If desired, try topping the homemade chocolate mousse with Coconut Whipped Cream or this Keto Ice Cream.

I sent the recipe to a friend who’s following a keto diet, and she texted me to say that her non-keto family loved the chocolate mousse so much that she barely even got a serving for herself.

If you’re vegan like I am, the dessert is naturally egg free and can easily be made dairy free by using coconut milk or coconut cream. Feel free to use regular sugar or your favorite sweetener of choice if you’re not on a low carb or sugar free diet.

How to make keto mousse

Start by gathering all of your ingredients. Chill the coconut milk or heavy cream and the actual mixing bowl, then whip the liquid with hand beaters until it thickens and stiff peaks form.

Whip in the cocoa powder and sweetener of choice. For the richest flavor, I recommend including the dutch cocoa if you can find it. Once a mousse texture is achieved, serve and enjoy.

Cover any leftovers, and store in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Egg Free Sugar Free Chocolate Mousse

The recipe was adapted from my Vegan Chocolate Mousse and from this 3 ingredient Peanut Butter Mousse.

  • 1/4 cup sweetener of choice (I used this monk fruit blend)
  • optional 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • optional 1/4 tsp instant coffee

Instructions

Coconut milk or cream, cocoa powder, sweetener. That does look like three to me. I don’t think she’s counting the optional ones because they aren’t required.

    • ssk says

Right. She’s using two kinds of cocoa powder, which are separate items, so that is four items, without the optional ingredients. From what I’m seeing lately, it appears that she might be switching from vegan to vegetarian. She also describes some recipes as being sugar free when they have sugars in them; for instance dates, maple syrup, and others. I think she means “refined” sugar free, but that is not what she says. And she says that a lot of recipes are healthy that are not actually healthy. Some of them might be healthier than traditional recipes, but they are not all that healthy.

      • CCK Media Team says

The dutch cocoa is not required, as it says in the recipe, so as Hannah says, it can be three ingredients. I’m unclear as to which recipe you are referring to that is mislabeled as sugar-free; we don’t think that we have ever done such a thing and would love to know what recipes you are looking at so that we can look at them too.

She is providing information to help people. Those being critical need to just move on and find something that better suits them. Be polite, take a good look in the mirror and find something better to do. Those of us that appreciate the information say Thank You!

Exactly what I was thinking. If you can only say negative things, just don’t say anything. Its hard enough to stay on track. Dont need those negative comments here. Thank you

Some people just like to nitpick, nothing better to do. Got to feel sorry for them if that is all they have in their lives.

      • Cl0wd9 says

Why do people always want to argue over the stupid things. Congratulations on your math but I think the point is more that it is a simple recipe than a math issue

    Hi Katie,

Do you think that this recipe could be made and then frozen? I’m the only keto person in my household, and I’d really like to have a dessert ready to grab from the freezer when the craving strikes!

    Thank you!

    • CW says

I freeze this in individual containers. You can let it defrost fully in the refrigerator or I let it sit on the counter for about 10 minutes. It’s a little like ice cream when it’s partially frozen.

This recipe seems pretty much identical to the Keto Frosty! I would you could just stick some of it in the freezer for about 45 minutes and have it like a frosty (yum!), then freeze the rest and eat it later.

  3. Lauren says

This recipe is a keeper! I’m not a fan of keto desserts normally but there is someone on low carb in my family so I made it for him expecting to not have any for myself. Well the joke was on me because I didn’t want to share!

  4. Andy says

What is the actual yield of this recipe? It says it makes 1 1/4 cups, yet is starts with 1 1/2 cups cream and 1/4 cup sweetener plus chocolate. That’s almost 2 cups before whiipping. Thanks.

Ladies, I hope you accept comment from a grand-pa, and Katie I’m an expert on choco
mouse. YOUR’s is 10 points, A+. Hats off.
I tried other stuff as the cookies (I must work on this) the chiaeggs (excellent) etc.
Keto has helped me and Kate made it fun.
    Guys try it !!

  6. Anne says

If you whip heavy cream until peaks form and THEN add the cocoa powder you run the risk of making it as thick as butter and very unpleasant texture. They should be whipped together.

  7. Shannon says

Just made this and it is delicious! I mixed the heavy cream + unsweetened Cocoa powder + high quality hot cocoa powder + Monk fruit sugar in a bowl until peaks formed. Then added the salt + vanilla + espresso powder. Great consistency and taste. Wouldn’t know it was low sugar. Thanks for the recipe! Can’t wait to try others!

