I’m a woman with normal hormones, and my hair and nails grow at a rate of knots. My husband eats the same diet and he’s tall, very active and very strong. Even if I were a freak of nature, I find it hard to believe I coincidentally married one too, haha!

  38. Amanda @ Heart Tree Hom says

I’m a little confused by this recipe… is there nothing frozen in it? And is the tofu silken tofu like in your Wendy’s frosty recipe? Or…?

My favorite protein powder is Metabolic Drive, tastes so good. Buy it at t-nation.com. Not sure if it’s vegan though.

  39. Kimmy Sue says

I have a question about your blondies. I don’t have a food processor. Can I use my blender? Beaters? Am I just plain out of luck? 🙁

Thank you for your amazing recipes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Camille says

I think for bean-things you really can’t use a blender because (and this is just from personal experience) the blade is so sheltered. That is, it’s only in a little space in the bottom, and a few beans gum up in there and then the rest of it doesn’t blend.

And beaters aren’t sharp so they won’t cut anything, which you need to do for beans recipes (and many others).

I saw my friend’s magic bullet blender and I feel like that could work, because of how the blades are structured, but I haven’t tried it.

  40. A.C. says

Looks yummy, as always!!!! Gosh Katie, you are blessed with such extraordinary talent when it comes to the kitchen! And my oh my were the sprinkles a nice touch 😉

  41. Mandy says

hmmm delicious! but have u thought of “expanding your horizons” to more fruity desserts? like maybe vegan strawberry yogurts/milkshakes, raisin/cranberry bread, apple muffins, blueberry shakes, chocolate covered bananas/pineapple/melon? i know this is a chocolate-based blog, but u r the best chef i know, and if anyone can come up with the best recipes for these foods, it’s you!

  42. Peanut Butter Bunny says

:O!!!! Oh my gosh. Katie, I hope you don’t mind I steal your birthday cake idea for my own birthday…
Lol, protein!!! I need to be more prepared when people ask, “How do you get your protein?” x.x I actually made the shake this morning! I saw it last night and decided I needed to get with the program, considering I didn’t know what day it was. D: And I can’t wait to try the sprinkles!!! Now to look back and see if I have everything…
Katie, I also have a question about your weights. I emailed you, but I know you’re a very busy woman. ^^’ How long do you use them? I know you lift 10-pounders (kudos, lol) 2-3 times per week, but…yeah. For how long? =] I’m tryna up my lean muscle mass. ^^ If anyone else lifts weights, I’d love to hear some advice from anyone else, too. =]

    • Chocolate-Covered Katie says

Um… I wouldn’t try to replicate what I do. It’s very unstructured and probably not the best way to see results quickly. I don’t time it because I do a set, then work on the computer, then do another set, then work in the kitchen, then another set… I really get so bored!

      • Peanut Butter Bunny says

I see. X] The way I am, I like to just do it and get it over with! Thanks for responding though, it’s like, wow, she responded to me. O_o *Le happy* 😀 I also wanna say thanks again! You got me interested in running and when I saw another blogger do it, I was finally like, “I have to give this a go…” It’s much. MUCH different than the elliptical. Now I even have a snack in the morning, go running, and come back to a second breakfast! Lol! It really is the best way to do it (or rather, the best way for my body). You also – here it comes – transitioned me to vegan without me even realizing it. And to a cook. I’m the kitchen’s worst enemy. XD Anyway, it’s been a tough road being vegan, with everyone’s horrid thoughts about it. But it’s still been fun! I mean…coconut butter. Tofu. How can one live – nay – why would one want to go through life with a narrow-mind?! Although I’m not sure the wallet wants to thank you. I’ve been dishing it out for the cashew and coconut butter, if ya know what I mean. ;p Anyway, yeah… Nervous about saying all that, but um, again, thanks for responding. =] Though just lifting a couple sets of weights sounds nice. I LOATHE routines…so monotonous.

  43. Cynthia says

I am so happy to have found this site! Ever since I saw the Forks over Knife documentary, and later fast food nation, i have been trying to make a conscious effort to eat healthier. See, i never had a doctor care enough to diagnose & explain the severity of my food choices, until i saw the documentaries and made the change, and started to see improvements. I admit, as a chocolate-addict, I was having a hard time with the thought of having to give it up, so I say again – I am SO HAPPY to have found your site!

