Seriously though, how fun are these homemade emoji cookies?
What’s your favorite emoji?
I am a girl of many emotions.
We’ve talked before about my over-expressive face problems.
And in text messaging, where one’s countenance is hidden from view, I very much appreciate the vast array of emoticons Apple offers as a replacement. This absolutely does not mean I wish for emoji to take over the world and replace words altogether. A self-professed logophile (lover of words), I enjoy choosing exactly the right word to convey my thoughts… and then I equally enjoy choosing exactly the right emoticon to convey my corresponding facial expression. They say that 93% of communication is nonverbal.
Emoji help bridge the gap in electronic speech.
But today I am not talking about electronic speech. Instead, I am talking about sugar cookies.
This post is dedicated to one of my favorite friends.
Really, he was my sister’s friend first. But I stole him… which gives you a pretty good clue about my favorite emoji.
Hint: it’s purple.
While the upside-down smiley face does hold a piece of my heart, it’s undisputedly the devil emoji I use most often in text message conversations. (Not sure what this says about me…)
One day a few months ago, I arrived home to find a box outside my door. Instantly curious about the unexpected delivery, I tore into the box to reveal its contents.
Inside, I found a devil emoji pillow, and no note.
But I knew right away who’d sent it. My sister chooses good friends.
How To Make Emoji Cookies:
Step One:
Make up a batch of sugar cookies, using any recipe you wish. I used my recipe for Healthy Sugar Cookies.
(If you’d prefer, you can make an emoji cake instead of cookies!)
Step Two:
Make a batch of frosting, or use store-bought or even melted coconut butter. (Many mainstream frostings—such as certain flavors of Pillsbury, Dunkin Hines, and Betty Crocker—are shockingly vegan. Not saying they are healthy, but figured I’d mention they are at least vegan.)
If you want a quick and easy buttercream frosting recipe that will work for these sugar cookies, you can whip up a batch of the following:
- 1 cup powdered sugar or sugar-free powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp butter spread, such as vegan Earth Balance
- 1 tbsp milk of choice
- 1/4 tsp pure vanilla extract
Sift powdered sugar to ensure no lumps. Whip everything together, preferably with beaters, although a fork will also work. If a thinner frosting is desired, thin it out with a little extra milk of choice.
Step Three:
Color your frosting to match whatever emoji you want to make.
For yellow: stir in either yellow food coloring or use 1/4 tsp powdered turmeric to every 1/2 cup frosting – That’s actually the natural turmeric frosting in the photos. Isn’t it fantastic?!
For purple: either use purple food coloring or pulverize freeze-dried blueberries in a blender, then stir some of the resulting powder into your white frosting.
For red: either use red food coloring or stir a little beet juice or beet powder into white frosting. You can stir in a little acai powder for a nice pink hue. Can you tell I’ve kind of been having fun experimenting with natural food colorings?
Then add chocolate chip eyes and carefully draw faces with melted chocolate, either using a spoon or piping the melted chocolate through a bag with a tiny hole cut off one corner.
So, basically now you can use emoji in real-life conversations. (I think Taco, of The League, would be a fan of these emoticon cookies.) They taste delicious, and—unlike making actual facial expressions—will not cause wrinkles. All good things for overly expressive people like me. I just have to work on not eating all the emoji cookies before I can use them for self-expression.

Does the turmeric leave an off-taste? Love the idea.

If you use the frosting recipe in the post (or store-bought) and stick to the ratio listed, you can’t taste it at all. You would start to taste it if you add a bit more, but with the amount listed you should be safe.
