Hi Katie, I have only been following your blog for a short time, but I felt compelled to say something in response to this post. Dogs are amazing creatures, the way they truely do become family members. I feel for you and your sadness. Last summer my family had to put down my dog, Carmel. We had her for 13 amazing years and she had most definately a vital family member. It was a horrible process to have to put her down and leave the vet’s office without her in our arms and the healing process took a long time. I still cry occasionally when I come home from college and realize there is no white ball of energy to greet me. You should not feel pressured to “get over it” or even pull yourself together for a few days. The healing process is challenging and not something to push away.
I’m sure you are getting hundreds of comments similar to this, but I just felt like I needed to say something.

So sorry for your loss. What a beautiful dog who looked full of love and personality. There is much to learn from dogs about how to behave towards others that we humans should note and learn. One thing is for sure, dogs never feel the need to explain or apologize for having feelings and showing them. It’s OK for you to be less than cheerful and your readers love and accept you for that so PLEASE don’t be sorry for feeling sad, regrouping and taking time to mourn your loss. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for it.

I’m so sorry to hear about Molly, Katie! We had to put our precious little Chaos down a couple of months ago and I still occasionally expect him to come running up to me when I feed our other dog. Losing pets is so hard. They are truly part of the family and the family just seems incomplete without them. Hugs to you and your family sweetie.

Dogs are family members. I’m so sorry you lost her, you’re right, you made a good decision by gently ending her pain. I had to make that decision with my life long dog (he was 13) a few years ago. I still miss him, we still talk about him…but the memories are good. We planted a tree in his honor, on his birthday a few years back. It’s a lime tree, so everytime we have limes from that tree, it of course reminds us of him.

So sorry you lost your little Molly, she sounds like such a sweet, wonderful pup! Take your time to heal, get some closure… not blogging for a while won’t kill anyone, trust me! 🙂 I’m looking forward to your return 🙂

Aw, girl, don’t you dare feel sorry for being sad about this!! Losing a pet is SO hard. We put our old dog down a year and a half ago, and I still miss his stinky breath and crotch-sniffing ways (he was a real charmer with our guests, I’ll tell ya). Take as long as you need…sending you a big hug!!

I truly do understand. I had to put my dog, Newman, down a few months ago.

He was truly MY dog, and my best friend/companion of 12 years. I got him as a puppy when I was fourteen (in 7th grade) and he passed away just before my 26th birthday, so he pretty much grew up with me.

Nothing could’ve prepared me for that loss. Because it’s a different kind of loss.
I grieved so deeply over him, and I still miss him all the time. But time does heal.
It does get better.

Nothing and No one can replace your Molly. She was special and you were as lucky to have her as she was to have you. Just remember, she’s waiting at the other side of the rainbow bridge…

My Princess died last year from lymphoma rather suddenly as well. She was old and just had surgery to remove her spleen a few months prior and was jumping around, like her old self again. Then she just collpased. I had been preparing myself for her death for about two years and ironically, it was almost a relief that I didn’t have to worry about her dying anymore. I still miss her so much though. I had a dream last night that she was still alive and celebrating her 15h birthday 🙁

I have commented on your blog a couple of times, but I wanted to express my condolences to you and your family. This is not at all to trivialize or negate your own pain-everyone has a story, and I respect that-but I often like to hear other’s stories when I am grieving. Just last month, I lost both of my dogs. I was two hours away in college, and I received a phone call from my dad that one of my dogs had a massive tumor on her heart and liver. I rushed home to spend time with her before she was euthanized. I had to return to school, but just two days later, I received another heart-wrenching call that my other dog had also been the victim of a number of tumors. She was also put to sleep. Again, I don’t mean to take away from your hurt, but I find that hearing other’s stories brings me comfort and a feeling of unity. Email me if you need to talk! This is a poem called “The Rainbow Bridge” that I read every time an animal dies.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

We lost our cat the same way. Not an easy thing to go through. I still think back on her and remember her little quirks that made her that much more special. So don’t worry about blogging for a bit. Heal up. Remember the good times. Know that you have friends that understand.

I’m thinking of you. This post brought me to tears too, no dog is just a dog and no pet is just a pet in my eyes. Hope you feel at least a little better soon x

I’m so sorry. I lost my first dog when I was 24. I had had him since I was 9. Each day will be easier, but you never really get over because you have lost a piece of your heart. I’m thinking of you and of Molly. This is such a hard time. I wish we never had to go through things like this.

