You’re going to think I’m crazy…
That’s okay.
My grandma always said, “If they’re laughing at you, at least you got someone to laugh.”
I like making people laugh. So please laugh all you want at my crazy idea for Frappuccino Oatmeal… But give this recipe a chance and I bet you will be astonished at how delicious it is!
When Starbucks starts selling it in 5 years, maybe then you won’t think I’m so crazy. 😉
Frappuccino Oatmeal
(can be gluten-free!)
Recipe from here: CCK Oatmeal Recipes
- 1 serving rolled oats (See nutrition link below, for all substitution notes)
- 1/2 cup milk of choice
- 1 cup water or more milk of choice
- 1/4 tsp salt (important to add before cooking)
- 1 tsp instant coffee granules (I use Mt. Hagen decaf.)
- sweetener of choice
Microwave option: Combine first four ingredients in a large pyrex measuring cup, and microwave 4 minutes (watching during the last minute to make sure it doesn’t spill over). Leave in the closed microwave 5 extra minutes, then transfer—uncovered—to the refrigerator to sit overnight and absorb the liquid. The next day, add the coffee, a tiny pinch more salt, and sweetener. Stir, and reheat if desired. (I actually like eating this cold!)
Stovetop option: Combine all ingredients (Cut the water back to 1/2 cup if you’re not planning to let it sit overnight). Cook, stirring occasionally, until oats are soft and fluffy (or until they’re still a little liquidy if you want to let it sit uncovered overnight in the fridge). If desired, chill in the fridge. Otherwise, serve and enjoy.
Topped with my favorite melted Homemade Chocolate.
Question of the Day:
Do you care about what other people think of you?
I used to. A lot. When I was in fourth grade, I completely gave up playing with Barbies just because some girls told me it was babyish. (I bet they secretly still played with Barbies, too!) In middle school, my friends and I practically lived in the bathroom, always checking the mirror to apply extra makeup and make sure our hair was perfect. (Rolls eyes at younger self.)
Thankfully I grew out of my awkward middle-school phase and gradually began doing my own thing and caring less and less what others thought about it. If people think I’m odd, that’s perfectly fine. Being normal is so boring! 🙂
Yum, so trying this for tomorrow’s breakfast!
I definitely want to make this for breakfast one day! This would be good with a little of bit of cocoa powder, too.
I actually really like coffee oatmeal! I put Tim Horton’s instant French vanilla coffee in my oatmeal on occasion. Really good! So you are not crazy at all in my opinion. 😉
I’ve heard of coffee oatmeal before and I’ve always wanted to try it, I just never have! This sounds delicious!
Hey Katie!
Thanks for the post! One question: how do you make your oatmeal “sticky”? Mine usually just ends up watery and not so good. Any secrets you can share?
If you’re doing it on the stovetop, try cooking it with a bit less water! You’ll need to watch it because it cooks pretty quick… Use maybe, say, 1/2 cup of water for 1/3 a cup of oats. Then if some of the oats are still not cooked, add a bit more water… but just a bit, you don’t want them to be sitting there all watery if you’re eating them immediatly. You’ll find a proportion of oats/water you like after some experimentation.
Thank you, Caroline! I’ll give it a go.
Thanks, Caroline! I just edited my post with your suggestion.
Stephanie: also, if there’s extra water left you can put it UNcovered in the fridge overnight. The next day, much (if not all) of the extra water will have been absorbed, leaving the oats perfect and fluffy.
Thanks so much, Katie!
Haha I don’t think you’re crazy at all! Now when you post a recipe for oatmeal with, say, cucumbers and chocolate, then I’ll start giving the side eye 😉
Just today I made a lemon pie with cauliflower. Is that weird enough? 😉
Not sure if you remember the blogger Heather Eats Almond Butter, but she used to put beets, cauliflower, and even spinach in her oatmeal!
this looks so good!! I love all of your recipes… I would LOVE it if you made a healthy carrot cake/cupcake recipe! (the macadamia nut + chocolate chip cookies were a hit!)
