Oh my goodness, yes! In just 5 minutes, you can make this decadent-yet-good-for-you chocolate oatmeal for one.

It’s like dessert for breakfast!

I don’t let chance dictate whether my day gets off to a good start. I’d rather make sure it’ll be a good day… by consuming chocolate first thing.

Sometimes, it’s in the form of my Chocolate Banana Bread.

Or this ultra creamy Vegan Chocolate Mousse.

But often, it simply means mixing a spoonful of chocolate peanut butter into my morning oatmeal, or cutting a big hunk off a 100% chocolate bar to eat on the side of whatever breakfast I might be having.

Chocolate Oatmeal Recipe

This easy chocolate oatmeal can be made in just five minutes and is perfect for a healthy breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup milk of choice
  • 1 overripe banana (here's a banana-free version)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • sweetener of choice, as desired

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients and cook, uncovered, over medium-high heat for 5-7 minutes. When it starts to bubble, stir occasionally. Sweeten as desired. You can also make this up the night before if you wish.

    My favourite is in your Deep-Dish Cookie Pie! I’m still dreaming about it! 😀 😀 I’ve been trying steel cut oatmeal recently, but it doesn’t quite sit well with my tummy. Normal oatmeal doesn’t either, but steel cut oatmeal causes more tummy discomfort. But when mixed into some baked good, all’s fine and well! Your photography skills are getting better and better! 😀

    I love both steel-cut oats and rolled oats, but I probably eat rolled oats more often because they cook faster:) One of my favorite ways to prepare rolled oats is to cook half a cup of oats with: 1 cup of almond milk and 1 banana mashed with 1 Tbsp of cocoa powder and 1 tsp of cinnamon. Then I swirl in a big spoonful of almond butter and the end and devour:) I also once cooked some oats with pineapple instead of my usual banana, blueberries, or apple, and it was soooo delicious! Who knew that pineapple would be so good in oatmeal?? Shredded pear is also delicious in oatmeal (shredding it helps evenly distribute the sweetness throughout the oatmeal). And in my opinion, no bowl of oatmeal is complete without some nut butter mixed in:)

    My new favorite oatmeal combo: Put 1/2 C old fashioned oats in a bowl. Pour in enough water to cover. Microwave 1 1/2 min. stir in 1 t maple syrup and 1 T coconut cream/milk (from the can). So quick and so delicious!

    I lovee rolled oats. I ALWAYS mix mine with fresh fruit, cinnamon, and ground ginger. Chocolate chips look like an excellent addition! yum!

    Always always: rolled oats, coconut milk, cinnamon, vanilla and a sliced banana cooked on the stove top. Then I swirl in scoop of nut butter. It’s my favorite way to have ’em 🙂 Even better if I have an empty nut butter jar. 😉

    Oh I love oatmeal. So much. Steel cut is amazing, but I find myself eating rolled oats more often because it’s easier. Whenever I come across a new blog, I always checkout the breakfast section to see how many oatmeal recipes they have before I decide if they’re legit;) Also, this looks delicious! I am so eating this for breakfast tomorrow! (or maybe lunch..if I can’t wait:)

    I don’t know if I could narrow it down to my favorite way to eat oatmeal. I love overnight oats (oats, banana, chia seeds, and almond milk mixed and set in the fridge overnight), but I also love just hot oatmeal with flax, walnuts, bananas, and soy milk. Basically anything with oatmeal and bananas is a win for me.

    who doesn’t like banana’s??? thats just… BANANAS. tee hee.
    i could seriously turn into a banana i eat so many of them.

    and i love making chocolate oats. adding some chocolate protein powder always does the trick too. sometimes i go the unhealthy way and add torani sugar free chocolate syrup, but that does have artificial sweeteners in it, so i know some people don’t like to go that route, but it’s pretty tasty so once in awhile i’ll do it. that aspartame hasn’t killed me off yet 😉

    I justtt started liking oatmeal again. I had about a year hiatus because it wouldn’t settle well in my stomach and left me feeling more hungry and jittery. But then I discovered steel cut oats and they work out really well for me! They take longer to make but its worth it for me. I actually made some at night and reheated them in the morning, poured them over some plain kefir in a mason jar and stirred in some butter and maple syrup and had oats on the go as I drove to work.