I was hoping that this wasn’t the reason for you being quiet – I am so, SO sorry and my thoughts are with you. Your tribute to Molly is beautiful.

I can really relate because we had to have Cora put down in December (she was a trooper of a cat right till the very end) and Dave died on Monday (he was such a strong cat so it was frightening seeing him deteriorate so rapidly). Dave’s death hit us especially hard because it was so sudden. Cora had been ill for a long time and we knew her time was near (not that her dying was in any way less sad, but we had come to terms with it long before it happened). I miss them both so much. Dave was my baby and my best friend.

Pets are members of the family and no apologies should be made for mourning and crying when we lose them. Anyone who thinks otherwise?… well, I don’t want to hear their opinion. Don’t feel bad for not posting – please take all the time you need! If you ever want to talk (to a random stranger, I guess) to vent and get it all out, then please don’t hesitate to e-mail me.

Great dogs like Molly are never “just a dog.” They really are part of the family, and losing them feels like having a piece of you torn out. I am so, so sorry for your loss; I’ve been there and I know how empty it feels when you keep expecting them to come running around the corner with their tail wagging. My thoughts are with you and your family!

Hang in there Katie. I lost a very loyal and loved Corgi a few years ago. It tore me apart. I had to leave college and come home in the middle of the week during my student teaching because I couldnt pull myself together. In a way, you get closer to your pets than anything/anyone else. They know your every move. They can predict what you will do or how you will treat them in any given moment. Pets are such gifts. It really helped me to heal by remembering the good things and by putting a really nice picture of her in a frame. I can see it every day and it makes my heart smile. You just have to think that maybe there is a new place to put your energy and love into…maybe your other pup, a friend in need, or a new pup some day 🙂 Keep your head up.

I am so sorry for your loss. I completely understand your sadness. My two dogs are part of the family. My oldest daughter, Lauren lives in another city and she has a dog..Zeke is my granddog. 🙂 My youngest daughter, Molly, was a groomer at PetSmart for several years. She groomed a lot of Mollys…which she referred to as Molly Jr.s. 🙂 I want to leave you with a quote that may help somewhat.

I am so sorry about Molly! I had to put my Boston Terrier, Timmy, to sleep in September. It was hardest thing I have ever had to do, and I still think about his every single day. However, I am comforted by knowing that he is running free chasing water hoses and eating endless bowls of human food. Take comfort in knowing that Molly had a wonderful life with you and your family. You gave her a precious gift of love, compassion, and dignity in her final days.

Aww I am so so sorry! I know exactly how you feel. We had to put my cat, Socks, to sleep on New Years day because her liver was failing and she had the same symptoms as your Molly. Oh I am so sorry, but at least now she is not in any pain. I’ll be sending prayers your way.

We had to put my dog down last summer. It was the saddest and most heartbreaking experience ever. It truly is losing a member of your family. I’m so sorry for your loss. Our dog went very suddenly as well. It’s terrifying to know you have such little time left with someone you love so much.

I totally understand why you didn’t want to blog yesterday. When we had to put my dog down, I couldn’t stop sobbing. In fact, it still saddens me to think about her. However, just comfort yourself with the thought that although her physical body isn’t with you, she will always be in your heart, and one day, you’ll see her again.

Anyone who would say that Molly was “just a dog” and you should get over it is a callous tool who is incapable of emotion. Dogs are family members and I have had to endure the unfortunate pain of losing two beloved friends on two separate occasions, each as difficult as the other. So sorry for the loss of your family member. It is not something that you can just “get over”. But, rest assured that you will harbor the fond memories you had together for years to come. I volunteer at the SPCA (an animal shelter) and sometimes I’ll notice a dog missing, ask if he’s out on a walk or has been adopted, but when they shake their head ‘no,’ I just want to cry. Dogs really aren’t just animals, their perfect souls created to love and be loved (actually, I think ALL animals were created for that).

I’m glad you believe Molly is in a better place, having fun. I’m sure she’s your new guardian angel. 🙂

Dear Katie, I’m so sorry about Molly! Things like that are always very difficult. I was a mess after we put our first dog to sleep. I’m sure she was the most wonderful pet that any family could ask for and you gave her all the love you had. You made her a very happy dog for her 12 years and you two were lucky to have each other.

