Cream Cheese Stuffed Coffee Cake

Vegan Junk Food

It might seem strange to see the author of “the healthy dessert blog” holding a book all about junk food. Contrary to what one might assume from reading the title of my blog, however, I don’t only eat healthy food 100% of the time.

And I don’t think I am any less healthy for it.

Maybe in a perfect world, all of the desserts sold in stores and at restaurants would be a heck of a lot healthier – with more whole grains, fewer processed ingredients, and much less sugar. Since this is not the case (yet!), we as consumers have two choices: never dine out, decline invites from friends, and only eat foods prepared from scratch; or eat as healthfully as we can for the majority of the time and don’t sweat the small stuff. If you live in a super-health-conscious community, you might not need to choose. And if you have allergies, you might not be able to choose. But for someone like me, who enjoys being social (and also who doesn’t always have time to make everything from scratch), it might be a good idea to follow the 80-20 rule: eat as well as you can 80% of the time and don’t worry so much about the other 20%.

I wrote more about all of this here: Orthorexia: The New Eating Disorder

There’s a difference between eating a healthy diet and eating a “perfect” diet, and if you are spending your entire life stressing over what, when, or where to eat for optimal health, it could be doing more harm than good.

Copycat Hostess Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

Enough babbling. Time for food.

With a streusel top and cream cheese filling, this delicate cake is reminiscent of a beloved New-York-style coffee cake. It’s a wonderful addition to any brunch or tea party.

However, as is clear by the title of the book from where the recipe comes, this is not health food. If calories, fat, and sugar are an issue, I’d recommend a different recipe, such as my Coconut Breakfast Cake.

best coffee cake ever.

Although the majority of people who read this blog might not be a good fit for the Vegan Junk Food cookbook by Lane Gold, I wanted to review it for anyone interested in quick and not-so-complicated recipes, many of which can easily be tweaked to fit one’s specific dietary requirements. (Note: I am not getting paid to review this book. Opinions are my own.) The book author’s definition of junk food is not “food devoid of nutrition” but rather “sinfully delicious” food. So really, the cookbook is more comfort food than junk food. If you are the type of person who doesn’t ever follow a recipe anyway, you might have fun adapting some of the creative ideas to suit your needs. Recipes include: Deep Dish Hawaiian Pizza, Taquitos with Avocado Sauce, Eggplant BLTs, Peanut Butter Cup Cookie Bars, and Sticky Caramel Baked French Toast.

As with many “normal” recipes (i.e. recipes that haven’t been given a healthier makeover), you can probably cut back on the sugar and fat in Gold’s recipes and still end up with a tasty result. However, since I was doing a cookbook review and wanted to stay true to the book, I made the following coffee cake recipe almost exactly as written. The only change I did make was to use ww pastry flour for the all-purpose, knowing it would be my own fault if the recipe didn’t turn out well. Gold calls for sugar in her recipe; I used evaporated cane juice, which is essentially the same thing. But if you’d prefer to use xylitol for a lower-sugar option, that will be fine. (As a reference: xylitol can be subbed for sugar in non-yeasted baked foods in a 1-to-1 ratio.)

Cheesecake Filled Crumb Cake

(reprinted with permission)

Cake layer:

  • 3/4 cup milk of choice (180g)
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (15g)
  • 2 cups ww pastry, spelt, or all-purpose flour (280g)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup coconut or vegetable oil (80g)
  • 1 cup xylitol or sugar (195g)

Filling:

  • 1 8-oz container cream cheese-style spread (I used Tofutti non-hydrogenated)
  • 1/3 cup xylitol or sugar (65g)
  • 2 tbsp ww pastry, spelt, or all-purpose flour (16g)
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

Topping:

  • 2/3 cup brown sugar or coconut brown sugar (120g)
  • 1/2 cup ww pastry, spelt, or all-purpose flour (70g)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup butter-type spread, softened (I used Earth Balance) (150g)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Lightly grease a 9×9 baking dish. Combine milk and vinegar in a medium bowl; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Add the the oil and sweetener to the vinegar mixture, stirring. Now add wet to dry and stir until completely smooth. Pour half the batter into the prepared baking dish.

In a medium bowl, mix filling ingredients and pour over the batter layer. Cover with remaining batter. Then, in a small bowl, mix together the topping and crumble over the cake. Bake 40-45 minutes, or until topping is golden brown. Let cool completely before cutting. Serves 8-12.

My favorite junk food is your 3 ingredient chocolate bars! I also loveeee Cacao Bliss on anything… if it’s on a banana does that count as healthy? =)

  2. Kelly @ Hidden Fruits and Veggies says

That coffee cake looks super delicious! I wouldn’t even say it’s THAT bad for you– if you’re going to eat junk food once in a while, making homemade “junk” with whole wheat flour is a decently wholesome way to go. If can also be a little easier to get people to give vegan foods a try if you let them be a little more sinful.

I have a long list of favorite junk foods, but luckily most of them don’t have to be 100% junk. I like cinnamon rolls, french fries, pancakes + veggie bacon covered in syrup and peanutbutter 😀 and DEFINITELY mac and cheese (with a crumbly bread crumb topping!)

  3. Cecile says

I really enjoy this post and completely share your view about “junk” food. I’m enjoying a sinful treat when I feel like it, as I know I’m pretty healthy the rest of the time. My favorite is a plain fatty buttery croissant (not vegan, I need real butter to make it worth it by my standards, sorry 😉 ). It reminds me my home country, France.

  4. Mandie says

Hey Katie, I totally agree with the 80/20 eating plan. As someone who has stressed/stresses over eating I can say that it does more harm than good – sometimes it just kills me! (I am trying to stop doing this though 🙂

My favorite junk foods are fudgey/gooey brownies & blondies, raw cookie dough, and cinnamon bread or coffee cake!!! Non dessert wise though, I like pizza 😀

  5. Ali @ Peaches and Football says

The coffee cake looks delicious Katie and I love seeing pictures of you on the blog. You should do it more – I think it gives the blog a more personal feel to it! 🙂

My favorite junk food is a cookie. Any kind, preferably homemade!

    • Emma says

I like the pictures too, but sometimes I wish the pictures of Katie were what she actually looks like around the house. (unless she actually does wears makeup every day and curls her hair every day, which would be crazy when you get to work from home!). I love when bloggers just post how they look every day, and not try to pretty it up for the camera. Though I can understand only wanting good pictures out there too 🙂

  6. Alexa says

My all-time favorite junk food is definitely mint chocolate chip ice cream…followed closely by anything involving the words “peanut butter” and “chocolate.”
Thank you for your post regarding Orthorexia. I definitely see myself having all of those tendencies, and it’s definitely an eye-opener knowing there’s an actual name for my constant worries regarding food.