  44. Mckenna says

I actually love using vanilla protein powder. I use it in oatmeal, protein smoothies, etc. I think the brand I use is usually just the Whole Foods brand or the brand-name at my grocery, but I love it 🙂 Very convenient for getting extra protein in

  45. Nancy says

    Katie,
I just made a pumpkin spice version, and I am hoping you can improve it and call it yours! I actually thought I had seen one on your site before. I used 1/4 box of Mori-Nu silken soft tofu (because that’s all I had), about 3 Tbsp. frozen pumpkin puree (I freeze it on waxed paper in 1 Tbsp. chunks, then throw them in a freezer bag), dash of vanilla extract, maybe 1/8 tsp. pumpkin pie spice (or your own equivalent), about 3/4C. vanilla almond milk, then either Stevia drops or agave nectar to taste. Yum! But I did think it could be better, I think the Stevia I used gave it a different taste.
Also, in comments before, I saw someone mention a caramel apple shake from your site, but I could not find it- it sounds divine! Please help!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

  46. zombieboyband says

I love you and your blog and all, but it is not at all easy for everyone to get enough protein (without supplements?! wtfff) on a vegan diet. At any given time I’m either powerlifting or doing some form of martial arts, and to fuel and maintain muscle mass, hell yeah do I need protein powders. I get that as a tiny person who is a runner, your protein needs are different, but the grand sweeping generalization of “vegan protein intake is easy!” doesn’t do the life style any favors. It’s misleading, especially for the athletes in the audience.

As a tiny person with muscles who hasn’t eaten meat in nearly a decade, I’m currently really into unflavored pea protein: http://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Pea-Protein-lbs/dp/B001DB4MFO

  47. Karen C says

Another winner! I made this for an after workout shake, and I downed it so fast my brother came in and was making fun of me, like what’s the rush? So of course I had to make him one so he could see what all the fuss was about. And he liked it too! Even after I told him it had TOFU!

  48. Shari says

Katie…I pinned this for two reasons:
    1. I love your pins, love the recipe and use it all the time.
    2. I’d love one of those Cuisinart Food Processors.

As a fellow Dallas girl, I think I should get first dibs!

  49. Whitney says

Made this up the other night…ended up having to use more stevia than I thought I would need (maybe I have a massive sweet tooth and didn’t realize it). I can’t find firm Mori-Nu in my area, just soft :(, but I added some ice cubes and it turned out deliciously well. More of a rich chocolate milk than a shake, but my tofu-hating husband was crazy about it. I didn’t tell him it contained tofu until after he was done (with his 2nd cup) and he couldn’t believe it. Thanks for another great, healthy recipe. You’ve got skills Katie!
p.s. Any idea when we can expect to see your cookbook on the shelf?

  50. Alanna says

Yummy! I made this yesterday to use up some tofu that was nearing expiration, and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! It seemed kinda thin right after blending, but I put it in the fridge for a little bit and it thickened up nicely with a fun sort of foamy / whipped texture. Only downside is my blender wasn’t strong enough to get all the tofu smooth, but the pieces left were really small and I didn’t mind them. I might do in the food processor next time to get all the tofu blended. Oh, and I added a little bit of instant coffee granules to make it a mocha protein shake. 🙂

  51. IC says

I have tried non-vegan protein powders and have never been a fan of the texture. I like sun warrior in both plain and vanilla, though the vanilla flavor is so faint that I would rather get the plain and add extract. Sometimes I add only a very little amount of water and eat it like a pudding. You can also use the plain to thicken up soup (eg, pureed califlower).

  52. Melissa says

This looks awesome!! Can’t wait to try it!! I use Xyngular protein powder, called Lean. It is the best I’ve ever had. It tastes like vanilla cake batter to me!

    • Shannon says

i usually use a drop or two with my single smoothies, and Katies milkshakes, liquid stevia is strong. It just kinda tricky with different brands to it can have a bitter aftertaste too.

  53. Isabel says

this is great! I added a little peanut butter and reduced the milk a bit, and the consistency is like no other shake I’ve ever had, sort of a drinkable pudding texture.

  54. Lauren says

I love this! Made it this morning to have as a snack this afternoon. It is perfect taste wise and the nutrition is just unbelievable. This is exactly what I needed as I do find it hard to get enough protein in and I detest all protein powders. I used Sweetleaf chocolate flavour stevia drops. I will be making this all the time from now on. Thank you so much Katie.

