Help for Haiti

by Chocolate-Covered Katie on January 14, 2010

I’m really (read: reeeeaaally!) short on time, but I wanted to quickly pass along two ideas (for which I cannot take credit; the credit goes to my friend Valerie) for ways to help raise money for those in Haiti:

Way # 1 is to donate to the Red Cross via their website or text the number 90999, which charges $10 and goes toward the Red Cross as well.

Way #2:

1. Talk to your supervisor/office manager to clear this idea by them first.

2. Select a day (or a few days) during the workweek.

3. On the selected day(s), have an office “Dress Down Day”.

4. Have staff members bring a donation in order to participate – if you like, you could select a minimum amount (maybe $1 or $2), and tell your coworkers that they are welcome to contribute more if they want to.  Collect the funds and make a donation to the Red Cross – while time is of the essence right now, it will never be too late to have this fundraiser so even if you can’t do this next week, any amount you raise will still be greatly appreciated!

We are doing this at at least one of the schools where I work at, for both the staff and the students.  Almost everyone can afford $1, and this is a great way to get a large number of people involved yet it requires very little work on your part!  This is also a great way to get people to participate who have already contributed to the cause, yet would not mind giving another dollar or two.

(Thanks, Valerie, for letting me copy and paste this info!)

Sorry this post isn’t aesthetically-pleasing; I don’t have time for fun, fancy photos to enhance it.  But ya know what?  The subject matter isn’t exactly something to snazz up with happy pictures.  Just what they didn’t need in a place that’s already suffered so much…  Sometimes life really isn’t fair.

I’ll have a happier post tomorrow.  In the meantime, please keep praying for/thinking about those in Haiti.

Thanks for these ideas, Katie! The cell phone donation thing is great, but it may take little longer for the money to get to Haiti that way. (NPR told me yesterday that the cell phone companies may wait for you to pay your bill before they release the donation) So if you want your money to get to people in need fast, direct donations to the Red Cross and other organization will do the trick. Sites like http://www.charitynavigator.org let you see what percentage of your donation makes it to people in need as well, depending on who you donate to.

We suggested this at my school, where we have a strict uniform, but of course, they say no because the last few fridays have been ‘messed up’ due to snow days. Pathetic. However, we’re still doing a fundraiser for Haiti, it’ll probably be a cake sale or something.