    • Violet says

I used to be “orthorexic” – constantly obsessing over eating only the healthiest foods. There is something satisfying about it, and I was down to a very slim 112 lbs… I’ve since stopped doing that and gained back my starting weight of 125. I don’t look or feel much different except I have my boobs back 😀

  7. Sharky says

I agree with you that it’s okay to eat junk food in moderation, especially if not eating it makes you feel deprived and sad. Allowing yourself the occasional decadent treat can be great motivation to eat healthy food most of the time. My problem comes when I allow myself those high-fat, high-sugar foods every day. It’s very addictive.

My favorite sweet junk food is chocolate mousse. My favorite savory junk food is mozzarella sticks (and there is no decent vegan substitute, sadly).

  8. Anne says

I know it is soo seasonally out of date but I love stollen – German Christmas-type cake. Unfortunately hard to get good stollen outside of Germany and in any case never vegan!! Normally eaten with butter but I have a feeling it might just be delicious with coconut oil also… And of course one can have it anytime of the year 🙂

  9. Karen Jung says

Jellybeans! I sit there and eat until my stomach hurts, then say “I am never eating another jellybean again!” then eat the rest of the bag the next day

  10. Barbara says

My favorite junk food is definitely my homemade ice cream, or your chocolate chip cookie cake….wow actually both those recipes are yours, myice cream recipe is adapted from your four ingredient ice cream!

Although sometimes, nothing hits the spot but a McDonalds milkshake.

  11. Becca says

I just love ice cream. I have a major sweet tooth. I would choose dessert, ice cream, etc. over mac n cheese, comfort food, etc. anyday.

  12. Susie Kaboozie Ⓥ (@wackypig) says

Fresh vegan donuts, straight from the oil… well, maybe cooled a little and then glazed. I make them very rarely, but they are my favorite junk food!

  13. Kathy says

Oh my mac & cheese all the way, but trying to stay vegan, I try to avoid it, hosever I do lapse on occasion. As for the sweeter side, give me a big ol’ chocolate fudge brownie. Nothing better.

  14. Ellie H. says

I absolutely ADORE chocolate!!! I will eat some sort of chocolate AT LEAST once every day. Some of my favorite chocolate-y indulgences include chocolate cake, chocolate avocado cupcakes (you can’t taste the avocado, I swear!), chocolate chip cookies, chocolate milkshakes, and chocolate ice cream. I also eat chocolate chips by the handful. If I had to eat only one thing for the rest of my life, I’d choose chocolate. Obviously it’s my favorite “junk food”. 🙂

  15. Lily S. says

Quite frankly, I could eat every kind of junk food — I love it all. Which is why I have to avoid it, otherwise I can’t seem to stop myself. You know what I would LOVE to see? A healthy version of a Salted Nut Roll candybar. I’ve had it on my mind for months now, and I know it’s totally doable. It was always one of my favorites because it’s sweet and salty, chewy and crunchy, and just perfect. Do you think you could do this for me? Pretty please 😉

  16. Sherry says

Peanut butter and chocolate or peanut butter and ANYTHING!! Love my PB!!! And it loves my thighs …. 🙂

  17. Lynn says

Hmmm, that’s a really hard question because there are so many yummy things in this world, its really hard to pick just one…but I would have to say peanut butter, chocolate and caramel are my favorite things and I love to put this combination on banana’s, ice cream, angel food cake and anything I can find that would sound good (I’ve even tried it on things that don’t sound good ha!). I love to try new things and love the idea of your giveaway!! Thank you for all you do, I love your pages and inspirations!

  18. Rebecca says

I’d like to try this, but maybe with just some soft tofu in the middle…I don’t actually like cream cheese (or its variations). I love love love your site btw!

My favorite junk food is a Mexican fried corn variation called “Tosti-esquites”: a bag of green-chile-flavored Tostitos topped with cream, mayonnaise, cheese, 3 kinds of salsa, and fried corn (clearly I’m not vegan 🙂 ).

  19. Ashlee says

Ice cream. All day, any day. It’s my one true food love!
Good thing protein shakes take the edge off. 🙂

  20. Alexis B says

Teddy grahams, Annie’s bunny grahams, animal crackers are my prepackaged temptations (sense a common theme, here?), but as for homemade goods I love coconut macaroons, “kitchen sink” cookies, a good English trifle, and carrot cake.

  21. Ashley says

My boyfriend loves coffee cake! It’s so good with coffee. But my favorite “junk food” has got to be a yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting. Yum!

  22. Jessica Piekenbrock says

My favorite “junk food” has definitely got to be pizza! I think I could eat it everyday and never get tired of it lol

  23. Jennifer says

I can’t wait to make that coffee cake! But as far a favorite junk food – anything with peanut butter, but I also love fried fish sandwiches.

  24. Carrie Kennedy says

My favorite junk food is a donut! Oh boy…however the treats I make from your blog run a close second!!! Love your blog! Thanks!

  25. Christine says

My FAVORITE junk food is moose tracks ice cream – fudge, chocolate and peanut butter all mixed together just makes me so happy!

  26. Karen says

Oooooh that looks RICH! Would have to be a special occasion & saved WW points for me to eat that…but I’d like to try!! 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway!

  27. patty says

chocolate!!! I love chocolate, peanut butter, and chocolate covered strawberry smoothies, chocolate oatmeal w/ choc chips, etc. Not really a junk food eater, but if high in calories, fat, would be cheesecake.

  28. Linde says

My favourite sweet junk food is cheesecake! The texture and richness are just impossible to ‘healthify’!
For savoury I would go for baked cheese (I am not a vegan) and veggies from the oven, drizzled with olive oil and topped with fresh herbs!

  29. Megan says

Ooo I love cinnamon rolls too! Basically anything chocolate or I could eat goldfish every day. I don’t think they’re too bad, they’re whole grain! 😉

  30. D. H. says

My favorite junk foods….chocolate, popcorn with garlic and nutritional yeast, and GF banana bread (with chocolate chips!).

  31. Kinsey says

I would have to say my favorite junk food is mac and cheese (seems to be a popular answer!). I like mine with ketchup, which makes it even more junk-foody lol >.<

  32. Jennifer says

My favourite junk foods are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and french fries. This sounds like an awesome giveaway! 🙂

  33. Joy @ Caspara says

Yum!! This looks SO good!! I agree with the 80-20 principle. That’s basically what I do.

Regarding junk food… Gosh, do I have to pick just one favorite? Well, I’ll go with brownies. I love a hot fudge brownie sundae.

  34. Chelsea says

My favorite junk food has always been candy corn, but I have yet to make my own or find a vegan version to purchase.

  35. Pax says

Most of what I normally eat probably wouldn’t be considered “junk” food by most people, but I do love homemade cookie dough and chocolate pudding. 🙂

  36. Amy says

Oh em gee that cake looks bangin’. My favorite junk food is definitely trail mix with chocolate chips and m&ms! Monster mix it’s called sometimes! I could eat a whole canister and not even bat an eye….and go back for more! Mmm

    • Anonymous says

Omg yes monster mix! And then after most of the bag is gone I look at the nutrition facts and see a serving is 2 tablespoons!! Lol

  37. Jennifer Roush says

My favorite “junk” food is carrot cake, snickerdoodles or anything with lots of cinnamon in:P

  38. Pax says

Most of what I eat probably wouldn’t be considered “junk” food by most people, but I do love homemade desserts. Cookie dough, chocolate pudding, pie… 🙂

  39. Amanda says

Too many! I love bread and sweets though. Anything chocolate but I miss cheese the most so that Hawaiian pizza sounded so good!