  55. Kelly says

Wow! This looks so delicious! I stubbled upon your website through AOL and love it. It gave me inspiration to give chocolate chip chickpea cookies a try. My 3 yr old is extremely picky, and I’ve been trying to sneak in some protein and other goodies in her diet with anything I know she will eat. She LOVES chocolate (just like her momma) and I have a feeling she will devour this. If she doesn’t, I will. 😉

  56. Shannon says

Going to try this today I, with avocados instead of tofu, I tofu but i can’t eat a
lot of it though sluggish thyroid.

  57. Karen says

Just served this to my 4 kids as an afternoon treat and they LOVED IT! This is the first recipe I’ve done from here but certainly not my last! Thanks!

  58. Susan Stone says

I use protein powder on a daily basis. The brand I like is Designer Whey, and I only buy the ones with natural sweetening: double dark chocolate, French vanilla, and vanilla almond. There is a new chocolate flavor that is sweetened with Stevia also, but I haven’t tried it. This powder mixes & dissolves easily, and tastes very good. When mixed with frozen berries and a little water, it makes a great smoothie. (For a meal I use 2 scoops of protein powder, 1 cup strawberries or mixed berries, 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed, and ⅔ cup water – in a Magic Bullet mug, to serve 1.)

  59. Yvette says

I love the protein powders by Dr. Mercola. So tasty and so healthy. Only the best organic ingredients. They taste nothing like those other powders. Many of them taste weird because they are laced with metals and other bad ingredients. Also, I try and stay away from soy, as it is a endocrine disruptor. I will try this recipe, but will use bananas in place of the tofu. Thank you Katie, I also enjoy your yummy recipes!

Mmmm… That shake looks exquisite! Can’t wait to try that out.

Yes! I agree wholeheartedly that a vegan diet can definitely be rich in plant proteins even at the exclusion of protein powder. We supplement with vegan protein powders- Sunwarrior Vanilla Warrior Blend and Vegan Chocolate Shakeology- as recovery from our weight-lifting circuits in addition to eating a varied diet full of protein-rich, nutrient-dense whole foods such as quinoa, all kinds of beans, broccoli, kale, nuts, etc. Overall, it’s just very convenient to incorporate protein powder into any bodybuilding lifestyle, plant-based or not. Fortunately, there’s a protein powder for ever taste profile it seems. Some people love brown rice protein, some love soy, others pea or hemp. Vega, mentioned by other commenters, has great reviews too. But my husband and I really enjoy Sunwarrior and Shakeology. I hope you enjoyed the chocolate Sunwarrior sample and you inch a little closer to finding “the one.” 🙂

    Warm regards,

    Hello Katie,
    Congrats on the Interview!
I tried your recipe for “Chocolate (tofu) milkshake. It turned out great! I used a tablespoon of PB2 (new powdered peanut butter) which made the shake “peanut buttery” with adding only minimal fat and it still tasted good. I wasn’t “crazy” about the taste of PB2 mixed with water because I missed the oily taste but it is good in this shake.

I have to tell you that I am now a tofu-convert! I will give vegan recipes a chance, but I would not generally be willing to try tofu. Well, I have tried a handful of your recipes to know that you always post great stuff, so I gave this a chance and holy cow, its AWESOME! Now, mine is not entirely vegan as I used regular skim milk, but I did use Nigari silken tofu and I cannot taste anything weird at all! I also added a little instant espresso and coffee to turn it into a mocha! I’m totally going to be making this for my husband to sneak some good protein into him! And I love that this doesn’t have protein powder in it, so I can share it with my 2 year old! Thanks Katie! Never a disappointment!

Katie, do you think if I use quinoa homemade milk would I be able to skip the tofu?..since the quinoa is a complete food and has all the proteins and aminos..??

I was so excited to try your chocolate shake recipe and I made it today. I added banana and sesame nut butter. Loved the taste but the texture wasn’t as smooth as I’d like. I have an old blender, maybe that had something to do with it! Can’t wait to try your other recipes!!! Thanks for your posts and keep them coming.

I use protein powder all the time. The one we really like – the only one we’ve ever liked – is Designer Whey (guess that doesn’t work for vegans, does it?). Texture and flavor are good (we use only the stevia-sweetened varieties). We especially like the double chocolate flavor. The one soy protein we tried, a plain one, was awful – could maybe use it in baking, but it was nasty, powdery stuff.

