So a guy walks into a bar

Mountain Mint Wild Bars

Mountain Mint Wild Bars and I first crossed paths a few months ago in New York City.  But part of me wishes we’d never met.  Is this because Wild Bars don’t taste good?  Heck no!  It’s because they taste so incredibly over-the-moon, turn-your-world-upside-down delicious that my poor wallet is having apoplexy trying to figure out how to support this new addiction.  Wild Bars, you see, are $5 each!  (Foolishly, I neglected to look at the price when I purchased my first bar.) Is there a certain product that—due to its high cost—you wish you’d never discovered?

I can think of quite a few… like Chocolate Coconut Butter!

Back to the story:  Just one unassuming green package combines velvety, bitter chocolate, intense, cooling mint and rich, chewy macadamia nuts for a truly-tantalizing flavor explosion.  They’re heaven if you’re a hard-core chocolate or mint lover.  (I happen to be one of both.)  And if you heat them up in the microwave for a few seconds?  There are no words.

All that flavor and a healthy dose of fiber (14g per bar), Omega 3s, vitamins such as B12 and Phosphorous, and antioxidants—it’d be pretty darn perfect, if one could only solve the nagging problem of that high price.  Apparently, the bars are so expensive thanks to one of their ingredients: blue green algae.  Wha???  Are you kidding me? Algae, as in the algae that grows at the bottom of my pool??? (CCK’s mind is going a hundred miles a minute right now, trying to figure out how she can market the crap in her pool…)

If you’re Donald Trump and you are reading this post, go out right now and buy caseloads of these bars. (And send some to me, please!).  Otherwise, stay far, far away so as not to get addicted to the wildly-delicious, wildly-pricy Mountain Mint Wild Bars.  (I wasn’t keen on the orange-flavored bars, hence their absence from this post.)  To the chagrin of my tummy and delight of my aforementioned wallet, I can’t find Wild Bars in Texas.  But you can bet your (tempeh) bacon that I stock up every time I go to NYC.  *Sigh* What else is a chocolate-addicted girl to do?

To summarize: If money is no object, get thee to a grocery store to buy up some Wild Bars! And please don’t forget your favorite chocoholic, whose birthday is September 6th. 😉

I’m working on homemade Wild bars, based on this recipe: 3 Ingredient Chocolate Bars.

I’ve never seen those bars before but you make them sound so amazing! I’m still looking for the new Larabar flavors too, so I have quite a few things to try 🙂

  2. brandi says

i would definitely buy you some bars, but I can’t find them here! maybe a good thing since I have a feeling I would love that mint one, too.

  3. Lainie says

Love those bars – they’re great! There are SO MANY products I wish I’d never discovered due to their cost….upscale brands of natural nut butters, all-things organic, larabars, etc. It’s not that any of these things are crazy expensive on their own…it’s just that when you add them to a weekly grocery bill, it jumps by a scary amount.

    Cute pictures of you!

  4. buffmuffy says

Um yeah. Mountain Mint wildbars are not only deliciously amazing but they give so much energy and zest to life!! My god, I don’t think I can ever buy any and this makes me sad.
I’m also a dark choco mint lover myself. Dream and heaven.
Also the artisana products… coconut butter… lol.
LOVE your pics. so freaking cute lol. you have such tiny arms! And are so gorgeous! Girl, I am all around jealous lol 🙂
Bars really are the perfect college treat.

hahaha love your humor 😉 i will keep my eye out for those wild bars!! i agree though that the price is a deterrent but sometimes i’ll sneak a few in my mom’s shopping cart when she’s not looking haha. bbut when i’m at college all we have are the odwalla bars and cliff for sale on the mealplan 🙁 you have such pretty eyes by the way!!

  6. Damjana says

I checked the site and I see there are just the best and most excellent ingredients (in my opinion) in it. No wonder they taste so delicious and they can’t be cheap because of the ingredients. But you might get some free samples for a review, that would be awsome!

  7. JB says

i love that mountain mint bar! i did the exact same thing as you when i bought my first one. i didn’t realize that it was five dollars! well, that one was also my last one. haha. so unfortunately they are not staples in my diet. i might buy one again sometime (i want to try the other flavor!) but for now i’m sticking to laras!

I love most bars – especially Luna and Z bars – the cheaper option than Larabars or Pure bars although less healthy. They’re all expensive though. I really liked Pro bars, but they’re really expensive.