  40. Michelle says

Donuts…especially since I was in Vegas Ronald’s Donuts is there… we ate too many…
I think I would love this book with those recipes…yum

  41. Sonja says

My favorite “junk foods” are vegan macaroni and cheese, coconut milk cookie dough ice cream, and good old mashed potatoes. Yum!

  42. Natalie says

Love gummy bears, cream cheese frosting, Oreos and cake batter ice cream!!!

Thank you for fabulous healthy recipes, my sweet tooth and thighs thank you 🙂

  43. Corinne says

Muffins are my favorite junk food! Jumbo, sweet, cafe muffins from a nearby “health” store– anything from coconut chocolate chip to pecan-candied-ginger to blueberry almond.

  44. Justin says

My favorites would have to include cinnamon rolls too also bananas foster French toast (yum) and ice cream 🙂 the cake looks delish! Might have to find an occasion (or make one up) to make it!

  45. Anonymous says

I love this post,Katie! I think it’s great you make clear that it’s not about perfection but enjoyment. Thank you so much for this,it really cheered me up today! 🙂
My favorite junk food would be chips. And you know what? – I eat them almost every day. Cause I just love them. So what?

  46. Rebecca Wright says

My favorite junk food would be…cookies or icing I think (healthy or not I can eat way to much of those things), non-sweet option is fries right now, I’m going through a fried food faze in my life currently. Drink-wise (not that you asked but just because) it would be chocolate coffee, anytime of day that stuff is good.

  47. Claire says

“For someone like me, who enjoys being social (and also who doesn’t always have time to make everything from scratch), it might be a good idea to follow the 80-20 rule: eat as well as you can 80% of the time and don’t worry so much about the other 20%.”

As I gradually create a healthier and more “whole” lifestyle for myself, I find it increasingly difficult to grab brunch (or lunch, or dessert) with friends–all those empty calories, all that added sugar and fat and sodium! I know I could be eating much more cheaply and healthfully from my own kitchen, and that’s constantly on my mind when I’m out to eat.

You’re so right, though–there’s more to life than a PERFECT diet. A nutritious diet should fuel your day, not limit it! And in the long run, what am I going to relish more–those memories made with friends, or that salad I ate alone in my apartment? 🙂

  48. Grace Barr says

I would have to say that one of my favorite “junk food” meals is nachos! I loooove lots of cheese and meat with all of the fixings on top of warm, crispy chips. Mmm!! Also I have a serious addiction to chocolate cookies. I had to cut down because I used to eat about 3 a day..I would LOVE to try out this cookbook!!! Thanks for all of your amazing recipes 🙂

  49. Alanna says

I love your 80/20 rule. 🙂 Since I have borderline high cholesterol I use fat-free creamer in my coffee at home, and whenever I’m out I used to add skim milk instead of full-fat creamer to be “safe.” But after a while I realized I didn’t enjoy the coffee at all when I used milk, and the small amount of extra fat I get from regular creamer on occasion is not going to kill me if I’m making healthy choices more often than not.

And my favorite junk food is probably ice cream, although it’s hard to pick because I love desserts in general! 🙂

  50. Cassie Vaughn says

Right now I’m having to hold myself back from eating copious amounts of peanut butter, honey, and dark chocolate chips.

  51. Sydney says

Vegan bananas foster with coconut milk ice cream served atop a crisp golden waffle. (Had it on Monday… amazing!)

  52. Niccicola says

Anytime I allow myself to have junk food…it will always be something cake/fudge like with an icing on top. Gimme butter and sugar, covered in chocolate, baked with brownies inside and I’m DONE!

  53. Christine Moore says

There’s always room for a morsel of junk food in well-balanced diets. That being said, my favorite junk food is ice cream.

  54. Angie says

CINNABON!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s been years and I still can remember how yummy they are! Thanks for the opportunity to win your giveaway! : )

  55. Caroline says

My favorite junk food is Fritos. If I’m being honest though I really just like to suck off the salt and don’t care that much for the chip. Does that make salt my favorite junk food?

  56. Kristie says

My daughters made the copy cat fudge brownies from the previous post, and right now those are my favorite because there’s a pan of them in my fridge! Thank you so much for helping me be healthy AND happy!

  57. CY says

I hope this isn’t offensive, sorry if it is in advance, but does anyone know if vegan ingredients can be replaced with their dairy non-vegan counterparts?
Eg can I just use regular cream cheese instead of Tofutti, and in other recipes regular yoghurt instead of soy yoghurt etc.?
I know this may seem counterproductive since I’m trying out a vegan recipes, but sometimes all I have is the regular stuff and the recipes here, I’m sure, will still be much healthier than others even with non-vegan ingredients?

    • Brooke says

I make CCK recipes with dairy products (yogurt and cream cheese) all the time and they turn out delicious!!

  58. Gemma says

I don’t normally post comments, but after reading your post I had to speak up! Good for you, for posting (and enjoying) this recipe! It can be hard to eat out, whether it’s at a friend’s or at a restaurant– especially down South, where I am– and sometimes you just have to go with it!

Especially when I’m at the restaurant that serves my favorite junk food: a chocolate mousse cake with caramel drizzled over it and an Oreo crust. When I go get it every so often, I totally eat the whole slice with no regrets 🙂

  59. Stefani says

This looks delicious! Pizza is probably by far my favorite junk food. Thanks for the great giveaway! 🙂

  60. Lauren says

My favorite is either chocolate cake, or fries with cheese and gravy, depending on if I’m craving sweet or salty 🙂

      • Anonymous says

haha, you would think but it is made in a 12 inch cast iron skillet and its about 3 inches thick with lots of butter and cheese is it and I get a huge chunk and slather it in butter 🙂

  61. Kelly says

I’m very curious about that book! I really like healthy food but sometimes junkfood is just a treat. My favourite junkfood is potato chips with paprika flavour, mayonaise too put on my (healthy) oven roasted potatoes (self made), starbucks ice coffee, baklava (hmmm is that junk food? it isn’t very healthy though), swarch swalder kirsch torte (chocolate cake with cream and cherry’s from germany)…. and I can go on and on… 😉 Thanks Katie for your wonderful blog.. it’s addictive 😀

  62. Stephanie Leming says

I used to love the Entemanns cheese filled coffee cake, so I can’t wait to try this! My favorite junk food is olive gardens black tie mousse cake. That’s my non-vegan occasional indulgence. Perhaps we can develop a somewhat healthy, vegan recipe for that! 😉 Meanwhile, I would love to win this book! Thank you! I visit your blog every day.

