Spring Break!

Some college kids party it up in Miami for Spring Break. Others take a Caribbean Cruise. (Hello Chocolate-Covered little sister!)

But I am the luckiest girl of all, because I get to spend Spring Break this year with the cutest kids ever: my cousins!

Hmmm, something’s wrong.  They look too tame in the picture.

This is more like it. 🙂

Great post! The animal photo and scrapbook page are adorable! Keri’s Mounds Bars Pancakes look delicious. Your cousins and l’il sister are too cute.

No spring break for me… I’m in the work world now… but I get 10 days off in September to visit Scandinavia with my husband.

I grew up playing with my cousins – we used to go sledding, play road hockey, watch hockey on TV or at the local arena, have movie nights, jump off the bunk beds, play Nintendo, go to the lake lot on the weekends, etc. I think my aunts and uncles (and later, my older cousins) were my primary babysitters. Good times. Now I have a little kid cousin who was born two days before I got married (4.5 years ago). I love playing with her too – taking her swimming, going to ballet together, and other little kid things. Cousins are great.

    JCD,
Ugh, see it’s people like you that I was jealous of, growing up! Whenever we had family reunions, my second cousins would all play together like that. But my first cousins were too old to play with us 🙁
They’d always be watching a movie or something and say, “Oh, we have to turn this off. There are little kids around.” LOL made me feel so babyish!

  3. Bekka says

Oh man please come over and give me srapbooking lessons! I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. But it looks like you have enough for three of us!

  4. Jessica says

I can’t get past how gorgeous your skin is! I have bad acne and I went vegan to try to tame it… it didn’t work for me, but I got healthier in other ways so I kept it up anyways. Regardless, you have the most beautiful, glowing skin!

  5. Emily says

You have to wonder where that little 3rd grader learned the concept of ‘virgin’ at such a young age..yikes!!!

Your cousins are so cute! Glad you get to spend time with them. 🙂

I’m spending spring break at home in Michigan. I have to write a couple of papers and do a pile of school work, but it’s ok because at least I can sleep in and run around my old neighborhood!

  6. ilanalala says

Omigosh Katie I love this post. People ask the strangest questions – you’re so funny. i lve when one little kid teaches the rest of the little kids a bad word and that’s that (I work with kids and I’ve watched this happen over and over…no stopping it)!

All my cousins are also either way older or way younger. I have one or two cousins my age but they live in Israel so I rarely get to see them. Growing up, it kind of sucked because everyone else had a friend their age and I was just randomly in the middle, but now I’m becoming really good friends with both my older cousins and my younger cousins — we all keep in touch via text message!

My spring break will be spent home – not that spring break spent in New York City is ever lame. I just kind of used all of my “trip money” in Thailand over the summer and I’m still trying to replenish my savings. Whoops. It was worth it though.

And no, there is NOTHING better than chocolate for breakfast!!

  7. vegangal says

    you are absolutely stunning!!!
and your little cousins look devilish. are they little troublemakers? all the twin boys i know are little devils!

  8. The Foodie Diaries says

Oh how I wish I were still en escuela so I got a spring break haha.. As for cousins, I have muchos. My closest ones are within a couple years of my age, but, of course, I’ve got endless amor for my little ones, too!

  9. Jennifer says

I’m off to Texas to meet my new baby niece (and to see her two older sisters and my own sister), and I’m super-excited! Also, LOTS of homework. Ah, my last spring break…

  10. Katie says

Wow, your female cousin looks so much like you! I have about 75 cousins…so yeah, older, younger, same age, you name it. The ones who were my same age were some of my closest friends growing up.

Spring Break is next week for me, but I will be studying. Lame, yes, but it must be done.

  11. Bianca- Vegan Crunk says

Ooh that Mounds Bar pancake is makin’ me drool! I have a couple of cousins my age and some that are way younger. My best cousin (i.e. my fave) is only two years older than me, and she lives in a small town right outside Memphis (we both moved out of our hometown in Arkansas). So we get together once a month for dinner and cocktails, and our cousin date night just so happens to be tonight! We’re meeting this evening for Mexican food and margaritas.

  12. Darci says

I’m headed to sunny FL for spring break!! Major perk of working at a college…still getting spring break after you graduate from college! 🙂

And yes I have some same age cousins, older, & younger!! Gotta love fam!! 🙂

  13. Just Audrey says

It’s scary how some people’s minds work…that’s all I can say. I mean, seriously, asking your bra size? Creepy.

I have a boatload of cousins–maybe a couple boats at that! Like 40 plus…just on my mom’s side. I am really close to some, others not so much. It’s pretty awesome, though. I love my big family. 😀

  14. Chocolate Covered Katie says

    Emmy,
I guess it would depend on the recipe as to what—if any—oil I’d use and when. If you’re using sesame oil, for example, that can’t handle heat well, so you should put it in at the very end. But you can stir fry with other oils, such as coconut or canola or olive oil. Hope that answered your question!