    Ohh chocolate would be an amazing way to start the day!! And thank you for including a version without banana… I”m one of those crazies who just doesn’t like it, but it’s so big in the blog world! And I like oats all different ways but am especially a fan of steel cut oats!

    I’m a rolled oats girl, lately with some pumpkin, pumpkin pie spice, chia and a drizzle of maple syrup. Autumn in a bowl. Yum.

    It’s always a good day when it starts with chocolate, agreed. My husband loves making chocolate oatmeal too, and his recipe is identical to yours, plus some maple syrup or sugar! We’re rolled oats fans, mostly because we haven’t tried steel-cut oats yet. I’ll occasionally make oat bran for breakfast, or ‘boatmeal’ in whatever flavour combination I’m craving at the moment – yummy! All hail oatmeal!

    I’m very particular about my oatmeal! It has to be SUPER thick. As in I should be able to pick it up with my fingers thick. When I make it overnight I mix everything together and push it off to one side of the bowl so that in the morning I have room for my sides.

    I make a pretty delicious spiced vanilla chai bowl of overnight oats. You combine almond milk, a little chai concentrate, and actual loose-leaf vanilla tea in a bowl and let the oatmeal soak it in overnight! Yum!

    Also, as someone who makes an oatmeal very similar to this, I’d like to suggest adding in unsweetened (or sweetened, if you like that kind of stuff) chocolate almond milk. It takes the chocolate flavors to an even higher level!

    Overnight oats are my fave 🙂

    The pics with the pouring nondairy milk are so cool. Definitely shows motion and leads the eye to that tasty bowl of goodness.

    Some of your readers don’t like bananas? I can’t imagine not liking bananas.

    This is not related to oatmeal, but have you ever posted a recipe for cinammon rolls? And if not, could you at some point?? I know Ikea cinammon rolls are only like a dollar, but I’m guessing they’re cheap money-wise but not at all cheap calorie-wise. Thanks!

    I haven’t been eating a whole lot of oats lately 🙁 But, I love making all different sorts of flavors! I really don’t like eating the same bowl twice! Why should I have to eat the same bowl twice with so many fun add-ins available? Some Favorites: Chocolate banana (Baker’s Chocolate with Slice Bananas), Chocolate Cherry (cocoa with fresh cherries), Tropical (coconut, oranges, peaches), Nutty Apple Spice (walnuts, cinnamon, apple)

    Mmmmm oatmeal+chocolate! Steel cut are my favorite for sure, but sometimes I mix in rolled or oat bran for volume. I’m such a volume eater! And I agree. Impossible not to smile while consuming chocolate.

    My oatmeal taste is pretty plain-I like it with some almond milk and sweetener. Although, I recently tried your recipe with chia seeds and it was goooood! I’m now sold on chia.

    My current favourite is carrot cake porridge at the moment, made by cooking grated carrot for a bit, then adding the (jumbo) oats and some ground mixed spice… so good and even my major sweet tooth doesn’t want any extra sweetener 🙂

    I love making your voluminous oats the night before and then cooking them again on the stove in the morning. I like to add a scoop of vanilla protein powder and then a couple of seasonal toppings. Right now my favorite is a few spoonfuls of pumpkin, raisins, and loads of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice! 🙂

    Ooh yum!!! I actually have oatmeal most mornings. My regular go-to is crumbling walnuts over the top and then dotting a few DARK chocolate chips (very dark; I don’t want to start my morning off with a sugar rush and I cannot handle sugar!). But other fall favourites include a kind of apple compote on my oatmeal and I MUST try some of these pumpkin and sweet potato oatmeal recipes I’ve seen kicking around. Thanks!

    Oh and I usually make my oats half and half with water and milk because I just don’t like runny oats. The milk makes them so creamy too that I don’t need to add much in the way of creamy toppings :). I guess you can tell I think about oats a lot…

    I love adding canned coconut milk or coconut butter to my oats, makes them so rich 🙂 I don’t think I will ever go back to plane oats with water, I love them creamy, and these look fabulous too!

    I must know, do you eat the things you picture… like was that bowl of oats eaten after the pictures were taken? It would be fun to see a breakfast you really do eat not just staged, or along side a staged one, for fun 🙂 I love the shots, really nice!

