I adopted a girl!

vegan turkey

Okay, so really it’s Batman morphed into a turkey.

(Sorry, Batman.)

Silly photo, but if it got your attention, it did its job!

Please, if you have the means this Thanksgiving, consider sponsoring a rescue turkey through Farm Sanctuary. Just a quick $30 donation can help provide lifelong care for animals in desperate need of love and kindness. It only takes a minute to help: Click for details.

Other ways to help:

It’s good to remember why you’re thankful on Thanksgiving; but I also like to help give others a reason to be thankful. So I figured Thanksgiving would be a good time to mention one of my favorite charities: The United Nations Children’s Fund, known as UNICEF. (It also has the Humane seal of approval.) The best part about this charity is that you don’t have to try and figure out where to send your money; they will put it towards the most dire situation of the moment. I’m a monthly member, but you can also make a one-time donation: UNICEF

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the US. And happy Thursday to everyone else :).

That´s so cool…I really love such things. Last Silvester there was campaign for bying vegan chocolate instead of fireworks, because of the noise which is really scary and unhealthy for animals.
Would I live in the USA, I think I would adopt a turkey aswell 😉

    Love

What lovely girls you both are! As one lover of live poultry (as apposed to a lover of them on a plate) to another – a HUGE yay to you Honey! xxx

As a vegan, I agree that animal rights are important. But I’d just like to point out that there are human beings in the world who are in need of food and shelter and education and healthcare and other necessary things. Might that be more important than saving turkeys? Just something to consider on Thanksgiving Day.
Katie, I think your blog is great, and I admire all the things you do to make the world a better place! Please don’t take this as a criticism. I welcome counterarguments.

    • anonymous says

Sorry, I have to respond to this, but I don’t want my comment to be seen as a counter arguement or start a long debate.

Anonymous, Katie did not say the two were mutually exclusive. She did not say turkeys were more important than people, and if you regularly read her blog you will remember that just last week she gave out links for places to donate to the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Please do not criticise someone trying to do a good thing, or ask for counter “arguements”. Why try to start an arguement, especially on Thanksgiving?

Second anonymous is correct; I definitely didn’t mean for anyone to pick one over the other. (Also, the adopt-a-turkey program deals with animal welfare, not animal rights.)

But I just edited my post for you, first anonymous, because you’re also correct. Thanksgiving is a great time to remind people of others who are less fortunate.

Happy Thanksgiving (or Thursday… now Friday) to both of you!

I agree. They are not mutually exclusive and just because we are helping people does not mean we should not help animals or vice versa. Secondly, I also feel that we often get very selfish in our arguments when we say that people are more important than animals. I mean who decides who is more or less important anyway? Come to that, if you start looking at it that way, you might even start weighing if the homeless people in US are less or more important than the orphans in Somalia and whether they are less or more important than the orphans in some other place and so on, with no end. I would say that do not interlink issues like this, just do what you can, for issues that are close to your heart.
Thank you Katie, for raising the issue once again. I am a hardcore vegan myself and I am so happy you are doing this. The photo is too cute.

Yay! Happy not turkey day. Vegan thanksgiving is the best! I’ve been following your blog for over a year now. thank you for your continued inspiration 🙂

Aw how lovely 🙂 We adopted 2 turkeys about 5 years ago who were destines for slaughter, and they are the most lovely creatures! They’ll follow you around, get upset if you leave them, the mourn if their friend dies, and ours love watching television! Anyone who says animals don’t have feelings are lying to themselves!

This is the third year now that we’ve adopted a turkey from Farm Sanctuary. They are a great organization and thank you Katie for promoting them. Last night, I made a few of your recipes for our Thanksgiving dinner (graham cracker crust with the chocolate pumpkin pie and your four-ingredient vanilla ice cream). Everything was delicious. Thank you for all you do!

  7. Lia says

The picture totally creeped me out, but the cause warms my heart! I’m so happy your promoting this on your blog and that is a great act of kindness. Cheers to you and the good you spread!

  8. Mallory says

I really respect you for using your blog to promote things like this (and like when you made donations to storm victims). Your humility is amazing 🙂

  9. Rebecca says

What did you get on your SATs? Im just wondering because I think your very intelligent and I remember you posting your story about not getting into Upenn despite perfect scores.

  10. Laura says

Yay, I’m happy to see you drawing some attention to the turkey adoption program; I adopt a turkey every year as part of my Thanksgiving tradition. Fun photo, too!

  11. Karen says

Hi Katie! So happy to have found your blog. Found it by googling “healthy vegan desserts”! So nice to see someone celebrating the joys of Thanksgiving in a compassionate way 🙂

  12. Lady Jennie says

I was so confused by that photo. 🙂

We just got our little puppy and he is adorable but boy it’s a sharp learning curve for us. I’m exhausted. It’s like giving birth!

  13. Vyvacious says

Hahaha. I thought you actually holding a turkey in your thumbnail photo! I was confused because I remember that one turkey barely let you get close to it! Haha. Regardless, I love any post with Batman 😛 Hope your Thanksgiving went well! That mac and cheese looked delicious!