  9. Maria says

Hehe, your birthday is just 2 days before mine. We are almost birthday twins 😀 Are you turning 22? If you are, then we were born nearly at the same time, hehe. I get over zealous on these sort of things–I’m a kid at heart.

I heard some great things from HEABs on those bars too, and your [extremely cute] review just makes me want to spend that $5. The black and white photo really does highlight the bar. So cool!

  10. Brandi (#2 I guess!) says

Hmm very interesting. I will have to try this. I got a dark chocolate/mint bar from Spiral Diner the last time I was there and it was so good. I prefer dark chocolate too. And funny enough my birthday is September 8th! Go go Virgos.. 🙂

  11. fadingcloser says

ive been wanting to try those bars SOO bad!!
i’ll have to pick at least ONE up next time im in ny…$5 is craaazy though! especially since i got an awesome 10 for $10 deal on lunas today! 🙂
yay for being a virgo! my bday is coming up too..in fact..2 weeks from RIGHT NOW! 🙂 yay birthdays!!

  12. Allie Katie says

Damn, homie those sound delicious!!! Also, I know I told you about the Touch of Sea Salt Lindt bars the other day-I just checked and sadly (for you and cows everywhere) they have milk in them. However, if there is ever a day that for one single second you think ‘screw the animals I am eating dairy’ (which I doubt :)) I beg you, make it this chocolate bar.
    xoxo!

  13. Christina says

Luckily, I haven’t yet found a chocolate nutrition bar I like so I’m not dying to try these. I do love vitatops and brownies though but they’re too expensive for me 🙁 And of course random nut butters like walnut and macadamia!

  14. randomlymikey says

i have never seen one before but you now you have me wondering. can a bar really be good enough to spend 5 bucks on? that’s 5 luna bars. lol. i love you pix with it 🙂

  15. Jules says

I can completely understand the whole wishing-you-never-found something. Once my brother discovered Whole Food’s General Tso’s vegan chicken…it’s probably the best vegan imitation meat I have ever had, combined with the most delicious sauce ever…but it’s $10 a pound. Luckily my brother also found vegan “chicken” lo mein at Whole Foods, which is in the hot foods bar and is much cheaper but equally delicious 🙂

  16. broccolihut says

Ah yes, I have far too many foods that cost far too much–I totally agree on the Artisana nut butters! Another one is Sunshine burgers.
Wild Bars sound fantastic…not sure if I should even try them for fear of getting hooked on another high price item!

  17. Damjana says

Hehe, you’re way too cute about ‘marketing those algae in your pool’…that makes me smile!
I’m trying to find some dark chocolate or chocolate bars which are made in my country and are vegan..I’d like to find some and send them over to you

  18. Jenna says

Oh my goodness, I’m addicted to those bars too! My local, tiny little natural market carries them in small amounts (probably a good thing, or I’d buy many more), and I thought I was the only one who thought they were ridiculously priced! I made the same mistake that you did – bought one without looking at the tag. Maybe I’ll just stick to the chocolate brownie Clif Z-Bars…my bank account will like me more.

  19. wholefoodlover says

    I don’t know.
1 beer at a bar in NYC or LA is like $6 for something moderately good.
Coffee is between $3.50 and $4.95

Those ingredients aren’t cheap. Other bars that use similar ingredients seem to be between $6 -$10. Wild blue green algae is worth $1.50 of that price in that serving size. I guess it’s how you look at it and what seems valuable. These bars saved me on a number of air and road trips where it’s hard to find good food.

  20. Ruby red vegan says

Oh no now, don’t tell me they are addictingly good! I have yet to get my hands on one, but when I do…my wallet will stand no chance… Where are you, Wild Bar Fairy? Please come slip some Wild Bars under me & Katie’s pillows!!

  21. GC says

I love Maranatha’s nut butters, but they’re just so darn pricey! 🙁
I’ve been eating Larabars for a while, but I can never seem to find any jocolat bars! Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough? Haha, but anyways, those Wild Bars sound delicious!

  22. ttfn300 says

wow, that is expensive… i feel like alot of the things i have tried recently are pricier, so now i need to work on my will power and get in the kitchen 🙂

  23. Amanda says

I’m still so stuck on this Katie (aka finding a new bar now that our fav is being discontinued)! I haven’t seen this particular bar yet but hoping to try it soon. I’m wondering if we just need to make our own bars!!