Only a person who’d never experience the joy of having a dog would say “Get over it.” Dogs really are man’s best friend and are there for you no matter what. They don’t hold grudges, don’t criticize, and they’re ALWAYS happy to see you. It’s amazing how their smiling dog faces and their antics can lift our hearts and brings us such joy. My heart really goes out to you. I myself have never lost a dog, but my Jessie is now 7 so I know it is something I will have to face eventually. I hate to even think about it. She is my daughter. That’s so sad, pets really are family members, even with their shorter lifespans. And they all have their own personalities and quirks. It looks Molly had a good life with you and brought a lot of joy into your lives.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Dogs are the most amazing friends and it hurts terribly to lose one. I had a dog growing up who was my absolute best friend and it was devastating when she died. Even years later when I would go to my parents’ house I would expect to see her running around the corner to greet me with her labradorian smile. Now she is a happy, happy memory. It hurt when she left but I wouldn’t have traded my time with her for anything. I wish you comfort without forgetfulness.

Oh Katie, you have every right to be sad. In fact, it’s good for you to be sad right now and not bottle it up. Our society has a hard time with grief and any way you can express it will be helpful for you. I lost my dog last August, then cat in October and it was devastating. One was very sudden, like your Molly. It can put you into a state of shock for awhile. I am sure you will miss her lots, and that’s ok. She sounds like she was a very special dog. Dog/human love is like no other. Wish I was there to give you a big hug and a shoulder to cry on. Take care.

I haven’t left a comment since I introduced myself some time back, but I have remained a loyal reader, and I definitely noticed when you didn’t post yesterday.

I just wanted to let you know how incredibly sorry I am, and I completely understand what you are going through. My beloved dog, Lucy, was hit by a car almost 2 1/2 years ago, and to say it was one of the most devastating times in my life would not be an exaggeration. Like Molly, she was one of those dogs whom EVERYONE (dog haters included) loved, and to this day, I still miss her SO much. I hesitate to offer any kind of advice, because I know a lot of time attempts to do so don’t help at all, but one of the few things that someone (my mom, in this case) said to me that actually did help was the following: not only think about the wonderful times you shared with Molly, but also take courage and feel joy in the fact that you provided her with the best, happiest life she could have had.

That truly is one of the most hardest things to deal with. Dogs are never just dogs, dogs are more then that. They’re our companions. They’re there for us no matter what we feel like. If we’re sad, sick, angry, they are always there to show us there love and attention.

I’m sorry for your loss about Molly. She seems like she was and still is a great dog. I remember when my first dogs was put down. It was heart breaking because of the personality she had. I wasn’t even home to see her I was at girl scout camp that’s the worst part. Although a part of me wishes I could’ve said my good byes, but she was in such bad shape I probably didn’t even want to see her. I can only hope she knew how much I loved her and wanted to say good bye. The sad part is she ate some paint balls that we’re on the floor in my brothers room. There was even a bag of oreos right by them, but she ate the paint balls instead. So a word of advice keep paint balls away from dogs because they do have pig fat in them that you’re dog may be able to smell.

Oh, and now I fear having to put down my other dog because she is 15. I have a feeling her body will give up on her behind she wants.

Again I’m so sorry for your lost. It’ll be hard for a while, but eventually it’ll get better when you think about Molly. You’ll start thinking of all the good things about her and now at how gone she is. I’m sure Molly is happy now and up in doggy heaven and you never know maybe she’s up with Harris having a blast.

We’ve never met in person but I want to hug you. So glad you gave Molly such a happy life, so sorry you had to lose her so suddenly. Take as long a break as you need from posting — we all understand. And we don’t need you to be cheerful and happy all the time either, if that’s not how you’re feeling. Sad is okay too.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel. Molly was a part of your family and the loss is devastating. I went through basically the same thing as you just over 3 years ago. It hurt so bad I never did get another dog – I just don’t want to go through that again!