I have this one: https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2012/04/03/five-minute-carrot-cake-for-one/
I’m also working on an actual big cake, maybe for the cookbook.
I used to put cocoa, coffee and cayenne pepper into my oats. mexican chocolate oats!
I have tried this for this morning and LOVED it! Made my day right from the start :). So nice! And because it is very hot where I live I ate them cold. Thank you Katie!!
I ate mine cold too. It was like an iced coffee in a bowl. Sounds weird, but it was delicious! I didn’t want breakfast to end :).
Most people think I’m crazy. It’s not even interesting anymore so I just don’t care.
I’ve been putting instant coffee (mainly decaf but who cares….) in my breakfast concoctions for the last 10 years and people always look at it like it is poisonous. To me the smell is simply irresistible. My favorite one is a mix of plain yogurt, mashed banana, cocoa cookies, coffee, cocoa powder, peanut butter and some other (not so) secret ingredients and I never get tired of it. If people don’t like it, there will just be more for me.
I can’t believe I have never thought to do this- given how much I love both coffee and oatmeal! Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that just seem the most brilliant! I have to have some kind of fruit in my oatmeal though (usually banana). I wonder if that would make the flavor taste “off.”
I’d like to say that I’m way too old to care what others think about me, but there’s an insecure part of me that always will. But- for the most part, I do what makes ME happy, without being “selfish” about it. I do want others to be happy as well. 🙂
I am a serious oatmeal and coffee addict so I don’t know why I’ve never thought to combine the two together. But last night when I was searching for an idea for a dinner and saw your recipe, I immediately knew I had to try it! I have another bowl cooking right now for breakfast so obviously the results were pretty good. 🙂 Thanks for the idea, Katie!
Yum! This was my breakfast today. I made it with almond milk and mixed chopped almonds in and it was delish!
Your not crazy, your a genius!! I love it!!
Katie, I just had this for breakfast. It was incredible! I must agree with the person above me. You are a chocolate-covered genius, and I am so thankful I found your website. What would my tummy do without it? 😉
Made this today using 1T chia seeds instead of letting it sit overnight, added 1T choc chips and some stevia. Delicious!
yum that looks good! I was going to suggest that a mocha frappuccino oatmeal would be even better, but as I read further it turned out you already had that idea. Silly me, thinking you would forget the chocolate 😉
Did you already do the Vita-Mix giveaway? The post didn’t say on which day you would do the drawing.
She’s going to announce the winner in a future post… The company wanted the contest open for a few weeks, so it’s not over yet! 🙂
This sounds absolutely delicious! If everything could be coffee flavored, I’d be on cloud 9. Definitely going to try it!
Thank you for another great one!
You could make it cappuccino-like by adding french vanilla into it as well… Hmm… the possibilities. Some hazlenuts, or some irish cream… (although that wouldn’t exactly be vegan).
No laughing at you…what a great spin!! 🙂
This looks awesome! I’m not a coffee drinker but I love coffee-chocolate flavored desserts; it’s a great combination (obviously I am planning on adding chocolate when making this)
I played with Barbies and American Girl dolls into Junior High, but only with my little sister. Now that I’m in my mid twenties, I’m proud of my quirky choices and I am not apologetic about my values. But I think we all still feel insecure at times!
This is what ive been looking for lately.
except it needs some cream on top.
awesome!
I love your blog!……So I nominated you for a Food Stories Award!
http://foodstoriesblog.com/food-stories-award/
Someone who gets me!! 😀
I use frozen spinach as a base for desserts! Is that crazy? ;D I think you understand me, right Katie??
YUM! I don’t think you’re crazy at all. It sound delicious to me! 🙂
Looks good!!!!- as far as your question regarding caring about what people think– this is my favorite answer
“When you are truly comfortable in your own skin, not everyone will like you; but you won’t care about it one bit!”
Such a great idea. All I can think is “why did I not come up with this!” All are my favorite things. Great Recipe!
That sounds really good 🙂 I sometimes care what people think, but it depends on what it is.