  63. Kira says

My favorite junk food is anything that involves chocolate and peanut butter. My absolute favorite are these chocolate peanut butter brownies I make served warm topped with soy ice cream.. So good!

  64. jen lp says

my absolute favorite junk food is your vanilla doughnuts. I make them with different toppings and chips, etc. at least twice a week. it’s a way to have a nice treat but change things up. After that, I love avocado lime cheesecake.

  65. Chelsea Peters says

Wow, Katie. I just followed the link for your post on orthorexia, and practically read my own profile from the past year. Thankfully I’m healthier now (meaning more balanced), but that is exactly what I was hospitalized for. I was dubbed “anorexic”, but I knew that wasn’t a true description for what I was suffering from, since I actually ate a lot of food. It was just mainly very low cal.
I’m a huge fan of your blog, and I try almost everything you post (and I never tell people when it’s “healthy”), but I am so grateful for your acknowledgement of this problem. It’s a cage, really. And so much harder to get out of when the cage can’t be accurately named or described.
Bless your heart, girl. I may just forward this link to my doctor.
p.s. It’s amazing how much more relaxed life is with a little more “juice” on the hips. 🙂

  66. Alina says

My favorite junk food is brownies!!! SUGAR BUTTER FLOUR and CHOCOLATE filled brownies 🙂 hehe that being said I love making your clean versions of this treat. Thanks for this giveaway!

  67. tlt2101 says

Mac and cheese sooo good. I have a massive sweet tooth, so it would have to be candy (any kind) hahaha I’ve had good success with your copycat candy bar recipes so that (and a little willpower helps)!

  68. susie says

hmm…my favorite “junk” food would have to be a warm slice of your deep dish cookie pie with a scoop of so delicious cookies and cream! yummmmm

  69. Mallorie says

I have an awful long list but the top would be…
Papa John’s Pizza, Cake Batter Ice Cream from Coldstone, and Birthday Cake Oreos

  70. Emily says

Before I became vegetarian, then transitioned into veganism.. My favorite junk foods as a kid were skittles, gold fish, and top ramen noodles.
I loovved ramen! Sometimes I would eat those fried noodles raw! I just put them in a bag with the flavor packets and shakes it up! Voila~
And I could go through a bag of goldfish by myself! Me and my brother once cried about a bag!!
As for skittles….. It’s a candy that will forever remain my top choice, even if I can no longer eat them
Course in honor of you!!! I use to eat hot cocoa, eat it. Like out of the packages, dry. As powder!
I’m not proud of it lol xD

  71. Liz says

Ice cream! I have the Vegan Junk Food cookbook and love it – the chicken pot pie recipe is incredible. My kids were totally blown away by how much it tasted just like the evil frozen kind. The other recipes I have tried have all been good, as well 🙂

  72. Hailey says

Thanks for the giveaway Katie! I’m obsessed with So Delicious Almond Milk Frozen dessert in the cookies and cream flavor 🙂 with extra sprinkles!

  73. Marcey says

Too many to list 🙂 But I guess a few top ones would be cheesecake, cinnamon rolls and dark chocolate!

  74. Lynn says

My favorite junk food in the whole world to me is, dark chocolate covered nuts (almonds, peanuts, pecans, walnuts). The dark chocolate is even good for you!! But all in moderation! Yummy!

  75. Amber says

My favorite junk food would have to be Oreos, cinnamon buns, cold stone creamery’s chocolate devotion (this is so good it’s allllll chocolate! Chocolate ice cream, chocolate chips, brownies, hot fudge, SOO GOOD!) and brownies! So bad, but so good!

  76. Ashley says

My favorite junk food treat by far is baskin-robins ice cream cake. That is my only vice and weakness by far. The other is breyer’s reces ice-cream. What can I say, ice cream is good. 🙂
Thanks for the give away chance 🙂

  77. Clara says

I think I would have to say that nachos (or just chips with queso dip!) are my favorite junk food! Would love to have fun with this cookbook – thanks for sharing 🙂

That looks delicious! and my favorite “junk food” cookie dough and your healthy cookie dough dip!

  79. Stephanie Funk says

My favorite junk food is cheddar and sour cream chips. I almost never eat them because I can’t stop! What’s weird is I don’t really enjoy other chips, or chips in general…

  80. Lisa says

Oh, I bet all the coconut oil in this makes it just take fantastic! My favorite “junk food” is probably hmm…chocolate chip banana bread

  81. Ayesha A. says

Apple dumplings made with Crescent Roll Dough and Mountain Dew! Not the healthiest thing there is, but insanely awesome! =)

That recipe looks delicious! I think my favorite junk food would have to be cinnamon rolls…doesn’t get much better than that!

I’ll even take a pie thrown in my eye… I LOVE PIE

  85. Sonia Schlotzer says

yummo!!!!! One of my favorites is strawberry crumble scone (yes a crumble and scone combination took me years but amazing – all the ingredients you and your bloggers would approve 🙂 ) with a melted peanut butter and chocolate sauce!!!

  86. Brandie says

Oh… that cake looks SO good. Unfortunately, fat, sugar and calories ARE an issue for me (right now), so I probably won’t make it, cause, between me and my 4 year old son… I’d probably end up eating the majority of it by myself!

My favorite “junk food(s)” are chocolate chip cookies, and almond and sea salt dark chocolate bars. Oh yum. Yum yum yum. 🙂

  87. Wendi says

Thanks for your blog. I’m really enjoying it and your great ideas and recipies. My favorite foods . . .so many . . .but I love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Nutella, and warm gooey chocolate chip cookies or brownies! Yum!!!

  88. Bianca-Vegan Crunk says

Exclude me from the giveaway because I already have this book (reviewed it too!). But I just wanted to say that I love seeing your thoughts on the 80/20 rule on your blog. I think people need to be reminded sometimes to not be so uptight about eating perfectly all the time. But you know I’m a relentless defender of “junk food” (which, when it’s vegan, isn’t really all that junky anyway).

  89. Robin in AZ says

My favorite junk food is homemade cookies- preferably something involving chocolate and some kind of nuts!

  90. Kristen says

I think my favorite junk food is a grilled pb, banana and fakin bacon sandwich. I haven’t had one in such a long time! I do love cookie dough minus the chocolate chips too.

  91. mandy says

junk (aka comfort) food for me is always custard. In our house we have a version my kids call “yum yum custard” . I sub out half the milk with coconut cream and add chai syrup concentrate, it makes it decadent if not the healthiest dessert.

  92. antoinette says

my favorite junk food is raw cookie dough (vegan of course!) I’m not a fan of baked cookies unless they are right out of the oven but I can eat my weight in cookie dough!

  93. Ekko says

Katie, Ever since your blog I don’t crave any real/fake junk food. I do LOVE your No-Bake Mocha Chocolate Chip Cookies and must stop myself from eating them all in one sitting, but I suppose that doesn’t count as junk food. This desert looks pretty darn tasty too and might become my new favorite junk food 😀

  94. Anna @ Your Healthy Place says

This sounds delicious; I’m a huge fan of coffee cakes and crumb cakes. It’s great for a treat but I would love to try your coconut breakfast cake as well some time!