I added 1/4 tsp chili powder to a single serving of the chocolate protein milkshake for a little extra kick. It was REALLY tasty!

Tried to make this stevia-only (used 2 packets), and unless you don’t mind unsweetened chocolate, it didn’t work out for me. It also didn’t work out for me to not have anything frozen- it came out warm after blending. I only put in half the amount of almond milk to start, so I added the other half in ice. Then, needed to double to cocoa as it didn’t taste chocolate-y enough. I added coconut oil per the recipe to make it richer and then it ended up tasting like coconut-chocolate, which I didn’t really want. And finally had to give in to using maple syrup to make it sweet enough. I don’t know why others had such success? Oh well, at least I’m not out a lot on this one.

Tried this today and it was delicious! I don’t like very strong chocolate taste so I used the Dutch processed cocoa. It was wonderful and filling. Also after measuring the tofu, I froze half of it so that made the shake taste extra cold! Thanks for another great recipe.

  69. David says

This was a great recipe. I do not like tofu at all, but I could not taste it in the shake. I used 365 brand firm tofu from whole foods – they did not carry the morinu. I did a variation, which i liked better, using just 1 cup milk, a frozen banana, and just 1 tbsp peanut butter. It was thicker, and more chocolatey.
    Thanks!

Love your healthy recipes! I wanted to share what protein I use besides powders… Egg whites from Egg Whites International! They are incredible, clean and safe, and no flavor, so you can add it to anything to get more protein in, and it won’t affect the taste… And no grittiness… Just smooth! Go to their site to learn about this best source of protein!

Lean 1 chocolate is the best ever! You mix it with water and ice so there is no milk distress and add a half of a banana to make it taste way better than the ones at Starbucks!

  72. Stefanie says

Hi! I just tried this recipe and really enjoy it! I wish I’d noticed before though that it makes 2 servings rather than one; I was going “Whoa, this is a lot!” when I was making it. Still, I will make this again!

  73. Melissa says

This is my now go to protein shake recipe. I will never make another one except for this one. I recommend this recipe to everyone and I now even have it written down in my recipe book which is like an exclusive club all on its own!

I’m a chocolate lover too and something similar to this but without tofu. Here’s the recipe if you’d like to try it, I call it So Good (and good for you) Chocolate Smoothie:
3/4 cup milk (any kind, dairy or not or combination)
    1/4 tsp stevia
    1 tbsp Dutch cocoa powder
    1tsp vanilla
    1tbsp flax meal
combine in a blender and mix well, then add
1 frozen banana cut in chunks
    1/3 cup ice
Blend until smooth. Add additional milk 1 tbsp at a time until desired consistency. Enjoy!

  75. Hungry Heather says

Just made this and it was awesome! So thick and rich, it was like dessert since I added a dropper full and a half of liquid stevia. Mmmm!

Thank you Katie for yet another wonderful recipe!

  76. Amy says

I love this. I have made it several times in the last 10 days. The first time, I used coconut nectar. I thought the flavour was too strong. The second time, I used maple syrup. That was great. This time, I took out the vanilla and put in a splash of mint extract. It tastes like a mint GIRL SCOUT COOKIE. I also put in a handful of spinach, but don’t tell my (very hard to feed) son. He loved it! Next time, I’m going to try it with chocolate protein powder.

We use Vegalite, by Thorne. It’s is pricey but really good.

As always, thanks for the delicious recipe, Katie! I’m making your chocolate mousse pie with the chocolate crust for a dinner party tomorrow! You are the best!

I came across this recipe when searching for tofu smoothies. This is really good (unlike one I found on another site yesterday)!! I used the PB and like that added flavor. I also added a sliced frozen banana because I love bananas. This was a really filling shake. I’ll be making it often. AND two added bonuses: I read that tofu helps reduce hot flashes which I’ve been having a lot lately. Surprisingly this seems to be true for me! The other bonus is just finding this website. Great job, Katie! I”m excited to use other recipes.

  78. Jacque Claseman says

I’d really like to have all the recipes that were in this post. Like the Oreo milkshake, etc.
    Thanks

  79. Vanessa M. says

I used 1 3/4 c milk, and think I’ll try 1 1/2 c instead next time. Yummy! I could taste the tofu at first (I didn’t use Mori-Nu, whoopsie!), but the taste went away quickly. I used the 2 Tbsp PB , and mmmmmmmm! I would definitely make this again. It hit the spot for a milkshake craving. Great treat!