Thanks for the recipe, Katie! When I make overnight oats, I usually include a bit of leftover coffee from my thermos in addition to fresh almond milk. I like to think of them as “caffeinated overnight oats.” 🙂
Icare what SOME people think of me(My spouse, my kids, close friends). As I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten better at recognizing when its important to care or not care what someone thinks of me. It’s all about balance. Sometimes it’s good to put others first, and then again sometimes its a MUST that you come first and what others think is secondary.
Loving the idea! I will try it soon, but now it is too hot and humid outside for oatmeal I think.
Maybe you have somse smoothie or popsicle recipes coming up? I hope so 🙂
I’m making the frappucino pops tonight!
I’ve been on a NO cook oatmeal kick lately. (maybe b/c it’s been hot out). do you think, maybe, this would work as a no cook version?? I don’t know much about instant coffee…does it need HOT water? I have my oatmeal already in the ‘fridge for the rest of this week…maybe i’ll just be brave and try this Sunday night for Monday’s breakfast. What’s the worst that can happen…right???
I think if you dissolved the instant coffee, salt & sweetener in water before adding it to the oatmeal it would work as a no cook version! Instant coffee dissolves pretty quick even in lukewarm water. Hope that helps!
Oh goodness you’re definitely not crazy. What I do all the time is mix 1 cup water, 1/3 cup quick cooking oats, 1/2 banana, 1/2 packet of starbucks instant coffee and microwave that for 4 mins, then let it cool for 1-2 mins then add 2 tbsp almond butter, a drizzle of vanilla extract, a dash of cinnamon, a dash of ginger, a dash of cloves, and then the rest of the banana to top it off. I’ll have to use your idea and try the chocolate on top!
Just made this for breakfast! It’s yummy but I had no idea how much sugar to put in as you just said to “sweeten to taste”. I only put in 1 tsp at first and that was no good so I ended up adding quite a bit more sugar! I should have assumed though that I would like roundabouts the same amount of sugar in my oatmeal as I would a typical cup of coffee!! Lesson learned 🙂
Try it with a melted banana in place of sugar sometime — it’s perfect that way!
https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2008/11/26/two-for-one/
This is one my fav. ways to make oatmeal! I haven’t done the ‘mexican hot chocolate version’ as suggested way above, but now I shall! I also really enjoy adding extracts: hazlenut and almond, occasionally a bit of caramel. Not all together of course!
why would i laughed to you… Once, I made oatmel, using coffee instead of water to cook it, and then I stirred chocolate-covered coffee beans in it 😀 It was delicious, I´m telling you 😉 I also like to mix my oatmeal with hot cocoa mix….
If I care what other people think about me? Not really, I only care what my loved-ones think about me, and that is only my family and a few friends 🙂 Others can think whatever, I respect it (unless they´re telling me what to do 😀 )
I’m going to make this for lunch, but instead of using instant coffee granules, I’m going to brew a cup of coffee and use it in place of the water. I’ll let you know how it turns out if you want 🙂
This is one of those food combinations that I would never have thought of. I had some for breakfast hot. Sooooo tasty. Then, I tasted it cold this evening. Sooooo tasty. I may have a new favorite breakfast. Incidentally, it works quite well using brewed coffee in place of the water and instant (I didn’t have any instant around).
Makes me wonder what other beverages could be used in oatmeal…
Maybe I’m missing something, but why is it so crazy to put coffee in oatmeal? I’ve been doing that since high school. My roommate used to brew coffee and use it instead of water.
This so NOT a crazy idea. Coffee+Oatmeal=Awesome! Ever since I started following your blog, I’ve been blending all kinds of things into my oatmeal from chia tea mix to lemons with banana. I absolutely ADORE how versatile oatmeal is!
I must try this particular combination, immediately!
I did this with quick oats and if you do that you have to scale back the liquid by 1/2-1 cup. It absorbed most of the liquid but not all.
Trying this again tonight!
This was so delicious! I just wondered if you could alter the amount of liquids and make it into a baked oatmeal cake? Baked oatmeal and coffee would equal a fabulous morning!