I would say my fave junk food is anything sweet, but in particular chewy choc chip cookies. I can pass up cupcakes or anything but never cookies!

  95. Gaby says

I not a vegan but I looovveee your recipes Katie! My favourite junk food is fried chicken if we’re talking savoury, i actually think its the batter that does it for me and not the chicken 😛 also brownies when it comes to sweet junk food :L

  96. HealthFoodJunky says

    Great post! 🙂

Gosh, my favorite junk food. . .it’s hard because I just love healthy treats! I guess it’s a toss up between: onion rings, mozzarella sticks, Reese’s Pieces, and cinnamon rolls. 😀

  97. Cassie says

I would say my favorite vegan junk foods are buffalo fried tofu (eating right now!!), rice chips, chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting, and a big fudgey brownie. This cake looks like it could join the list!

  98. Emily says

Mac and Cheese is probably my favorite junk food… although the vegan version that I make has a sweet potato or squash and nutritional yeast among other healthy ingredients so I guess I can eat as much of it as I want;) I just really crave carbs when I’m craving something “bad”. I love love love vegan breakfast breads as well.

Katie, a question about your recipe: this recipe looks awesome. I would love to try, but I am soy intolerant, so cannot have Tofutti. Is there a substitute that I could use in this recipe and other recipes that call for Tofutti spreads?

  99. shelley says

Hands down my favorite junk food is pizza. I’m still searching for a great vegan pizza recipe and beginning to think it just doesn’t exist.

  100. Tabbycat says

Katie…I discovered your blog yesterday, looking for good treat ideas for my sister to take to her gluten-and-dairy-free friend’s house. She and I had a little dance around the room when we found your recipes – they’re so amazing, and mostly devoid of sugar as well! Particularly, I’m a big fan of your peanut butter fudge and pb cookie dough cookies. I will definitely be coming back! In terms of my favourite ‘junk’ food, I’d say it would probably be calamari rings and chips. I haven’t found anything yet that can trounce the perfect deep-fried, chewy texture of calamari, matched with crispy, salty chips for a real lunch or dinner. The best calamari I’ve ever had so far would probably have been in Margaret River Town Centre (about 3 hrs south of Perth) where they sell the most delicious calamari in proper fish-and-chip parcels for $9.90!

  101. mary says

my favorite junk food is scarfing walnuts (or roasted cashews, or both!) plus chocolate chips by the handful without making them into any kind of recipe at all!

  102. Sarah says

I’ve always LOVED fondue, peanut butter cups, and gummy bears! I haven’t had fondue since going vegan though 🙁

  103. Jessica says

I love all your recipes! and this looks fantastic!
My favorite junk food is definitely deep fried plantains. Soooo good.

  104. Vegyogini says

Thanks for the giveaway, Katie! My favorite junk food is probably vegan ice cream. I don’t eat it often, but I do love it!

  105. Brooke Cole says

My favorite junk foods are pizza and chocolate chip cookies. I’m actually making your pizookie tonight!

  106. Erica says

Chocolate-covered coffee beans are my favorite junk food! Perfect for cramming for final exams (or staying up late drooling at your blog!)

  107. Alex says

My favourite junk foods are cookies of all shapes and sizes and flavours! Oreos especially, both homemade and store bought 😀 and all CCK cookies

  108. Anonymous says

The better question is what junk food don’t I like? That would be salty chips and fast food (Except the desserts. The desserts are boss.
Well, except for Frosties… I can’t yet figure out if they’re drinks or ice cream.)

  109. Andrea says

Mmmm. This might have to be breakfast tomorrow! I’m like you–I try to eat healthy as much as I can, but I don’t mind eating junk food. Life is too short to not indulge every once in awhile. 🙂
As for my favorite junk food, it’s a tough call. I guess I tend to prefer fresh cookies (chocolate chip is my favorite–can’t go wrong with a classic!), but I also enjoy a good milkshake when it’s warmer out. And around the holidays–pie. Any kind of pie! Except meringue. Chocolate chip cookies will always be my absolute favorite, though!

  110. Tabitha Covey says

I love love love your blog! I’m gluten free and Ive tried a few of your recipes and WOW! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your goodness with us! My favorite junk foods are Luna and Larry’s coconut bliss ice cream, gluten free vegan pizza, and your healthy butterfinger recipe…I swear! Around Halloween, I made like 5 batches and….well….I shared a few…..Oh my goodness…no, you’re goodness! Yum!

  111. Sunnie says

My favorite junk food is PIZZA CRUST! I don’t like pizza much (I make mine with vegan cheese, but even when I ate regular cheese, pizza was never my thing), but I ALWAYS am willing to *ahem* take care of my brother and sister’s unwanted crusts.

Other unhealthy favorites include chocolate chip cookies . . . and SoDelicious ice cream. 🙂

  112. ariana says

my favorite junk food is peanut butter cookies! I cannot get enough of em! especially still in the dough form…

  113. Sara @ fitcupcaker says

These look awesome. I love coconut, and I checked out your coconut breakfast too. I need to get some other sugar alternatives, all i have right now is stevia.

  114. Amy J says

Hmmm…tough to pick just one… I really LOVE cheese cake of all different flavors. I also enjoy melting a small small bowl of chocolate chips, then stirring in a spoonful of natural chunky peanut butter. And lastly, potato chips…with dip 🙂 I eat mostly fruits/veggies, grains and yogurt, so it’s great to have a junky treat every so often!

  115. Simona says

Since I’m from Bulgaria I’m all about the bulgarian Banitza !! I love it. Here’s a little info if you want to know what Banitza is; a traditional Bulgarian food prepared by layering a mixture of whisked eggs and pieces of cheese between filo pastry and then baking it in an oven.

  116. Gundega says

Thank you, dear Katie, for the wonderful recipes! I’m trying out as many as I can! You are my healthy dessert inspiration fairy!

I have many favorite junk foods, but I try to eat healthier these days. My favorite junk food: chewy pizza, linguini with Alfredo sauce, also yummy brownies, chocolate, ice-cream, frozen custard with brownie pieces, soft freshly baked cookies!!!

  117. Carol says

My favorite “junk” food is chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Just can’t get enough of chocolate (just like Katie).

  118. emily jo says

anything sweet bread! chocolate… choc with pb! cookies! omg i probably have world’s worst sweet tooth ever. i could eat anything junk!

  119. Erica says

Great post, I work with ED patients for my full-time job, so I know all about orthorexia. This recipe looks fantastic by the way. Totally a keeper! 🙂

  120. Katrina says

My favourite junk food would be corn chips and guacamole, sweet potato fries, black licorice & dark chocolate. I can’t be trusted when any of that is near me.

  121. sandra says

I will have to reluctantly admit i love peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. That book looks like it offers great recipes for party treats, thanks for providing a chance to win!