  15. Valerie says

Are you sure your cousin isn’t your sister? With your beautiful smiles, skin, and glowing faces you could be twins! 🙂
    Great genes!

  16. kaitm says

haha, a crazy spring break?? Nope, not for me! I’ve been on break all week and I’ve just been hanging out at home with my family and my new little puppy! Its actually very relaxing, I’m having a great time!
Those pancakes look to die for!

  17. Janna (Just Flourishing) says

    Aw, adorable cousins!

On my mom’s side I am the oldest of 10 grandchildren. And the oldest girl is 10 years younger than me! I feel a little bit left out as all the boys are around the same age and all the girls are around the same age, except me.
But it’s fun to have little girl cousins running around, the youngest is 5 and she’s adorable 🙂

  18. Christina says

I have a cousin the same age as me. We were basically like sisters growing up!

I love your scrap book! I really want to start my own. I was in Michael’s the other day and they have such cute things for scrap-booking!

  19. Caroline says

I’m definitely not the spring break partying type. I’m at home starting my blog, doing PT for runner’s knee, and waiting to hear back from colleges. Were you stressed out during the college process? It’s kind of hard to imagine you as stressed.

And gosh, I’m surprised you haven’t asked us our bra sizes. It’s a totally socially acceptable question, Katie.

(hopefully my sarcasm is detectable on the internet…)

  20. Vegantvpresenter says

I have 27 cousins, 5 of us were born within 5 months of each other so that was nice at school, we are all a very similar age so school holidays were always fun too! 🙂

  21. *Andrea* says

haha i’m sure the creepers will come out for the formspring questions. bra size?? what’s next.. i’m scared LOL.

your cousins are ADORABLE! your family has killer geners 🙂

on my dad’s side i don’t have any 🙁 but i have 7 on my mom’s but they’re all older and live far away. you’re so lucky!!

i went on a 7-day cruise last week for spring break! SO FUN! totally out of my comfort zone (lots of indulging on pina coladas, beer, icecream, pizza and dancing every night) but totally worth it. you only live once i guess 🙂

  22. Jessica (PB & Jess) says

I don’t have an official spring break (since I’m not a student), but I’m taking tomorrow off from work and going to Chicago with Lucas! Can’t wait!

My cousins are all way younger and I feel more like their “cool aunt”. My fav cousin is 10 years my junior, but she’s a lot of fun and I <3 her so much! 🙂

I love reading your formspring answers, but don't worry — I'm not the one asking super personal questions! I tried to make my own account so you can who I am but I think the site hates me, lol. I'm glad you like my Chocolate-Covered Fun Run idea…I would sign up in a heart beat!

  23. Chocolate Covered Katie says

    Andrea:
Sheesh, you really ARE like my sister! (She’s on a cruise right now)
Andrea, your sweet comments always make me smile 🙂

    Jessica:
LOL that fun run question was you??? I thought that was the best idea ever! In fact, I haven’t stopped thinking about it! Now I want to expand the idea to having them feed the runners chocolate cake at the end. You know, instead of the usual bagel and banana spread? 🙂
P.S. The site hates me too. Often, it makes me sign in multiple times, tells me the server is down, doesn’t let me on at all, doesn’t let me answer questions… so it’s not just you!

  24. Katie says

Oh my gosh that poor substitute!!! Ahahah, that story is hilarious. As a fromer sub, I would have been mortified (although, I wouldn’t have put myself in that situation…how did an 8 year old know what a virgin was anyway??!)

Your cousins are adorable. I have cousins all my age – they were my best friends growing up. 🙂

  25. Danielle says

Ok, so I’m going to sound like a TOTAL creeper…but I read all your formspring questions and was shocked at some of the ones you got lol. I just thought it was interesting because I can relate to the whole vegan/runner/college thing.

One person asked if you had osteoporosis? haha WHAT

  26. Laura says

I have two first cousins and one older brother and we’re stair-step ages. My brother is one year older than my girl cousin, she’s one year older than I am, and I’m one year older than my boy cousin. 🙂 The whole family has always had dinner together every Sunday night, and until I was about eleven or twelve, my Grandad would take the four of us kids out on an outing every Sunday – to the pool, or the movies, or the park, or the beach, or one of his workplaces (he was the general manager of a cheese factory and owned a confectionery and soft drink factory — how lucky were we, hee?). He even kept a huge plastic bag of coins in the car (nicknamed the “slush fund”) that we were allowed to take huge handfuls from to buy lollies, chocolate and cherries to eat while we were out. Just to compound the healthy-ness of the day, we usually stopped for lunch at KFC and ate it at the beach or the wharf. It was awesome, actually, having such great grandparents and cousins close to my age, although it’s funny, I used to feel like the odd one out regardless, so you’re not alone in feeling excluded at times! 🙂 My girl cousin was very much a tomboy and I’ve always been the most adamant girly girl, so she got along much better with the boys than I did. I still see them most weekends and things have evened out a bit now that we’re adults!