I’m so sad for your loss, Katie. Pets make there own place in our heart, and no matter how many pets may come after, that place never goes away. After once really looking into a dogs eyes no other dog will be the same. You may love them but they won’t be the same. A dog my family had had since I was born disappeared when I was eleven; we can only assume that the coyotes got him. 🙁 He was a little miniature schnauzer named Spencer, and I still feel sad thinking of that little dog even those he’s been gone almost 14 years. Animals are precious things. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I’m so sorry. Just a few weeks ago we had to put down our 9 year old German Shepherd for this sudden-onset illness (suspected cancer) when he had been fine just a few weeks prior. While I am grateful he didn’t suffer long, it’s so hard when you have this dog that seems fine one day and is about to die the next. It’s like you don’t have time to get used to the idea of them being gone, you know?

Please know you are in my thoughts.

I cry at the thought of my horse dying, because she is my best friend. Seeing the heartbreak on my sister’s face when her horse was put down was horrible 🙁 so I know how you feel. I’m so so so sorry Katie. I just moved away from home, and have to leave my babies (two cats) with my mom’s partner and I’m in so much pain from that… I can’t even begin to imagine to the pain in which you and your family members as well as those lives Molly had touched are feeling. You’re right she’s not just a “dog”. My heart goes out to you and those affected.

Awww… I’m sorry. My dog died a couple years ago and it was so sad not to see him playing in the yard, sleeping on the porch, and bothering the neighbors. I know how you feel!

Oh, Katie, I’m so very sorry…so much so that I’m in tears writing this comment. I know how hard it must’ve been to lose Molly, and how important she was in your daily life – there’s no way to adjust to that kind of abrupt change. Do not feel the need to apologize or try to make yourself better tomorrow because in reality, you won’t be. It’ll take time, but I hope our love and support will help you through this tough time!

I remember losing my beloved german shepherd, Dino, while I was away at college sophomore year. It hurt as much as losing any person could. Know that at the very least, you and your family gave Molly the best life you possibly could, and what dog could want anything better?

I won’t say feel better soon or anything because it took me so long to get past my dog’s death. Take your time, and work through it in the best way for you! My heart goes out to you, Katie. I’ll be thinking about you!

I’m sorry to hear you’ve lost your friend. It will be like losing family members when my cats eventually go. When I was growing up my best friends had a scottie and she was the dog that got me to like dogs. Take care of yourself, it’s ok to be sad.

aww.. bless your heart. i have a long haired mini dachshund and a boxer. one night the doxie (jonesy) got lost and it was the most heart wrenching thing i’ve been through (b/c i don’t have any kids). i can only imagine that i will be a basket case when it’s their time…

I am so sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a loved one (even a pet) especially when it is so unexpected. I feel for you and I couldn’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t. You are such a positive and wonderful person and you deserve the love and support of all of your readers. I’m sure it will be hard to get over, but this was a wonderful post for remembering Molly’s beauty. I like the idea of remembering someone in loving and happy ways after they are gone and celebrating their life and the joy they brought to yours. Better to have had Molly for a short time in your life than to have never had her at all. Hopefully Henry can still bring a smile to your face.

Katie, my heart goes out to you and your family. Molly was beautiful; thank you for sharing so many pictures and memories. We had to put down my childhood dog back in 2004 (she was 15 years old) and I still miss her. I’m so sorry for your loss and I hope that you’re doing okay.

Katie, I am so sorry for all of you. Having lost my friend, a pet, already, I know what it means. And I would like to give you some advice. Go and really take all the time you need and I am not going to say “take the time you need until you are over it”, because you will never be “over it”, the pain will never stop completely and you will never forget Molly. But some day, eventually, after you let her go, truly let her go, you will be able to grieve without having tears in your eyes, but a laughter instead in your face and the pain will ease a bit.. Trust me. Just take your time. And don´t try to pull yourself together, there simply is no need to. We too can, like other nations, grieve properly, as otherwise you will never be able to cope with the pain of having lost a beloved dog.
I will leave you with these words and I hope you will be able to sleep at night and find some time to celebrate she was in your all lifes and give her the best funeral you can.

I’m sorry you had to lose another dog. I remember when my first dog died, I was upset for that entire day, and it took a while to heal. My mother picked me up from school after going to the vet to have him euthanized; he had cancer too, leukemia, something I didn’t understand at the time. I know it’s hard to recover from losing someone or something special, so of course, I’m not offended at all. I hope that after writing this blog about such a sweet dog made you feel even a little better. I know she can never be replaced, but it’s not like she’s gone forever; you still have good memories to keep her spirit with us. Fond memories of pets and people close to us are always pleasant. I never had a pet in my life, so I would never know what it feels like to lose one.
But from all of your past posts on Molly, I could really tell you loved her very much. And losing a loved one is heartbreaking.

