Barney Butter and Brownie Batter

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on February 2, 2009

A big, chocolate-covered “thank you” goes out to Jennifer of the Barney Butter Company for sending me a yummy free sample of Barney Butter so that I could see (and taste!) for myself what all the fuss is about. My verdict? I like this stuff!  But then again, I’m not exactly picky when it comes to nut butters– I love ‘em all. The Barney Butter has a taste similar to almond butter (well duh! It is almond butter!), but its texture is smooth and creamy, kinda like Skippy peanut butter (from what I remember; I haven’t eaten Skippy in years and years).I first tried it plain, straight-up, which is my all-time fave way to eat nut butters. But I decided that I like Barney Butter better (say that three times fast) on sandwiches.

Now it’s time for a confession– and it’s hard to believe I’ve blogged this long without spilling my secret! Call me un-American, but I don’t like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches… mainly because I don’t really like jelly.

I opted to try the Barney Butter as a component to my second-favorite nut-butter combo (Sandwich of Dreams being first, of course). Second favorite? Peanut butter and Apple! (Or applesauce, in this case) I simply spread one half of an Ezekiel pita with applesauce and the other half with Barney Butter. Slap it on a plate, throw together a huge salad, and call it lunch!

A quick lunch munch: the sandwich, a mondo kale-and-mix-green salad, and peach salsa

Chocolate-Covered Meal of the Day
Brekkie (nope, not second brekkie; this was eaten on a day off from running, meaning I didn’t channel my inner hobbit)

My first try of Barney Butter. And what’s that chocolatey-lookin‘ stuff? That, my dear friends, is Brownie Batter Hot Cereal. To all you oatmeal haters: I doubt even you could maintain your oat-hatin‘ ways if your hot cereal tasted like brownie batter!

In the bowl: I cooked 1 serving of those awesome kamut flakes (you can easily sub oatmeal) with water and a pinch of salt.  Later, I mixed it with about a T of Extra Dark cocoa powder, some non-dairy milk, a piece of frozen banana (I used the Melted Banana Trick), and a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

I cooked it all up using the blended grain technique (but usually, I don’t even bother blending, as I like the chew).

Brownie Batter in a bowl, I tell ya; Brownie Batter in a bowl :)

I am dying to know what the mystery grain is!

I totally agree that oatmeal can be a dessert. I had it every night for years.

I don't blame you on the PB&J's actualy, though I must admit I have never had PB & banana, which probably makes me un-American!

Quinoa flakes? No idea really, can't wait to hear! I am a follower of Heather Eats Almond Butter, I love her blog too!

Looks like I need to hop on the barney butter bandwagon!

It’s okay, it took me 17 years to like pb+j, come to think of it, it took me that long to even like pb!

Reply

Marianne February 2, 2009 at 5:22 pm

No love for the pb & j?! Awww, come on. Really good raspberry jam + peanut butter is awesome. But in my world, it absolutely has to be raspberry jam, none of this jelly crap.

Not too sure what your mystery grain is, but I am intrigued. Especially your mystery grain as a bowl of chocolately goodness!

Kate February 2, 2009 at 5:26 pm

YAY! I can’t wait to go look for them! I think I’ve seen them b/f but I just thought it was one chocolate flavor. If there’s a choc HAZELNUT? O boy, gotta find it! And thanks for the tip w/ the Ezekiel!

Hey CCV,
have you tried making your own nut butters? I especially love walnut butter. It’s fabulous on freshly baked banana bread with s drizzle of maple syrup or some fresh homemade jam! And all it is, is ground walnuts (grind until buttery texture is reached) with a pinch of salt and a bit of raw sugar (1tsp per 250g of nuts) – wow!

Jessie February 2, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Hmmm, is the mystery grain barley? Whatever it is, it looks good!

Simple and Divine February 2, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Puffed Wheat heated in the Micro? Some other type of cereal? Whenever I've tried heating Puffed Wheat with my fiber cereal it DISSAPEARS, CCV! Any pointers?

Umm… Could it be Quinoa Flakes? What about Hominy? 00HHH IS IT H0MINY?? Do I hear a Ding Ding? Can I get an Amen? (Can she be D0NE already?) ;)

Love you Twinny Baby! <333

I really have to try Barney Butter, I read nothing but great reviews of it. I love almond butter so I imagine it’s really good. Still, nothing beats peanut butter for me!