      It depends! I really (really!) hate wasting food, so I will try to waste as little as possible. Oftentimes that means the food that is used for the photoshoot is actually a BAD trial from the recipe! (i.e. many recipes have more than one trial before they’re perfected… I save the bad trials and use them for photos!)
      Another thing I often do is photograph in miniatures. So if you look reeeeaally closely and pay attention to the silverware I use, you might be surprised to see how TINY some of the foods really are! That way I waste less.
      Unfortunately, especially with pouring shots, by the time you shoot as fast as you can while pouring, you’re left with a soggy mess! Not to mention how you have to poke and prod the food with your fingers. If at all possible, I’ll eat what I’ve used for photos. But really, it’s usually not edible after withstanding all my creative craziness ;).

    I wish I had seen this this morning because I was craving some chocolate oats! I still got my chocolate oats though by stirring in a TJ’s chocolate bar 🙂 I’ll try your version next time! My fave way to eat oats is the chocolate kind I just told you about or topped with Greek yogurt and pb! Oh and steal cut oats will always come in number one though I love rolled oats too 🙂

    I love steel cut oats. I usually make a batch in the slow cooker once or twice a week. My absolute favorite way to have it is with a banana mushed into it and a spoonful of either Mighty Maple or Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter. AMAZING! 🙂

    I need to give steel-cut oats a try again. Over the summer, oatmeal started giving me stomach and digestive problems, so I stopped eating it. I’m pretty sure it’s a gluten sensitivity, but I know it’s not celiac/intolerance because I had the blood test. I tried oatmeal again last week, and it caused problems still, but I’ve heard steel cut oats may be better tolerated. Hopefully!

    my mom makes an amazing oatmeal by mixing oats, rice, quinoa, groats, oat bran, etc. (any mixture) and then adding vanilla, orange, and almond extracts and cooking it overnight. in the morning we add banana or blueberries and cinnamon. we also just discovered how anazing it is to put either fig or peach balsalmic vinegar in the oatmeal (plain or with cinamon) and adding fresh peaches, frozen blueberries, or even figs. its crazy but amazing!!!

    I made a batch of this oatmeal and then did another batch that was almost the same except I used Carob powder in it instead of the cocoa powder. I find it tastes great either way ^_^ ! I also decided to toss in some goji berries once everything was all cooked. Tropical fruits taste so good in recipes whether it be mangoes, pineapple, dragon fruit, or star fuit.
    I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried eating a dragon fruit … they’re fun to eat right out of the skin.

    That looks great and I love the action shot with the milk! Action shots (while still getting a clear image) are so tricky (unless you shoot on a tripod?) b/c trying to balance your DSLR with one hand and take the pic AND pour something = way harder than it looks! How do you do it?

    This looks sooo good! Yum!

    I am obsessed with the following version of oats at the moment: Blend firm silken tofu (mori-nu) with frozen banana and peanut butter….THEN, stir the tofu mixture into chilled oats.

    What I just ate for breakfast this morning -and which was fantastic- was oatmeal with grated apples. I just throw the milk and rolled oats into the pot on the stove, and while they start to heat up, grate half an apple into the pot. The grated apple spreads its juices into the oatmeal, so no additional sweetener necessary. I do shake in some cinnamon at the end though.

    I love making mocha oatmeal: 1/2 cup of oats + 3/4 cup of non-diary milk, + 3/4 cup of water + a tbsp of ground flax + a banana (half sliced in half added on top) + 1 tbsp of cocoa + 1tsp of instant coffee powder. It’s super simple, but awfully delicious, especially with copious nut butter and such on top. Your chocolate oats look good too though, simple and quick (which is essential now that school has started.

        I used 40g of large flake oats, 400 g of water (maybe I should measure not weight the liquid?)and a pinch of salt. I put it all in the microwave for 4.5 min and then let it sit in the microwave for 5 min. I then put the mixutre into the fridge. After a few hours I thougth the oats did not look cooked enough so I microwaved them again until they wre boiling for about 2 min. I put into the fridge over night and in the morning they were quite runny and pretty raw tasting? Maybe they stay quite raw with this method? Do you have a picture of what the oats look like after being refridgerated? I hope I can get this to work cause I am pretty oat obsessed, love them topped with a mashed banana and almond milk and sprinkled with almonds ground together with fennel seed (weird but oh so so good).

