Healthy Apple Crumble!
A little-known fact about me:
I love apple crumble so much that I sometimes choose it over chocolate.
I’ve been known to choose it over dinner, too. It all started during my freshman year of high school, one night before the prom, when my group of friends ate at a place called at Tony Roma’s. Naturally, all of the boys ordered steaks or ribs. And naturally, all of the girls ordered salads. Apparently that’s the stereotypical ladylike thing to do when you go out on a date.
Whatever.
Uninterested in the prospect of lettuce as dinner, I scoured the menu for something more substantial. For vegetarians, the offerings were pretty slim.
However, I noticed they had apple crumble on the dessert menu. Topped with ice cream, of course. So that became my dinner—and it was awesome. From then on, every time we went out to a not-so-vegetarian-friendly place like Tony Roma’s or Hard Rock or TGI Friday’s, I didn’t worry what to get for lunch or dinner… I just ordered apple crumble!
This healthy apple crumble reminds me of the one from Tony Roma’s–sweet cinnamon apples mixed with buttery crumbles… it is perfect for any time of the year (but especially Fall). It also makes a generous serving, not some little half-cup thing.
Try topping it with this recipe: Homemade Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.
And eat it for dinner!

Print This RecipeIngredients
- 1 medium-sized apple, diced small
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp milk of choice
- 1/2 tsp apple pie spice (you can probably sub cinnamon)
- 1 stevia packet or 1-2 tbsp sugar or sucanat
- optional add-ins: walnuts, raisins, etc.
- 3 tbsp quick oats (15g) (For substitution notes, see nutrition link below.)
- 2 tsp oat flour (or another flour of choice) (4g)
- 1 tbsp oil or butter-type spread (such as Smart Balance Light or Earth Balance) (15g) (For a fat-free substitution, see "nutrition facts" link below.)
Instructions
Healthy Apple Crumble Recipe: Preheat oven to 350 F and grease an oven-safe 2-cup dish. In a small mixing bowl, combine first five ingredients (and optional add-ins, if desired). Stir well. In a separate mixing bowl, combine remaining three ingredients and stir well. Now mix everything together and pour into the greased dish. (If you like a more-crumbly crumble, increase the amounts of the last three ingredients.) Bake 40 minutes (in the middle of the oven, not the very top), then turn the oven to high-broil for 2-3 minutes. Turn off heat, but let sit in oven 15 more minutes.

Hi, I’m wondering how you got less than 10 grams of fat for the entire serbing, when one tablespoon of butter has fifteen grams of fat. Did I do my calculations incorrectly or should you spilt the recipe into two servings?
I’d imagine she went by the Smart Balance Light listed first, which has 5 grams of fat per tablespoon according to their website.
I made this a few minutes ago, and it’s delicious! I actually microwaved it for 2 1/2 minutes since I was too impatient to wait for 40 minutes, but it turned out great!
I think it’s acceptable but I’m always one to have my dinner before dessert 😉
Omgggg!!! I’ve vbeen looking all over for a healthy but still actually looks like apple crumble recipe!
Of course, Katie saves the day again!
I just checked your home page and saw this and made a little “EEEEPP!” Sound, and the looks I got… Hehe can’t wait to try x
Could I sub the oil with peanut or almond butter? Mmm peanut butter apple crumble….
Delicious recipe – yum
OH muy GAWD! Perfect. I can’t wait to try all of these goodies from this week. Your are so talented Katie! Thank you.
i just made this! it makes so much i split it with my brother who loves apple pie, but is not vegan! like you suggested, i doubled the crumble ingredients and added some walnuts. i only used 1 tbsp of sugar in the mix, but after i put everything in the dish, i sprinkled some sugar on top so it would make a nice caramelized crust. i also used cinnamon cause i didnt have apple pie spice and it still tasted wonderful!
I used cinnamon too, and it came out really well! I like your idea to use less sugar and then put some on top. Apple Crumble Creme Brulee anyone?