  24. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) says

Ok, how creepy is it that I happened to read this post while eating my very first Mountain Mint Wild Bar?! LOL

Yeah, love at first bite. SO good. And SO not ok that they cost $5 a pop! ARGH! I liked the other flavor I saw (some spicey flavor), but you’re right, the mint takes the cake. NOM NOM NOM!

  25. CoconutGal says

Katie, so random!! I just saw these in a specialty shop this morning and remembered seeing them in the blog world somewhere… I think Veggiegirl and Heather’s.. I excitedly scooped one up but then was like whoa!! $5 dollars! and put it back. Now I am tempted to go back because of how delicious you think they are…. but I am afraid for my wallet. Will I be able to try it just once or will I dream about them from there on after??!
Have you found the new Larabar flavors yet? We found them last week and I must say (out of the 2 I can eat) the chocolate one is by FAR the best. I think it is my favorite out of all the Jocolate series as well… probably because it has coconut in it. Duh. 🙂

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says

Umm you musta been reading my mind…an HOUR ago I just put an order in for some natural food stuff products and kitchen tools and just got dehydrator sheets and some lucama powder. I saw these, almost bought them, but at 4.95 each, I couldnt hang. So….then I come here, and you’re givin’ em away. I love you! Thanks for running the giveaway, I know they can blow up your inbox quickly 🙂

  27. Mandie says

I can’t believe this bars! They look so delicious and the nutrition content is blowing me away (I wish it would blow me all the way to the nearest place to buy them because I’m tooooootally craving some, thanks to you.) Where can I get these little powerhouses? Whole foods maybe?
Thank you thank you thank you for introducing me to these. I looove your blog.

  28. Tiffany S. says

Yeah, $5 is redick! I’m not a big fan of mint unless it’s A mint (like those mini Altoids) or mint-chip ice cream. Other than that – yuck. Same with orange. I’ll eat an orange but hate anything orange flavor – eeewwwy.

But I guess if people weren’t paying the $5 then they would lower the price, right? I’m no Economics major but I am getting better at it!

  29. Ariela says

Hmm I’d love to try some wild bars…but until then my favorite bar has got to be the Amazing Grass green superfoods bar. I know a lot of people shun it because of its green green green flava, but apparently I’m a fan of eating grass and dirt? (yikes)

Thanks for the chance to win!

  30. Gina G says

i would be overjoyed to win these bars! my favorite bar as of right now 😉 would have to be the Jocolat Chocolate Coffee, thankyou so much Katie!

  31. A says

i like the chocolate walnut nectar bars and the mint wildbars (which i can’t get too often because of the price) thank you so much for this chance to win 🙂

  32. Kelly Michelle says

I usually eat cashew Larabars or the coconut cream pie ones. I love chocolate but not really in the Larabars to I need to try these Wild Bars, you convinced me!

  33. Rachel says

Oooohh those look good, but not the price, especially for a college kid like me dropping loads of cash on textbooks.

Larabars are probably my favorite because I can actually pronounce the ingredients. Coconut cream pie and apple pie might be my favorite flavors although I’m a big fan of the Jocolat ones (MINT!!).

I also love Clif Bars, the ZKids ones are awesome hahah. The Nectar ones are great too, bummer they’re being discontinued.

    RIP Clif Nectar bars 🙁

  34. junghwa says

my favorite bar would be the bars that are in the playground! those monkey bars are so fun to play on! hahahah
i am just kidding. i mean i do love them and the YUMMY edible bars too.
i love apple pie lara or blueb pure bars! or lydia crunch raw choc bars. MMMM!

  35. Vanilla says

    5$ for ONE bar??????!!!!

My mom will kill me if I dare to ask her to buy a bar that’s more than 1.50$…and that’s in canadian dollar.

So glad you have that giveaway up…You’ll make one foodie’s wallet happy 🙂

  36. Teresa says

I’ve never tried Wild Bars, but I would love love love to win some! I’d have to say that my favorite bar would be Lara Bars, and my favorite flavor is either the cherry pie or the key lime pie. YUM, YUM!

  37. Laura E says

Thanks so much for the opportunity! My favorite bar would also be the PB&J Larabar! The Cashew Cookie flavor comes in at a close second though!