I am so very sorry for your loss. We lost our beloved rescue mix, Kali, last Halloween at 14.5 years old. I still miss her, but the heartbreak has subsided with time. Watching a good friend age and endure pain is difficult; facing a life-altering decision is excruciating. My heart goes out to you and your family. Be patient; healing takes time. Fortunately, memories last forever.

You’re Molly was so beautiful and perfect. I’m so sorry for your loss. There will always be a Molly shaped hole in your heart but it will get easier. I am so sorry to read this post. My heart breaks for you. Our pets are not just pets, they are family. They are the only family member that is always excited to see us. My best friend just lost her dog to cancer and it happened as quickly as you described. She found a website called Chase Away K9 Cancer, I know it might be to raw right now but check it out when you are ready. It’s a worthy cause… cancer affects more than just human lives. It just sucks. My thoughts and prayers are with you. And I understand not wanting to blog. You don’t need to explain a thing, girlfriend.

Awww…I’m so sorry. I had a cat, but my dad threw it out (like a garbage…) while I was in China. I kept wondering if he was dead, freezing or if somebody was nice enough to give him a home. Ugh, thinking about this makes me sad.

Hey Katie, I have been following your blog recently (and LOVE it by the way!) and just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss 🙁 I lost my dog to very similar issues about a month ago. She was about 15, and the light of my life. Same thing, deteriorated so rapidly. She has had many many skin issues and all of a sudden she seemed to just perk up, act young again, her skin completely cleared her hair grew back.. things were looking great after all of her bouts with prednisone, antibiotics, different meds for her allergies. I took her to the vet to get her nails clipped, they wanted to do some blood work because she had lost weight (But she looked good, not too thin and I figured it was just because she was off the prednisone) turns out her liver enzymes were elevated, but not terribly high. She was still eating, acting good, not jaundiced at that time. About a month later she lost more weight, wasn’t eating, shaking, and one day couldn’t walk for about 20 minutes. I brought her to the vet that afternoon, her enzymes were still up about the same level but she was jaundiced, weak, her white blood cell count was up. There wasn’t much we could do. I just wanted to keep her comfortable and she wasn’t appearing to be suffering at that time. She was started on a bunch of meds, she was already on an herbal for the liver, started on 3 different antibiotics, a liver/bile secreting medication, pepcid, etc.. and she started looking better. About a week later she just deteriorated so fast, was having trouble breathing, more jaundiced, distended belly, and just looked so sad. We brought her to the emergency vet it was the middle of the night. There was stuff they could do, but it was just torture and wouldn’t prolong her life much longer. It was then that I made the hardest (but best decision for her) decision of my life to put her to sleep. It felt so wrong because it wasn’t her regular vet who helped me make that decision, and I had a very hard time making that decision. I held her tight as they injected the medication, and said my goodbyes. Dogs are like family, and I miss her every day. I cry about it, and then laugh at the happy memories. I made a beautiful scrapbook in her honor. She gave me so much love, and she had a good life, and that comforts me. I knew it was coming, but it didn’t make it any easier. You will get through this, and it is going to hurt. I am sure Molly was an amazing dog/companion/family member, and am very sorry for your loss 🙁 Hang in there, and keep smiling that beautiful smile because she is looking down on you every day.

I cried most of the way through this, as you wouldn’t believe this, but we had to put our Beagle Molly down 2 weeks ago. We had noticed she was off her food too and also that she seemed to be coughing alot through the night. The Vet also referred us to a specialist who after the ultrasound, said she was riddled with cancer, had bad heart disease and had around 4 litres of fluid in her tummy. Poor darling, she was so unwell, so we knew we couldn’t keep her suffering like that. My 4 kids were so distraught but I have to say that the best thing we ever did was buy another Beagle so that they could go on rejoicing in having such a loving faithful dog around. There are still sad days her but Desoto is already entrenched in the family and beginning to fill the “Molly” shaped hole.

Katie i follow your blog religiously and i know that you are so strong and you WILL get through this. i’m so sorry for your loss. just know that she’s looking down on you from doggie -heaven and she’s in paradise =)<3

I definitely know how you feel. What you are going through. The overall sadness is from missing Molly. If you become angry, just keep in mind all those wonderful days, weeks, months and years with her. Memories help us with our feelings. Keep them ALL, near and dear to your heart. No one can take those precious Molly-times away from you and your family.

