Sadly, it’s impossible to experience everything New York City has to offer during one short trip. But maybe that’s not so sad after all, as it leaves something for the next trip. One place I always make sure to visit on every NYC trip is Greenwich Village. I feel at home among the artsy NYU students, the happy-go-lucky dogs (I love that dog park!), and all the vegetarian-friendly establishments…
Such as the Lifethyme Natural Market. An establishment can’t get much more vegetarian-friendly than this market. With well-stocked shelves of organic fruits, veggies, vitamins, and packaged items up front, and an enticing array of hot foods, raw foods, smoothies, and desserts in the back, Lifethyme Natural Market is a Vegan Paradise. It even boasts an upstairs room filled with natural beauty products, personal-care items, and books.
One could spend all day in the Lifethyme Market. That is, if the most thrilling city in the world weren’t waiting right outside! Even though we were only in the city for two day trips, I was lucky enough to make two stops at Lifethyme. The first stop was to pick up a lunch from the salad/hot bar.
I packed up my lunch, then oh-so-graciously suggested to Handsome Dinner Lunch Date that we mosey on down to a British pub, where he bought his lunch and we took in a soccer match. Although my salad creation hit the spot, the real star of the lunch was Navy Bean Soup. (I added extra veggies from the hot bar.) Even the muggy summer weather couldn’t detract from this bowl’s deliciousness.
The next day, we made another quick stop at Lifethyme New York City Market, before heading off to La Guardia Airport (location of Seitan Wars 2009).
Feeling adventurous, I bought a slice of raw spinach-quinoa quiche, which I ate as a pre-flight dinner.

Oooh we should get together when you’re in the City! I haven’t gotten to explore too much yet, but I love the little vegetarian cafe near my apartment, called Green Bean Cafe. It’s adorable and they make all kinds of smoothies, juices, sweet treats and sandwiches 🙂

Ooooh I LOVE Lifethyme!!! They have EVERYthing there, and I find something new each time I visit. I went to undergrad at NYU so I’m also a huge fan of the neighborhood…glad you had a fun trip!

NYC sounds so much fun!! 🙂
Quinoa quiche?? I normally hate quiche but this one looks different so I’m willing to give it a try!
Something that I always wanted to try…I’ll say those big, salty soft pretzels they sell at Time Square. It looks so yummy!

I’ve never been to New York before, so I want to go everywhere ;), especially Hangawi and Greenwich though from your awesome reviews. Yummy that spinach quinoa quiche looks sooo goood!!!
Diana (Soap & Chocolate) says
Well first of all, my recommendation is that you get in touch with those of us in NYC prior to your trip so we can hang. 🙂
Looks like you’ve found some seriously quality spots for good veggie eats, so you’ll be fine no matter what, but I could easily recommend Angelica Kitchen as one of my personal faves. Also nearby that restaurant are Viva Herbal Pizzeria and Atlas (which stocks Vegan Treats cakes!!!). Curly’s Vegetarian Lunch is great fun as well. Depends where in the city you want to be! I could go on forever, but start Googling now and you’ll be able to set your priorities. 🙂
Yay for visiting NYC!

You should check out the movies they have for free at parks! Oh man there’s always something going on over there. I plan on going there some time before the summer ends as well. My friend keeps going back and forth like every week and telling me about all these fun things! Last week she went up to surprise our friend for his opening at a gallery in Chelsea.

I’ve never been to NYC, but I’d love to go sometime. I think I’d feel very at home among the artsy NYU students, too. 🙂
As a huge musical theatre fan, I’d love to see a Broadway show in NYC!

I love Lifethyme! I recommend Westerley Natural Market- it looks like a dive and but has an amazing selection of raw foods in a little corner in the back (you need to hunt around the store to find it- worth it!) also conveniently located to the huge Whole Foods at Columbus Circle 😀 And, i recommend Ellen’s Stardust Diner, just for coffee/drinks…go, and you’ll see why. 50th and Broadway!

I wish I could go to NYC with you! Next time… 😉
That quiche looks amazing!

You spoiled NYC brat!!
Just kidding – I hope you never thought that I would think of you as a brat! You are the sweetest, most wonderful girlie and I love hearing about your adventures. I do wish I could come along with you on your trip, though… Could you convince your trip companions that we are fraternal twins and should therefore get a 2-for-1 deal on airfare?!
Oh, what a heavenly quiche! And you are smart for not loading up for the plane ride…it sure don’t feel nice to sit down for such a long time with a brick of food in le tummy. (I actually did overload with a pint of hemp ice cream in a super-long car ride recently… It was kinda worth it, but it did turn into a big hemp brick and let’s just say I had lots of dancing and singing energy in the car, much to my family’s misfortune.)
I shall add Lifethyme to my NYC essentials list… It sounds like heaven! There are times when being an artsy NYU student is so appealing to me too. But then I remember the price tag and the weather and then suppose it wouldn’t be perfect after all.
Thanks for a lovely post, as usual!

Hi! First-time commenter and fellow vegan. I love your blog 🙂 You should go to the Metro Café the next time you’re in New York. They make these really awesome humongous salads.

That quiche sounds absolutely brilliant! I want to try making one now.
Risotteria on Bleecker between 6th and 7th is my one of my fav NYC restaurants. It is vegan friendly, gluten free friendly, and fabulous! Hit it up if you get the chance, but be prepared to wait. There is always a line wrapped around the building.

I love Quintessence in the East village (raw-q.com) and the newer adelina’s in union square is good as well. I already wrote to you that I ADORE Souen and eat there many times a month! Angelica’s Kitchen, also great!