I agree… coffee baked oats sound delicious. I’ll have to work on a recipe! 🙂
YES, PLEASE! I was just going to say the same. Saw the title of this recipe the other day and was excited to make it this morning until i saw the overnight part 🙁 So i’ll be experimenting with my own baked version today.
Hey, I’m shopping for new dishes for my house and I was wondering where you got that black bowl?! it’s so nice and simple!
I think it was Garden Ridge. I’ve had it for awhile, though.
Hi Katie, I have a quick question for you. How many cups of oats do you use for 1 serving? I tried using 1/2 cup of oats, but it wasn’t enough to soak up all the liquid, so it didn’t turn out. I want to try it again, but I want to make sure I have enough oats. Thanks.
For this recipe, 1/2 cup of dry oats is 1 serving. Make sure you’re leaving it uncovered if using the microwave version.
I used to make something like this all the time. I would bring my dry oatmeal mix to work and add various flavored coffees rather than hot water (I don’t like my oatmeal overly soft so letting it sit until cool enough to eat was perfect). I tried it with various teas but other than chai they weren’t very good.
Katie, I found never laugh at you for this Frappucino oatmeal. I made it this morning and it is no laughing matter. Yummm! Topped it with banana and mini chocolate chips.
I made it with coffee instead of water and omitted the instant coffee granules…it was delicious!
This will be my brekky tomorrow…
Tried this for breakfast this morning and it was delicious! I love coffee & I love oats so this is perfect for me 🙂
Starbucks watch out!
I’m not a coffee drinker but this sounds delicious! I’m for sure trying this!
Check out my Nutrition blog at blogfoodforthought.com ! 🙂
I often put coffee in my oatmeal/cereal! Yay – I’m not the only one. Phew. Love that validation 🙂
OMG!! So good!! And yes, I ate it cold. 🙂 LOL I was sooo delicious!MY parents and grandparents wrinkled their noses at me but I didn’t care cause I loved it! 😛 Hahah!
Currently making this! Will let you know how it turns out. Question: why is it important to add the salt before cooking the oats?
So I’m not a complete weirdo for trying my overnight oats with a shot of espresso! In all honesty though it was pretty gross till I made banana soft serve to top it with!
you have no idea how much I love this recipe katie!!!
it literally is the reason I get out of bed so easily these days 😉
i have it at least 4 times a week for breakfast (hot) and don’t think I’ll ever get sick of it
the idea of adding salt is key!! that contributes so much to the flavour
I used to make my oats in the microwave plain with soy milk, and they were disgusting, like glue!!! thanks for showing me a healthy and DELICIOUS way to enjoy oats. feels like i’m having dessert every morning!
next up i’ll try the chocolate oatmeal 🙂
Hey Katie!
I saw this recipe, and i know you love dessert inspired oatmeal, so I thought you might wanna check it out
Well I just made this recipe! I am opting for to let it sit overnight. Already looks amazing. I also put a touch of cocoa powder in it.
Hey Katie.
First of all – I am a HUGE fan of your blog. Especially your breakfast recipes – I think I love breakfast (oatmeal!) more than you love chocolate (and that says a lot, I guess?).
Second, I am currently making a big ‘breakfast blogpost’. I am a danish vegan foodblogger – and I am so in love with this recipe! Can I have the permision to link it on the post as a ‘breakfast-favorite’?
I would very much appreciate it.
From Sara in DK.
PS. Sorry for my bad English 🙂
I just mixed instant irish cream flavour coffee with my oatmeal, just got this weird idea out of nowhere when i saw that i still had some instant coffee left 😀 then i googled if there actually was a recipe like that and found this:D mean i’m not crazy for mixing oatmeal with coffee,or at least i’m not the only one xD
It tastes amazing ^.^ gotta try your recipe next time 😉
Not sure why anyone would think you’re crazy. This sounds crazy delicious!! Contains some of my favorite things: oatmeal, coffee, and chocolate (duh!). I can’t wait to try this, along with the other hundreds of recipes on your site I’m dying to try. Love your site! 🙂 Keep your crazy recipes coming.