  8. Erin says

I forgot to add the salt but it was still absolutely delicious! I made it with whipping cream, the optional 1/4 tsp of vanilla, and a small handful of Lily’s chocolate chips. Yum!! 😋

  9. Shana says

This was fabulous….the only issue I had was probably the sweetener I used. I used a monkfruit sweetener, and the mousse was a bit grainy at then (did NOT stop us from gobbling it up!) Has anyone tried adding the sweetener a bit sooner to help with that? Or are yall using ‘powdered’ sweetener?

  10. Kathi says

I am going to make this chocolarw mousse as an icing for the vegan keto cupcakes. For that I will get Monk Fruit Sweetener. Can I use that instead of the Erythritol or is it better to use the Monk Fruit Sweetener?

    • Kathi says

Also, I am worried that I will not have enough of the top part from my coconut milk can – do I need to cool it to make sure I will have enough? Should I get two cans to be safe?

      • CCK Media Team says

Hi, you can definitely get two cans to be safe. Monk fruit blend (like Lakanto) is fine to use. Pure monk fruit (where it is the only ingredient) is apparently somewhat bitter.

I sent the ingredients for the Keto Chocolate Mousse to my sister. She followed the instructions for the coconut milk…

This was beyond heavenly. I added orange extract to it! Next will be banana extract, almond extract or mint extract.
      So many options!
Thank you for the great recipe❤️

Hi! Full nutrition facts are linked at the bottom of the recipe box under the ingredients/instructions 🙂

Can I use liquid monk fruit extract instead of powder? I cannot use erythritol due to its source. Really wanting to make this!

Made this today and oh my stars, it won’t be the last time. I used only Hershey’s Cocoa powder because it is what I had. Included the vanilla and instant coffee and threw some walnuts on top. Amazing! Thanks so much. Can’t wait to explore your other recipes.

    • CCK Media Team says

Still one can. There will be a little more cream in a can of cream than in a can of coconut milk, but both amounts work just fine here 🙂

So easy so delicious! Such a nice keto treat. I used Swerve the granulated brown, on accident but it was amazing! This will be a regular treat in our home forever. So glad I found this.

Just made this. It’s delicious. I used Alloulose sweetener & coconut cream. I couldn’t get mousse texture, maybe because I only hand a stick blender. Still good. Thank you. 😃

If I make the mousse ahead of time (the night before serving), should I store it in the serving dishes, or in the mixing bowl? Wondering if it will change the consistency. Thanks!

I absolutly loved it just the way it was ! But I also made another version and added dark choclate collegen and a teaspoon of powder esspresso and it was equally delish! glad I found and made it and it was so so easy!

Delicious! I have made this multiple times with heavy cream (have not tried it with coconut milk). I double the recipe and make some whipped cream topping. I freeze half in small containers for ice cream and it’s perfect! If I am feeling fancy, I top with dark chocolate shavings. I do add a dash of salt.
I will also advocate to use a combination of sugar substitutes. If you only use one kind, I think the aftertaste is noticeable.

This was amazing! I blended in a piece of Ghirardelli 86% cacao intense dark chocolate, talk about decadent and rich! My husband loved this also. I can definitely see this used on a layered dessert or as a topping.

  23. Lisa says

If you, like me, are using coconut milk & accidentally don’t read the part about only using the top portion (or don’t know what that means bc 90% of the can is liquid & am I really wasting all that?!) …. just know that you can throw this in an ice cream maker and get ice cream as well LOL… sorry, Katie.

This is a wonderful treat! I made this for the first time using Stevia and liked it. The next time I used allulose and it made it so much better. It didn’t have the aftertaste of the Stevia. I have even froze the leftovers and it makes a very tasty ice cream!!! ❤️🔥

This chocolate mousse is delish! I used the coconut cream, Lakanto and added a scoop of chocolate collagen powder along with the vanilla. Slivered almonds on top! Even my husband liked it. Win win!

This is super easy to make (especially since I had all the ingredients), and it was a big hit. My aunt, who is a chocoholic, was diagnosed with diabetes 2 months ago. I’m looking for recipes that will keep her both satisfied AND stick to her diet. Since I had tried the black bean brownies and the blondies made with garbanzo beans years ago (and fooled multiple people with them), I came back to the site. She liked the keto brownies I made a couple of eggs l weeks ago, but not some recipes I found elsewhere. I don’t think this will last long.

Hey, I’m aiming to make this for my Dad using erythritol (he’s type 2 diabetic), and after a bit of looking I can see that you can buy granulated or powdered versions of this. Would either of these work or would you recommend one over the other?

  28. Jennifer Forman says

Super easy to make and really good! I did not add anything other than the 3 ingredients and I thought it came out perfect! Really great treat if you are looking for a quick healthy sweet something!
    Loved it! Thank you!