    I love my oatmeal warm with cinnamon and some (non dairy or other) milk as a topping, but thanks to your blog I have been experimenting lately ;o)

    Today I had some fluffy oatmeal I discovered by chance – I loved the texture, like mousse mmmmh.
    Last night I mixed 1/2 cup of oatmeal with the same amount of non-dairy milk and added 2T of flax seeds. Plus the obligatory dash of cinnamon and some vanilla. Then I let it soak over night.
    This morning I threw it in my Vitamix, added 1/4 cup more milk, and then some and ended up getting something resembling and oatmeal soup or smoothie.

    Then I put in in the microwave for 1.5 minutes just because I like it warm and it came out as a really fluffy oatmeal mousse. I crumbled some of your flourless chocolate chip cookies (my favorite cookies by far, I could eat a batch by myself, every day!) on top and served it with a little more milk. I’m sure this would be delicious served cold as well!

    Nothing beats chocolate in the morning! NOTHING!
    I usually eat a few pieces with a cup of tea during the morning. Or a piece of raw brownie, that I am hooked on at the moment 🙂
    And oatmeal is gooood! I like it cooked with water, the cooled a little so its not piping hot, and then topped with nutbutters, berries, flax etc..

    I am really looking forward to chocolate oatmeal!!! I got some cocoa nibs at WF yesterday… I think I’ll make it with coconut milk from a can, rolled/steel cut oats(I love both), bluberries, cocoa nibs, and cinnamon!! yummy… might even have to get a bananna for this one 😀

    Hey Katie!

    I found your blog yesterday. My first thought when I saw “the healthy dessert blog” was: Hmm.. Texas.. I guess that means that the recipes have just reduced butter and sugar to make them “healthy” (American desserts are waaaaay too sweet for my taste). But then I looked at the recipes.. and looked for some more.. and some more 🙂 And they’re fabulous! I have already tried this recipe and Cookie Pie and I love them both. Even my extremely critical husband and two brothers enjoyed them 😀
    Next time I’ll add flax seeds and sweeten with honey. Since I’m not vegan I used the regular milk but I guess the taste is the same 🙂

    I wonder if this recipe would work with water if you didn’t have milk on hand–?
    I had a ton of extra pears from an overactive pear tree and made pear sauce (diced pears, cinnamon & spices). This became a tasty way to make oatmeal; just add equal parts pear sauce for amount of liquid (or add extra water if you like your oatmeal voluminous).

    I LOVE oatmeal, and I’m always thinking of ways to make it, ‘unusual’ (I’m thinking of making mint chocolate oatmeal soon).
    I use to hate oatmeal since once, I ate a Peaches ‘n Cream oatmeal from Quaker (before I decided to eat healthy) and I threw up from that. Had a huge stomach ache then I hated it, but now I love it. I eat it for lunch now too.

    I’m pretty much all over the map with how I make my oatmeal. I’ll add whatever fruit, nut butter, spice, or even vegetable that moves me at the moment. I do always make it with some sort of milk (dairy, almond, coconut, etc), and I pretty much always add a splash of vanilla because I’m fancy like that. Otherwise, the sky is the limit!

    Made this for breakfast yesterday with a side of fresh strawberries and blueberries (enjoying them as long as I can until winter comes and I won’t be able to dust up any decent fresh berries!) and I must say it was absolutely yummy. Definitely a breakfast to eat again 🙂

    I eat chocolate oats all the time! But, to make it even quicker, I use a small tbls of honey instead of a banana and just heat it up in the microwave. A quick bowl of chocolatey comfort!

    Looks great, but my fave way of making oatmeal now is by baking it instead of cooking it on the stove. I’ve made a few different versions – one with banana, cocoa, peanut butter and agave and another with banana, apple sauce, dried currants, cocoa, spices and a little agave. I bake them in ramikins, so that everyone gets their own freshly-baked serving rather than having to scoop it out of a larger dish. Yum!

    I love love love rolled oats for breakfast!

    I have 1/2 C rolled oats, some cinnamon, a little brown sugar, cooked with about 1 C water. When the oats are cooked but haven’t quite fully thickened, add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter.

    So, SO good. Just watch the sugar, slighty too much takes away from the peanutty taste and turns it blah.

    I’ve never put a banana in my oatmeal before! Do you just drop it in and it eventually cooks and turns to mush? I don’t really like the texture of bananas, but I don’t mind the taste – for example, I’m fine blending it into smoothies, milkshakes, and popsicles. Would 1/2 a banana be okay?