Our beloved Nikki was also stricken with cancer. She was 13 when we had to put her at rest. We kept her alive (medication) for a year. It was my decision, but the vets suggestion. I feel that Nikki suffered unnecessarily. I would not do it again. Each pet deserves good quality of life. Our wonderful other (poochie) family members ….. Panda, Maxx, Ruby, Jordan, Ginger, Melody, Miles, Lucy and most recently, Jamie. Each “kid” was more fun than the last. They were all happy. Healthy too until their time was up. I also rescued 3 kitties inbetween all the poochies. Always a blast in our household!

For sure, with each and every precious pet that we must say goodbye to, in countless ways we also die a little. Our hearts. That’s how it is with me.

Rainbow Bridge Poem
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

Molly reminds me so much of my own beloved dog. That was very brave of you; I’m glad she didn’t have to suffer needlessly. Please be strong and remember that Molly is at peace now.

I only just discovered your blog last week, but I’ve been reading like a fiend and adore it, and I am so, so sorry to hear about your loss of Molly. Pets ARE full family members in my book, and I know how hard it is–We had to let my first dog go when a terrible combination of illnesses rapidly took her good health when she was only five. It was such a hard decision and it broke everyone’s heart to lose her.

You should definitely take as much of a break as you need during this difficult time <3

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. I know the pain of having to put a dog down, we had to do the same thing with the dog I grew up with a few years back. Unless you go through it, it’s impossible to understand – sometimes I still get choked up thinking about it. Molly was such a lucky dog to be surrounded and taken care of a family that loved and protected her to the fullest. You are in my thoughts!

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that Molly was “only a dog.” I know as well as anyone that she was part of your family and I know how terribly you must feel her loss.

I have an almost 18 year old bird who has recently lost his sight and is now appearing to have some equilibrium problems. I fear I may have to make the same decision you did soon.

I am so sorry, I know how painful it is to lose a dog, which is like your family member. Late 2009 I was walking my two dogs and pitbulls came out of no where and attacked them. The vets couldn’t do much for them because they got vital organs punctured and they had to be put down. They were only 5 and 6. I miss them and I’m in tears thinking about them and Molly too. Hopefully they’re playing in heaven.

Oh, Katie, this post made me cry! I am so sad for you too. Losing a pet is terrible and definitely not something one “gets over” instantly. Just like yours, my dogs are real family members, and I cannot even fathom how sad I would be if one of them died this suddenly. I’ve always loved the posts where you share your dogs with us. Molly sounds like she was a sweet and wonderful dog and that she was very lucky to be part of your family! I am so sorry for you and hope you are able to stay strong through everything!

Katie I’m so sorry to read about Molly. I still remember very clearly the day I had to put my cat to sleep. Same situation, he was just fine and all of sudden collapsed and deteriorated due to internal organ failing. The best thing for him was to relieve his misery, but it broke my heart! So I feel your pain 🙁 A pet is never just a pet. They’re part of the family! Lots of hugs and take care! Blogging shouldn’t be a priority now.

That post made me tear up. I am sitting here right now with my dog in my lap and I can’t even begin to think about what I would do without her. I feel so sorry for you. I went through this with two cats in the past three years, and it did feel like I lost family members both times. I have no doubt that she could feel your love every single second she lived. <3 Take all the time you need. Our pets are like our children; I know! I even have a human child and I still feel the same way about my furbabies.

i lost my cat to a sudden heart attack a year and a half ago and i still miss him, and sometimes a few tears still slip out…yes, that happens after 13 years of having someone in your life. you will cry for a long time…cry as much as you need. i know what it’s like to feel this way. one day my cat was here, i let him out to go to potty, and then he was dead, and a hole was left. i’m sorry for your loss. time heals, but the heart never forgets.

I´m so sorry for your loss! I´ve lost pets myself and I know how hard it is to deal with the pain. A pet is never only a pet but a member of the family which deserves to be mourned. Soon you will be able to remember the good times you had with your wonderful dog, laugh about all the funny situations she brought you in and treasure the memory. Until then, just take your time, cry as much as you want and don´t let anybody tell you she was “just a dog”.