  122. Molly says

Hmm…that’s a tough question! Maybe ice-cream. Or french fries…french fries with ice cream as dipping sauce!

  123. Bek @ Crave says

MY fave junk food would be ice-cream or chocolate- although I haven’t had the former in forever!

This looks tasty as, and I’m very pleased that you wrote about this- because you have a huge influence on young women and many who could easily use your site with their disordered eating.

    Thank you for writing this!

The cake looks good but lots of ingredients! my goodness.

  124. Stefanie says

I absolutely love your site 🙂

My favorite junk foods are ice cream, peanut butter cups and kettle corn!

  125. Lisa B says

I think my favourite junk food is anything sweet!! I love cake so pretty much any kind will do. I to try to eat healthy on a daily basis so when I eat the sweet I don’t feel guilty and no one every should!!

  126. Anita says

great post – would love to add this to my collection of cookbooks – favourite junk food, vaniila frozen yogurt 🙂

  127. Ruth Deaton says

Hey! Since I’m at college I am 100% surrounded by “junk food” and well, food in general. So it has been a challenge to stay somewhat healthy but thanks to the local stores and local Farmer’s Market it has been easier than I first thought! My favorite junk food is a sundae with excessive amounts of hot chocolate sauce and whipped cream! 🙂 Or if just chips and salsa (or spinach dip if it’s available!)

I can’t wait for more recipes to try. I’ve been able to try the milkshakes here in my dorm room and I’m planning on trying the Raw Cookie Dough Milkshake but I’ll have to do it with normal cookies. It’ll still be delicious!!

    Thanks!

  128. Karen says

    Lets see….

cheesy ANYTHING, crunchy, crackery ANYTHING, crunchy, nutty ANYTHING, dark chocolate ANYTHING, peanut butter ANYTHING, caramel ANYTHING, buttery, cake batter-like ANYTHING, coconut ANYTHING, crackers, cake, pie and cookies. Vegan tacos with FRIED TACO SHELLS.

There’s an old song called “Junk-Food Junkie” that you are wayyyy too young to have heard. Used to be played on the Dr. Demento Radio Show:

    http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=ZLiVeRJTtqo&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZLiVeRJTtqo

  129. CC says

My favorite junk food is UTZ Crab potato chips. They are full of salt & other terrible ingredients but I sure miss them…a little.

  130. Cathy says

My favorite junk food is anything with chocolate. In a pinch- mixing chocolate chips with nut butter. Yum!

  131. Brittany says

Chocolate! (but really that can be healthy so it dosent quite count) It’s a shameful thing but I love Mac and Cheese. Here in Canada we have a store named The Real Canadian Super Store and their generic brand of white cheddar mac and cheese is my favorite junk food.

  132. Maggie says

I love fresh out of the oven dessert – anything… cookies, brownies, pie – I don’t discriminate! YUM.

  133. Jacque Foster says

My favorite junk food, by far, is any type of cookies (particularly chocolate chip with toffee) dipped into hot tea. I realize hot tea is not junk food but it IS a vehicle for the cookies dipped in tea. Pretty much any type of ice cream, too…especially kinds with cookies in them! Ben & Jerry’s once had a cinnamon ice cream with cookie dough in it. They discontinued it. It was devastating.

  134. Shannon says

Favorite junk food? Anything maple-y, cinnamon-y, or ginger-y.

PS- I took your Sex in a Pan idea and sort of ran away with it! I did the graham crust, then th middle layer was actually your Ultimate Chocolate Fudge Pie filling, and then the top later was tofu, the cream from the top of a can of lite coconut milk, Tahitian vanilla, confectioners’ sugar, and a splash of clear chocolate liqueur. Then some dark chocolate shavings on top. Thanks for the inspiration….I felt so 1990! (That’s about the year that Sex in a Pan was the ubiquitous dessert at potlucks in my hometown!)

  135. Jaclyn says

It has a light fluffy base, with a cold, creamy and rich topping with a hint of coffee and chocolate. Once it enters the mouth, it has an explosion of flavours and textures that totally satisfy… The classic tiramisu… Mmmmmmmm…..
Totally love that… with a hot cup of mocha… 🙂

  136. Laura Miller says

Ooh, I’m a junk-food-aholic. I definitely love Mac and cheese, but my personal favorite is fudge. I loooooooove fudge. A lot. Oh, and chocolate/peanut butter. So yes, chocolate peanut butter fudge gets devoured very quickly if in my presence.

  137. DeeDee says

How did you know I have been pondering coffee cake for the past couple of weeks? I am looking forward to trying this…and then maybe with a poppy seed filling because I have also been craving something like the poppy seed cake (mohn kuchen) my grandmother used to make… 🙂 Thank you!!!!

  138. laura says

My all time favorite junk food is a swiss roll wrapped in dark chocolate. However, my favorite salty food that I NEVER keep in the house because I have ZERO self control…potato chips!

    Thanks!

  139. Amy says

Hmmm, I’d have to say my favourite junk food is my mom’s double chocolate fudgy brownies 😀 :D. And I totally agree with you on the 80/20 rule, I think its good for you to indulge every now and then (good for your mental health anyways lol) if you are always trying super hard to eat perfectly 100% of the time, you’ll always be disappointing yourself. Not fun at all. Thanks for this recipe!

P.S. I’ve never been a big fan of mac and cheese, mainly because of the cheese, its too salty for me, I almost always cut the salt in recipes in half and its perfect for my taste buds 🙂

  140. Chris Harr says

My favorite junkfood is Alfredo Sause. It doesn’t matter what it is on, pasta, seafood, brocolli, I just luv the stuff. Of course, it has to be the single worse “bad-for-you” food item on the planet. And I’m sure I can hear my arteries clogging up with every bite . . . but it is soooo worth it to splurge about once a month! I was so happy to see a few new low-fat, low-calorie versions on the shelf, my last trip to the super market. Now I can splurge with a little less guilt! Amen!

  141. Douglas Lloyd says

ICE CREAM!!! of course. For a healthy snack of junk foodish feel, I like the coconut crack:) I think you posted that a few days ago. thanks for the giveway!

  142. Lorena says

My favorite junkfood would have to be pumpkin or coconut anything. (mounds, pie, luna bars, macaroons etc) Either or-they are my favorite!

  143. adrian says

My favorite junk foods would be pizza! Amy’s or kashi brand-otherwise homemade. Or coconut/maple/white chocolate anything. 🙂

  144. Heather says

Hmm, my favorite junk food? Only one? I would have to say it is just a classic chocolate cake- a very moist one called “Crazy Cake” (I think the recipe just came from the cocoa powder container, but my mom’s made it for years and it is one of those never-fail types so I learned how to make it young.). I could eat it (I actually prefer it) without any frosting at all. Mmmmm. Unfortunately, the recipe contains egg. I haven’t yet tried it with Ener-G, because I’ve also gone Gluten-free and I am skeptical I could change both the egg/flour component and still get the same result. I do LOVE your cauliflower cake; it has a different texture than the one I grew up with, but I have got to say, it is amazing. I hate cauliflower. In all forms. Except in chocolate cake apparently lol! I would love to win a cookbook so I could make treats for my family so my son with allergies has a variety of alternatives to the treats his siblings eat.