    I made this for breakfast this morning and I’m not a fan of chocolate cereal at all and I must say this was very good. I halved the banana to cut the carbs and stirred in some Dark Chocolate Dream for extra protein and a bit of stevia to sweeten it. I think I know what I will be eating for a number of breakfasts to come! Thanks for posting it.

    OMG Katie!!! This picture is absolutely gorgeous!! The second I saw it – I HAD to have it!! Unfortunately I am overdo for grocery shopping so I had to figure out a way to make it with what I have on hand… So, I made plain oatmeal, dropped in a broken up square of Ghiradelli bittersweet chocolate, then topped with a dallop of your coconut milk whip cream (made it last night – INSANE delicious!!) I didn’t fully stir it up to blend well, just enough to let the melty chocolate swirl in and left pockets of the yummy coconut deliciousness… HEAVEN in a bowl I tell ya!!!!!! I have been “walking on sunshine” all morning long (eventhough it is raining outside) :0) Thanks for the inspiration!!!

    But, this morning was hands down the best oatmeal EVER.
    1/3 cup oats
    milk to cover the oats
    2T of fresh pumpkin puree
    a small handful of fresh cranberries
    1T (or so) real maple syrup
    Stick it in the microwave for 1 min 30 sec and voila – oatmeal magic!!

    In other news…I also thought I’d share with you the phenomenal oatmeal I just had for dinner…yes, oatmeal for dinner. (the joys of being a single gal lol)

    I don’t have exact measurements since I just eyeball everything, but let’s say:

    1/2 cup of canned pumpkin
    1/2 cup of old fashioned oats
    1/2 cup of dried cranberries
    3/4 cup of CHOCOLATE almond milk
    tsp of maple syrup
    generous sprinkles of cinnamon and nutmeg

    I’m literally trying to lick the bowl clean lmao! This is actually my second dose of oatmeal for the day since I tried out your flourless chocolate chip cookies this afternoon…YUM-OH!

    Thanks for all of the fantastic recipes…they will be especially helpful in my mission to subtly convert my boyfriends and besties to my new vegan lifestyle!

    I like to make my oatmeal by eyeballing it and mixing a large spoonful of Earth Balance Margarine witha a large spoonful of All Fruit strawberry jam, microwaving it til it melts (doesnt take long) and then mixing in rolled oats until it is crumbly but still wet. Salty, sweet, warm, yummy. Mmm….You can also put it in the oven til its crispy and make granola.

    But due to my chocolate addiction this may be my new oatmeal go-to. 😉

I made it this morning for the munchkins and we can’t have oats so I subbed with quinoa flakes, added about 2 TB (for a double batch) of honey and threw some raisins after it cooked and, in the words of my 3 year old, it was DEEEEEEEE-WISHOUS!     I LOVE peanut butter oatmeal! My 2 picky toddlers eat it up too! I just prepare quick cooking oatmeal according to package instructions. For each serving of oatmeal, I add 1 serving of natural peanut putter, add a little splenda & some honey. Sometimes I saute some chopped apples in a little water & cinnamon, and add that to my PB oatmeal. And I always top it off with sugar free fruit preserves, whatever flavor ya like..so tasty!     This was SOOOO good! I added a spoonful of peanut butter and some chocolate chips (like you have pictured) to my bowl and allowed the chips to just sit there and get all melty for a few minutes. It reminded me of eating a chocolate-chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. Although I had the banana in there, I did end up adding a Tbsp. of xylitol for a bit of sweetness and a heaping pinch of salt. I am out of vanilla extract (which is a travesty in my house!!), but I had unsweetened vanilla almond milk which worked perfectly. YummO!

    Mmm, this is so tasty! I did have to add the sugar for extra sweetness though. After cooking, I blended it mostly smooth in the magic bullet, and served with just a tiny splash of milk. It tastes just like eating choc-banana cake batter – and that’s plenty fine with me!

    As I have a gastric band, the one serve of your recipe gives me 3 serves, and you can be sure I will be making this every few days for my breakfast. Tasty, healthy and filling – what more could I ask for?