I would so eat that for breakfast with some fat free Greek yogurt!
Hi, new reader here. Your crumble looks lovely. I love apple crumble, it’s so good at this time of year.
Absolutely acceptable!! I just had gluten free, dairy free healthy apple crisp!! My mom and I made it together!
This was DELICIOUS!!! 🙂
Thanks for the perfect dessert for a cold night. Your blog is the best!
This is a brilliant recipe! Apple Crumble is my one of my favorite foods. 🙂
Totally acceptable if it’s healthy.
And if it’s not . . . well, then it’s acceptable for special occassions. (Although I know a lot of people who’d disagree w/me on that.)
This is probably one of my favorite desserts of all time, baked apples + ice cream = heaven! I really love your photography skills as well 🙂
Hi Chocolate Covered Katie, I have to say that this is my first visit to your blog and as read all the post people write – I get the over bearing feeling that people are overjoyed to be involved in making desserts especially ones that have low calories. ps I think I keep this blog in my favourites list.
pahah
“Not some half cup thing”
Love this.
Exactly how I feel after reading the nutrition stats on every single recipe ever.
I absolutely LOVE Single Lady Recipes!!!! Katie, you are the BEST!!! 😀
Katie, I tried this out and it was delicious! My only problem was, after I broiled it for 2 minutes, some of the top bits were burned. Should I not use the high broil in that case? Thanks!
Hi!! I just want to complement you!!! So far everything of yours we have tried has been great. I am a mother of 5 with number 6 due in a few weeks- so we had to triple the recipe. My 11 year old and 14 year old made these for lunch today:-) they are fantastic. We used coconut oil and it was great. Thank you!!!!!
We usually eat a hi raw diet- finding your site has given us some fun- keep up the great work, you really have a gift!
Blessing- DJ
I have made this 4 times in the last two weeks. It is completely awesome and versatile. Be creative people! 🙂
Could I substitute the stevia with honey? I don’t have stevia right now and I don’t want to use pure white sugar. What do you recommend?
I know this is really late, but I did mine with just a little squeeze of agave and it turned out perfectly. Honey should work the same.
This is so good that I have made it two nights in a row! Delicious! We are eating it for dessert, not dinner, so it is enough for my husband and I to share. It’s a household fav for sure!
This would make a great breakfast!
Don’t eat butter. don’t eat flour but it looks great
Don’t you have dessert as well as dinner?
What a great idea! I’d eat this anytime of day 🙂
I just made this and it was so good. I didn’t want too much, so I split it into two ramakins and it was perfect for a desert for the two of us. Thanks!
Totally Awesome! I just made this! Gluten free, and I also made it clean eating by using honey instead. Delicious! Thanks 😀
Yowza! I had some peaches and apricots that I had to use up. Made this crumble with them. To die for. Thanks!
I would like to see more apple recipes in the future especially with apple season coming up!!! 🙂 Will definitely make this one though. Looks delicious 🙂
Definitely planning more apple recipes, hopefully starting in September with enchiladas 🙂
Could this be baked in a toaster oven or microwaved? I have a feeling that it can’t just because it has to be beaked for 40 minutes at 350 F, but I thought I should ask anyway. I don’t like using the oven a lot because it can make my kitchen way to hot 😛
I’d try a toaster oven. It might work!
I just made this using apples from my neighbor’s tree and it was delicious! I also topped it with this flavor of ice cream: http://bittersweetblog.com/2010/03/10/better-than-cheddar/. After trying this combination, I understand what’s so special about cheddar cheese and apple baked goods.
I’m going apple and peach picking this upcoming weekend. You can bet I will be trying this with apples AND peaches! Maybe not mixed together in one bowl, though. 🙂
SO PERFECT. I made this for myself and my parents tonight in ramekins and we loved it! We used 3 organic apples (honey crisp, golden delicious, and Granny Smith) from the Farmers’ Market, rolled oats, WW pastry flour, lots of cinnamon, and coconut oil. I used stevia in mine and raw turbinado sugar for my parents’. We also didn’t use any milk. It was a wonderfully satisfying fall dessert. Thanks!