I’m so sorry for your loss. When you have dog they seriously do become a member of the family. The dog I’ve had since i was 8 lives at my parents house and every time i visit them i spend most of my time on the ground, petting her and loving her. She is now 13 and i fear for the things you mentioned in this post. I know when she goes it will be absolutely devastating for me so i can totally sympathize with you and hope you start to feel better soon!

Oh, I hate that it happened so suddenly! Literally leaving you no time to prepare and be at peace with it. Loosing a dog is like loosing a family member in my opinion. And I’m just as sorry for the loss. I still get teary eyed when I think about my old dog Squirt!

I’m so sorry to read this. If anyone EVER said Molly was just a dog to you, I’d be forced to gnaw them. These guys aren’t “just” anything! They are our babies, our family, our friends. I’m so so sorry you lost her so fast. My favorite rattie, Jack, passed away suddenly recently, too. He had lung tumors and went from fine to gasping in hours. The only option was to let him go. It still hurts hurts hurts and I know it always will.

I’m so sympathize with your loss and my heart aches with yours. Molly was a lucky girl to have such a wonderful life and to be so very very loved. *hugs*

JUST A DOG

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,”or “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance travelled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog,” then you probably understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.”Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, they are not “just a dog”but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that she’s not “just a dog” but the one that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man” or “just a woman.”

So, so, soooo sorry to hear about your dog. We had a cairn terrier that we had to put down suddenly after only 3.5 years. My husband, a 40 year old trucker, called me at work bawling.

There’s no such thing as “just a dog”.

i am so sorry katie! i have had two dogs (that i was old enough to remember) be put to sleep after old age and health problems and it is tough. Its definitely okay to cry, be emotional and take time off from blogging (work, school, etc) so that you can grieve. I hope you know we are all here for you.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know all too much how that feels. I lost my dog a few months ago to cancer and like Molly she passed away very quickly. One day she was fine and the next week she was gone. I can’t say enough how much I feel for you and you are certainly in my thoughts.

Oh my goodness sweetie! I’m just getting caught up on your posts. I am SO SO sorry for your loss! My cat, Nala had to be put down last year and it was so hard for me. She had been with me for 6 long years and I watched as the last year of her life was spent fighting an uphill battle against hyperthyroidism. It caused her heart to weaken, her energy to dwindle, and eventually she was only a ghost of who she once was. I must’ve cried for a week after her death and still, over 8 months later, I get teary eyed when I see old pictures of her. I completely understand your grief and I think that until you live through the death of a dear pet, you can never really “get it.”

I have a Labrador Retriever who will be eleven years old at the end of July. In the past year, he has aged a lot; and I know that he won’t live forever. It makes me sad to see him getting older, and I am trying to shower him with all of the love and attention that I can before the time comes. My heart goes out to you….Pets are family!

Losing a furry friend is one of the hardest things to go through because dogs are one of the few creatures in life that bring us so much good with so little bad. They love us unconditionally, will rarely disagree with you and will always be happy to see you at the end of the day. It is completely understandable that you’d be sad and as someone above said, it is okay to take all the time you need for yourself right now.

In the first picture your arm looks normal-sized, not skinny. How were you able to keep weight on as a child? Don’t children have faster metabolisms?

Katie, I didn’t know about Molly until now and felt the need comment. Anyone who says a beloved pet is “just” a dog or “just” a cat must be “just” heartless or “just” an idiot or maybe “just” a heartless idiot!
Our pets are an integral part of our families and their loss is deeply painful. They give so much love and joy and ask for so little in return. My Sugar Bear was a black Cocker Spaniel and was the joy of my life for 13 years before dying of bone cancer. That was 7 years ago and I still think of her and miss her every day. My consolation is that from the moment I brought her home, she had a wonderful life. She was loved and pampered and was a joyful, intelligent, insightful companion. When I was sick she would lie quietly beside me and when I was sad she would give me extra kisses and console me. She was very protective – barking if someone set one foot onto her mom’s property; and if she perceived any aggression towards me (verbal or physical), she would give a loud warning and if the aggressor did not retreat, she had some sharp teeth! I never felt alone or afraid when my Sugar Bear was alive. So, Katie, I totally understand your loss and your grief. Take consolation in knowing what a wonderful life you gave your Molly. She was grateful and she loved you.