    On a side note – every time I google for a type of recipe (‘cold oat pudding’ bought me here this time) your blog ends up in the first few results. I love your site, and I’m slowly trying out your recipes 🙂

    This oatmeal is sooooo yummy. I made it this weekend and in doing my calculations was a little surprised at the calorie count (I always forget how high of a calorie fruit bananas are).     My favorite way to eat oatmeal is to combine 1/2 cup of rolled oats, 1 cup of milk, 1 apple peeled and sliced into little cubes, a pinch of cinnamon, a pinch of apple pie spice, and either 1 tbsp of maple syrup or honey. Tastes like apple pie!

    I am confused. What do you do with the banana? Do you mash it up and mix it in completely or just cut it up in chunks so that you are eating pieces of banana? also, not clear on what 1 serving of oats is.     There’s something really nice about old-fashioned oats, cooked on the stovetop with just water and no added salt or sugar. Simple and plain, yet somehow really good.

    I do enjoy trying out new recipes, so if I see an oatmeal recipe that looks interesting I’d try it out (I’ve got my eye on quite a few of yours!), but old-fashioned and plain will always be, in my eyes, the best way to eat oatmeal.

    I just finished eating this delicioussssssssss bowl of oatmeal and WOW!!! 1) I am stuffed!! and 2) It tasted soooooooooooooooo good!

    I cooked it with water instead of skim milk (I’m not a vegan) because last time I cooked oatmeal with milk on the stovetop, I was left with burned milk on the bottom of my saucepan! Does anyone have any tips for preventing scorching on the bottom of the pan?

    I didn’t add the additional sugar – the banana was enough sweetness and left me with a bowl of satisfying, creamy dark chocolate oatmeal!! I cut up the banana into large chunks and partially mashed them while cooking the oatmeal because I didn’t know what you were supposed to do with the oatmeal. But after reading Katie’s comment above, I will mash the banana before cookig the next time I make this. Looking forward to it!!

    Oats are the best! You know, I used to hate eating breakfast because I always felt like there were so few options but now I love oatmeal. I can’t believe I had never tried real rolled oats (not instant) until a year ago. What a difference! I love making different flavors and textures.

    This was delicious, btw. I used a bit less banana because I didn’t want the flavor to be so strong, I used vanilla soy milk and extra water and used your microwaving/volume oatmeal trick. It came out creamy and the perfect sweetness. 🙂

    I like rolled oats, I soak them over-night in water and supposedly it’s better on your digestive system! I know that the texture is much better and I feel full longer.     This oatmeal sounds DELICIOUS! I tried it today with applesauce instead of a banana. It was pretty tasty ( I mean it had chocolate! of course it was!) But thinking about it with banana’s instead made my version seem so weak.

    I LOVE Banana’s please don’t judge me!!! A horrible thing happened and I found out I have a food allergy to banana’s! NOT COOL.

Sadly, I have no pumpkin in the house but I did have everything for this recipe. I grew up hating cooked oatmeal and have never even attempted to make it until today. This was AMAZING! I’m diabetic and the oats are fabulous for diabetics and the sugarfree maple syrup lets me feel like a kid again! BEST breakfast for a fall or winter morning, and easy too!

    I’m one who does not like bananas, per se. But since they’re good for me I eat them anyway and I do like them peripherally (smoothies, banana splits, on my frosted flakes). So I thought I might like them in this since I like chocolate banana or strawberry banana milkshakes, but one whole banana gave this overpowering banana flavor for me. Being a Mexican, I added some cinammon because I adore Mexican hot chocolate. That helped and then I read your note about adding other fruits. I happened to have 7 raspberries left in the fridge, so I added 3 just to try it and it was glorious! So I added the rest and it was so much better. Delightful!! Next time I will try half banana.
    It did make a huge serving. I have the opposite of your metabolism, I need very little fuel to live so I have to exercise more and watch my calories. oh well. Chocolate diet is harmless, eh? 🙂

    Tried this recipe for breakfast this morning, and I gotta say I’m impressed. It tasted great and all the fiber and protein in there made me feel so energetic and full after eating it. 🙂

    My only complaint is I felt the banana kind of overpowered the chocolate flavor (granted, I used a really large banana). I think the next time I try this recipe I’ll try using only half a banana and some other sweetener.

    I love this! But instead of the bannana, I always use a bit of coconut oil. I don`t have enough healthy oils in my diet, so I`m always trying to add them in without a gross fat taste! I think it is slightly sweet, so it works in every way!