  145. Kacey says

I eat way too much vegan ice cream, but really any vegan dessert item is my downfall. If we’re talking pre-packaged junk food though, I’d totally say those smucker’s uncrustable pb&js. The vending machine in my dorm sells them, and they’re definitely my late night guilty pleasure. For some reason I love them frozen.

  146. amanda says

These look great I love so many of your recipes and have gotten a lot of friends hooked on your blog. I don’t really discriminate when it come to junk food, but if I had to pick something I would say gummy bears, or swiss cake rolls, or any kind of cake, maybe ice cream topped with all of the above 😉

  147. Junyi says

This looks amazing! My favorite junk food has to be ice cream, either chocolate chip cookie dough of just plain vanilla.

  148. Kathryn says

I love any homemade desserts. It just doesn’t taste right from a box. I love creamy desserts like cheesecake, peanutbutter pie, cream puffs…. excuse me, I need to go make something right now!

  149. Deb says

Definitely have to agree with you on cinnamon rolls, major yum. Oh! and french fries! Sweet potato or regular please! Umma does wine count? 😉

  150. Hannah @ Tales From The Last Frontier says

I loooove cheesecake!! I have to say my favorite junk food though is anything involving chocolate, which is something of a problem ha ha. Love the recipe and thanks for the giveaway 🙂

  151. Doroteia says

My favorite junk foods include ice cream, heavy chocolate cake ( the really sweet and deep chocolate ones) and this dessert thing I had on vacation last year (pastry sheets with a walnut pumpkin filling, baked in sugar syrup- I think it was called : tikvenik) BUT my all time favorite junk food is ice cream 😀 When I was little, I ate several servings of ice cream fo breakfast every day in the hot sumer months!

  152. Kristy Kat Creamer says

I miss doughnuts. That and brownies were always my favorite go to junk food. Thanks for the great giveaway and thanks for the help you give us all! We can still eat some junk, but put less in the trunk 😉

  153. Sue says

My very favorite junk food is Lay’s Cheddar and Sour cream potato chips. Love those things! I hardly ever eat them, but they are definitely an occasional indulgence that I just love!

  154. Mary says

I’m embarrassed to say that I can’t pick just one junk food. Chips, ice cream, and ANYTHING chocolate are definitely at the top of my junk food list.

  155. Melanie Foster says

This looks so good. One of my junky faves is rich coffee cake or crumb topped muffins. By the way, when is your cookbook going to be ready? I follow you on pinterest and am very excited about the cookbook!

  156. celeste says

    Hi katie,

What did you do before this became your full time job? Did you study food or go to uni? I’m thinking of doing a career change into food but am not sure how to go about it, or test it out. How do you earn an income from a blog? Sorry, so many questions, I’m just ultra curious and really inspired by your blog, I love how you make food exciting by using ingredients that no one would ever guess.

    Thank you Katie,

  157. Nicole says

My favorite junk food is french fries! Yikes. It’s just so bad for you, but so good. I’d love a copy of a Vegan cookbook so that I could learn more recipes instead of making the same things over and over!

  158. Leah Marie says

Anything that combines chocolate and a nut butter… I’m pretty sure that would qualify as my favorite junk food. But also? I can eat copious amounts of chipped beef (meat, I know. sorry.) gravy and rice in one sitting.

  159. Jaime says

Mmm my favorite junk food is either Girl Scout Thin Mints or vanilla ice cream with melted peanut butter and sprinkles on it.

  160. Kellye Bojorquez says

I love pretty much anything having to do with chocolate, and French Fries! I think chocolate frosting is pretty much my downfall– that’s one of the reasons the name of your blog appealed to me so much when I saw it the first time! Thanks for your wonderful recipes, Katie. You’re an inspiration!

  161. Ali says

Hmmm, my favorite “junk food” would be rice crispy treats made with peanut butter and melted dark chocolate on the top.

  162. Esther says

My favorite is “dirt” cake – layers of crushed oreos (or Newman O’s!) and a pudding-whipped cream mix. So ridiculously decadent. Bonus points if it’s served in a flower pot with plastic flowers in the middle.

  163. Jamie says

Pizza is my weakness. Mac & Cheese would be #2, but overall? I crave pizza daily even when I’m not hungry. Luckily, pizza can sometimes be covered with enough veggies whre I don’t feel *quite* that bad. But still… 24/7. I want.

  164. Martha says

I like the 80/20 plan. My favorite “junk” food is home made blueberry muffins with streusel topping! Thank’s for the give-away!

  165. Christina says

Peanut butter!!!! Or anything chocolate….or the two together…especially peanut butter and Oreos!!! Yummy!

  166. Rosemary says

I just made the coffee cake I can’t wait for it to get out of the oven! My favorite junk food is definitely white chocolate 🙂

  167. Bethany says

Hi. My favorite junk foods are chocolate chip cookies, brownies, pop tarts (btw i love your healthy pop tart recipe), peanut butter and ice cream (in a perfect world ice cream would have the same nutritional facts as water) Lol.

  168. Stephanie says

I’m a carby person…My favorite junk foods are cinnamon rolls and/or bagels but cookies are pretty hard to resist too!

  169. Gina Berninger says

Thank you for doing the cookbook review. You listed a handful of my favorites and I hope the cheesecake is as tasty as the original.

  170. Jan Johnson says

I love White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter from Peanut Butter & Co.! I eat it by the spoonful and then the second and third spoonful! And of course mac and cheese and chicken and dumplings – yum!

  171. Suniti says

The coffee cake is so tempting… if it comes to junk food its always french fries, ice creams and more and more chocolates 🙂

  172. Tara says

Whether I’m craving savory or sweet, my guilty pleasures are my grandma’s mac and cheese and peanut butter cup ice cream. yum!

  173. Sarah says

My favorite junk food includes Bulls Eyes, Dots, and nonpareils. I have a sweet tooth! I really appreciate your recipes because I can make something healthy and sweet. 🙂

  174. Victoria says

This looks delicious!! My favorite junk food as a kid was probably Andes mint chocolates. Absolutely still love the mint and chocolate combination.

  175. Trudie says

This looks delish! I’d love to win the cookbook with all the other recipes too. My fave junk food is anything chocolate!