Katie, I really do not want to remind you of this painful period of your life but I lost my beautiful mini 2 days back and I am going mad with grief. I just feel I will never be happy again. I do not know anyone else who feels so strongly about their pet and I am reaching out for a bit of support. I feel like my heart is breaking into a thousand pieces. Mini wasn’t even old, she was just 9 :(:(:(. And I have been abroad for the last 6 months and she was perfectly fine till last to last week. When I heard she was ill, I rushed back only to see her one last time and the guilt of not being there for her during her illness is eating me alive. I am sorry for ranting, I am too distressed. All I want to know is, will this pain really pass? Will it really get better with time? Everyone tells me it will but I’m finding it hard to believe it at the moment. If someone who has been through the same pain tells me, maybe I will see a little hope.

Oh, by the way, when I said I was abroad, I don’t mean I put mini in a shelter or anything. She was with my parents and sister and they were taking good care of her. Basically, she was our family dog (or more like a family member) and since I lived with my parents till very recently, she has always been a part of my life.

Awww -I know this post was from a year ago, but reading it still makes me cry! It is so wonderful to know that there are people who really, truly love their pets. In a world where there are so many animals that are treated…well…not nicely (to say the least). Knowing that Molly spent her days watching Meercat Manor, playing tug-of-war, and hiding her bones makes me smile 🙂 You are all AMAZING for giving her such a happy and I am sure you all made her just as happy as she made all of you!!! *years* ago…sorry…I forgot this is 2013 for a minute there – I was thinking it was 2012…ok, definitely time for some coffee and chocolate! Hehehehe…

Dogs (or any pets) are not just animals – they’re part of the family and it’s very sad when they have to leave. We’ve had 4 dogs over the years and now have a huge cat (21 lbs)! Our first dog (Lazz) was the only one we had from puppy stage up. Once was enough for a puppy:-) First off, about a month after we got him he swallowed my embroidery needle with orange thread on it! Important because we had to watch for that needle to “come out” after he was x-rayed and it was determined it was in a safe place. We had gave him bread to coat it and it eventually made it’s way out doing no harm & w/o surgery. The orange thread made it noticeable in the backyard!! When he was a little older – maybe 3 – we went to the lake for the weekend and left him home because it was raining. Well, I’d hid a 2 lb. box of dark chocolate covered Russell Stovers almonds in my closet for my husband for Father’s day after we came home, and didn’t shut the door good. We came home to find brown wrappers all over the house – and most of the candy gone! He was part lab so was fairly heavy, but 2 lbs. was a lot for a dog. The vet still determined it was okay unless he started looking or acting sick. He didn’t but I learned a lesson! Nothing within his reach! Well – almost – we were again at the lake and took him that time. Our son (about 8 at the time) was in the parking lot riding his 3-wheeler and ran into a tree. Our dog had been up there with him and came back to the boat by himself. We had to go find out why. We were afraid his wrist was broken so took him to the ER. Had to leave the dog in the (house)boat. We’d grilled ribs and hadn’t had time to eat dinner yet – yep – we forgot and left them on the kitchen counter. Really just didn’t want to take time to do anything with them since our son was crying! The dog made it up on the table where he could reach the counter (is how we think he did it)!! Which is why we always got older dogs after that
🙂 !! The next dog, Cricket, ate a whole loaf of bread the first time we kept her. A girl next door found her at a Safeway store in the back by the trash and knew we’d just lost our dog Lazz. She brought her to us and we couldn’t turn her down – cute dog but a little bit older (about 1)! We decided she’d probably been living on bread in that parking lot and didn’t know that wasn’t dog food! She soon found out though. Next dog was Bandit – white with black around one eye! She met us at the boat every Friday night and then tried to follow us out on day so we wound up bringing her home and keeping her. Well – that was about a $200.00 dog! We had her spayed and she got an infection, etc.!! Wiggles, our last dog, was my husband’s favorite and really his dog. When we lost her (15 yrs) he said no more dogs. Well – I brought home a stray cat 🙂 Wasn’t a dog but now he says no more pets!! But after Wiggles he couldn’t let himself get attached to another dog. It’s so hard to lose them, but we give them such a good life while they’re here I think it’s totally worth it. Sorry this is so long – again, I’m also sorry about Molly. You’ll always miss her but will be able to remember her with smiles.