    I adore oatmeal, but only really knew one way to prepare it. Very simply with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla & walnuts. I really truly love it, it is so simple & filled with flavors that I love, but it gets boring to eat that every day.
    I recently tried your peanut butter breakfast pudding & I almost cried. It was SO good! And honestly, I was full for hours! But not that sluggish, gross kind of full. Comfortably, protein-filled full. It was wonderful.
    My New Years Resolution (the first in about 6 years) was to start eating healthier & get myself in shape. And I am going to follow a lot of your recipes. I am not vegan & have never had tofu, but some of your pie recipes look so good, I may have to go out & get some. 🙂 I have already added coconut butter to my list. I had never heard of it before, but I can’t wait to get it so I can try some of your other recipes that caught my eye. 🙂

    I used 1/4c. oats, 1/4c oat bran, .5c almond milk + .5c water, half a large banana (sliced), 1.5T cocoa powder, 1/4t vanilla and 1/8t salt.

    Just made this and am eating it right now! It is yummy! Although I haven’t finished it and it seems too sugary for me! [weird enough I did not add any sugar, it’s just from the banana.. then again my taste buds for sugar are very low ..maybe that’s why >< ] Besides this, I like the texture that it ended up having :] Maybe I'll use less banana next time.. a smaller one hahaa or one that's not so ripen? lol idk :p

    Recently, I’ve also been making oatmeal with chocolate, but mine has been more of an imitation mounds bar. It’s delicious, I don’t even add sweetener! Instead I use unsweetened coconut flakes, semisweet chocolate chips, and a bit of milk. Yum.

    I usually have cold overnight oatmeals for breakfast! I prepare them the night before though. I combine plain/chocolate full-cream milk/soy milk (the thicker the better for me!), a serving of dry oats (rolled oats, if there is!), slices of banana and/or slices of apple (opt. cinnamon), and I make sure that the oats are soaked in the milk before leaving them overnight in the fridge. By next morning, I’d have a bowl of creamy chocolate oatmeal with fruits ready for breakfast! 🙂

    I make this chocolate oatmeal without the milk, but add some shredded coconut or sunflower seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon, and it reminds me of no-bake cookies! I’m not hungry for chocolate the rest of the day either. (Good for the diet!)

    I knew I would love this recipe so I doubled it! I used old fashioned oats, fat free milk, and stirred in 1 tbsp. of sugar. I cut the banana into big chunks, and mashed them with a potato masher while the oatmeal cooked. Delicious!!

    Next time I don’t think I’ll add the extra sugar. The sugar in the banana adds the sweetness that I like.

    So I made this this morning but couldn’t taste the chocolate because the banana was really over powering. It also stuck to the bottom of my pan due to having an electric stove. I had to continually stir it in order for it to not stick and it still left a mess. Also how long do you cook it after the 5-7 minutes? I cooked it till it looked ready but…yeah. Is there any way to make this less banana more chocolate? Or should I just follow the non-banana recipe? I like banana just not having it over powered.

    Do you ever mix plain greek yogurt and fruit into oatmeal? It’s like eating pie….well, almost. I do use sweetner but never put milk on top. Am going to try your pumpkin as I love pumpkin pie…..but have to shop for the pumpkin first…LOL

    I just tried making some this morning. I used water to cook the oatmeal in, just to be safe. I’m glad I did, because the oatmeal ended up scorching and sticking to the bottom of the pan! Next time, I’ll cook on medium, instead of medium-high. This was pretty good! I would have liked it to be sweeter, but I am trying to be good so I opted out of adding extra sweetener. Maybe I’ll try a riper banana next time. I added 2 tbsp of whole milk at the very end. I am going to be on a strict diet this month, so I have a feeling I will be making this a lot.     I gave a try adding some chia seeds to a combination of this recipe and the mudslide (didn’t have a banana, but added all ingredients at the get-go and used 1/3 more milk). Woah. It became more like chocolate pudding! SO good. If the oats could be pureed I wonder if….

    Just in case there’s anyone out there who can’t eat oats (gf or otherwise), I’ve made this recipe with brown rice grits an it turns out great. Throw in some PB or nut butter and you’ve got a party! Next up I plan on trying your boatmeal without the oats.

    This is very good with a couple modifications. I found 1.5 tbsp. cocao way too much and will cut by half next time. I also found the salt taste too overpowering and will cut that to a “pinch”. 40 grams is somewhere between 1/8 C. [28 gms] and 1/4 C. [56 gms] so I tried 3 tbsp. vs. 4 tbsp. I had to boil it for 10-12 minutes so will go to 1/4 C. next time.