Hi Katie! -waves- I’m pretty sure I’m your biggest fan… I make your recipes every day, and tell all of my friends/clients about your blog. You’re amazing!
Now…I’ve never altered your recipes, but I’m guilty here, and I had to share. I doubled the last ingredients, and -dun dun dun duuuuun!- MOLASSES! 1 tbs. I split it in half and shared with my fiance….Almost ate his share. The molasses gives it that “brown sugar” taste. I use this in recipes that call for brown sugar. Ill do xylitol and molasses usually, totally works! Just wanted to share because I’ve noticed brown sugar in some of your recipes and I know how you like to include substitutions! In this recipe no need for xylitol but the molasses made it that much better! Hope you try and like!
not exeptable
What temperature do you bake at?
Hi Katie! I just wanted to say that I absolutely loved this recipe! I’m not that good at cooking, but I wanted to try and it is so delicious (I’m eating it right now with a cup of coffee) Thanks for sharing it!
This is sooooo yummy!
I doubled the recipe, and it makes more than enough for 2. I used coconut oil, added some chia bran, and made extra crumble-using almond flour.
Unbelievably delish
Yummy. I’ve been playing with this recipe for the last week or so and so far haven’t managed to mess it up. I like it as written, but doubled for two of us. And I’ve used strawberries (on sale this week and I was dying for berries), with cinnamon instead of apple pie spice.
I’m curious about the last step of broiling and then leaving in oven. How does this help the recipe?
This is my all-time favorite CCK recipe!!!
I love this new flakes and nut cluster cereal I found. As soon as I tasted it, I knew it would make a great replacement for a crumb or crisp topping. I’m going to add that in when I make this. Will post results.
Has anyone tried doing this in the microwave? I did it a while ago, microwaved it for three minutes(with plastic wrap on it), and put it under the broiler for 2-3 minutes. It worked really well
Apple crumble is amazing! We live close to this amazing group of orchards called Apple Hill (in California; I’m in Nevada) and each year for my sister’s birthday we go over there and go apple picking, and then I always make an apple crumble when we get home. I think I’ll try making individual ones with this recipe this year! 🙂
I love your blog! I’m making this recipe for breakfast tomorrow morning! 🙂
Hello, Katie! I’ve been following your blog for months and I just love it. It’s my first time leaving a comment, but this was my first time trying one of your recipes and I felt the urge to share the outcome. This crumble was mind-blowing! Thank you for sharing all these fantastic and healthy recipes.
Best wishes from Spain,
xxx
Is there a way you could microwave this instead of putting it in the oven for so long and still get the cooked apples and desired “crisp”?
Thanks!
I’ve not tried, but you can definitely experiment!
My husband gave me ramekins for Christmas, specifically so I could make some of Katie’s single-serving recipes. Oh man…apples, pecans, and I tried molasses instead of sugar as somebody suggested…I am in a la mode heaven right now!
Tried this recipe and it was amazing! Added chopped walnuts, extra cinnamon, and some chocolate chips. Thanks Katie!
I’m not gonna lie, my son’s birthday cake has been calling to me in the kitchen. I decided not to give in tonight, that I’d make myself a healthier dessert so I made the healthy apple crumble . SO good!!!! Also so glad I didn’t have to share my dessert with anyone else ? Can’t wait to try more of your recipes!

Lol, I would go for the ribs and the apple crumble!
Made this yesterday for a friends get together, tripled the recipe. It was delicious. I will make again. Thank you!
Hi there! Love this recipe. Apple crumble is my fav! I would like to make a big casserole size. What would you recommend I do about the quantity of the ingredients? Should I quadruple the recipe lol? Maybe more🤷♀️