  38. CaitlinRose says

my favorite bar of the moment is kind of obscure. . . the brand is chocolite, and the flavor is chocolate turtle. it’s delicious, full of protein, and 115 calories!

  39. amyjogo says

Coconut Cream Pie Larabar is my favorite so far. I had a chai tea bar a while back but cannot remember who made it. 🙁

  40. Melissa says

I love that the bars have blue green algae in them- but I never buy them because of the price. Right now I am making my own date/hemp seed bars!

  41. Kelsey says

i love the odwalla superfood bar. it’s green and tastes like those packaged oatmeal sandwich cookies i loved when i was young and had no clue how much ick ingredients they have ;]

  42. Jen says

Well, I’m guessing that I’m embarassing myself, but I eat Cliff chocolate chip bars, as it’s the only bar I can find locally that’s safe for my nursing toddler with food allergies. I’m sure that I could make my own with less ingredients!

  43. Gaby says

Hmm I love the lara cocoa mole or coconut cream pie, and Luna white chocolate macadamia or dulce de leche are sooo good though a bit more processed than wild bars or laras. These wild bars sound amazing, I’ve been making peppermint hot chocolates every time the temperature dips below 50!

  44. Brittany says

I’ve never seen these bars before. I love Mint Chocolate so I think I might like these. Although, definitely not the price tag- $5 for a bar is simply outrageous!

  45. jcd says

Since I have never seen Wild Bars before, yet alone tasted one, and never bought a Larabar either, I couldn’t tell you what my favourite would be. Anything that resembles your Fudge Babies recipe would win me over. Until then, I’m going home and making more fudge babies today. Mmmm… this time with dried cranberries and coconut chunks.

  46. Gannon says

my favorite is the mint kind, it’s so delicious!!! my mom splurged and bought me one for my birthday this past summer, but they’re so expensive i can’t afford any more. i keep thinking and dreaming about them , though!!

  47. Sarah A says

I’ve never been able to get them. Our closest Whole Foods is over an hour away not to mention they’re a little (ok a LOT) above my weekly food budget unless I only want to eat 4 Wild Bars for the week : ) Instead, I have Larabars (cinnamon roll and choc coffee are my favorites) and homemade fudge babies to deliciously keep me company.

  48. Lindsey says

I have a few favorite bars. Each I desire more at different times. I’ll usually go between Clif bars and Larabars these days, but Odwalla bars like to sneak in often too. It’s hard to say my favorite flavor… I love the PB&J Laras and White Chocolate Macadamia Clif bars, but it really depends on my mood.

  49. Steph says

Cashew cookie Larabars! Yummm! I absolutely love chocolate + mint so I have no doubt that I would greatly enjoy these bars!

  50. stephanie says

oh, sorry I meant to say wild bar mountin mint are theeee BEST. i snaged a bite of my friends and i think i obsessed. I gotta eat again

  51. Emily N says

I don’t really have a favorite bar. I like variety so I alternate between many different kinds. I am partial to the chocolate chip Clif Z-Bars though.

  52. Christian Bates says

    Hey Chocolate-Covered Katie,

This is Christian Bates, co-creator and formulator of the WildBar with Ancient Sun. Excellent post and thank you for the rave review! May your success afford your the biggest truck load of cacao ever delivered!

    -CB 🙂

  53. Sallie says

My favorite bars (at the moment) are Kind Fruit and Nut bars (also too expensive so I just get them as a special treat). Also good are Chocolate Brownie Zbars and Kashi Cherry Dark Chocolate, for a quick pick-me-up.

  54. maren says

hmm that’s tricky! ive always loved the gnu foods banana walnut and cinnamon raisin.. also holiday seasonal bars are delish (clif pumpkin/gingerbread)

  55. Nagore says

    Hi!!

I dont live in USA and maybe thats why i cant find in my country all those bars i read about in your blog. Anyways, my favourite ones are “Marie Lu bars”, apple& cinnamon flavour.

I would loooove to try new bars … 😉

    happy new year!

  56. Linda says

I like Lara bars and bumblebars and my own raw bars ( I make one called lemonysnickett that’s really really good. I would love to try your mint bar. Mint is my irrestible temptation.

  57. Miranda says

Mint honey patties by Heavenly Organics. 3 ingredients: honey, peppermint extract, and cocoa. DIVINE! Sold at my local health food store for $0.50/patty…. doesn’t sound like much but then my hubby wants one and so do my kids….. and then I want another….