    I love this chocolate oatmeal but my favorite is a savory oatmeal. I cook in a pan onion, tomatoes and mushrooms with some spices like turmeric, sea salt, and cumin then add cooked oatmeal and finish with cilantro. Delicious!

    Love your blog! I was searching for the black bean brownie recipe and found yours. Looks great. I started looking and decided I need to try a lot of these recipes! All these oatmeal recipes caught my eye right away.

    BTW, my favorite oatmeal is quick steel-cut oats with sugar free orange marmalade (about a tablespoon) with sliced bananas on top. I also like to use strawberry jam (sugar free) with sliced strawberries on top. I make a big pot of oatmeal each week, then heat a small bowl of it in the microwave each morning. I add my jams and fruit then. Yum!

    I have never liked an oatmeal recipe until your Chocolate Oatmeal came to me! I have tried many versions of oatmeal and usually get turned off by the texture. Being a chocolate lover, i was excited to try this recipe. Because of the texture aversion, i used a little less milk, maybe 1/2 C instead of 3/4 C and added some Peanut Butter powder.     So I didn’t think that I would like this oatmeal because I’m a bit picky with oatmeal because 1) breakfast is my favourite meal and it needs to be good to keep me from snacking non stop. 2) so many recipes for oatmeal have way too much sugar that it hurts so I usually just snatch the just of the recipe and make it my own. 3) I once tried chocolate oatmeal and even though I loooovvee them separately when I combined them before it just didn’t work.
    But, that being said, I loved having this for breakfast this morning. I used coconut milk because I make my own oat milk and rice milk and I ran out and was too lazy to make more last night. Also didn’t add any sweetener as the banana was enough (refer to point 2). And I added some home made peanut butter in my bowl. Oh and a few extra pinches of salt. Yummmyyyy! Thank you so much for the recipe. I almost always have banana so I can make this often. Like many of your recipes, this one was a success.

    So…six years after you listed this, I found it and tried it. WOW, is all I can say. Totally yummy way to start the day. I did do it a little differently but it is essentially the same. I used Bob’s Red Mill quick cooking oats and added the ingredients after it was cooked. You use water for Bob’s oatmeal so I just added a half cup or so of milk after it cooked. I also used Hershey’s Special Dark Cocoa and it was amazing! Thanks, Kate! Two thumbs up!

    I put all these ingredients in a blender, added some ice, and made it into a smoothie bowl. The only used 1/2 tbs cocoa powder since the oatmeal wasn’t going to expand and soak it up. It turned out delicious! Thank you for the recipe

    my favorite oatmeal recipe is so close to this they’re like cousins. I don’t have a microwave, so I steep my oatmeal. A cup of rolled oats in a ceramic bowl with a cup of boiling water and cover with a ceramic saucer for five minutes. Then I add 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar , Some brown sugar, milk and butter and I’m happy happy. It taste like a caramel apple. But if I add cocoa while I am steeping my oatmeal I’ll bet it will taste like a chocolate covered Apple. I don’t have any cocoa powder on hand so I think I’ll try an envelope of Swiss Miss hot chocolate mix! Thank you for the wonderful recipes

    You didn’t mention what to do with the banana (just mush it up while it’s cooking?) but since my daughter and I don’t like “chunks” of banana in our oatmeal, I blended all of the ingredients, except for the oats, in the blender first then put the blended liquid onto the stove to cook with the oats. For the milk, I used half canned coconut milk and half water. I added chopped walnuts on top of mine. Delish!

    I do this completely different and its SO much easier! I use cocoa pebbles, they’re basically oats and already chocolaty. I put some cocoa pebbles in a bowl with VERY LITTLE milk, like a bit less than a normal bowl of cereal. I microwave it for 2:30 mins and mix it. Then I add in more cocoa pebbles so that it isn’t all soggy and has texture. Put enough to make another small bowl of cereal. Then stir it up till it thickens. It’s basically cereal but with a whole new look and texture! (Beware of how hard it is to scrub off a bowl once it dries!)

    Super tasty, easy and healthy. I like to skip the sweetener and add some peanut butter and/or berries on top. However, one serving in gigantic and I struggled to finish it, so I’ve halved the recipe.