  176. Jessie says

Katie, I just want to thank you so much for addressing eating disorders and orthorexia in particular. There are far too many “healthy” food bloggers out there who make it seem like we need to eat a picture perfect diet to be healthy. I admire you so much! Thanks for being awesome! Oh, and the coffee cake looks scrumptious! 🙂

  177. India says

    My favourite savoury ‘junk food’-
    Sweet potato fries
cheese crust stuffed thin base pizza
    garlic bread
    cheese dippers
    butter pies
    sushi 🙂

    my favourite sweet ‘junk food’
    Cinnamon rolls! from rollers
    skinny blueberry muffins from starbucks
    ice cream milkshakes
oreo and cream hagendaz ice cream
    and hot cookie dough <3

  178. Lisa @bitesforbabies says

Well said, I completely agree! I find that I’m healthier and more fit now than I’ve ever been, yet I’m not counting calories or fat! I think the key is moderation, portion control, and making healthy substitutes whenever possible. I really hope to instill these healthy eating habits in my children as well. I’ve started my son early (my daughter’s only 3 months)-he has no clue he’s not eating refined sugar, fruit juices, or that his food is “laced” with healthy ingredients like chia/flax seed, tofu, etc!

  179. Lisa says

Katie – there is a confusing error in your recipe. You list three different flour choices, all in cups and weights… but 1 cup of whole wheat flour, for example, doesn’t weigh the same as all-purpose flour. Please advise the correct measurements of all three based on when you tested each flour to make it clearer for us!

    Thanks!

  180. Sarah says

    My favorite junk food is either Garrot’s popcorn in Chicago or dark chocolate covered salted caramels. =}

  181. Rana says

My favourite junk food is anything baked! I have a real weakness for baked goods. I can eat one chip and leave the bag, I don’t drink carbonated beverages, I don’t like stright-up candy, but oh my goodness, show me a cupcake and I want six! I’m loving healthier baked goods as I can chalk them up to having some nutrients. I would really appreciate and USE this cookbook.

  182. Jeanine (The Blue Sash) says

Favorite junk food would have to be those giant vegan oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies from Whole Foods. They always seem to call out to me from their basket atop the cupcake display case.

  183. Vicki E says

Lay’s Classic Potato Chips, I could eat a whole bag (the BIG one) all by myself if no one was watching. I adore those crispy, salty, thin, crunchy potato chips! Now I’m craving some, DRATS! I never have them around. (see above comment 😉
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  184. Rachel S says

My favorite junk food of all time is chocolate pudding with chocolate chips in it!! Basically anything with chocolate, but this combo is undeniably delishhhhhhh!!! Now I want it, and I ate my last pudding cup yesterday! 🙁

  185. Jessica says

“Healthy” food is all about the root of the word, “heal.” If the food you eat allows your body to heal at the end of the day, it’s healthy.
Besides that little side note, my favorite junk food is probably doughnuts – the real fried ones!

  186. Geoff Drucker says

White Cheddar Popcorn is my addiction!
I’ve been making your desserts regularly for the past few months and I must say I have enjoyed them all!
Keep ’em coming, Katie, you’re my new bff 😉

  187. Hila says

I agree that we shouldn’t stress and eat healthy as much as we can! My favorite junk food is french fries.

  188. Genki Kitty says

That coconut breakfast cake looks so amazing! I have tried something out like this before but it didn’t really work out. I’m going to try this one, thanks. My favorite junk food is a drink – that counts right? ^_^ I love vegan hot cocoa mixed with coffee…. So not good for the body but love it! (I won’t tell you how I put it with a vegan oatmeal flour chocolate chip cookie too.)

  189. Laura says

Without a doubt, Reese peanut butter cups blizzard from DQ. It’s GF, and I load up on lactate pills before consuming. But now that i’ve learned how to make ice cream using frozen bananas, I usually make my own version at home with good dark chocolate and organic natural peanut butter, hits the spot!

  190. Janet says

I really appreciate this blog about eating healthy. I have watched what I eat for several years, and feel like I eat healthy. I have recently felt some pressure that I have to only eat raw foods or “clean” foods. I feel like you gave me permission to not worry so much about what I eat. Thanks

  191. Joan says

My favorite junk food? Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Squares, Lucky Charms, and pig-shaped Mexican ginger pastries 🙂 The last two with almond milk, of course!

  192. Cake Blindness says

I think my favorite junk food falls more into the comfort foods category. Mashed potatoes, risotto, pasta, etc. Starchy, creamy foods that warm me up on the inside. I have to dance extra hard at Zumba when I’ve been eating those kinds of things.

  193. Amanda Danielson says

I love chocolate of any kind. Cake, ice cream, cookies… If it is chocolate, I’d probably eat it. It is a weakness.

  194. kl says

definitely chocolate, i only wish it were more difficult to come by so i could avoid temptation.. and if you’re ever in the neighbourhood katie, check out the “burger fuel” chain in New Zealand. there are vegan/vegetarian/gluten free burgers, and vegan soy shakes of all flavours that are RIDICULOUSLY creamy!

  195. nicki says

I love anything caramel, so without a doubt caramel apples are my favorites, The apples makes me feel not guilty, since its somewhat healthy, lol!

Yummm this looks so good! Ill make this the next time I’m having people in, otherwise I’d probably eat the whole thing… My favourite junk food is those crispy mini rice cakes, in the sweet chilli flavour… so tasty! I know its not really junk food, but where I am losing weight I like to think is so I feel like I’m being a little bad… your coconut cookie dough oatmeal is to die for, I love it so much!

Any sort of cheesecake if I’m at home. Twizzlers, Smarties or Starburst if I’m at work and just hoarding something in my pocket!

I was so excited to try this recipe, but I thought it came out way too salty 🙁 It was also my first time trying vegan cream cheese and thought it tasted too much like tofu (I guess I should have expected that from Tofutti brand). But the salt definitely drowned out the tofu flavor … it was way too much.

Do you use a vita mix with your recipes? I am looking into getting one but want to make sure that I can do your recipes with no trouble.

I just made this. Seriously the best coffee cake I’ve made. So good. I used coconut not veg oil and I didn’t have enough cream cheese, probably only about 4 oz but actually it was enough, for us anyway. My kids don’t love cream cheese. Excellent. Will make again!

Wow .. This looks so good.
But I don’t have everything I need in the pantry. yet..
Time to go shopping. Or maybe I will just use bream cheese.
Love your recipes, and the ones you feature from other healthy places.

Made the cream cheese filled coffee cake for Thanksgiving because I wasn’t in the mood for pie and it was so good, I’m going to make it for my vegan group and also take it to work at Christmastime.

I made this twice and will make it a third time for my vegetarian group this week. The people at my work called it Tiramisu because they thought it was so fancy! They loved the fresh lemon zest in the Tofutti cream cheese. It’s a fantastic recipe!

These turned out delicious! I use a different cream cheese filling to cut out the preservatives in the store bought cream cheese but it turned out just as great as I imagined! I’ve been hearing that sugar intake should be cut down, but with a dessert blog its hard to have less that 2 teaspoons a day! Excluding fruits of course, how do you manage your sugar intake its very hard to control for me.

I made this for a Christmas season brunch. I am a fairly experienced baker and double checked all ingredient amounts. I found this heavy and very oily. I threw it out. I was surprised as I have had good luck with other CCK recipes.

I haven’t tried this one, but it’s actually not Katie’s recipe! It’s from the cookbook she reviewed. Sorry it didn’t turn out well for you 🙁
