Operation Chocolate-Covered Kindness

Operation Chocolate-Covered Kindness

I always want to help others but often get bogged down in the thought that “I’m just one small person; how much help can I really be?”

And there are so many worthy causes out there that it’s easy to become discouraged and give up. People often get so overwhelmed at the vastness of the suffering that they’ll choose to do nothing because they can’t help with everything. (I’ve been guilty of this too.)  Please don’t fall into this trap!  Sure, you’re just one person, and you can’t do everything; but anything is better than nothing.

Currently, I’m involved with two charity projects: Africards and Project Pillows.  But I’ve been so blessed in life that I feel like I really ought to do even more.  A few weeks ago, I began brainstorming money-raising ideas.  I love how some bloggers have held Blogger Bake Sales and debated holding one too.  But then I thought about how much money would be lost due to shipping costs.  There had to be something else… Another idea was to put together an e-cookbook.  I still might do this; however the idea has its own drawbacks (the #1 drawback being I’d have no idea how to even start!  Would I ask for submissions from readers?  And what about copyright laws?  Would anyone even buy my book?)

Then it hit me:

What about holding a Page View Charity Drive? What I’m hoping to do with this charity drive is to get as many page views as possible.  More page views = more money raised.  Then, at the end of the month, I’ll send all of the money over to one of my favorite charities, The Enough Project.

We bloggers talk incessantly about “perfect” meals and “delicious” foodie products.  We spend hours browsing the expensive offerings at Whole Foods, making our meals as aesthetically-pleasing as possible, and photographing said meals with fancy digital cameras.  But the people being helped by the Enough Project are happy to get ANY meal.  And while people like me run for fun, others in the world are running because they have to in order to survive.

It really puts things in perspective and makes me want to help as much as I possibly can.  I’m not going to set a goal amount, since I really have no idea what t expect.  But no matter how much we end up raising, every little bit helps, and every little person can make a BIG difference!

I’m all over it- especially with the pet charity which is so near and dear to my heart. I used to click every day on a pet charity site and each click gave a certain amount of money. I switched laptops and forgot the site, but this is similar (and reminds me to look up that old site). Thanks for doing it!

  6. Teresa says

I don’t have a blog (anymore), but I do want to help if possible. I’m not sure I follow exactly how this all works, but if I were to link to your blog from my twitter account would that help too? Or does that not count since it isn’t a blog.

    Thanks Katie, you’re the best!

  7. Damjana says

i’ll definitely link to your blog from mine-even though mine isn’t so known. As i’m not from the states, my visits won’t count:(. Anyway i’ll still continue reading it!

    you are very sweet
glad my clicks will mean even more now

i have a quote linked on my website because doing rescue work sometimes feels like i’m not making any difference

“I am only one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”

    Edward Everett

every little thing we do makes a big difference for those we do it for…even though thousands of dogs are euthanized every year–i save a handful–and to that handful and the families that adopted them-it sure means something
a little at a time we can all change the world

I think you’re awesome Katie! What an amazing idea!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and gotta talk about the heart shaped goodies…umm they were just so good. It wasnt just the PB layer in the middle. The whole “dough” just seemed different and just amazing. I need to recreate. Is it a 2 to 1 ratio of dates to nuts? Dash of cocoa powder, done? Need the stats my love, wanna make them soon!!
    xoxo

That is so incredibly thoughtful of you. I knew you were kind-hearted and sweet and of course expected nothing less of you: this is an amazing initiative and I will certainly link to it on my blog (not that it gets much traffic, but I suppose every little helps!)

I’m also looking into trying a chocolate-covered recipe project for extra publicity but I’ll have to see how many modifications I can make for my many food allergies *glares at stomach*. Either way, I’ll definitely give you a shout out…even if no-one’s listening 😉

    Once again, fabulous idea!

Such a great idea! I started a blog awhile ago but never really “let myself” get it going. I found you through PB Jenny (luuuuuuuuuuve her) and well-this is more of a reason to jump into the blogging world. PS I LOVE your recipes. Be well!

Good for you for doing what you can, with what you have, in order to better lives. I work at a community service center at a university in Rhode Island and it’s things like this that remind me of all the goodness that people possess. Hope starts at home! 🙂

hey katie, i was wondering if i could help by just sending the link to this page by email to a few friends. my blog isn’t really up and running and i don’t really have any followers…let me know…

    =)

  32. Patricia says

Wow I love your idea and Chocolate. I have been to many of your pages this morning and came over from Gina’s referral from Choosing Raw…

I am hoping to have my e-book of Food Love recipes up on my blog next week…I did ask for submissions from readers for recipes and foods that they just Love to eat and make…they are not all raw or vegetarian, but they are filled with love and are fairly global.

I wanted to get some donations to UNICEF because I have no income right now and I had no trick or treaters with donation boxes come to my door this year.

Kind of small peanuts in my effort…but it is a start…and has become one of the most “fun” projects I have every worked on.

I wish you well. Good causes. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and helping others.

  33. Lisa says

This is such a fantastic idea! I love it. Hopefully one day I will have enough readers of my blog to do something similar. Such an easy way to help others. I will definitely send people your way! Best of luck! Can’t wait to hear how it turns out!

  34. Terecita says

This is a great idea!! Why not promote your blog like this?!?!? It doesn’t cost anyone any money to view your blog and you can raise money for a worthy cause just by peole stopping by. Great Idea!!! Will certainly pass on the word!

  35. Cassie says

This was so refreshing. I know I’m late but I’m glad to know there are bloggers out there who aren’t caught up in the “expensive organic Whole Foods superfood” lifestyle!