  27. Jenny says

That makes me think of this girl in elementary who always knew more than the rest of us about that kind of stuff. She told us about flipping someone off, but I didn’t believe her that it was dirty. At the dinner table that night, I held up my middle finger and said, “Kim said this was dirty.” My mom was wide-eyed and said we would talk about it later. And we’re going to LA for spring break – sooo excited about the restaurants!

  28. virginia says

hey! i see you always use artisana coconut butter and i have been *dying* to try some but where can i buy some? only online?

  29. ecogrrl says

spring break? what’s that? oh that week that all the moms take off from work. gotcha. 🙂

i am the oldest grandchild on my dad’s side and never had strong relationships with any of them, and wouldn’t know cousins on my mom’s side if i saw them on the street. neither parent (mine divorced when i was 4) encouraged strong relationships with siblings and cousins (yet act shocked when i’m not tight with my own siblings…what-ever).

ironically? when i was 23 i met a new cousin – my aunt had given her up for adoption when she was in high school and i was a toddler and i never even knew she existed. she found us and i met her in 1997 and it was soooo cool. the first person in my family that i actually look like. and unlike everyone else, we are very close. happily ever after 🙂

  30. jqlee says

You’re gorgeous girl. You have such nice skin, so flawless and smooth looking. For spring break I’m not going anywhere per se. I’m just excited to see my family and boyfriend at home!

  31. Simply T says

Ok, your story about 3rd grade totally made me giggle. Reminds me of when I was in 6th grade and the latest trend in middle school insults was to call someone “a masturbator.”

Maybe I was just an especially naive 6th grader, but I had no idea what that meant. I also have a very grammatically geared brain, so I thought a “masturbator” was someone who was very good at putting worms on a fishing hook. You know… a master baiter. I wasn’t sure what was so wrong with that, but I was too embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know what the term meant, so I laughed along with everyone else. Then I went home and said, “Mom, what’s a masturbator?”

And as for the bra size? I once got too drunk for my own good and told a cab driver to take exit 36B to get to my apartment. “I REMEMBER IT BECAUSE IT’S MY BRA SIZE!!!!”

Ugh, I am such an embarrassment.

Your cousins are super cute, they probably think you are the coolest person ever. My cousins are kind of a wide age range – but they all live far away, so I don’t have a close relationship with them. However, when I was very young, my cousins tricked me into saying a swear word (can’t remember which one) in Spanish to my mom. I was gullible and naive apparently. Oh well! This weekend I’m making a Whole Foods run and I am planning on raiding your blog for some recipes… I think the hardest part will be trying to choose just a few!

  32. McKella says

Finally, spring break. 44 days to graduation. I can make it. This spring break, I’m going to try to finish writing my novel. Writing a book and going to school is hard!

  33. Naomi (onefitfoodie) says

well since I am not in college anymore and working, spring break means nothing to me haha, although my senior year my roomates and I went to south beach Miami which was SO much fun!! thsi year, I will be working 🙁 BUT summer is around the corner yay!

    love your beautiful pictures, katie!

  34. Trail (Oven Aversion) says

Sadly, I don’t get a spring break in my grown up world. 🙁

I have cousins and we’re all pretty equally spaced a few years apart from each other. Now that we’re adults, we don’t notice the age difference anymore, except with the couple who are still teenagers. I really love that a couple of the guy cousins married girls I LOVE so I gained another couple awesome cousins! There are a few perks to being adults 🙂

  35. Heather Eats Almond Butter says

I can’t believe someone asked your bra size. Really people?!?

Oh, how I miss those Spring Break trips. We always went to the beach and always had so much fun. I think all adults should get a spring break as well. I should start a petition.

    Keri…amazing, that’s all I have to say. 🙂

  36. Pure2raw twins says

We do not live near our cousins, only get to see them every once in awhile at family reunions.

Hope you have a great spring break! Hope you get to enjoy some raw carrot cake ; )

  37. Marianne says

The age range of me, my sister, and my cousins spans only 10 years, so it’s not that bad. I have 2 who are older (6 and 2 years older), 2 who are the same age as me, 1 two years younger, my sister is 3 younger, and 1 who is 4 younger. I didn’t really hang out with my cousins on my mom’s side growing up much, but we often saw our cousins on my dad’s side. Now it’s the other way around – I see the ones on my mom’s side all the time!

  38. Anne says

No spring breaks for working people 🙁 bohoo.

I have 4 cousins and the oldest is 7 years YOUNGER than I am and half of them live in another country 😀

  39. rebekah (clarityincreation) says

    hey girl! i have a question –

i started running again after a long break due to medical reasons. now that i’m running again, i know i need more calories, but i have NO appetite, and keep steadily losing weight.

do you encounter this? how do you eat when you aren’t hungry?

  40. Allison says

I totally missed the contest but I made some pancake roll ups and blogged about them a couple of days ago. Check it out if you’ve got a minute! I definitely have to try those mounds roll ups.