I agree that oatmeal is an awesome dessert. I eat oatmeal at night quite often when I need a snack and am craving something creamy.

shelby February 2, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Ew, I don’t like jelly either. I prefer apple butter or some kind of natural spread.

I’ve never tried BB but the texture sounds great. I’ve always found AB to be a little crunchy so I think I might try this next.

That bowl looks HEAVENLY! I can’t wait to see the mystery grain. You should totally post the recipe too.

Reply

Kiki February 2, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Oooh, I’m so jealous of your BB! I haven’t been able to find it yet. Your combos sound good though!

And lets see, what could the mystery grain be? Barley? Buckwheat (kasha)?

Your un-oatmeal is so intriguing! And sounds totally delish…

Sweet Katie, thank you for the shout-out and your kind words. I feel honored. :)

Now about this brownie batter hot cereal. 3 words – You are brilliant! I can’t wait to read all about the “mystery grain”.

Happy Monday CCV!

HangryPants February 2, 2009 at 8:07 pm

I totally agree about BB being like Skippy (but way better for you!)

I love Heather! I also agree that oatmeal can be a dessert. Of course.

I LOVE nut butters! I didn't like PB&J sammiches either until this summer I bought crates full of organic raspberries and made my own jam. Jam is different than jelly though. Anyway, I love homemade jam and I love it with nut butters. Sorry for this incredibly self centered comment, I am just really proud because it was the first time I made jam.

Enough about me. CCV, have I ever told you how much you rock?? I adore reading your blog. I look forward to your posts. I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Erin February 2, 2009 at 8:23 pm

I never liked PB and J either! Pb and banana is the way to go.
Your blog is so adorable and I want brownie batter for breakfast!

omg, i love all nut butters too :) and would prefer a pb & banana to jelly any day of the week! i can't remember the last time i had a pb sandwich though… need to remedy that!

What is that? :) Cream of wheat? Grits? Hmmmm…can’t wait to hear.

I’m glad you loved the BB! I thought it was mediocre.

Chelsea February 2, 2009 at 9:52 pm

I’ve never been a fan of pb and jelly, either. When I was a kid I loved pb and pickle (and did I ever get made fun of at the lunch table when other kids noticed), but nowadays I’m all about nut butter and agave nectar.

Reply

maybepigscanfly February 2, 2009 at 10:34 pm

Yum that looks sooo good! I'm guessing that the mystery grain is quinoa flakes.

Ya know, even though I grew up on pb&j and love it (although I haven't had a pb'j sandie for at least 2 years) pb and banana is waaaay better! So no need to feel ashamed of not liking jelly!

how innnnnnnnnteresting all your food is.

o’mystery grain, reveal yourself quickly and swiftly!

I agree – the pb&j sandwich is overrated. My personal favorite is apple butter + peanut butter. Mmm. :)

The "brownie batter" looks delicious! I'm going to try something like that. Yummy.

Is your mystery ingretient a grain or some type of spice like cinnamon… maybe chocolate hemp powder? Hmmm… I haven't gotten my hands on the BB but I'm currently addicted to PB&Co.'s nutbutter… besides the classic "elvis" PB+Banana sammie, My fav. cway to devor and savor lucious, creammy, dense, salty or sweet nutbutter is with a spoon!!! =D

I know this is completely unrelated to your post, but I just wanted to let you know that I used your agar pudding recipe to make a rocky road pudding using coca powder, chocolate chips, walnuts, and ricemellow, and it was absolutely delicious! So thanks for the recipe!

I haven’t tried Barney Butter yet – not gonna lie, I feel kinda left out! I really don’t like peanut butter and jelly sammies, but I live for peanut butter and banana sammies! sososososo good! you should try a barney butter +nanner sammie.

Don't worry, I don't like pb&j either. I put dried fruit or pomegranate seeds on my pb sandwiches instead!

I eat oatmeal as a dessert ALL THE TIME! My fave: PB-Choco-nana-chip oatmeal. Creamy oats w/mashed banana, cocoa powder, chocolate chips… oh and PB2.
